Bonus! Johnny To's windswept, smoldering superhero masterpiece may not exactly exist in the Batman continuity… but we sure as hell are going to talk about it anyway.Starring Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, and Maggie Cheung, we thought this bonkers dream of an action noir would be the perfect appetizer for our upcoming Schumacher era. Whether it was intentional or not, Schumacher's films look suspiciously similar to THE HEROIC TRIO. And we're going to get to the bottom of it!Join the conversation on our Discord at https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx and get more Eye of the Duck on our Patreon show, After Hours https://www.patreon.com/EyeoftheDuckPodReferences:Special FeaturesSuperhero SisterhoodNo Ordinary Actor: Anthony WongPlanet Hong Kong: Popular Cinema and the Art of Entertainment by David BordwellHong Kong Cinema: The Extra Dimensions by Stephen TeoHong Kong New WaveSight & Sound March 1995 Vol. 5 Production HistoryMetrograph Production HistoryHouse of Asian Cinema James Pax InterviewHenry Sheehan Johnnie To InterviewMichelle Yeoh Takes Down ConanCredits:Eye of the Duck is created, hosted, and produced by Dom Nero and Adam Volerich. This episode was edited by Michael Gaspari. This episode was researched by Parth Marathe. Our logo was designed by Francesca Volerich. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinemaThis February at Catching Up On Cinema, is “Ladies' Night”!All month long we'll be reviewing action movies headlined by women! This week, Trevor conducts a solo review Johnnie To and Ching Siu-Tung's, The Heroic Trio (1993) and Executioners (1993)!Starring the trio of prestigious Hong Kong starlets, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, and Michelle Yeoh, the pair of films were a box office smash in Asia in the early 90's, and was just recently inducted into the Criterion collection via a fabulous new 4k transfer.Singer/actress Anita Mui sadly passed away in 2003, however her cultural footprint remains vast, and in fact a biopic and documentary were made about her in recent years.Maggie Cheung has been a fixture in Hong Kong cinema since the 80's, earning critical acclaim in her later career collaborations with director Wong Kar-wai.Like her costars Mui and Cheung, Michelle Yeoh has been a fixture of Hong Kong and Chinese cinema for decades now, however in more recent years, beginning in the late 90's, her popularity and prominence in film markets outside of Asia has grown by leaps and bounds, culminating in her recently receiving an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).Follow us on Instagram @catchinguponcinemaFollow us on Twitter @CatchingCinemaLike, share, subscribe, and we'll catch you next time!
For the second of our four live podcasts - co-hosted by the 'Life of Action' author, Mike Fury - we welcome back the British stunt coordinator and former Hong Kong stuntman, Jude Poyer. Jude's first appearance was on Episode 48 back in 2019. Now, in 2025, he is the action director behind Xavier Gens' violent French brawler, 'Farang' (aka 'Mayhem!'), and Gareth Evans' lauded co-collaborator, having worked with 'The Raid' director on his landmark UK crime series, 'Gangs of London', and the eagerly-awaited Netflix production, 'Havoc', starring Tom Hardy. In this wide-ranging conversation, Jude unveils his secret to coordinating a great action sequence, what it feels like to be kicked in the face by Yuen Biao, the difference between working in Hong Kong and the UK, and why he thinks Gareth Evans might be one of the best action filmmakers working in the industry today. This episode was recorded live at the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford, UK, on 12 November 2024, following a screening of the crazy Hong Kong superhero film, 'The Heroic Trio' (1993), directed by Johnnie To, produced by Tony Ching Siu-tung, and starring Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung. Screening as part of the British Film Institute's Art of Action season - in association with the Independent Cinema Office and Film Hub South East - we also discuss the film and its impact, as well as sharing our thoughts on the lasting legacy of the 'golden age' of Hong Kong action cinema.LINKSJude Poyer on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reelpowerstunts/Jude Poyer on X: https://twitter.com/ReelPowerStuntsJude Poyer on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ReelPowerStuntsJude Poyer's website: http://www.reelpowerstunts.com/ Jude Poyer