What does it truly mean to make an impact? A women's basketball coach at Texas A&M offered a simple but powerful distinction: success is what happens to you, while impact is what happens because of you. Numbers 8, set against the backdrop of the Israelites preparing to journey through the wilderness, gives us four clear attributes of a person who makes a lasting difference. God was literally at the center of the Israelite camp, and that arrangement was intentional. When He is at the center of our lives, everything else finds its proper place.The four attributes are ears that hear the Lord, hands that build a team, a heart that loves the presence of God, and a soul that shines while dented. Hearing God means opening His Word with genuine expectancy, not just asking Him to bless our existing plans but actually listening for His. Building a team means delegating real trust and responsibility to others, whether in ministry, marriage, or family life. Loving His presence means creating space to actually be with God, not just attending church or reading a verse occasionally, but slowing down enough to connect deeply. And shining while dented means allowing the painful, hammered seasons of life to shape us into purposeful instruments rather than broken ones.Jesus modeled all four of these attributes perfectly. He listened constantly to His Father, built a team of disciples, withdrew regularly to pray, and shined most brilliantly while suffering on the cross. Because of it, He became the most impactful person who ever walked the earth. Impact is not reserved for pastors or missionaries or people with large platforms. It belongs to anyone willing to live with ears open, hands extended, a heart pursuing His presence, and a soul that keeps shining even when life has left its marks.

 In a world filled with competing voices, everyone is asking for our agreement. In Episode 229, we explore Luke 12:41-48 and Jesus' parable of the faithful and unfaithful servants. Peter asks a great question that opens the door to one of Jesus' most personal and searching teachings: "Lord, is that illustration just for us or for everyone?" And Jesus answers with a parable that makes it personal for every single one of us—regardless of our role, our position, or our level of spiritual maturity. Through guided meditation, discover the two servants Jesus describes. Both have been given responsibility. Both know what the master wants. But they respond in completely opposite ways when the master is away. The first servant is faithful and sensible. He does his job. He feeds the other servants. He manages well. He doesn't need the master's presence to motivate his faithfulness—he simply does what he was called to do, day after day, in the ordinary and unseen moments. And when the master returns—whenever that is—he's found doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing. The reward is staggering: the master puts him in charge of everything he owns. The second servant makes a dangerous assumption that changes everything: "My master won't be back for a while." And that single assumption—that the master's return is distant and therefore his accountability is suspended—leads to complete moral collapse. He starts abusing his position. He mistreats the other servants. He parties. He loses himself in comfort and self-indulgence. And when the master returns—unexpectedly, as masters always do—he's found doing exactly the opposite of what he was supposed to be doing. The contrast is stark and the principle is unmistakable: faithfulness is not about what you do when the master is watching. It's about what you do when you think he isn't. This episode explores what this means for your life. Jesus then delivers the line that should make every one of us pause and examine ourselves: "When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required." We have been given much. We have the complete Scriptures. We have the Holy Spirit living inside us. We have access to Jesus through prayer, through community, through two thousand years of His faithfulness recorded and available to us. We have been entrusted with relationships, with influence, with resources, with spiritual gifts, with callings. And with all of that comes responsibility. Not to perform for approval or to earn the master's favor—but to be faithful with what we've been entrusted, whether or not anyone is watching. Learn how to identify the specific responsibility God has entrusted to you that you've been neglecting—the relationship you've been ignoring, the spiritual discipline you've let slide, the calling you've been putting off, the stewardship you've been managing poorly—because no one has been holding you accountable. In Episode 227, we explore Luke 12:32-34 and one of the most tender and liberating passages in all of Jesus' teaching. Jesus opens not with a command or a warning but with a word of profound tenderness: "Don't be afraid, little flock." Little flock. It's an image of intimacy—a shepherd who knows his sheep, who sees their