With oil prices volatile and supply routes like the Strait of Hormuz under pressure, governments around the world are racing to secure their energy supply. One of the tools many are turning to is biofuels, blended into diesel and petrol and often produced from crops such as palm oil, soy, sugarcane and maize. That can sound like a climate win. But it can also mean new pressure on forests, peatlands, food systems and the communities who depend on them. Host Loa Worm is joined by Patrick Schröder, Senior Research Fellow at Chatham House, to explore whether biofuels can really deliver energy security without driving deforestation. From Indonesia's move from B40 to B50, to Brazil's ethanol experience, India's blending programmes and the challenge of indirect land-use change and deforestation, the conversation looks at how today's political decisions on energy can ripple all the way into the forest. The episode also explores the role of certification systems such as FSC, RSPO and ISCC. Patrick explains why certification can be a genuine safeguard, but not a political shortcut. Biofuels are neither a silver bullet nor a villain. It all depends on how they are governed.

The U.S. Senate has yet to take action on allowing E-15 use year round across the nation. It's a frustrating spot for Wisconsin biofuels facilities to be in. Erik Huschitt, General Manager at Badger State Ethanol in Monroe, and current President of the WI Biofuels Association feels it. He tells Pam Jahnke that "big oil" is actually on E-15's side in this debate. The problem, he says, is a small group of midsized refiners that have been getting a lot of benefits from the current system. Huschitt notes that consumers are on board, big oil is in support, but the lobbying arm of those midsized refiners is stopping any forward progress in D.C. Gorgeous weekend on the way for Wisconsin. The only thing missing is a little rain to keep coaxing crops along. Stu Muck gives us the warm, dry details through Monday. The weather this spring has come in fits and spurts for livestock owners. Kiley Allan finds out that horse owners need to exercise a little caution introducing horses to the spring grass that has accelerated in growth lately. Dr. Lisa Neeson, equine vet at Irongate Equine Clinic, says that horse with Cushing's, Equine Metabolic Syndrome, or those carrying extra weight could be at risk. She says putting horses out on pasture for just 30-60 minutes at time is smart. She also suggested those visits happen between 10 a.m. - and 3 p.m. when sugar levels in grasses are lower. When consumers pick up a package of beef at the store, they may not understand everything that influences the price shown on that package. Stephanie Hoff introduces labor strikes as an unnoticed influence on some of those prices. Michael Jewett is a pioneer of cell-free biotechnology. Instead of using living microbes as factories, he uses their internal molecular machinery to make valuable proteins, medicines, diagnostics, and other chemicals. Jewett recently used the technique for vaccine production in an approach that could produce up to 150,000 doses from one liter. He believes cell-free biotech could democratize the production of essential medicines, improve water safety, and help convert atmospheric carbon into useful products, among other promising possibilities. “It's just-add-water biotechnology,” Jewett tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast. SHORTLY before IMO's 21st Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships and its 84th Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting, two leading environmental researchers warn that those meetings' expected focus on biofuels will not solve shipping's carbon emissions problems. As Comer explains, decisions on which fuels will qualify under any IMO climate policy are being developed now, along with their corresponding lifecycle assessment guidelines. Any mistake in drafting those guidelines will take decades to fix, he predicts but, as they stand, they do not account for the emissions that correspond to the ‘indirect land use change' emissions linked to biofuel production, he says. Menezes underlines in the podcast the importance of considering the social and economic sustainability aspects of biofuels and explains why she believes that, if IMO ignores these impacts of biofuels, “we risk a transition that might look green on paper, but creates significant negative impacts on health, pollution and local economies”. Both speakers explain that biofuel might appear attractive to regulators because of its cost, but they say that, if shipping adopts biofuel, global demand for it will triple by 2035, leading to significant impacts on other food prices and availability and to environmental damage caused as more land is turned over to its production. In their podcast, they also raise a range of other concerns; for example, making biofuels from waste products might perversely encourage fraud and the creation of more waste, Menezes says. She is also concerned about biomethane, which poses the same climate risks as its conventional counterpart as a result of methane slip — which is 80 times more potent than CO2. To produce biofuels in a sustainable way requires “really strong protections”, Comer says, for example to prevent fraud during its production and to protect human rights, water quality and other environmental aspects. Such models already exist, he says, citing the International Civil Aviation Organization and the FuelEU Maritime regulation. He goes on to say that e-fuels made using green hydrogen are the best zero-carbon fuels, rather than biofuels. And Menezes reminds listeners that net zero fuels are not the only way to reduce shipping's emissions. The starting point, she says, should be “the prioritisation of speed reduction and wind propulsion. These are some of the most effective tools we have”.

Dr. Donald L. Smith is the Distinguished James McGill Professor in the Department of Plant Science at McGill University. He is also CEO of BioFuelNet Canada, Head of Biomass Canada, and Head of the McGill Network for Innovation on Biofuels and Bioproduct. Don's research examines relationships between plants and the microbes that live in association with them, particularly in the roots. He and his collaborators have discovered evidence of signaling between plants and microbes, including microbial signaling that causes plants to grow better. They also uncovered that plants respond much more strongly to signals in the presence of drought or cold stress. Now they are expanding their investigations to examine a wide range of plant-associated microbes to better understand the signals they send and how they may impact plant health and resilience. Outside of the lab, Don loves to unwind and recharge by going on walks and reading great novels. He is also an avid traveler who enjoys blending work with trips to new places whenever possible, turning conferences and collaborations into opportunities to explore the world. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Acadia University and his PhD from the University of Guelph. Afterwards, he worked as an Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Postdoctoral Fellow at Agriculture Canada before joining the faculty at McGill University in 1985. Over the course of his career, Don has received many awards and honors, including, the Clean50 award for contributions to sustainable development and clean capitalism in Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, in this case for significant contributions to intelligent agriculture . He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Agronomy, and he served as a Member of the Canada-US think tank on climate change and agriculture in North Eastern North America.
