Steve is the Founder and Chief Compassion Officer of Organic Intelligence. For over two decades, Steve has dedicated his life to understanding and healing trauma, and his paradigm-shifting approach has impacted countless lives across the globe. Steve's Organic Intelligence method brings together mindfulness practices with biological and systems theory to create a revolutionary new model of treatment. This interview provides an introduction to some of the core ideas and philosophies underlying the approach, and how they can be applied in healing addiction. You'll learn: — Why, at their core, many therapies use a system of negative reinforcement and how the organic intelligence approach flips this on its head. — The counterintuitive concept of “orientation” and how it can be applied to accelerate the innate healing potential of our mind and body — Why organic intelligence offers a powerful treatment for those struggling with addiction and the importance of not doing too much, too soon, in the recovery process. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic experiences that children experience before the age of 18 that can have lasting impacts on their mental health, physical health, and general well-being. As a psychological therapist and grief and trauma expert, I am faced with people's life experiences on a daily basis and can see the impact and effect Adverse Childhood Experiences have on a person's life, both past and present. About this week's guest Marc Hauser's scientific research, including over 300 published papers and seven books, has focused on how the brain evolves, develops, and is altered by damage and neurodevelopmental disorders, with an emphasis on the processes of learning and decision-making, as well as the impact of traumatic experiences on development. His educational and consulting work has focused on the implementation of quantitative, brain-based methods for teachers, clinicians, and doctors working with children who have different disabilities, including especially those that result from a history of traumatic experiences. Marc has earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bucknell University, a PhD from UCLA and Post-doctoral fellowships from the University of Michigan, Rockefeller University, and University of California-Davis. For almost 20 years he was a Professor at Harvard University. In 2013, he founded the company Risk-Eraser, dedicated to providing software and consulting to programs focusing on students in special education. What is the role of trauma in autoimmunity that leads us to a clear path forward for prevention or recovery? This is the question that I answer in today's Biology of Trauma Podcast. In this episode we are talking about autoimmunity and trauma. Trauma in all its forms - emotional, toxins, foods toxins, etc. - and the role it might play in switching on or off these so-called incurable conditions, such as MS or Hashimoto's. My guest Palmer Kippola and I will talk about the three big root causes that influence autoimmunity, three main food groups to look at in relation to autoimmunity, and six environmental factors that we can control in relation to autoimmunity. How do you use mirroring when wanting to hold the container for someone to safely go into their freeze response for healing? This is the question that I answer in today's Biology of Trauma Podcast. This episode is an excerpt from one of my professional development training sessions for those who become mentors and lead the breakout groups in the Foundational Journey. During this session, I chat with those group members about what mirroring is, how to use it to excite, subside, or maintain whatever the emotional state is, and how mirroring someone's own words back to them creates a connection. I will also explain what to do when someone goes into a freeze state and how to be a safe place for that person. How can you heal a damaged mind?'The Body Keeps The Score' by Bessel Van Der Kolk is a book focused on mental health plus the what/why's of PTSD and trauma. It's split into 5 parts dealing with history, brain science, child abuse, memory and healing strategies. It has a mix of case studies, hard/soft science and personal opinion.I summarised the book as follows. "It's a dense read that was more scientific than not. The tone was empathetic and despite being about heavy topics it focused on the positive of how trauma could be overcome. I didn't learn much new information but it did make me grateful for my upbringing and understanding of why other people behave how they do."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Throughout the Biology of Trauma Podcast, we discuss everything that goes into the biology of trauma, including emotional, psychological, and physiological components. Today, we will be focusing on the physiology of the nervous system with our guest, Dr. Stephen Porges who is a distinguished university scientist at Indiana University, where he is the founding director or the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium, and professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. We are going to bridge the worlds between medicine, functional medicine, neuroscience, and trauma therapy. The big question we will answer is What does the polyvagal lens say about attachment, freeze, and functional diseases? You will learn: Looking at attachment through