Escuchar audio
Chapter 1 What's Washington Square by Henry James"Washington Square" is a novel by Henry James, first published in 1880. It tells the story of Catherine Sloper, a wealthy but socially awkward young woman living in New York City during the 19th century. The narrative explores her relationship with her domineering father, Dr. Austin Sloper, who disapproves of her suitor, Morris Townsend, seeing him as a fortune hunter. The novel delves into themes of love, loss, and the constraints of society. Catherine's struggle for autonomy, compounded by her father's skepticism and her own insecurities, positions the novel as a study of character and moral complexity. James' nuanced prose captures the subtleties of personal relationships against the backdrop of New York's upper-class society, making it a compelling exploration of social norms and individual desires.Chapter 2 Washington Square by Henry James Summary"Washington Square" is a novel by Henry James, first published in 1880. The story is set in New York City during the early 19th century and revolves around the life of Catherine Sloper, a young woman living in a wealthy but emotionally cold household.Catherine is the daughter of Dr. Austin Sloper, a well-respected but stern physician, and his deceased wife, who was a glamorous socialite. Catherine is described as plain and socially awkward, in stark contrast to the vibrant world that her mother once inhabited. Following her mother's death, Dr. Sloper becomes increasingly critical and dismissive of Catherine, believing that she lacks the charm and capabilities to attract a suitable husband. As the story unfolds, Catherine meets and falls in love with Morris Townsend, a charming and attractive young man who appears to be drawn to her wealth rather than her personality. Despite her father's disapproval of Morris—whom he considers a gold digger—Catherine is determined to pursue the romance. Dr. Sloper tries to dissuade Catherine from the relationship, but she is resolute in her feelings. The novel explores themes of love, money, familial obligation, and social class. It showcases James's keen observation of social dynamics and the complexities of human relationships, particularly through Catherine's struggles with her father and her own emotions. As the plot progresses, Morris's true intentions become dubious, and his reluctance to commit to Catherine as her fortune comes into question. This leads to a push-and-pull dynamic between love and financial security. Ultimately, Dr. Sloper's stern, oppressive nature clashes with Catherine's desire for independence and happiness. The novel concludes ambiguously, with Catherine's decision to stand firm in her beliefs, leaving the reader to ponder her future and the sacrifices she has made for love and self-identity. "Washington Square" is often regarded as a profound character study, examining the intersections of romance, ambition, and the constraints imposed by society and family.Chapter 3 Washington Square AuthorHenry James, an American-British author, is well-known for his psychological realism and intricate narratives that explore the consciousness of his characters. He was born on April 15, 1843, in New York City and passed away on February 28, 1916, in London, England. Washington Square"Washington Square" is one of Henry James's most celebrated works, published in 1880. The novel centers around the life of Catherine Sloper, a young woman in New York City who struggles against her father's overwhelming authority and societal expectations as she seeks love and independence. Other Notable WorksHenry James is known for many significant works. Some of his most outstanding titles include:The Portrait of a Lady (1881) This is considered one of his masterpieces, focusing on the character Isabel Archer and her quest for personal freedom and identity. The Turn of the Screw
