Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Morgan Doughty's first written statement — given before Alex Murdaugh got to anyone — allegedly said Connor Cook took over driving the boat before the crash that killed Mallory Beach. By the next day, the story had changed. According to James Lasdun's new book The Family Man, a whispered conversation between survivors at the hospital happened while Alex was prowling the hallways, allegedly trying to force his way into patients' rooms and telling people what to say. The accepted narrative of who was behind the wheel may have been constructed after the fact. That's the kind of detail The Family Man is built on — patterns of manipulation that predate the murders by years and that have never been fully reported. After the staged roadside shooting, Alex sat with a sketch artist and created a composite of his supposed attacker. According to the book, the portrait looked like Anthony Cook, a boat crash survivor. With a bullet wound in his head, Alex was still allegedly pointing investigators toward specific people.Lasdun also uncovered a $5,000 personal check Alex wrote to a Yemassee police chief who was at the Moselle crime scene the night of the murders — backdated by months, never explained. And connections between Alex and a jellyfish-processing operation near Moselle, whose lawyer was convicted decades earlier of laundering drug money through offshore accounts. The book goes further into the psychology. Researchers have identified a type of family annihilator called "anomic" — men who see their families as extensions of their own success. When the empire falls, the family becomes obsolete. The documented cases that mirror Alex's profile share one constant: the people closest to the killer always described him as a loving family man. The first officer at Moselle said Alex's eyes were wrong — low blink rate, staring off like he was reading from a script. Hours later, he was sobbing in a SLED agent's car and it looked completely real. The book argues both may have been genuine simultaneously.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The first officer at the Moselle crime scene described Alex Murdaugh's eyes as wrong — low blink rate, staring off as if reading from a script. Hours later, in dashcam footage from a SLED agent's vehicle, Alex was sobbing and it looked absolutely real. James Lasdun's book The Family Man argues that the grief and the deception may have been happening at the same time — and that both were genuine. The research on psychopathy lists planning and impulsivity as traits of the same condition, not contradictions. The book draws on decades of criminal psychology and places Alex alongside documented cases that mirror his profile almost exactly. Jean-Claude Romand faked being a doctor for eighteen years, stole from everyone who trusted him, and killed his wife, both children, and his parents when the lies collapsed. Researchers classify this type as "anomic" family annihilators — men who see their families as extensions of their own success. When the empire falls, the family becomes obsolete. In every documented case, the people closest described the killer as a loving family man.But the psychology is only half the book. Lasdun uncovered manipulation going back years. Morgan Doughty's first written statement allegedly said Connor Cook was driving the boat the night Mallory Beach was killed — that story changed the next day after a whispered conversation at the hospital while Alex was allegedly in the hallways trying to get into patients' rooms. After the staged roadside shooting, Alex sat with a sketch artist and the composite of his "attacker" allegedly matched Anthony Cook, a boat crash survivor. He also wrote a $5,000 backdated check to a Yemassee police chief who was at the Moselle crime scene — never explained.Co-prosecutor Meadors suggested in closing that maybe Alex "just lost it." The book says the research supports both — calculated and impulsive, grief and performance, all operating in the same person at the same time.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? After the staged roadside shooting, Alex Murdaugh sat down with a sketch artist and helped create a composite of the person he said attacked him. According to James Lasdun's new book The Family Man, the portrait looked like Anthony Cook — one of the survivors of the boat crash that killed Mallory Beach. Alex had a bullet wound in his head and was still allegedly trying to direct investigators toward specific people tied to the boat case. That's not panic. That's a pattern. The book documents manipulation going back years before anyone was killed at Moselle. The complete interview with James Lasdun, author of The Family Man: Blood and Betrayal in the House of Murdaugh. Years of original reporting. Evidence the jury never saw. Psychology that's been documented for decades but never applied to this case. The book traces Alex's patterns back to the boat crash — where Morgan Doughty's first statement said Connor Cook was driving, before the story was rewritten. It surfaces deleted phone logs, backdated checks, and names prosecutors deliberately left off the jury's timeline. It reveals what the defense wanted to do at trial but couldn't — put Cousin Eddie on the stand after his failed polygraph. And it places Alex alongside documented family annihilators whose cases mirror his with chilling specificity. The psychology has been studied. The pattern is real. And it was hiding in plain sight.Everything in one conversation. The patterns, the gaps, and the darker truth.