the polyvagal lens The freeze response Dissociation through the polyvagal lens Social engagement through the polyvagal lens and how social engagement is actually a neuromodulator Functional diseases viewed through the polyvagal lens Our first step and where we start the work Key Takeaways: [01:35] Introduction to Dr. Stephen Porges [06:43] Understanding that the body's reaction is survival driven rather than blaming or shaming our response [08:58] The first step learned through somatic experiences is to witness your body [11:38] Understanding the freeze response [15:40] Being aware of our own body [18:11] Adaptive shutting down leads to functional diseases [22:21] Getting our bodies to feel safe Find More About Dr.Aimie: 21 Day Journey How do you know if you have trauma? The History. Culture. Trauma Podcast examines trauma and resilience, not just at the individual level but at the systems and cultural level. How has the trauma of slavery and genocide impacted our current society? Why are the cultural manifestations of trauma, i.e., community violence, school shootings, etc., so pervasive? It was not until June 19, 2021, that Juneteenth, which marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed, was recognized by the U.S. government as a federal holiday. Through this episode, Ingrid Cockhren and Brandon Jones will talk through the historical and current context of this day. Brandon Jones is the Minnesota Association for Children's Mental Health Executive Director. He has a consulting and training background in addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Historical and Intergenerational trauma, Social/Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Leadership, and Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). Brandon holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Minnesota, a master's in Community Psychology from Metropolitan State University, and a master's in Psychotherapy (MFT) from Adler Graduate School. Brandon is also a 2013 Bush Foundation Leadership Fellow. Today, he provides the MACMH staff and board with the leadership and vision necessary to keep MACMH at the forefront of Mental Health education and advocacy. He lives by the motto of Live life with Purpose on Purpose.

I had an amazing conversation with Dr. Aimie Apigian, who is a physician turned trauma expert and who explained, at a deeper physiological level, what happens to our bodies when we experience trauma and share with us what I consider is a complete and comprehensive (mind and body) approach to healing trauma. We talked about her journey from medicine to trauma healing, we discussed what trauma is, the differences between a stress response and a trauma response, how experiencing trauma affects our entire metabolism, digestive systems, our lungs, and cardiovascular system, and her approach of the 3 essential pillars to addressing and treating trauma. You can learn more about Dr. Aimie her work, her 21 Day journey program, her certification courses and her upcoming Biology of Trauma Summit being held this coming August 2023 on her website at www.traumahealingaccelerated.com , On all podcast platforms at The Biology of Trauma Podcast, and on Instagram at @draimie.

Have you ever experienced a complete and intense burnout? Today on the Biology of Trauma™ Podcast, one of Dr. Aimie's Biology of Trauma™ Professionals, Marc, joins her to share his story of how a complete and intense burnout changed his life and perspective. Marc was a pastor traveling the world making an impact on those around him. But no one saw what was really going on inside. Marc was experiencing debilitating physical symptoms which were clear signs he was dealing with a persistent trauma response in his body, eventually leading to a cancer diagnosis. He wanted to figure out what had caused all these issues which led him to my 21 Day Journey to Calm Aliveness. He found what he was looking for. Marc has become a mentor for others going through the 21 Day Journey and has taken what he has learned to start making literal changes in the world. You'll hear more about: [02:18] Marc's journey from pastor traveling the world to complete burnout [09:27] Three ways to recognize if your body is stuck in a trauma response. [10:59] How Marc ended up working with Dr. Aimie and taking her 21 Day Journey program [14:10] What is physiologically different between trauma and stress [15:37] The first step in completing the trauma cycle [17:08] How Marc's career was completely transformed by his personal journey (and how yours can be too!) [21:54] The three steps of the Essential Sequence to rewiring and releasing stored trauma in the body [23:13] The biggest takeaways Marc had from learning the Essential Sequence [28:39] How to support someone's biology in an intentional way that can allow them to get unstuck [30:05] How Marc is helping others get unstuck while living his best life in the middle of a war zone Find More About Dr.Aimie: 21 Day Journey How do you know if you have trauma? How can you not listen when someone tells you that "you will fail" or that "you can't" do something? Fear is the enemy of courage. It's the abusive and narcissistic half of the relationship we have with it. Let's put fear out on the table and examine it so we can then ask the question: How can we make this better?Thank YOU for being with me today! YOU are appreciated!