on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0694706/Jude Poyer on Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast, Episode 48: http://kungfumovieguide.com/kfmg-podcast-s04-episode-48-jude-poyer/ Mike Fury on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themikefury/Mike Fury's website: https://www.mikefury.net/'The Heroic Trio' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: http://kungfumovieguide.com/the-heroic-trio/ 'The Heroic Trio' trailer: https://youtu.be/zhrYrExHi2s Buy 'The Heroic Trio' on Blu-ray: https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/7155-the-heroic-trio-executionersVisit the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford: https://uppcinema.com/ Learn more about the BFI's Art of Action season: https://www.bfi.org.uk/art-actionA huge thank you to Independent Cinema Office (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/) and Film Hub South East (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/film-hub-south-east/) Hosted on Acast. Writer, critic, and Hit Factory Discord all-star Jason Miller returns to the show to discuss Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan's 'Center Stage', an experimental biopic exploring the life and work of Chinese silent film star Ruan Lingyu who achieved an unprecedented celebrity before tragically taking her own life at only 24. Ruan is played magnificently by Maggie Cheung in one of her first "serious" (and arguably one of her very best) performances. The film brilliantly forgoes a traditional biopic structure, intercutting the filmic recreations with real footage of Ruan's handful of enduring film performances. From there, the film offers an additional layer of complexity by frequently inserting black & white interstitials of director Stanley Kwan and Maggie Cheung (as herself) discussing the life of Ruan Lingyu and the production of the film. As the film goes on, these distinct layers begin to fracture and smear, both emphasizing the unreality of the recreations and eliciting a deeper sense of truth to the real Ruan Lingyu that the film understands it can never fully capture. We discuss the way Kwan navigates his experimental form through the lens of classic melodrama (taking influence from the likes of Douglas Sirk) in order to create something that invites even as it antoginizes and provokes. Then, we consider the real Ruan Lingyu and some of her most well-known works (including 'The Goddess' directed by Wu Yonggang) and how the open construction of 'Center Stage' invites us to pursue further understanding rather than attempt to act as the final word on Ruan. Finally, we look at the state of the modern biopic and the furstrating lack on ingenuity and experiementation when approaching the titanic lives that these films consider. On 30 December 2003, Cantopop singer Anita Mui passed away from cervical cancer, amid an outpouring of grief from her fans. Thirty years later, this disease is still the fourth most common cancer, and continues to kill one woman every two minutes. The World Health Organization has laid out a strategy to eliminate cervical cancer worldwide as a public health problem, where all countries reach an annual incidence rate of four cases per 100,000 women or less. But how is elimination possible, when HPV vaccination is still uneven, screening uptake is low, and there are barriers to accessing treatment, including gaps in insurance coverage? Professor Dr Woo Yin Ling, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist from University Malaya Medical Centre, and Dr Murallitharan Munisamy, Managing Director of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, join us discuss what Malaysia needs to prioritise to achieve the elimination agenda along with the rest of the world. The writer Jessica Ritchey returns to the pod for a show about the continuing collapse of the superhero movie as the dominant American film genre with the latest MCU entry, Nia DaCosta's The Marvels, which cost $270 million dollars and after 4 release date changes finally opened last week and bombed as hard as a Marvel movie has ever bombed, especially considering it's the sequel to a movie that made well over a billion dollars in 2019. We discuss what went wrong with The Marvels and the troubles now plaguing the MCU but we also (perhaps unfairly) compare this film to an excellent cinematic female superhero team up, Johnnie To's 1993 Hong Kong action extravaganza The Heroic Trio starring Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung.