smallness and their vulnerability, who speaks to them with care rather than contempt. And then He says something that should stop every anxious, clinging heart completely: "It gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom." Through guided meditation, discover the profound implication of those words. Not reluctance. Not obligation. Not a begrudging transfer of resources. Great happiness. The Father delights in giving. He is not withholding. He is not waiting for you to earn it or deserve it or prove yourself worthy. He is eager—joyfully, generously, abundantly eager—to give you everything that belongs to His Kingdom. So if that's true—if the Father is that generous, that eager, that happy to give—then why are we clinging so tightly to what we have? That's the question underneath Jesus' next instruction: "Sell your possessions and give to those in need." This isn't a command to poverty or an instruction to be financially irresponsible. It's a command to freedom. Jesus is saying: loosen your grip. Stop clinging to earthly treasure as if it's what keeps you safe. Because it isn't. Purses wear out. Thieves break in. Moths destroy. Everything you've accumulated here is temporary—subject to loss, decay, theft, and ultimately death. But treasure stored in heaven? That's permanent. Eternal. Untouchable. No thief can steal it. No moth can destroy it. No economic collapse can touch it. No death can take it away. This episode explores the most revealing line in the entire passage: "Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be." Your heart follows your treasure—not the other way around. You don't give because your heart is already generous. You give, and your heart becomes generous. You invest in the Kingdom, and your heart starts to care about Kingdom things. You store treasure in heaven, and your desires begin to align with what is eternal. This means that generosity is not just an act of obedience—it's a spiritual discipline that reshapes your heart. Every act of giving is an act of heart formation. The Disciple & Forgiveness continues our Follow Me: The Meaning & Blessings of Discipleship series with one of the most difficult parts of following Jesus: forgiving others. In Matthew 6:9–15, Jesus makes clear that forgiveness is not optional for His disciples. But what does forgiveness actually mean? This message explores forgiveness as releasing anger and resentment while also clarifying what forgiveness is not. It doesn't mean excusing the wrong, forgetting what happened, automatically reconciling, or restoring trust. Forgiveness can be difficult, complicated, and often a process, but it remains an essential part of becoming more like Jesus.

Disciples of Jesus living in the righteousness of Jesus should expect persecution for that righteousness coupled with God's blessing in their suffering.

Jesus continues His teaching on worry and provision with a simple but profound instruction: "Look at the lilies and how they grow." He doesn't say think about the lilies or learn from the lilies. He says look. Stop. Actually look at them. Because there's something in the looking—in the slowing down and truly seeing—that rushing right past will never give you. Through guided meditation, discover what the lilies reveal. They don't work. They don't spin. They don't strategize about their appearance or anxiously plan for their future. They simply grow—and in their growing, they become more beautiful than anything Solomon could manufacture with all his wealth and wisdom. Before you lie awake at three in the morning running through all the ways things could go wrong. Before you've even identified the need yourself. He already knows. This episode explores the profound implication of that truth. If your Father already knows your needs, then the anxious pursuit of provision is not only unnecessary—it's a misuse of your energy. Jesus says this kind of anxious seeking is what unbelievers do—people who have no Father, no promise, no relationship with the One who holds everything. But you have a Father who already knows. So your energy can go somewhere else entirely. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else. This episode unpacks what that actually looks like in practice. It looks like asking every morning: "What is God doing today—and how can I be part of it?" It looks like orienting your decisions around His purposes rather than your fears. It looks like pursuing His righteousness, His justice, His love—trusting that as you do, He will take care of everything you need. The lilies don't seek their own provision. They seek the sun. And in seeking the sun, they receive everything they need to become what they were made to be. Three daughters in the car, ranging in age from seven to twelve, navigating a conversation about Moses, the book of Acts, and the Lord's Prayer — and then, just as the theology is getting genuinely rich, the seven-year-old pipes up with the most pressing question on her mind: "But Mom, what are we going to have for supper?" It is the kind