In this episode I had an inspiring and motivating converstation with Rico Sanchez. His story is one of change, hope and possibilites. He was raised in Chicago, in gangland culture from the start of his life. From very early on he suffered many intense exerpirnces, he share his transformation, how he is full of light and love, on a new path in life, one he could of never dreamed of only a couple years ago. I found Rico through a Tony Robbins event online, breakthrough 2022 in which Tony Robbins pulled Rico Sanchez out of the digital audience to share his story of transformation. It was so beautiful and touching that I had to get hold of him for the show. Im so pleased I got to hear more of his story and process, and I can't wait to share it with you. We touched on many subjects from prison, depression, suicide, violence and childhood trauma. I'd love to hear your thoughts and feelings on this episode. Drop it in the comments

A Little Bit Culty – Consent is one of the most misunderstood words of all time, and in the confusion surrounding it, bad actors find loopholes. According to today’s guests, defining consent in penal code is key to prosecuting sex crimes and preventing sexual assaults. Joyce Short has fought to define consent for over a decade. A sexual assault survivor, she has written 3 books on the subject. Her most recent, "Your Consent - The Key to Conquering Sexual Assault," lay the foundation for New York's current bills, #A6540 and #S6200, defining "consent" in penal law. She is a TEDx Talk Presenter and the Founder and Director of the Consent Awareness Network (CAN): A coalition whose mission is to correctly define consent for society and to properly define it in laws and statutes across the US and around the world. She joins the podcast today with CAN Chief of Staff and Consent Outreach Ambassador Nina Lucas to talk about bill A6540, a piece of legislation currently in committee in New York state that seeks to define consent and clarify the definition of lawful sexual conduct. Today’s episode wraps Season One of A Little Bit Culty with the opposite of word salad around the issue of consent, followed by a clear call to action: Spread the word about #FGKIA, and help bill A6540 get out of committee. A Little Bit Culty – Daniel Shaw, LCSW, checks every imaginable box on A Little Bit Culty’s dream guest checklist. He’s a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City and in Nyack, New York. He originally trained as an actor at Northwestern University and with the renowned teacher Uta Hagen in New York City, and later worked as a missionary for an Indian guru. His eventual recognition of cultic aspects of this organization led him to become an outspoken activist in support of individuals and families traumatically abused in cults. Simultaneous with leaving this group, Dan began his training in the mental health profession, becoming a faculty member and supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapist in New York. His book, Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, was published by Routledge in 2014 and was nominated for the distinguished Gradiva Award. In 2018, the International Cultic Studies Association awarded him the Margaret Thaler Singer Award for advancing the understanding of coercive persuasion and undue influence. Shaw’s book Traumatic Narcissism and Recovery: Leaving the Prison of Shame and Fear will be published by Routledge in 2021. Dan joined Sarah and Nippy to share his story, drop some knowledge about the shameless ways of traumatizing narcissists, and provide insights on the recovery process.Learn more about him at: https://danielshawlcsw.comDon’t get it twisted: The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. A Little Bit Culty –What happens when you find a sense of identity, and belonging, and maybe even something approximately like love within a group that is in fact a violent and racist extremist organization? And if by chance you wake up to what's inherently terrible about it, and manage to escape that thinking, how do you then seek redemption? In 2017, Samantha Freedom was the top ranking woman leader in Identity Evropa, the white nationalist organization behind the violent Charlottesville, Virginia ‘Unite the Right’ rally that resulted in the death of 20 year old Heather Heyer. That event was when Samantha’s descent into white supremacy, something she’s described as a ‘fever dream,’ finally began to break. Samantha joins Sarah and Nippy for a frank and sometimes painful conversation about her journey in and out of the alt-right, and why she’s nowhere near done when it comes to making things right.
