What if academic standards didn't have to threaten your homeschool rhythm? In this episode, we explore how to translate grade-level expectations into the rich, lived learning already happening in your home. From Poetry Teatime to bird watching, baking, narration, read-alouds, and everyday conversations, we look at how whole experiences often contain the very skills listed in scope-and-sequence documents. Rather than turning homeschool into school-at-home, we can use standards as information, not intimidation. Today I want to talk about something that quietly landed in Canada earlier this year that I think deserves a lot more attention than it's been getting in real estate circles. CMHC — that's Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation — has released what they're calling the Housing Design Catalogue. And while it might sound like a government bureaucrat's PowerPoint project, I actually think this is more significant than most developers are giving it credit for. Now, here's where I want to zoom out and ask a bigger question. Could this model work beyond Canada?---------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

When is schoolwork really finished? If your child refuses the last five math problems, drags through copywork, or resists the assignment you carefully planned, the issue may not be laziness or defiance. It may have meaning. In this episode, we rethink what completion really means in homeschool. We also talk about how to document learning without turning home into school.Join us as we trade arbitrary finish lines for meaningful progress.Resources:Register for the Brave Writer Book Reveal on June 1st and 2nd – our biggest event of the year!Sign up for our free training webinars in June. Scott is with Brett Bohannon to talk about the fast-moving shift from basic AI chat tools to agent-driven Amazon workflows. They discuss Claude, OpenClaw, MCP servers, APIs, and how sellers can connect private catalog data, public marketplace data, and advertising insights into one AI-powered operating system. Brett shares how he uses AI agents to reduce repetitive Amazon tasks, audit catalogs, connect tools like Keepa and Data Dive, and build workflow automations for ads, inventory, and listing optimization. They also shed light on what this means for Amazon software, why unique data still matters, and how sellers can start using AI to solve specific operational problems instead of chasing every new tool. Summary In this episode, Andy welcomes back Steve Kahle, entrepreneur, executive, and fractional CIO, author of Leadership Recall: Harness Insights. Accelerate Innovation. LEAD WITH AUTHORITY. Steve first joined the podcast in episode 184 to discuss email overload. This time, the conversation turns to a challenge every leader faces: the forgetting curve. Research suggests we forget up to 83% of what we learn within a week, and Steve argues this is not just a learning problem, it's a leadership problem. Steve shares his CCR framework (Capture, Catalog, and Recall), along with practical tools such as the Anki flashcard app and the Email Me voice-note app, to build what he calls a learning operating system. The discussion covers how to design a recall fitness practice in as little as three minutes a day and how removing friction at every step keeps the system sustainable. If you're looking for a practical system to stop letting great insights slip away and start leading with more authority, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "I think God put in my heart to be a relentless optimizer. I like to see things work and work well." "When you really zoom out in life, those who are really successful have figured out what are the frameworks, what are the methodologies that work, and they simply apply those." "Our subconscious mind can handle about 11 million bits of data per second, but about 40 bits conscious mind." "I went all in. Christ totally transformed my heart, and I'm realizing that scripture memory is a superpower." "Time swiftly washes away the obvious." "Learning really is a privilege, and we need to be able to find time that works with our daily rhythms." "Three minutes a day is really all you need to be able to see tremendous traction on being able to recall things that matter" "Instead of 'I'm bad at remembering names,' you could, do a reframe like, 'Hey, I'm getting better at remembering people's names.'" Your estimates might look solid… but what if they're built on broken data?In this episode, we dive into one of the most overlooked (and quietly dangerous) problems inside your system: a messy, unmanaged cost catalog. If you've ever duplicated items, used vague cost codes, or just kept adding without cleaning things up, you could be introducing inconsistencies into every estimate you send, without even realizing it.We walk through what actually happens when your catalog spirals out of control, how it leads to inaccurate bids and useless job cost reports, and why so many contractors only notice the problem after their margins take a hit. More importantly, you'll learn what a clean, structured catalog really looks like, how it gives you clarity on every phase of a job, and how it becomes the foundation for smarter, more profitable decisions over time.If your numbers have ever felt “off” but you couldn't explain why, this episode will connect the dots.Don't let hidden chaos dictate your profits. Tune in now and take back control of your data.Support the show