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A new book is reframing everything about the Murdaugh case — and it starts with the patterns nobody was paying attention to.James Lasdun's The Family Man: Blood and Betrayal in the House of Murdaugh spent years tracing Alex's behavior through original interviews and evidence that never made it to trial. The picture it paints isn't of a man who snapped. It's of a man who had been rehearsing. The book reveals that the night of the boat crash — years before the murders — Alex showed up at the hospital and immediately began trying to control the narrative. He tried to get into Morgan Doughty's room even after she told nurses to keep him out. He cornered Connor Cook and told him to keep his mouth shut. Morgan's first written statement that night said Connor was driving when the boat hit the bridge. That story was rewritten the next day. After the staged roadside shooting months after the murders, Alex sat with a sketch artist and helped produce a composite that resembled Anthony Cook — a boat crash survivor. He had a bullet wound in his head and was still framing people.Lasdun also uncovered a $5,000 backdated check to a police chief who was at the Moselle crime scene, connections to a business with drug-smuggling ties, and evidence the state agency investigating the case told conflicting stories about where key evidence was found.Part 1 of a three-part interview. Before the murders at Moselle, before the 911 call, before any of it — there was a pattern. And James Lasdun's new book The Family Man traces it through original interviews and evidence that never made it into the trial. The night of the boat crash that killed Mallory Beach, Alex Murdaugh was already running the playbook. He showed up at the hospital and started working the hallways — trying to get into rooms where passengers were being treated, cornering Connor Cook and telling him to keep quiet, attempting to reach Morgan Doughty even after she begged nurses to keep him away. A nurse told investigators she believed Alex was "trying to orchestrate something." This was years before the murders. The book reveals that Morgan's first written statement — given before Alex reached her — said Connor Cook was driving when the boat hit the bridge. That story changed the next day under circumstances that remain murky. Lasdun argues the accepted version of who caused Mallory's death may have been built after the fact. There are other findings that have never been publicly reported. A $5,000 check Alex wrote to a local police chief who was at the Moselle crime scene, backdated by months, with no credible explanation. A jellyfish business connected to associates with drug-smuggling histories. Evidence that SLED gave Alex's own brother two different stories about where a key piece of physical evidence was found. This is Part 1 of a three-part interview with author James Lasdun. The blueprint was always there. Nobody was looking at it.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? James Lasdun covered the Murdaugh case for The New Yorker — and his article became the magazine's most-read story of the year. Now his book The Family Man goes further than any previous reporting, with original interviews and evidence that reframe who Alex Murdaugh actually was. This isn't a man who lost control one night. The book traces a pattern of staging, manipulation, and control going back years. The night Mallory Beach was killed in the boat crash, Alex was already working hospital hallways, trying to get into survivors' rooms, telling people what to say. Morgan Doughty's first statement that night said Connor Cook was driving — a version that disappeared after a whispered conversation between survivors the next day. After the staged roadside shooting, Alex helped create a composite sketch of his supposed attacker that resembled one of the boat crash survivors. From a hospital bed. With a bullet wound. Still framing people. The book also reveals a $5,000 backdated check Alex wrote to a police chief who showed up at the Moselle crime scene, business connections tied to convicted drug launderers, and evidence that SLED gave Alex's own brother conflicting stories about where a key piece of physical evidence was found.Part 1 of our three-part interview goes deep on the patterns nobody was watching — the ones that tell you exactly who Alex Murdaugh was long before anyone was killed at Moselle.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? James Lasdun spent years investigating the Murdaugh case for The New Yorker and then for his new book The Family Man: Blood and Betrayal in the House of Murdaugh. What he found goes deeper than anything that came out at trial — and it starts long before the night at Moselle. The night of the boat crash that killed Mallory Beach, Alex was already in damage-control mode. While his injured son Paul was ranting at hospital staff, Alex was prowling the hallways trying to get into the rooms of every passenger on that boat. Morgan Doughty — Paul's girlfriend — specifically asked nurses to keep him out. She could hear him in the hallway, saying he needed to tell her what to say. A nurse told DNR officers she had the impression Alex was trying to "orchestrate something."Lasdun dug into the first statements given that night — before Alex got to anyone — and found that Morgan originally said Connor Cook was driving when the boat crashed. That version disappeared the next day.The book also surfaces details no one has reported. A check Alex wrote to a police chief at the crime scene, backdated and unexplained. Connections to a jellyfish business with ties to convicted drug launderers. Key evidence that SLED placed in two different locations when speaking to Alex's own brother. This is Part 1 of three. The pattern was always there. The book just shows you where to look.