Bonus! Johnny To's windswept, smoldering superhero masterpiece may not exactly exist in the Batman continuity… but we sure as hell are going to talk about it anyway.Starring Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, and Maggie Cheung, we thought this bonkers dream of an action noir would be the perfect appetizer for our upcoming Schumacher era. Whether it was intentional or not, Schumacher's films look suspiciously similar to THE HEROIC TRIO. And we're going to get to the bottom of it!Join the conversation on our Discord at https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx and get more Eye of the Duck on our Patreon show, After Hours https://www.patreon.com/EyeoftheDuckPodReferences:Special FeaturesSuperhero SisterhoodNo Ordinary Actor: Anthony WongPlanet Hong Kong: Popular Cinema and the Art of Entertainment by David BordwellHong Kong Cinema: The Extra Dimensions by Stephen TeoHong Kong New WaveSight & Sound March 1995 Vol. 5 Production HistoryMetrograph Production HistoryHouse of Asian Cinema James Pax InterviewHenry Sheehan Johnnie To InterviewMichelle Yeoh Takes Down ConanCredits:Eye of the Duck is created, hosted, and produced by Dom Nero and Adam Volerich. This episode was edited by Michael Gaspari. This episode was researched by Parth Marathe. Our logo was designed by Francesca Volerich. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinemaThis February at Catching Up On Cinema, is “Ladies' Night”!All month long we'll be reviewing action movies headlined by women! This week, Trevor conducts a solo review Johnnie To and Ching Siu-Tung's, The Heroic Trio (1993) and Executioners (1993)!Starring the trio of prestigious Hong Kong starlets, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, and Michelle Yeoh, the pair of films were a box office smash in Asia in the early 90's, and was just recently inducted into the Criterion collection via a fabulous new 4k transfer.Singer/actress Anita Mui sadly passed away in 2003, however her cultural footprint remains vast, and in fact a biopic and documentary were made about her in recent years.Maggie Cheung has been a fixture in Hong Kong cinema since the 80's, earning critical acclaim in her later career collaborations with director Wong Kar-wai.Like her costars Mui and Cheung, Michelle Yeoh has been a fixture of Hong Kong and Chinese cinema for decades now, however in more recent years, beginning in the late 90's, her popularity and prominence in film markets outside of Asia has grown by leaps and bounds, culminating in her recently receiving an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).Follow us on Instagram @catchinguponcinemaFollow us on Twitter @CatchingCinemaLike, share, subscribe, and we'll catch you next time!
For the second of our four live podcasts - co-hosted by the 'Life of Action' author, Mike Fury - we welcome back the British stunt coordinator and former Hong Kong stuntman, Jude Poyer. Jude's first appearance was on Episode 48 back in 2019. Now, in 2025, he is the action director behind Xavier Gens' violent French brawler, 'Farang' (aka 'Mayhem!'), and Gareth Evans' lauded co-collaborator, having worked with 'The Raid' director on his landmark UK crime series, 'Gangs of London', and the eagerly-awaited Netflix production, 'Havoc', starring Tom Hardy. In this wide-ranging conversation, Jude unveils his secret to coordinating a great action sequence, what it feels like to be kicked in the face by Yuen Biao, the difference between working in Hong Kong and the UK, and why he thinks Gareth Evans might be one of the best action filmmakers working in the industry today. This episode was recorded live at the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford, UK, on 12 November 2024, following a screening of the crazy Hong Kong superhero film, 'The Heroic Trio' (1993), directed by Johnnie To, produced by Tony Ching Siu-tung, and starring Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung. Screening as part of the British Film Institute's Art of Action season - in association with the Independent Cinema Office and Film Hub South East - we also discuss the film and its impact, as well as sharing our thoughts on the lasting legacy of the 'golden age' of Hong Kong action cinema.LINKSJude Poyer on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reelpowerstunts/Jude Poyer on X: https://twitter.com/ReelPowerStuntsJude Poyer on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ReelPowerStuntsJude Poyer's website: http://www.reelpowerstunts.com/ Jude Poyer on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0694706/Jude Poyer on Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast, Episode 48: http://kungfumovieguide.com/kfmg-podcast-s04-episode-48-jude-poyer/ Mike Fury on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themikefury/Mike Fury's website: https://www.mikefury.net/'The Heroic Trio' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: http://kungfumovieguide.com/the-heroic-trio/ 'The Heroic Trio' trailer: https://youtu.be/zhrYrExHi2s Buy 'The Heroic Trio' on Blu-ray: https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/7155-the-heroic-trio-executionersVisit the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford: https://uppcinema.com/ Learn more about the BFI's Art of Action season: https://www.bfi.org.uk/art-actionA huge thank you to Independent Cinema Office (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/) and Film Hub South East (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/film-hub-south-east/) Hosted on Acast. The writer Jessica Ritchey returns to the pod for a show about the continuing collapse of the superhero movie as the dominant American film genre with the latest MCU entry, Nia DaCosta's The Marvels, which cost $270 million dollars and after 4 release date changes finally opened last week and bombed as hard as a Marvel movie has ever bombed, especially considering it's the sequel to a movie that made well over a billion dollars in 2019. We discuss what went wrong with The Marvels and the troubles now plaguing the MCU but we also (perhaps unfairly) compare this film to an excellent cinematic female superhero team up, Johnnie To's 1993 Hong Kong action extravaganza The Heroic Trio starring Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung. Original Air Date: Monday 25 September, 9 pm Eastern Description: Dean was still battling Covid and Phil was heading to Savannah, Georgia, so this week's installment of was recorded several days early. In it, Dean offers suggestions to Phil of sites he should visit in the Hostess City of the South and Phil regales Dean with the history of the place where he would be staying. Dean and Phil preview what they expected to happen in the ongoing labor strife in Hollywood. A deep discussion of improv leads to Dean recounting a particularly hilarious scene in which he once performed. This leads to a preview of Richard Linklater's new movie, Hit Man, and that leads to a discussion of two classic films celebrating anniversaries this year: the Hong Kong actioner Executioners (aka Heroic Trio 2) starring Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh, and Maggie Cheung, which turns 30 this year, and perhaps the greatest concert film of all time, Jonathan Demme's Stop Making Sense, which turns 40 this year and which has inspired Talking Heads reunions. Finally, a beloved English folk singer and a former piano prodigy get remembered in "Celebrity Deaths".
If it's a secret that one of your hosts loves flying guillotine movies, it's a very badly kept one. So when Steve dug up two flying guillotine movies with what some might call a ludicrously specific connection, it was happy times in podcastland! Come join us as we unpack THE DEADLY SILVER SPEAR and THE HEROIC TRIO - but don't forget to duck and dodge, and also check out S9E17 of MYTHBUSTERS for more info on how you might make your very own flying guillotine!

Brian and Jerome have wrapped on the Ip Man series, and what better way to end the month than with a special bonus "Easter" episode. We celebrate Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win by briefly taking a look at two of her sequels, "Royal Warriors" and "Heroic Trio 2: Executioners". One is really good. One is not. It's a fun way to end "Punchy Kicky (Ip) Man" month.
Highly stylized, dark, and often gross, THE HEROIC TRIO is kind of a dark, inverted portrait of superhero movies that would come to dominate box offices in the 2000s. In this episode, we trace the impact of movies like THE HEROIC TRIO through the decades, from Tim Burton's BATMAN (1989) to Sam Raimi's DARKMAN (1990) and beyond. We also talk about the pissing kids and so much more! Hit Factory's heroic duo take on Johnnie To's 1993 Honk Kong action spectacular, 'The Heroic Trio'. It's a super hero origin story featuring three of Hong Kong cinema's most remarkable leading women - Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh, & Maggie Cheung - and a wellspring of imagination & style unrivaled by western action movies of the era. We discuss the dynamic burst of imagination at the center of Hong Kong's Golden Era of action cinema that birthed the talents of To, Tsui Hark, John Woo and countless others, the film's nuanced and progressively feminine approach to its storytelling, the brilliant costume design...and the movie's commendable contempt toward children. I'm coming at this review as a fan of the game, fan of Hong Kong cinema, and as a martial artist. As a fan of Hong Kong cinema I expected so much more from this movie. I was born in the 80's but I'm a child of the 90's and that was the era where great martial arts films were being imported from Hong Kong. I grew up on films like Millionaires Express, Once Upon a Time in China, Iron Monkey, Wing Chun and Heroic Trio just to name a few.
