In today's hybrid and digital workplaces, the instinct for many busy managers is to rely on quick tech tools like AI or generic emails to communicate care. Henna Pryor argues this approach is actually backfiring. She challenges leaders to recognize that we are living in an "age of doubt" where skepticism is the default posture, urging them to close their "signal gaps" by aligning what they say with how they actually show up. Joe Mull sits down with Henna for a conversation about workplace trust and leadership skills. As a workplace performance expert, speaker, and author of Good Awkward and the upcoming book The Signal Gap, Henna brings a wide-ranging career background. From surviving the grueling hours of Big Four public accounting to spending fourteen years in executive search, she uses her front-row seat to team dynamics to help leaders build trust at work and become more believable and impactful. Henna breaks down the difference between cheap and costly signals, explaining why simply expressing gratitude is no longer enough to make employees feel valued. She shares stories from her own career (including her first job at a diner and the sting of being ignored as a high-achieving employee) to illustrate the importance of leadership communication. She also warns against "intent smuggling" and the dangers of public microclaims in the digital age. In this episode, you'll learn:

The conversation dives deep into why many professionals feel like "drunk baby giraffes" navigating constant change and how "social muscle atrophy" is impacting team dynamics in a hybrid world. Henna shares why embracing awkwardness is a professional advantage and offers actionable strategies to rebuild social courage and connection. Key Takeaways: - Social Muscle as Currency: Your ability to navigate social discomfort is a hidden performance currency in today's workplace. - The "Atrophy" Epidemic: Remote and hybrid work have caused our social skills to weaken due to a lack of real-world practice and a tendency to avoid difficult conversations. - Awkwardness is an Emotion, Not a Trait: Awkwardness is a unique form of social discomfort triggered by uncertainty and change, rather than a permanent personality flaw. - The "Drunk Baby Giraffe" Mindset: Leaders must model being okay with "stumbling" through change to encourage their teams to take risks and keep moving forward. - Focus on the Start: The hardest part of social interaction is the "activation energy" required to begin; focusing on simply starting can overcome most social anxiety. This intentional design allows him to handle morning routines, take his daughter to activities, prepare dinner, and put her to bed – creating a consistent presence that transcends mere physical attendance.Perhaps most valuable is Dave's insight that joy must originate from within rather than external achievements or validation. This philosophy shapes how he parents his daughter, encouraging her to develop self-worth independent of outside approval. His practical approach includes an annual New Year's reflection with his wife to reassess priorities and intentionally plan the coming year around their family values.Whether you're struggling with work-life balance, parenting a sensitive child, or simply seeking to create more meaningful family connections, Dave's thoughtful approach offers both inspiration and practical strategies. As he puts it: "What gets planned happens" – a simple yet profound reminder that intentional family life requires more than good intentions. You can learn more about Dave and his work at http://www.wilsonhall.co/Support the showPlease don't forget to leave us a review wherever you consume your podcasts! Send us a textThank you, Henna Pryor for making today's episode possible!!!Greg Offner lived a compartmentalized life—corporate sales professional by day, piano bar performer by night. Though successful in both worlds, he felt disconnected from his authentic self, keeping different aspects of his personality in separate "buckets." Then disaster struck: a severe vocal cord injury threatened everything, leaving one vocal cord paralyzed after years of overuse, smoking, and untreated acid reflux.Greg poured his experience in music, business, and behavioral psychology into a framework for creating emotionally resonant, high-impact workplace experiences. The result became a keynote—and a book—focused on transforming disengaged workplaces into cultures where people thrive.Today, Greg helps organizations around the globe design Encore Experiences™—workplace moments so meaningful, people can't wait to come back and do it again.Through fifteen surgical procedures and periods of complete silence (communicating only through a whiteboard while healing), Greg spiraled into depression. The turning point came unexpectedly at a Tony Robbins event when a stranger named Svetlana observed: "You're trying to keep all these different parts of your life in buckets... But what if you didn't have those buckets? What if it was all brought together in one thing and that was you?" Pointing to the stage where Tony was speaking, she said, "I think you'd be doing something like that"—a lightning bolt moment that changed everything.Today, as a keynote speaker and father to two young daughters (Frankie, 4, and Trixie, 2), Greg brings his whole self to every aspect of life. He shares profound insights about balancing his driven personality with the unpredictability of parenting: "Replace expectations with hopes. Instead of mapping out my day, maybe replace it with 'wouldn't it be nice if...'" This shift creates space for grace when things don't go as planned.Drawing from his musical background, Greg teaches his daughters to "play your instrument in a way that elevates the performance of the players around you"—a philosophy that extends beyond music to life itself. His remarkable journey reminds us that sometimes our greatest setbacks lead to our most authentic path forward, especially