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? “Justice may have been served, but the human element of the story didn't seem to add up.” — James Lasdun In March 2023, Alex Murdaugh — wealthy scion of a South Carolina prosecutorial dynasty — was found guilty of murdering his wife Maggie and his son Paul at their family estate. With its opioid addiction, fatal boat crash, staged suicide, and a cousin called Eddie, the case could have been invented for our true crime age. And who better to tell the story of the mysterious Mr Murdaugh than the literary crime writer James Lasdun whose 2023 New Yorker piece about the trial became the magazine's most-read story of the year. Lasdun's new book, The Family Man: Blood and Betrayal in the House of Murdaugh, tries to answer the one question the trial never answered. Why would a father annihilate his son? The prosecution claimed that Alex killed Maggie and Paul to distract from a web of financial crimes about to be exposed. While this is theoretically possible, Lasdun acknowledges, it is totally implausible psychologically. Coming from a family of prosecutors, Murdaugh would have known he would be the prime suspect. And this family annihilator, as the prosecutor described him, murdered not just his wife, but his boy. Who would annihilate their beloved child to muddy a prosaic embezzlement? The Southern gothic case isn't over. The court clerk who managed the Murdaugh trial resigned in disgrace after it emerged she had interfered with the jury — fabricating a Facebook post to remove a juror who was bending toward acquittal. Murdaugh has appealed to the South Carolina Supreme Court. A retrial isn't inconceivable. But even if the murder conviction is overturned, Murdaugh faces forty years inside for his financial crimes. So he's never going free. But James Lasdun's core question remains unanswered. Why? “Justice may have been served,” Lasdun concludes, “but the human element of the story didn't seem to add up.” Mr Murdaugh remains a mystery, perhaps even to himself. Five Takeaways • The Family Annihilator: A Psychological Category: The term “family annihilator” — first used at the Murdaugh trial — is not a well-developed criminological category. There isn't much psychology behind it. What Lasdun found in his research: most family annihilators are men who kill their families when they believe everything is about to be taken from them — not out of hatred, but out of a grotesque form of ownership. The family is theirs. If their world is ending, the family ends with it. This pattern, Lasdun argues, begins to illuminate what happened at Moselle. Not excusing it. Illuminating it. • The Thirteen Minutes of Mystery: The murders took place in a thirteen-minute window at the kennel at Moselle. In thirteen minutes, Alex was supposed to have shot his wife with a shotgun and his son with a rifle, staged the scene, called 911, and composed himself sufficiently to appear on a video call immediately afterward showing no signs of distress. Lasdun's question: was he capable of that? The prosecution said yes, and the jury agreed. Lasdun is not saying they were wrong. He is saying that the how and why of those thirteen minutes remain genuinely mysterious — and that the mystery is part of what makes the case important. • Cousin Eddie and the Staged Shooting: Three months after the murders, Alex arranged a meeting on a rural road with his cousin Eddie — a distant relative — and emerged with an entry and exit wound at the back of his head. Alex claimed he had asked Eddie to shoot him dead so that his surviving son Buster could collect his $10 million life insurance. Eddie denies this account entirely. The police concluded quickly that the “shooter” was not a stranger seeking vengeance for the boat crash, as Alex had initially claimed. Lasdun's reading: Alex was trying to reinforce the vendetta narrative that would implicate Anthony and Connor Cook, the young men who had been on the boat when Mallory Beach was killed. • The Court Clerk and the Removed Juror: One juror was leaning toward acquittal in the final hours of deliberation. That juror was removed from the jury on the last day of the trial, after the clerk of court produced evidence that the juror had been indiscreet about the case on Facebook. It subsequently emerged that the clerk had fabricated the Facebook post. She resigned in disgrace. The Murdaugh appeal is partly based on this interference. The South Carolina Supreme Court has taken it seriously. A retrial is not inconceivable. The legal situation is still live. • Murdaugh as an American Story: Lasdun's book, like Capote's In Cold Blood, is not ultimately about a crime. It is about a society. The Murdaughs were prosecutors — the family that put people in prison, that sent people to death row. The corruption that enabled Alex's embezzlement was not unusual in Hampton County; it was systemic. The opioids that fuelled his addiction were everywhere. The insularity and entitlement of the Lowcountry ruling class created the conditions in which Alex Murdaugh could operate for twenty years without exposure. The murders are a symptom. The disease is American. About the Guest James Lasdun is a poet, novelist, memoirist, and staff writer at The New Yorker. The Batman was discussed as were these topics: Stephe's recent trip to Florida Thrifty Car Rental Cards Against Humanity Connor's pocasting career Adventures in the ER Moon Knight What's on Your Desk? MCU television Our Tee Public store Paul Hogan and Benny Hill Dusty Rhodes Baseball I honestly don't remember how we got to Paul Hogan. Enjoy.