of moment that makes a parent both laugh and wonder: is any of this actually getting through? Discipling children and the next generation rarely looks like a carefully curated, Pinterest-worthy moment. It looks like car rides and half-finished conversations and questions that reveal both curiosity and distraction in equal measure. And yet Isaiah 55:11 holds a promise that steadies every parent, teacher, mentor, and youth leader who has ever wondered whether the seeds they are planting are making any difference: God's Word will not return empty. It will accomplish what He desires and achieve the purpose for which He sent it. The impact of sharing Scripture, praying with and over children, and talking openly about faith is never determined by how much they appear to absorb in the moment. God is always at work, on His timetable and according to His plan, using our faithful obedience to shape the next generation. What a privilege it is, like Isaiah, to co-labor with Him in that work — car conversations and supper questions and all. Today's Bible Verse "So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."— Isaiah 55:11, NIV Ponder Today God's Word never returns empty, even when it appears to go unabsorbed. What looks like a distracted seven-year-old or a disengaged teenager does not limit what God can do with the truth that has been spoken over them. He is always at work. Discipleship happens in ordinary moments, not just intentional ones. Car rides, meal times, bedtime routines — these are the spaces where faith is most naturally and powerfully passed from one generation to the next. We are invited to co-labor with God in shaping the next generation. That is not a burden — it is a profound privilege. We plant and water, and God brings the growth, in His timing and according to His purposes. Age is not a barrier to engaging children with the deep things of faith. A seven-year-old asking about the Trinity and a twelve-year-old learning to share the gospel are both evidence that children are far more capable of meaningful spiritual engagement than we often assume. Trust God's timetable, not your own measurement of impact. The conversations that seem to go nowhere, the questions that land with a thud, the seeds that show no visible growth — God is using all of it. Romans 8:28 assures us He is working it all for good. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Help me to abide in it daily so that I will be prepared to share with others, especially the next generation. I ask that Your truth will penetrate the hearts and minds of those who hear it, bringing conviction and a desire to know You. Give me the knowledge and encouragement to keep talking with the children in my life about You, their faith, and the Scriptures, even when I wonder whether they are comprehending or even listening. What does Scripture actually mean when it commands us to “disciple the nations”? Is the Great Commission simply about converting individuals—or can nations themselves truly become Christian? In this episode of The Magistrate, James Baird is joined by George Sayour, filling in for Josh Howard, to examine what the Bible teaches about nations, national identity, and the reign of Christ.James and George explore the biblical meaning of ethnos, the relationship between individuals and nations, and whether Scripture gives us categories for speaking about a genuinely Christian nation. Matthew 13:52, “Every teacher of religious law who becomes a disciple in the Kingdom of Heaven is like a homeowner who brings from his storeroom new gems of truth as well as old.” Well what on earth is Jesus trying to show us here? Being a teacher of religious law means you know your Bible. You know facts. You know history. You know verses. You know order. But there’s more than just knowledge of the Bible for us – we are invited to become DISCIPLES. As a disciple of Jesus, we are his STUDENTS. Do you see the interesting dynamic Jesus is introducing here – for those who call themselves teachers, those who know all there is to know about the Bible, we can then go even deeper by being a student of Jesus. We can learn from him. Jesus wants to take us beyond the written word, he wants to reveal to us the things of Heaven. Have you ever studied scripture and simply gotten nothing out of it? My friend, you could have the entire Bible memorized from cover to cover, which many ‘teachers of religious law’ did in these days, but fail to be a discipled as a student of Jesus. You could know everything there is to know about God’s word, but only have knowledge without meaning. God hasn’t called you to gather up more and more knowledge so you’re the most intelligent person with massive amounts of information. He’s called you to be a student of Jesus, learning spiritual ways beyond the words. Jesus calls us into relationship with him. In close relationship we can see how Jesus works. He says in Matthew 11: 29-30 MSG, “Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” You can’t learn that from reading. You could