when we stop compartmentalizing and bring all parts of ourselves together. Please don't forget to leave us a review wherever you consume your podcasts! Ever felt awkward in a meeting, on stage, or in a tough conversation? What if that discomfort wasn't a weakness—but an advantage? In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Peter sits down with workplace performance expert Henna Pryor, author of Good Awkward, to explore the hidden power of social discomfort. Henna breaks down why avoiding awkward moments only makes them worse—and how embracing them can lead to stronger communication, better leadership, and a more resilient mindset. They discuss why so many leaders fear saying the wrong thing (especially in today's hyper-visible world), how the "spotlight effect" distorts our self-perception, and why placing small bets is the key to building a thought leadership platform. Henna also shares her journey from finance to executive coaching to keynote speaking—proving that growth often comes from stepping into discomfort. This conversation will change the way you think about awkwardness—and might just help you unlock your next big leadership breakthrough. Three Key Takeaways: • Avoiding Awkwardness Makes It Worse – Awkward moments happen to everyone, but dodging them only amplifies the discomfort. Acknowledging and embracing these moments can make you appear more confident and authentic. • Small Bets Lead to Big Wins – Instead of making massive, risky moves, successful thought leaders test ideas by placing small bets—through LinkedIn posts, speaking engagements, or content experiments—to see what resonates before doubling down. • Your Perceived Failures Matter Less Than You Think – The "spotlight effect" tricks us into believing people notice our mistakes more than they actually do. In reality, most people quickly move on—so stop overanalyzing and keep moving forward. Awkward moments often come from misspeaking or making mistakes. Just as Henna Pryor suggests addressing the awkward head-on, Priya Nalkur encourages leaders to embrace imperfection. Both perspectives highlight the power of authenticity and resilience in leadership. Most people avoid awkwardness like the plague. Our conversation with Henna Pryor explores what it means to embrace awkwardness to give yourself an advantage when you connect with your audience. During this recap conversation, we discuss what it might mean to embrace awkwardness and turn it into an advantage and how both AJ and Rory have done so as they have built Brand Builders. Tune in to hear two examples of embarrassing experiences that became opportunities to be relatable and establish a sense of comfort and ease. Listen in to hear all this and more today!
Awkwardness is part of life. But not many of us know how to navigate it, let alone leverage it for success. During this episode, Henna Pryor joins us to discuss the superpower of embracing awkwardness. Among her many accolades, she is an award-winning TEDx speaker, sought-after workplace expert, and international keynote speaker. Tuning in, you'll hear all about Henna's experiences of growing up and feeling awkward, entering the staffing industry, and finding her calling in speaking. Learn how she has honed her skills as a powerful public speaker, how she went about testing for and establishing an audience for her book, and what her life as a speaker looks like in a day-to-day sense. Henna shares her perspective on our weakening social musculature and offers a definition for awkwardness and ‘good awkwardness'. We discuss using embarrassment to create loyalty, why you should never cater to your audience, and what it looks like to prioritize your response to this inevitable experience. Thanks for tuning in!
Bravery requires being off balance. You will only find the courage to “cross the cringe chasm” by remembering that the risk of losing your identity is greater than the risk of losing approval. As today's guest Henna Pryor writes in her wonderful debut book, Good Awkward: “The idea of releasing this book into the world without knowing how you'll receive it makes me cringe. But it makes me cringe even more to imagine walking through life as a person who doesn't write and release the book that matters so much to her because she's worried how it will land. Either one is a risk.” The Approval Paradox that we all confront is that we are social, communal creatures; for most of us, what other people think of us does matter. And yet, we can't allow others' approval to outweigh whether we personally improve. Cheers to the real reel, and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! It is conventional wisdom for people taking a test that if you are stuck – go with your first answer. Listen as I begin this episode by explaining why that is such terrible advice Source: Joseph T. Hallinan author of Why We Make Mistakes (https://amzn.to/44PV4SQ) We have all felt awkward and embarrassed at times. It feels terrible. Still, it happens to everyone and so often it isn't as big deal a deal as YOU think it is and maybe it isn't a big deal at all. That's the message from Henna Pryor. She has researched what that feeling of embarrassment is really all about and I think you will find what she has to say to be very liberating. Henna is a keynote speaker with two great TEDx talks (https://www.ted.com/talks/henna_pryor_why_awkwardness_is_your_secret_weapon_for_risk_taking_at_work) and she is author of the book, Good Awkward: How to Embrace the Embarrassing and Celebrate the Cringe to Become The Bravest You (https://amzn.to/45Ksgwh) Most plants come from seeds. And I bet you don't really understand how that really works. And how it works is truly amazing, as you will discover from listening to my guest Jennifer Jewell. She is a gardening educator and advocate and hosts a podcast called Cultivating Place (https://www.cultivatingplace.com/blog-1). She is also author of the book What We Sow (https://amzn.to/3EKxv3f).