The series of events unfolded after the late Hong Kong superstar retired from the music scene in 1992. Synopsis: Can I Tell You Something Crazy is a new scripted series under the #PopVultures banner, which examines with fresh eyes, events that shook Asian media and entertainment. In 1992, Anita Mui was only 29, but she had made up her mind to retire from music. The late Hong Kong superstar, known for songs like Bad Girl (1985) and The Song Of Sunset (1989), bid farewell to her singing career with a series of 30 concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum that wrapped in January 1992. Mui, who was also known for her acting performances in movies like Rouge (1987), wanted to shed her pop diva persona to focus on acting and charity. She was ready for a career pivot and a new beginning. Unfortunately, things went sideways quickly. On May 4, 1992, Mui was at a celebration with friends at Take One karaoke, having fun and drinks. But at the same venue was a film producer named Wong Long-wai, who reportedly asked her to do the thing she had retired from - to sing for him. She refused. Wong slapped her across the face. Three days later, he was shot dead. In this episode of Can I Tell You Something Crazy, #PopVultures host Jan Lee looks at the infamous Anita Mui slapping incident that forced the pop diva to flee her beloved city, and looks back at how Hong Kong's golden era of cinema came to be overrun by guns, triads and thugs. It's a short one today! Samantha recommends the crime thriller A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham, Indy rewatches Rumble in the Bronx and recounts Jackie Chan mania, and we get ready to watch the Keanu Reeves action thriller John Wick! Rumble in the Bronx (Chinese title: 紅番區, Hong Faan Kui (transl. Red Turn District)[6] is a 1995 American-Hong Kong martial arts film starring Jackie Chan, Anita Mui and Françoise Yip. It was directed by Stanley Tong, with action choreographed by Chan and Tong. Released in Hong Kong in 1995, Rumble in the Bronx had a successful worldwide theatrical run, and brought Chan into the North American mainstream. The film is set in the Bronx area of New York City, but was filmed in and around Vancouver, Canada.[7] The film grossed US$76 million worldwide against a US$7.5−13 million budget, making it the most profitable film of 1996. Stacy Willingham- A Flicker in the Dark When Chloe Davis was twelve, six teenage girls went missing in her small Louisiana town. By the end of the summer, her own father had confessed to the crimes and was put away for life, leaving Chloe and the rest of her family to grapple with the truth and try to move forward while dealing with the aftermath. Now twenty years later, Chloe is a psychologist in Baton Rouge and getting ready for her wedding. While she finally has a fragile grasp on the happiness she's worked so hard to achieve, she sometimes feels as out of control of her own life as the troubled teens who are her patients. So when a local teenage girl goes missing, and then another, that terrifying summer comes crashing back. Is she paranoid, seeing parallels from her past that aren't actually there, or for the second time in her life, is Chloe about to unmask a killer? I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

Hit Factory's heroic duo take on Johnnie To's 1993 Honk Kong action spectacular, 'The Heroic Trio'. It's a super hero origin story featuring three of Hong Kong cinema's most remarkable leading women - Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh, & Maggie Cheung - and a wellspring of imagination & style unrivaled by western action movies of the era. We discuss the dynamic burst of imagination at the center of Hong Kong's Golden Era of action cinema that birthed the talents of To, Tsui Hark, John Woo and countless others, the film's nuanced and progressively feminine approach to its storytelling, the brilliant costume design...and the movie's commendable contempt toward children. In the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Hong Kong's movie industry was mostly funded and run by the city's Triads. They often threatened actors and actresses to agree to certain roles, and when one of these 'discussions' resulted in beloved actress Anita Mui being slapped through the face, it started a gang war between two of the warring gangs in Hong Kong. Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein and Hong Kong Cinema expert and Warner Bros archivist Jeff Briggs join the podcast to discuss Hong Kong Cinema and the Golden Harvest library of films owned by Warner Bros. Jeff Briggs provides a brief history of Hong Kong Cinema, starting with the Shaw Brothers and then the development of Golden Harvest in the 1970s and 1980s. George Feltenstein provides background on the partnership between Golden Harvest and Warner Bros with Bruce Lee's “Enter the Dragon” in 1973 and how that later led to the purchase of a portion of the Golden Harvest Library. He also discusses the release of some of the Golden Harvest films on DVD and on the now-defunct Warner Archive streaming service, FilmStruck, before diving into a review of the two films that have been released on Blu-ray, the Jackie Chan films “Mr. Nice Guy” and “Drunken Master II.” George details the restoration that went into these films and Jeff corrects the misperceptions that have surrounded the “Drunken Master II” subtitles and language selections. Uttar Pradesh has a problem with cows. Cows are considered sacred by Hindus, and since the BJP state government banned illegal slaughterhouses five years ago, small farmers have had no way of legally disposing of unwanted cows. There are now nearly a million stray cows roaming around farmland, destroying crops, and causing injury and even death, as BBC Hindi's Nitin Srivastava reports. Brownie, Chile's 'first dog' Chile's recently elected president, Gabriel Boric, won with the highest number of votes in Chilean history. But equally popular is his dog, Brownie. With his own social media accounts, Brownie has proclaimed himself 'the first dog of the Republic of Chile'. BBC contributor Constanza Hola tells us more about her country's most popular pet. Avocado rustling in Kenya Kenya's avocado sector has become so lucrative that organised criminal gangs are targetting growers. Farmers have started to hire vigilantes and even use drones to guard their trees, as Emmanuel Igunza of BBC News in Kenya discovered. Yoga refusenik Suhail Haleem Another chance to enjoy BBC India's Suhail Haleem's lack of flexibility when it comes to India's famous export, yoga. AFCON: 'fouled by the pitch' and other excuses BBC Africa's Peter Okwoche and BBC Sport's Isaac Fanin share their experiences of covering the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon, and taking on Yaoundé's Greenfield Football Academy Under 10s (and losing!). Remembering Anita Mui There's nostalgia in Hong Kong for singing star Anita Mui, who died in 2003, but who's remembered by many and celebrated in a new film, Anita. Zhijie Shao has been reporting for BBC Chinese on her enduring fame. (Photo: A cow resting in Varanasi. Credit: Enzo Tomasiello/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

Šajā nedēļā skaļi izskanēja Naukšēnu sociālās korekcijas iestādes vārds. Žurnālisti no Latvijas Televīzijas raidījuma "Aizliegtais paņēmiens" kopā ar Bērnu tiesību aizsardzības inspekcijas cilvēkiem bija ieradušies izglītības iestādē, lai skaidrotu, kas notiek ar tiem bērniem, kuri ar tiesas spriedumu tiek nosūtīta šo iestādi, lai viņus tur, droši vien jālieto šoreiz tas vārds, pāraudzinātu. Tas, ko varējām vērot televīzijas ekrānos, lielā mērā arī atgādināja to, kas stāstīts par cietumos notiekošo: sodu sistēma, karceri, dzeloņstieples, ģedovščina. Raidījums bija ļoti kritisks, speciālisti tāpat. Izskanēja viedoklis, ka šāda iestāde Latvijā nevar pastāvēt un to reorganizēt nav iespējams.

Savukārt Izglītības un zinātnes ministrija sagatavojusi epidemioloģiskās drošības protokolu izglītības iestādēm, plānojot ļaut skolām darboties klātienē neatkarīgi no Covid-19 kumulatīvā rādītāja valstī.

So, one of the hottest movies at the box office at the moment is the latest in the Star Wars series, we felt this movie deserved a special episode to discuss what is happening. We asked Luke from Sons of Obiwan Lightsaber Academy to join us as he is one of the biggest Star Wars Nerds we know. So will say right at the outset that there will be spoilers in this if you haven’t seen the movie yet, but if you have taken this long to go see it then get out there and watch it. Now this might be a little different from other movie reviews/ discussions out there as we look at the evolution of different aspects of the series and also the arts of fighting in movies and special effects etc. Now we will advise that Buck and Luke are both super Nerds of the Star Wars universe and grew up watching these movies, read books (although Luke has read more than Buck, yep, someone has out read Buck on a topic) and just lived the life of a fan for decades. We discuss the highs and lows of this movie, what made us stop and wonder what the heck is happening. We also at the impact of other movies and stories have had on Star Wars. We discuss the language of fighting styles and the confused start to the final evolution of the current form of dance and prose employed in the Rise of Skywalker. Want to know what this means then listen in and try to keep up with the discussion. Kur vēl to rast? Par to saruna ar mūsu studijas viesiem. Šeit ir Latvijas Izglītības un zinātnes darbinieku arodbiedrības vadītāja Inga Vanaga, Izglītības un zinātnes ministrijas parlamentārā sekretāre Anita Muižniece, Latvijas Pašvaldību savienības padomniece Ināra Dundure un Saeimas Izglītības, kultūras un zinātnes komisijas deputāte Marija Golubeva.