The Murdaugh Murders, Money & Mystery | Unsolved South Carolina
This is the story of what happened leading up to a fatal 2019 boat crash that claimed the life of Mallory Beach, and introduced many across South Carolina to the Murdaugh family through then 19-year-old Paul Murdaugh. Paul was reportedly driving a group of friends around on his father's boat amid a night of underage drinking at parties and bars. The friends' night of fun begins to devolve into chaos as more alcohol is consumed and an infamous alter-ego appears, eventually ending in horror as the boat crashes into a bridge.Read more on the Murdaugh saga: https://abcnews4.com/murdaugh~~~~~~~~~~ Unsolved South Carolina is a production of ABC News 4 in Charleston, South Carolina. Please consider leaving a review and a 5-star rating if you enjoy the podcast. We also give a quick rundown on the case of missing girl Cleo Smith, who disappeared from her family's tent in Western Australia over the past weekend. For anyone who is not familiar with this one, definitely start with Part One. Alex Murdaugh and his wife Maggie lived an affluent life with their two sons Buster and Paul in South Carolina. They were/are basically South Carolina Royalty - their family has been high profile in the area for decades. A few years ago, things started going really wrong for them - their housekeeper died mysteriously and Paul (allegedly) caused a boat crash while drunk that killed 19 y/o Mallory Beach. And then in June this year, Alex found Paul and Maggie murdered at one of the many homes they owned. Police have now reopened other cold cases in the area, looking for connections to the Murdaugh's. And to top it off, Alex allegedly paid someone to shoot him in the head in a suicide-for-hire insurance plot. In this episode we discuss (this synopsis is very general as I don't want to spoil the story for anyone. : - The reopening of the Stephen Smith case- New information from Connor Cook about the boat crash that killed Mallory Beach – Connor was aboard the boat on the night of the accident- Alex's ‘suicide-for hire' plot – I can't even begin to describe the whole debacle here- Alex's resignation from his law firm and his entry into rehab- The ‘alleged' misappropriation of funds by Alex from PMPED- Updates on the lawsuits surrounding the boat crash- More info on the Gloria Satterfield death settlement and Alex's shady involvement in that case- And we finish up with Alex in jail! After a full year away, MLR is finally back. In preparation for Saturday's games, we busted out the TV screens, bought ingredients for (something resembling) chili in the crock pot, and invited the lads over as we dialed up "The Rugby Network" for what seemed a lot like an NFL Redzone Sunday, but better. Love how the MLR had multiple games running at a time. The staggered kick off times allowed for the non stop action to roll for 4+ hours. And could we have a better day of attack, and scoring? In the 5 games on Saturday, each team averaged just above 28 points. Who doesn't love scoring? RUNY 36 - SD Legion 29 The Butcher and his pack were clinical, scoring twice off the rolling maul. Game was played at a pop up stadium in what appeared to be one of the side fields of old Sam Boyd Stadium that used to host the Vegas 7's stop for many years. Give credit to sideline reporter Jillian Lopez (don't worry, she's blue check verified), who was asked to give sideline reports in a wind storm ... she said she could feel the on-field intensity of both teams, and even without a crowd, the game had some punch. San Diego had moments, and showed they can flip the field and score at will. They will be playing an uphill battle all season as they live away from home, in a sinful city with no sinning (I doubt players are hitting the strip w Covid protocols). Shout out to Matt McCarthy (the Rugby Media G.O.A.T.) who called the game (over the internet, I think). Doing play-by-play can't be easy through a live stream, but he certainly brought the energy like RUNY did to seal this win late. LA Giltinis 42 - NEFJ 27 Giltinis were clinical. Plain and simple. The tries AND cards kept coming all day in The Coliseum. John Poland received the first (experimental) red card when he accidentally kicked a Giltini in the face. Billy (William) Meakes was silky smooth all day, facilitating great lines from his aussie buddies. It was all smiles for the expansion team, and a track meet for their backline. Todd Clever stole the show, rocking the man bun and crushing the sideline reporting. Rugby ATL 21 - Toronto Arrows 14 Stifling defense on both sides. The dreaded duo of Chance Wenglewski and Connor Cook is menacing. They pilfered ball all day, and kept Toronto's attack in check. A late poach by Ross Deacon with his heels on the goal line was the difference. Arrows have a tough trip to Utah next week and need to bounce back. Utah Warriors 30 Austin Gilgronis 28 So the rugby