study for the rest of your life and never learn the unforced rhythms of grace. These are the things you will only learn in close relationship with Jesus as his disciple. Are you ready to really be a student of Jesus? Okay, then KEEP COMPANY with him. What would that really look like? Keeping company with Jesus means you invite Jesus to be with you in your everyday life. It’s beginning to live in a continual awareness that he is there. Wow, to think that Jesus is personally interested in YOU and every detail of your life. There’ a line in a song I love that says, “Never thought to stop and wonder – You made a million colors – And now you’re thinking about me.” Let that settle in for a moment. God had the capacity and creativity to make a million different colors in every different tone and shade, and now that same God is thinking about YOU!!!!! What???!!!!!! That must mean you’re special. That must mean he sees you as worthy. That must mean your life is for a purpose. And when you live with that awareness, life begins to take on a different color. Nothing is an accident. All things are truly working together for good in the hands of the God who is wild about you! And now, this great big, huge, all-knowing, all-powerful God has invited you to personally be his student and keep company with him?!!!!!!!!!!!!! As you’re walking through your every day, ordinary life, recognizing Jesus is actually with you – you will begin to open yourself up to what he is trying to teach you. THAT IS DISCIPLESHIP. This is how you will learn the unforced rhythms of grace. This is how you will learn to live freely and lightly. And this will change your life completely! These are the things you don’t get from just reading. This isn’t a class you can go to. This is one-on-one life training with the one who created life. Jesus teaching you. When Jesus says, “Walk with me, work with me – Watch how I do it”, he’s not asking you to take a class. He’s inviting you to be his apprentice. This is an apprenticeship. You watch the expert! Watch how Jesus handled hardship. Watch how he handled criticism. Watch how he responded when he was tired. Watch how he spent time with the Father praying. What how he dealt with interruptions. Watch how he LOVED. Watch how he forgave. Watch how he handled power. Watch how he trusted God. YOU LEARN BY WATCHING JESUS. Then, you start doing what you see him do. Today, this day of your real life, it is a classroom. Jesus is teaching you something here. Something beyond the typed words in your Bible. Something beyond the same stories you will read. Something personally designed for you to see Jesus working so you can learn to do the same. Today, you will learn patience. Today you will learn trust. Today you will learn surrender. Today you will learn peace. Today, your life is filled with opportunities to be disciplined by Jesus. YOU DON’T ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING! Jesus has so much more he wants to teach you. Now, back to this parable. In the story, Jesus says the disciple (the student who is constantly learning) is like a homeowner who brings things out of his storeroom. Okay – you can’t bring out what you haven’t put in. Every time you spend time with Jesus, you’re putting something in the storeroom. This is how scripture comes alive. This is how lessons grow deep. This is when you see God’s answer to prayers. This is personally experiencing the faithfulness of God. THIS IS THE STOREHOUSE. You’ve been storing up all this goodness so you can bring it back out at any time. Old things and new things. Old promises and brand new revelations of how Jesus is working personally in your life. Old stories of how they’re unfolding in awesome new ways in this season. Isn’t it incredible how you can read the same verses and same stories in your Bible in a different season of life and find a whole new meaning? Yip – that’s what happens in the storehouse. As a student of Jesus you’re adding more and more and it just keeps growing and becoming more. Maybe the goal of your Christian life isn’t to become someone who knows the most about God. Maybe it’s to become someone who knows God so well that His ways become your ways. That’s why Jesus doesn’t simply invite you to read about Him. He says: “Come. Follow Me.” Walk with Me. Work with Me. Watch Me. Learn from Me. Keep company with Me. And eventually, without even realizing it, you’ll start responding like Him. You’ll start loving like Him. You’ll start forgiving like Him. You’ll start seeing people like Him. You’ll start trusting like Him. You’ll start living like Him. And that’s when the storeroom starts filling up. Not just with facts about Jesus. But with experiences of Jesus. Not just verses you’ve memorized. But truth you’ve lived. Not just knowledge in your head. But Jesus shaping your heart. And then, when life gets hard—or when someone else needs what you’ve learned—you can walk into your storeroom and say: “Oh, I’ve got something for this.” Because you’ve been keeping company with Jesus.
