Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy, says biofuels are important to the agricultural economy because they can address trade gaps. Biofuels also give the U.S. national security, which Skor notes the Trump administration has recognized. In ethanol news, a summer waiver was approved for E15 nationwide, but Skor argues the U.S. shouldn't have to keep waiting on waivers or special state action to get year-round E15. Congress has to pass legislation to make it permanent. Last year, the U.S. exported more ethanol than ever, about 12 percent of what was produced. On trade, ethanol can help overcome a trade deficit with a country, so it's a great way to balance it out, Skor says. Meanwhile, Brazil is a fierce competitor and ramping up corn and ethanol production.The Brazilian government is advocating for more markets, and the U.S. needs to do the same, Skor says. "What we don't want is to lose market access to the Brazilians." The Wisconsin Biofuels Association, Wisconsin Corn Growers Association, and Wisconsin Soybean Association hosted a lobby day at the State Capitol this week. Roughly 35 farmers met with over a dozen lawmakers to advance policies that support renewable fuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel. Sara Stelter, past president of the Wisconsin Soybean Association, advocated on behalf of her diversified farm in Waushara County. Stelter tells Mid-West Farm Report that her trade associations are seeking consumer incentives for ethanol and biodiesel - Wisconsin is the only Midwestern state without state-level biofuels support. Incentives would be a 5-cent-per-gallon tax credit for higher blends i.e. E15 and E85. Gov. Tony Evers included $50 million in his budget for the Agricultural Road Improvement Program. Oceanographer Kristen Davis, an authority on ocean physics and climate sustainability, discusses the growing excitement around seaweed and kelp as tools to combat climate change. Like trees on land, these underwater plants use photosynthesis to absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into organic matter. When they die, some of that carbon may sink to the ocean depths. However, the science is still evolving and there's a lot we don't yet understand about how seaweed farming might impact carbon sequestration. The payments will be allocated by crop. The payments are part of the stopgap bill, which also includes significant support for the farming community.Argentina's Forecast: Dry Conditions for Soybean AreasArgentina's soybean areas are expected to receive less than half of their normal rainfall over the next two weeks. Although the forecast is slightly wetter than before, the overall trend remains dry. Temperatures are expected to run above normal, further stressing crops. While Argentina is projected to account for just 12% of global soybean production, it is expected to make up 37% of soybean meal exports.Trump Plans to Repeal the Inflation Reduction ActPresident-elect Donald Trump is planning to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was passed by the Biden administration in August 2022. The repeal of the IRA could also risk the loss of 45Z tax credits, which support farming practices that reduce emissions and improve soil carbon. Repealing the IRA would likely require Congressional action, and its rollback could impact the clean energy sector.US Prevails in GMO Corn Trade Dispute with MexicoThe US won a trade dispute with Mexico over its ban of US genetically modified (GMO) corn. A trade panel ruled that Mexico's ban violated the USMCA trade agreement and was not scientifically based. The ban had previously applied to GMO corn for human consumption, but US producers were concerned that it might be extended to GMO corn used for animal feed.Funds Reduce Net-Long Position in CornFunds reduced their net-long position in corn last week, with large money managers reported as net sellers of 8,000 corn contracts. Soybean and SRW wheat contracts also saw net selling.USDA's COF ReportThe USDA's Cattle on Feed report shows that the number of cattle on feed as of December 1 was 12 million head. Placements in November were reported at 96% of year-ago levels. Marketings last month came in at 99% of year-ago levels.

Coral Reef Connectivity: Dr. Bracco's team is using machine learning to study the connectivity among coral reefs, which is crucial for understanding how larvae disperse and how healthy ecosystems can support one another. The research highlights the dynamic nature of coral ecosystems, particularly in the Pacific, where certain areas can recover from bleaching events due to the exchange of larvae. In contrast, the Atlantic faces challenges due to pollution and overfishing, which hinder recovery. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The episode emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary work in addressing climate issues.