Special Guests: Karen Fang, Kenneth E. Hall, Barna William DonovanGuest Co-Hosts: Beth AccomandoAfter a brief hiatus, The Projection Booth returns with a discussion of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (1986). The film is seen as a hallmark of the “heroic bloodshed” subgenre of action films, doing for gunplay what a generation of Hong Kong films had done with swords. The film tells the tale of Ho (Ti Lung), a criminal whose younger brother, Kit (Leslie Cheung), is a police officer. He's betrayed by a fellow gangster (Waise Lee) and sent up the river. When he returns to Hong Kong he wants to stay on the right side of the law which is more difficult than it should be.The film speaks to loyalty, brotherhood, and put Chow Yun-Fat on the map as a bankable action star.Cinema Junkie's Beth Accomando and Mike wax fondly about the glory days of HK Cinema, twin brothers, strange sequels, and the true colors of a hero.

Shaw also tried his hand at producing American films in the late 70s and early 80s, including 1982 sci-fi classic "Blade Runner" and 1979 disaster thriller "Meteor." The influence of Shaw's movies spans vast distances. When talking about his preparation for the action film "Kill Bill", American movie director Quentin Tarantino told the press he had watched one old Shaw Brothers movie a day for a year, if not three. Tarantino also paid tribute to Shaw by beginning the film with the Shaw Brothers scallop and trumpet fanfare. As a shrewd businessman, even in his heyday, Shaw was able to sense the future would be in television. In 1967, Shaw co-founded TVB, which remains Hong Kong's dominant TV station. TVB has now grown into a multi-billion dollar TV empire with channels broadcast in 30 markets including the U.S., Canada and Taiwan. For TV audiences, TVB is the symbol of many classic television series of which only the slightest hint would send people into nostalgic daydreams. At the top of the list of classic shows is of course "the Bund", a love story between gangster boss Hui Man-Keung and Fung Ching-ching, daughter of a wealthy tycoon. And "Looking Back in Anger", a retrospective on business tycoon Ding Yau Kin's life. Another memorable classic was the 1983 martial art TV series "The Legend of the Condor Heroes". With its ever sought-after TV series, TVB has seen a considerable amount of talented individuals rise to stardom internationally. Actor Chow Yun-fat, actress Maggie Cheung, singers Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui and director Wong Kar-wai all started out at TVB. Chow Yun-fat attributes his success to Shaw. "He started TVB with his bare hands all by himself. He trained many talented stars like me. May he rest in peace." Shaw set up the TVB Talent Training Course and the beauty contest Miss Hong Kong Pageant in order to produce future stars for his TV station. One thing he probably would never have imagined is that many of the stars that the two programs cultivated, such as Tony Leung, Lau Kar-ling and Michele Monique Reis, later became the pillars of the Chinese showbiz industry. In 2011, Shaw retired from his position as chairman of TVB at the age of 104 after more than 40 years of service. However, what made Shaw more of an enduring influence is perhaps his philanthropy. He made billions in film and television and gave back nearly as much to society. Since 1985, he donated about 4.75 billion Hong Kong dollars on educational programs across the Chinese mainland. On a map recently provided by one of China's largest search engines, buildings adorned with Shaw's name are visible in clusters across the country. And in Hong Kong, it seems as if half of the public buildings have his name on them. Shaw also established "The Shaw Prize" in 2002, later widely regarded as the "Nobel of the East"; an annual award honoring those who made significant contributions to academic and scientific research or application. And on occasions of disaster relief, he was often among the top donors. Leung Chun-ying, chief executive of Hong Kong spoke out on Shaw's contributions to society. "Shaw has made great philanthropic contributions in Hong Kong, to education in both Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland and to scientific research globally. He is a venerable father figure to us." Run Run Shaw was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. China's Purple Mountain Observatory discovered an asteroid in 1964 and named it 2899 Runrun Shaw in honor of him. Across 107 years, Run Run Shaw became a guiding light that will illuminate generations for years to come.