Do you know it's been 50 years since 'Radar Love', first hit the airwaves? Ever thought Golden Earring was a one-hit wonder? Do you know how they got their name? Find out all during this episode as Drummer Cesar Zuiderwik shares his stories and memories. Golden Earring, formed in 1961 in The Hague, stands as one of rock's longest-running and most influential bands, boasting a career that spanned 60 years before disbanding in 2021. Originally called The Golden Earrings, they were inspired by 1960s pop but soon evolved their sound, embracing hard rock and progressive rock, which led them to international fame. Founding members George Kooymans (guitar, vocals) and Rinus Gerritsen (bass, keyboards) were later joined by Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute) and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums), solidifying a lineup that would remain remarkably stable for decades. Drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk joined Golden Earring in 1970, bringing a raw energy and technical prowess that transformed their rhythm section. Known for his explosive, versatile drumming, Cesar quickly became central to the band's sound, especially on tracks like the iconic Radar Love from their Moontan album. His dynamic and precise playing style added a layer of complexity and excitement, with live performances often showcasing his spectacular showmanship, including high-flying drum leaps and onstage antics that thrilled audiences worldwide. Cesar's impact was evident on other standout hits, such as Twilight Zone and When the Lady Smiles, where his drumming drove the intensity and drama of each song. His syncopated beats and intricate fills gave Golden Earring a powerful, unique edge that appealed to fans of both classic rock and hard rock genres. He was known not only as a musician but also as a performer with a theatrical edge, sometimes incorporating pyrotechnics and solo drumming displays that made Golden Earring's concerts legendary in the Netherlands and abroad. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Golden Earring continued to release successful albums and tour internationally, becoming a mainstay on both European and American stages. Cesar's influence extended beyond the band, as he became an inspiration for aspiring drummers, known for his attention to rhythm and his ability to adapt to different musical styles within rock. He continued to play with Golden Earring right up until their retirement in 2021, after George Kooymans was diagnosed with ALS. Today, Cesar remains active in the Dutch music scene, contributing to various projects, teaching drumming workshops, and mentoring young musicians. He is also active in another band called Sloper. A CT man survived the sinking of the Titanic 110 years ago, but he was accused of getting into a “women and children only” lifeboat by wearing a dress. The problem is, it was a completely fabricated story. Yet, the lie followed William Sloper for the rest of his life, because his father urged him to ignore the controversy. In the absence of a denial, the story stuck. The truth finally emerged, but not in time for Sloper. This intriguing tale will be told by Cathy Nelson, Librarian Emeritus of the Berlin Public Library.

Ally Sloper's Half-Holiday was the name of a weekly comic strip which first appeared on 3 May 1884. Before Superman, Spiderman, Desperate Dan and Dennis the Menace came Ally Sloper. From 1884 until the 1920s, the red-nosed social climber who poked fun at the English people and their customs was a household name and national favourite.Ally Sloper takes us into the realms of the first comic strip character whole Beano and Dandy. This comic strip started it all. Here is a man who became an institution, a national hero. People actually believed that he existed, they even wrote to him and joined his club. There were medals presented in his name.He represented the hopes and aspirations of a whole new class of people, brought about by the industrial revolution. The aristocracy was under threat and the perennial class dilemma was at the fore.Chris Harris and Chris Denys wrote this show based on Sloper, originally performed by Chris Harris. Ally Sloper is not brought to life by Steve Taylor. the play takes us to Ascot, Lords and the Summer Exhibition. The running gag throughout the play is the arrival (or not!) of Queen Victoria. We thought it appropriate to release this audio drama during the Platinum Jubilee weekend of her great, great granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II.Ally Sloper - Steve TaylorStudio Recording & Production - Harry Jacobsassisted by - Jacob TaylorMusic - James Hall https://www.jamesahall.co.uk/And a note from us:Thank you for listening. Richard isn't in the mood for a sideways look at the news, is he damaging his legacy? Or do you need to first have a legacy to damage it? The puppets are in an unpleasantly frisky mood as they discuss Boris Johnson, Jimmy Savile, testicular cysts, what it takes to impress Holly Willoughby, how it's possible that so many viewers of this show are married and how people have sex when they are different size. More predictions from Sibyl who says we'll be back in a fortnight.