In this Hip Hop Minute segment pulled from Episode 13 of the Dead End Hip Hop Podcast, we break down the recent debate sparked by former NBA players Kenyon Martin and Rashad McCants over whether Rick Ross has a stronger overall discography than Kendrick Lamar. Is this a legitimate argument, or does Kendrick’s catalog clearly separate him from Rozay? We dive into both artists’ bodies of work, their consistency, impact, and what makes this comparison so controversial among hip hop fans.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If you're hoping that adding AI to your analytics product or capabilities is going to unlock new revenue, sales, and greater user adoption, but you're not sure what's involved in this transformation, this episode is for you! Today, I'm talking with Juan Sequeda today, an expert in knowledge graphs and ontologies who most recently was Head of the AI lab at data.world, which was recently acquired by ServiceNow. Juan and I met while speaking at CDOIQ a few years ago, and after being on his former podcast “Catalogs and Cocktails.” (With a name like that, I naturally had him out to my local tiki bar while visiting Cambridge!) Talk-to-your-data products – effectively next-gen business intelligence applications – are a hot topic right now, and this has made much of Juan's PhD work in semantics highly relevant right now as companies try to make analytics more user-friendly via natural language. Juan is clear that the starting point for this transformation isn't the model or the UI, but actually the customer's workflow—and that was like music to my ears! Analytics only matters when it drives action, so the real challenge is not answering more questions, but enabling better decisions and outcomes. A key theme is semantics, which, in product design language, I think of as making users' mental models of their business or domain map logically to system and data models so that AI produces the right answers in the right context. Juan outlines a practical path to getting started with this: strong data modeling, a well-defined semantic layer, buy-vs-build considerations, and throughout, a constant focus on what the customer's workflow and problem is. Highlights/ Skip to: Juan Sequeda's background (2:14) Is AI for BI the way to go for proprietary analytics products? (4:30) Bolted-on AI versus transformational AI, and what customers are doing with current reporting (8:26) Knowing your product's boundaries and when extending into adjacent customer workflows stops making strategic sense (14:46) Setting proper expectations for non-technical founders around what AI can “answer” with analytics (18:43) The role of customer problems in informing the prerequisite technology and data decisions (24:37) What's the actual lift to add chat-with-your-data capabilities to a SaaS product: data foundation, semantic layer, and the build-vs-buy call (33:38) Why Juan thinks every company should become “AI-native” (41:20) AI might theoretically make for a better analytics UX, but are users ready to change their behavior or abandon the analytics tools they use now? What if your child's long, winding stories are not a distraction from learning, but the very foundation of it?In this episode, we explore the art of narration: the natural ability children have to tell what they notice, remember, imagine, and understand. Inspired by Charlotte Mason and the astronauts of Artemis 2, we look at how vivid description, precise vocabulary, metaphor, and careful listening help kids turn experience into language. We also talk about oral narration, written narration, jot-it-down practices, observation, public speaking, and why parents can become a child's own Mission Control.Listen in, and let's learn how to say: Copy kid joy!Resources:Learn more about Brave Writer's Worldbuilding class and other enthusiasm-sparking online classes!Explore NASA's “Observe the Moon Like an Astronaut” activityFind our favorite readalouds and nonfiction in the Brave Writer Book ShopBrave Writer class registration is open! Sneaker History Podcast - Sneakers, Sneaker Culture and the Business of Footwear
There are companies that sell shoes. And then there are companies that shape the way an entire generation experiences them. Eastbay was the latter... and most people have no idea how improbable the whole thing was.Art Juedes and Rick Gering started Eastbay out of a store in Wausau, Wisconsin. Two coaches with 16 years of combined college education, zero business courses between them, and a vision that shoe stores in this country were failing athletes. No one specialized. No one had inventory. No one knew what they were talking about when you called. So Art and Rick decided they would be the ones who did. What followed was one of the most consequential stories in sneaker history... one that most of us lived through without ever knowing the people behind it.In this episode of Outside The Box, Nick sits down with Art and Rick to talk about the moment Nike pulled 40% of their business overnight because Eastbay was too successful at mail order, how Shaquille O'Neal showing up to a Nike meeting in all Eastbay gear helped get them the exclusive back, the tent sales in Wausau where Air Jordans moved out of a parking lot and lines stretched for half a mile, Kevin Plank pitching Under Armour to them before Under Armour was anything, and why they invested $100,000 in a digital camera in 1989 so they could produce a catalog every three weeks while Phil Knight was asking how they did it so fast.Nick's personal connection to Eastbay runs deep... four siblings fighting over one catalog until his mom finally ordered a fifth. He built the original Eastbay Blog for Sole Collector. And this conversation is, as he puts it, probably one of the most important sneaker history conversations he's ever had on any show.Art and Rick's new book, The Book of Eastbay, is available now at BookofEastBay.com. All profits go to the Little Warriors Foundation, a childhood cancer charity.More Sneaker Business Insights at TheSneakerNewsletter.com
Shinji Kim, founder of SelectStar (acquired by Snowflake in December), joins the show to discuss the deal, the integration into Snowflake's Horizon catalog, and where data cataloging is actually headed. We get into the weeds on a claim Shinji makes early: in a few years, we may stop calling these things "data catalogs" at all. The category is evolving into an AI context layer, a living surface that combines metadata, semantic models, business glossaries, and ontologies, continuously updated by both humans and agents. Shinji walks through how SelectStar built toward this with semantic model management, MCP server support, and an AI agent that started serving data analysts and eventually answered business users' questions directly. We also dig into where data catalog implementations go wrong (spoiler: it's almost always adoption, not tooling), why marketing teams are an underrated ETL persona, and what it actually took to get acquired by Snowflake after three years as a premier partner.Plus: if Shinji were starting SelectStar today, what would she do differently? We talk about distribution in the AI era and how the startup playbook is mutating.Connect with Shinji:LinkedIn — https://www.linkedin.com/in/shinjikim/