world met "sports personality" Jim Knox (who looks like a Cuomo / Skip Bayless love child). Jim was sprinting around the stadium interviewing anyone and everyone. Guy just runs on another level, and I'm sure we won't see the last of this character. In the actual game, Utah played great. Lance Williams dotted in the corner on a great finish, Michael Baska snagged 7pts with a cheeky shoulder dip move to score under the posts, and twitch streamer SlimTucci was a thorn in the side of Austin in the 2nd half. Mack Mason had a chance to win it late, but the kick from 50+ meters came up short. Houston Sabercats 30 - Seattle Seawolves 24 Sabercats played some amazingly opportunistic rugby. Zack Pangelinan went the length of the field. Taylor Howden threw a frozen rope of a pass that connected with Matias Freyre who finished strong and got the rock over the line for a try. Props to Seattle for fighting, but it wasn't enough as the Cats defend the Cat Den and start the season hot. Old Glory 26 - NOLA Gold 26 Heartbreaking draw for both clubs (they probably both think they should have won), but this game may have been the chippiest all weekend. NOLA dominated territory and, but kept getting turned over near the try line. Some of the calls were 50/50 balls, but the home crown was giving it to the officials calling the game (the band playing 3 blind mice is all time). OG had some fantastic backline moves, and the Tusitala / Robertson pairing is filthy. What a weekend! PICKEM!
Rivalry games seem to bring out a different level of madness and that craziness finds a way to show up at the most unexpected times. That's exactly what happened on October 17, 2015. That might be a date that doesn’t mean much to college football fans on the surface, but to fans of Michigan and Michigan State it means a ton. The Spartans were undefeated and ranked 7th nationally facing off against the 12th-ranked Wolverines under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh. With Mike Hart’s “little brother” comment looming in the backdrop, Michigan State looked to continue its streak of success over its in-state rivalry. It wasn't the cleanest game and referees were heavily involved, but Michigan appeared on the verge of pulling off the upset when the unthinkable happened. All they needed to do was get a punt off with 10 seconds left and the victory would be in hand. Instead, a botched snap and catch turned into a turnover and Jaylen Watts-Jackson racing down the sideline for a touchdown as time expired. It's a game that will live on forever in the rivalry and won't be forgotten by college football fans. We went back to watch the entire game and there's plenty to talk about beyond that final play. Among the topics we discussed: MSU’s recent success under Dantonio Harbaugh-crazed Michigan fans The announcers: McDonough, Spielman, McShay A game heavy on replay reviews Punting was a running storyline Horrible targeting call A typical Big Ten mactchup w/ punts & fullbacks on display The Michigan fan reaction to the ending Steve Spurrier’s vacation Connor Cook’s notable career Jaylen Watts-Jackson a Spartan hero We talk all that and a lot more. You'd also be surprised at the amount of outdated items we actually found from just five years prior. If you want to watch the full game, check it out on our website here: https://distantreplaypodcast.com/ep-49-2015-cfb-7-michigan-state-at-12-michigan/ Until next week, check us out on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
With special guest Connor Cook, Anna and Derek discuss the iconic albeit "less is more" performance of Michael Keaton, the elephant in the room who goes by the name of Betelgeuse and much more in Tim Burton's horror comedy classic Beetlejuice (1988).

This New York City trio rounds out Lounge Acts' Bunbury trifecta hot off the May 25 release of their synthy smooth single “So I Met Someone.” “After a lot of dark, synth heavy disco-rock numbers, we wanted something with a different kind of energy,” VHS Collection told Billboard. “Our sound naturally evolves every few months, and we don't see any need to fight that.” Members James Bohannon, Connor Cook and Nils Vanderlip have released two EPs since forming VHS Collection in winter 2014 and are looking forward to dropping their debut LP later this summer. The group subscribes to a solitary confinement strategy of week-long bouts at a cabin in upstate New York to hash full songs out of the bits and pieces they’re constantly shooting back and forth digitally. “During these sessions, the three members collaborate on every element of the song, with each member playing various instruments on the tracks. The band then weeds out the best of these home produced tracks to bring into the studio,” the group’s biography reads. WCPO's Emmalee Smith caught up with VHS Collection after their performance at Bunbury to discuss their songwriting, breakups, and their favorite dumplings.