This episode is part two of Andy's chat with Bruce Sloper where they discuss outside jobs to go to with structure, uniforms and discipline They pick up the conversation about leaving the forces space and what that's like for many ex service personnel. Yeah, It can be a little bit scary they agree but there is a pattern that ex military are drawn to. Emergency services, Police, counter-terrorism. The reason being a lot of those organizations in civilian street will be structured. They're got a uniform, a hierarchy, and are disciplined. That's what we're used to and what's missing with people getting out of the services. They get out of a disciplined, well structured organization to nothing and that's a shock. Bruce shared a glimpse of what that was like in his life at that low point. On the subject of PTSD he said information is better now than it was then and outside of war, a road accident, a traumatic incident, or something like that there are different reasons why people get PTSD. You get offered a few resettlement things on the way out of the ADF and then you become a family man, which I learned is another story of many stories. In my case a very supportive wife who looks after the household whether I was there or long periods away. Learning quickly if you come home, and start making home decisions, it doesn't work like that and I soon got pulled up. So you've got to adjust to your family lifestyle. Another adjustment is lack of social interaction with similar minded people when at home. We bought a block of land and I decided to work the land for 18 months, just mend fences and get the feel of the land but missing was the social interaction as we were out in the country. It was a depressing time but taught me to get out and join things and have projects. Bruce went on to talk about specific volunteer or social groups he knows are available and things that tend to be structured. Helping others is a way of moving past your own problems he commented. Andy returned to the important role Bruce's wife played by his side the whole way. Bruce admits she is a calming influence especially when things were really grim during his darkest days. In hind sight, since that period, it's been a successful life in a lot of different ways and in many areas. For the future, they are planning to sell the farm and retire but still be involved in farming. So returning to the questions around suicidal thoughts. When ideally should you seek help? I must admit I didn't but the question is why is that? In this episode, host Andy Fermo speaks with ex- Navy officer and Vietnam veteran Bruce Sloper. With quick thanks and an introduction they hop straight into it. Deciding to tell their story first about how they met, they agreed it was a “pretty bloody good” story. Bruce began, including the accidental counseling story of a young farmer Mum in Yeppoon. Her life's dream was not going very well Bruce explained and depression went with that. He was asked by a third party would I talk with her? As an older veteran Bruce explained he was familiar with “cashflow” problems so after getting to know the farmer Mum, Bruce went to a Veterans web page and put out the call to Young Veterans Central Queensland for help. “Truly I was just floored by the response” he continued enthusiastically. Some 20-30 left me thinking “how am I going to manage so many offers.” Enter Andy and family with Invisible Injuries Charity.Fitting well into the volunteer process and with another friend of Andy's from Toowoomba (S02E10 & 11), the generous response was reduced to two groups. These worker/supporters spent over a week onsite and was a success. All part of networking Andy agreed and part of our civic duty he added. Community mental health is for everyone, not just veterans, first responders and their supports especially during COVID and the times we are living in. For instance fostering a positive mindset is a big one if your on a farm on your own.Andy asked about Bruce's ADF service. He joined as an apprentice in the Navy out of West Sydney and went to sea for 4 years. There was a new system of training apprentices when he joined. So we're in square rig, round rig and the older folk in the Navy labeled us Mobi's. You would associate that with Whales or something like that but not in this case. That system of training went from 1956 to 1972. The RAF in the army and in the Navy were closed down and they went through the TAFE system. The Mobi acronym has hung about all these years and there is pride in the name. At Yeppoon RSL you mentioned the Square Rig stuff and that you were accelerated? It was the petty officers and chief petty officers who could see the skills coming out in the fleet Bruce explained and in those days we repaired things on the move with tradesmen on board. “So that was a great career!” Contact - Bruce SloperMember of: Young Veterans Central QueenslandMember of: Yeppoon RSL sub-branch Help Lines Open Arms (VVCS) | Lifeline | RedSix app"RESPECT, NO POLITICS, WE'RE VOLUNTEERS"Disclaimer: The accounts and stories are "Real lived experiences" of our guests some of the content may trigger Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) symptoms in some of our audience.