What do our kids actually need to know before they leave home? In this episode, we explore the everyday life skills that often get overlooked, from tying shoes and folding laundry to handling money, filling out forms, speaking with customer service, hosting guests, managing time, and learning how to do what life requires next. We talk about why practical competence is part of education, not separate from it, and why homeschooling gives us a beautiful chance to teach these skills in real life, at the right moment. Today, we're sharing our conversation with poet Ross Gay, who reminds us that joy isn't denial—it's connection. Not a way out of the world, but a way back into it. Together, we explore how to keep noticing what's still beautiful, how to rebuild our “delight muscle,” and why witnessing someone else's joy might be exactly what brings us back to ourselves. - Why joy is evidence of connection—not escapism - How to rebuild your “delight muscle” (even when it feels gone) - The surprising power of witnessing someone else's joy - Why “unknowing” the people you love can deepen connection - Small, daily practices to feel less alone and more alive About Ross: Ross Gay is an American poet, essayist, and professor committed to healing the world through observing and articulating joy, delight and gratitude. He won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for his 2014 book, Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude, which was also a finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry. A devoted community gardener, Ross is a founding board member of the Bloomington Community Orchard, a non-profit, free-fruit-for-all food justice and joy project. Kenneth Schwartz, VP of Global Data and Governance at Genmab, joins The Tech Trek to talk about what happens when data teams start applying software engineering discipline to modern data work.As AI raises expectations across the business, the challenge is no longer just building more dashboards or models. It is building data products, governance systems, and engineering cultures that can move from experiment to production in a repeatable way.In this episode, Kenneth shares how data teams can reduce sprawl, create stronger stakeholder alignment, shift governance earlier in the process, and use AI agents to accelerate the data roadmap without simply creating more noise.Key Takeaways• Data sprawl often starts with good intentions. Teams want to move fast, but without alignment they can end up solving the same problem in multiple ways.• Software engineering practices are becoming essential in data. Stable interfaces, data contracts, testing, modular design, and clear ownership help data teams scale with fewer downstream breaks.• Governance works better when it is built into the process early. Kenneth explains why governance should not be treated as a cleanup project after the data already exists.• AI can help data teams move faster, but speed alone is not the goal. The bigger opportunity is using automation to improve quality, reduce manual work, and give teams more time to think.• The future of analytics may depend on better foundations. Catalogs, semantic layers, data marketplaces, and governed metrics can make data more usable across BI, apps, chat interfaces, and agents.Timestamped Highlights00:00Kenneth Schwartz joins the show to discuss data engineering, governance, data products, and the growing role of AI in modern data teams.01:17Why data is still catching up to software engineering, and how low barriers to entry have created sprawl across dashboards, models, and experiments.02:55How stakeholder trust, honest conversations, and change management help reduce duplicated work without slowing the business down.05:23The software engineering ideas data teams should borrow, including stable interfaces, data contracts, tests, modularity, and repeatable frameworks.09:21Why infrastructure, data, and security teams need a more unified engineering culture as AI and data use cases become more complex.14:43What it means to shift governance left, and why governance has to become easier for the people expected to follow it.20:35How unstructured data, semantic layers, catalogs, metrics layers, and data marketplaces could change how analytics gets delivered.24:38Why faster delivery should not automatically mean more dashboards, more models, or more work products.Standout Line“More is not always better.”Pro Tips• Do not treat every new data request as a net new build. Look for overlap, reuse, and shared definitions before creating another dashboard or model.• Build trust before trying to reduce sprawl. People are more willing to standardize when they believe the data team is helping them win, not just saying no.• Move governance earlier in the lifecycle. Capture ownership, quality expectations, access needs, and context when data is ingested, not months later.• Use AI to accelerate the hard parts of the roadmap, but keep the focus on better decisions, not just faster output.Call to ActionSubscribe to The Tech Trek for more conversations with technology leaders building the data, AI, and platform foundations behind modern companies. If you grew up flipping through the Eastbay catalog, this one's for you.Mike sits down with Art and Rick, the two men behind one of the most beloved institutions in sneaker and athletic culture. Born two days apart in the same hospital, lifelong friends, and eventual business partners... their story is one of those rare ones that almost sounds made up. They break down how a simple idea rooted in getting the best athletic footwear to young athletes turned into a cultural phenomenon that shaped how a generation discovered sneakers. They also talk about their new book, The Book of Eastbay, which chronicles the whole journey... and yes, the proceeds go to childhood cancer research through the Little Water Foundation.