Scott Bair, CSN Bay Area, joins hosts Kordell Stewart and Brian Webber to discuss Marshawn Lynch coming out of retirement to play for the Raiders, signing QB EJ Manuel to compete with Connor Cook for the backup job and addressing defensive needs in the draft.

TALKING NFL PLAYOFFS COACHING CHANGES AND WEEK 17 NOTES CFB PLAYOFF AND NEW YEAR'S DAY BOWL GAMES NHL CENTENNIAL GAME UCONN WOMEN WIN NCAA WOMEN'S RECORD 31st CONSECUTIVE ROAD GAME
We start off with an Olympic update, starting with Michael Phelps. Is he the greatest Olympian? Greatest athlete of all time? How do the gold medals measure up to American titles and individual achievements? Is part of the reason it's not talked about because Americans don't take the Olympics seriously? How about the fact that he wins at every stroke? Will Phelps, despite his claims, swim in Tokyo? Speaking of dominance, will Katie Ledecky follow after Phelps? Really the United States could have sent out the gymnastics and swimming teams and done pretty well in the medal count. How do you measure the dominance of the U. S. gymnastics team and Simone Biles? Finally we get to trash, I mean, talk Purdue who finally replaced Morgan Burke. Mike Bobinski takes over the mess of Purdue football and he has actual experience, already a positive, but what has he actually done? How do you feel about the hiring of what seems like a pretty inexperienced guy? Something that is flying under the radar is that Purdue, who is supposed to be a self-sufficient sports program, is 12 million dollars short even with the Big Ten Network money! We continue our college football previews with the Big Ten, starting with the awful Purdue football team. When it comes to the start of a Boilermaker season under Darrell Hazell you gotta ask, gonna see another QB switch? What do we make of the roster? Pops is putting the over/under at 2 and 1/2 games, can the Boilers win more? We start in the West, which is the weaker half. Who are we taking and who's schedule is favorable? In the East there's some questions with Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State. Which team are you taking? J. T. Barrett comes back and brings a lot of experience, but the Buckeyes lost a lot of talent to the draft. Michigan State got to the playoffs but graduated Connor Cook, can they continue to build on what they've accomplished? Tyler is feeling Michigan, Pops is annoyed how overblown the Maize and Blue is. We continue our NFL previews out West this week. Denver lost a lot of talent in free agency and Kansas City was in the playoffs last year, does the division bunch up? Will we see two or three QBs for the Broncos? Kansas City didn't really make any roster shake ups, can they close the gap? The Raiders opened some eyes last year and it seems like everyone is giving them credit, can they surprise this season? Will Khalil Mack break the single season sack record? The Chargers have talent but seem much, much older and never deliver. Not to mention, the San Diego front office is starting to develop a reputation as jerks that screw over players. Which fantasy running back do you trust most? Will the top of the NFC West be close, or will Arizona stay in front? Which Seattle team will we get this year? Can Palmer and the Cardinals stay healthy and productive? The Rams moved to LA, draft Jared Goff and have Todd Gurley, but will the lack of the offensive production limit him? The biggest commentary for the 49ers is that fact that Blaine Gabbert could be the starter. Is there anyone in San Francisco or Los Angeles, besides Gurley, that you'd draft for your fantasy team?
If you haven't noticed, I have/had a lot of bosses in this life. In episode 23 of the podcast, we were joined by Eric Galko, the Owner of and Scouting Director at Optimum Scouting. As so many aspire to do, Eric grew a team of writers into a full-blown scouting service that provides an asset to several pro teams and All-Star game companies. The Optimum Scouting model provides a great template for aspiring members at multiple layers of the football industry. Whether you desire a scouting, writing or business position, you will gain a wealth of insight from Galko's appearance. Highlights from this episode include: ?- How a background in finance and law influenced Eric to take more interest in the business side of football. - Why Eric enjoys some of the "off internet" portions of the job, including working with agents and thinking from a team perspective. - The importance of character in the evaluation process, but why it is complicated and his experience with Connor Cook's parents this season. - Eric notes that scouts are paying attention to interviews, why they are becoming important for Optimum Scouting and story on talking to Braxton Miller this draft season. - Taking an interest in not only the players we cover as human beings, but also why Eric loves helping grow the following of lesser known analysts on Twitter by hiring them at Optimum Scouting.