Dress creation brings out the romantic in me. When I looked ahead to my summer sewing, I thought if I could sew only one garment for the season, it would be a dress. Fiona, the Irish Laurel dress, satisfied my yearning to design and sew the perfect summer frock. This dress was a very satisfying project for my arty romantic style. In between sewing summer essentials - shorts and tees - I worked off and on to determine what design lines spoke to me about summer, mock up a miniature sloper pattern to test my ideas, draft a pattern from my sloper, and then finally to sew up Fiona, while summer was still on! *Pensamientos Primeros - Thinking through my idea for this summer dress *Technicos - Pattern Drafting and Kissing Zipper using a Prick Stitch *Pensamientos Finales - Fiona's Design Lines have roots in my own history

This month’s show is Fairy Inspired… Fairy Gardens that is– where my sewing (like my gardening) knows, It’s the Story that makes it. I was feeling pretty serious about my sewing when I got back into town last month. I was thinking that any day I’d get on with some serious pattern drafting work. Well, I haven’t! As a matter of fact whenever I thought about doing intense pattern work – either drafting or pattern alteration – I just found something else to do. And, as this has been an unusually busy summer for me, both professionally and personally, it was easy to put sewing off. Finally I just quit worry about what I’d planned to do, and responded to materials and projects that were singing out to me from the bins over my machine. And I was, once more, reminded of Lori Van Monnans’s advice to ‘sew forth now’. Sometimes you just gotta sew. By just responding to what I had on hand, I was working on getting in some summer garment essentials. They were essential because there items I really use at this time of year, and also essential to my happiness. It doesn’ t always matter whether I’m carrying through on garments I blue sky about. What matters is that I respond to my essential need to sew because, sewing enchants me. In this month’s show 1) Recent summer essential sewing – Journaling about what’s useful additions I’ve sewn for my summer armoire. Lucy Locket's Mobile Pocket Bag - http://www.meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/06/lucky-lockets-mobile-device-pocket-bag.html A new Tapestry Cap - http://www.meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/06/replacing-my-tapestry-cap.html Enchanted by Sewing(Aug 2014) Capping Off Summer - Creating a simple pattern for, and sewing a cap http://www.meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2014/08/ench-by-sew-023-capping-off-summer.html -Singing the Blues Tee - Pattern drafted from my moulage http://www.meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/07/sewing-summer-essentials-singing-blues.html - Rose Embellished Straight Skirt - Pattern drafted from my sloper http://www.meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/06/terminado-rose-embellished-straight.html 2) Technicos: Techniques I used to complete My Rose Embellished Denim Straight Skirt – Sloper to Pattern, and embellishment techniques Enchanted By Sewing Show (May 2015) Parlez Vous French Pattern Drafting ?http://www.meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/05/ench-by-sew-32-parlez-vous-french.html 3) Fairy Gardens Inspire My Sewing Whether gardening or sewing – it’s the story that makes the creation Postcard from California - How to Introduce a Fairy to a California Garden (Fairy Gardens) http://www.postcardfromcalifornia.blogspot.com/2015/07/how-to-introduce-fairy-to-california.html Both these Disney Garden books inspire my theme gardening style. I like the tabbed-cookbook style of DISNEY'S GARDENING WITH MICKEY when I want to quickly review the steps for creating a hanging basket or well illustrated how-tos for small topiaries. (There's lots of good info for larger topiaries and garden sculpting as well - I just haven't tried it out) In addition, there is good gardening (yard or pots) basic techniques as well as many recommendations for plants that work well for specific themes and temperatures. I highly recommend it, because I have used it a lot over a period of several years. I also turn regularly to my Secrets of Disney's Glorious Gardens book. It has a lot of similar techniques and information as DISNEY'S GARDENING WITH MICKEY and it also has lovely, lovely photos that inspire me. So when I want to sit down and just get ideas for themes or gardening styles, I pour through the photos in this book. Fairy magic is definitely adding a little more enchantment to my life, when it comes to gardening. And ….It’s also given me a better understanding of how to keep my sewing enchanting.
I first signed up for Lynda Maynards' French Pattern Drafting Class to help me improve my fit and alteration of commercial patterns and was surprised to find that Lynda's class opened my eyes to the idea of drafting my own patterns - an aspect of sewing I’d never expected I’d get involved with, and frankly considered beyond my skills. Studying with a teacher like Lynda and being inspired to try new things – that’s the kind of thing that keeps me, enchanted by sewing!1) Pensamientos Primeros – The Art of French Pattern Drafting My Pattern Work Postings Early Days in Pattern Drafting Class - Includes Kenneth King Link http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/02/drafting-my-back-block-learning-pattern.html More from Class http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/02/french-pattern-draftingmoulage-first.html and http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/03/fitting-in-sleeve-sloper-pattern-work.html Using My Sloper and Moulage to Draft Patterns http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/04/pattern-workparlez-vous-tee-shirt.html http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/04/damson-plumm-private-eye-nibbled-that.html Parlez Vous Flared Skirt? http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/04/pattern-work-parlez-vous-flared-skirt.html Pattern Work on Pinterest:Links to many pattern drafting and design resources https://www.pinterest.com/lrshimer/0-sewing-pattern-work/ 2) Technicos - On Wearing Ease Going from a Moulage to a Sloper and Back Again http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2015/05/parlez-vous-wearing-ease-moulage-to.html 3) Pensamientos Finales – My sloper...A garment for any occasion?
