Episode #69 - "Do They Know It's Christmas?"... It's Christmas and Joseph and Mike are putting on a show! But first they run down some of their favorite Christmas movies and songs. Then it's time for Joe to answer the Monthly Mix-Tape Challenge before the lights go down and the curtain comes up as the Uphill Both Ways Players present their version of "A Christmas Carol". Of course there are the usual diversions like when Mike explains why Die Hard is a Christmas movie and It's a Wonderful Life isn't, when Joe talks about the weather in South Korea, and a very brief word or two about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. There's no coal in this stocking!

When we did our Rock-and-Roll Christmas "rabbit hole" episode last year we realized that there are just too many Rocking Christmas songs to be held in a single podcast. So we're coming back to you this year with another selection of Christmas songs that rock!“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by- Ronnie James Dio This selection from the former Rainbow and Black Sabbath front man puts a metal twist on a 16th century carol.“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by The Barenaked Ladies A more mellow take on the same song features stripped down acoustics and harmonies. Sarah McLachlan is featured in this cover.“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by John Lennon Brian features the well-known original piece from John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1971. They are joined by the Harlem Community Choir“Christmas” by The Who, from “Tommy”Rob brings us a deep cut from the rock opera Tommy. In this vignette, Tommy's father questions how Tommy can be saved given his inability to see, hear, or speak.“Do They Know It's Christmas?” by  Band Aid This 1984 compilation was created as a means of providing support to famine victims in Ethiopia. Bob Geldof and an all-star cast of singers was assembled including Sting, Bono, Bananarama, Boy George, and Simon Le Bon.“Stone Soul Christmas” by Binky Griptite Wayne puts the soul in Christmas with this 2011 effort. Binky Griptite is a DJ in New York and was the guitarist for the Dap-Kings.“Christmas Presents Blues” by Jimmy Reed Wayne keeps the funk going with this rousing bass line and double entendre laden tune from 1971.“I'm Your Santa” by Lil' Ed and the Imperials We drift into the blues with this New Orleans-style cut from Alligator Records.“Celebrate Me Home” by Kenny Loggins Bruce features one from Loggins' debut solo album in 1977. While this has now become a Christmas standard, it was not released as a single at the time, and was not intended to become a standard.“Baby It's Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser Brian's pick is the Dean Martin 1959 cover of this classic. Loesser originally wrote this as a housewarming song. When MGM bought the song, Frank's wife was furious that he had sold it.“All I Want for Christmas Is You”  by Mariah Carey Bruce took a little heat from the boys when he brings us this original piece from 1994 that has become a best-selling modern day Christmas song. Its Carey's biggest international hit, and the best selling Christmas single by a female artist overall.“Oh Tannenbaum” by Vince Guaraldi Christmas wouldn't be the same without “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” This piano jazz cover of the classic Christmas carol takes you to that show, and a rather dinky tree.“Come Home for Christmas” by the Eagles This 1978 cover is the first Eagles song to feature Timothy B. Schmit on bass after Randy Meisner left. The original version was released in 1960 by pianist Charles Brown.“Same Auld Lang Syne” by Dan FogelbergBrian features an autobiographical story from Fogelberg. This happened when he was returning home to Peoria when Jill went out for Egg Nog and Dan went out for whipping cream. Fogelberg did not reveal the name of he old flame, but she came forward after his death.LAUGH TRACK:“Walking Round in Women's Underwear” by Bob Rivers Wayne brings us into our "Laugh Track" part of the podcast with this comical take on Christmas and cross-dressing.“Hanukkah Song” by Adam SandlerWe finish off with this comical take on the Jewish holiday from Adam Sandler, where we find out that David Lee Roth, Henry Winkler, William Shattner, and Leonard Nimoy are all jewish. This season, we're looking at some popular Christmas movies and drawing out key themes to look at through the lens of faith, Christianity and Jesus. The movies we're looking at either are or have been engrained into culture and dramatically influence our Christmas traditions. We believe that we can find Jesus in everything because Jesus is truth. Every good story that we come to love and cherish has key themes that remind us and call us back to the greater narrative of God and His story of redemption and restoration. In this episode, we look at the 1989 movie, Christmas Vacation starring Chevy Chase. In this episode, we explore themes of What Makes Christmas and expectations during Christmas time. We also listen to and discuss the Christmas song, Do They Know It's Christmas by Band Aid in 1984. In 1987, she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and has been nominated for three Grammy awards. In 2008, she was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from Billboard magazine, and was also prominently featured in the historic black issue of Vogue Italia in 2008. Her early music influences are Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, The Carpenters, Roberta Flack, Prince, Grace Jones and various jazz artists including Nancy Wilson.  In December 2016 Billboard ranked her as the 21st most successful dance artist of all-time. and in 2017 Black Music Honors TV special recognized Watley as Crossover Music Icon Honoree for her groundbreaking achievements and influence. In August 2018 Billboard ranked Jody Watley as one of the top female artists of all-time, at number 53. Jody's Early career1977–1984: Soul Train and ShalamarWatley was born in Chicago, Illinois and made her first stage appearance at 8 years old with family friend and godfather Jackie Wilson. (CLIP JACKIE WILSON) She got her entertainment start on the TV dance show Soul Train at the age of 14. Documented by Ebony magazine in 1977 as a part of "The New Generation," Jody Watley was one of the most popular dancers on the show and recognized as a trendsetter for her style and dance moves. As standouts on the television show, Watley and fellow Soul Train dancer Jeffrey Daniel were selected to join Gary Mumford and become original members of the R&B group Shalamar, which was created by soul trains Don Cornelius. (Mumford was shortly replaced by Gerald Brown, and Brown himself was soon replaced by Howard Hewett as lead vocalist).  So The lineup now in shalamar of Hewett, Watley, and Daniel would be the most successful. Jody Watley remained with Shalamar from 1977 to 1983. In that time, The trio released several albums and scored several hits including the US Top 20 "Dead Giveaway", and the R&B hits "The Second Time Around", "For The Lover In You", and "A Night To Remember". A show exclusively for Shalamar up in a few weeks so I didn't mean to tease you their wit den jammies but few weeks we'll hook up with shalamars music..  after all of this and Because of conflicts within the group, disagreements about the artistic direction of Shalamar with Dick Griffey, and lack of payment from Solar Records, Jody Watley finally leaves the group in 1983, prior to the release of Shalamars "The Look" album. Here we are in post Shalamar mode for Jody watley as she moved to England, and while there, she recorded a guest vocal with British Jamaican roots reggae group Musical Youth for their album, Different Style!.(clip) remember them,  She also recorded with Gary Langan, Anne Dudley and J.J Jeczalik (who later became Art of Noise).(clip)  She had a brief stint with Phonogram Records where two singles were released (in the UK, Europe and Australia – though crucially not America) under the moniker "Jody" (no second name), "Where the Boys Are" and "Girls Night Out". Also during this era, and after departing the group, she took part in Bob Geldof's Band Aid recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas", which included Bono, Boy George, Sting, George Michael, Phil Collins, Status Quo, Paul Weller, Bananarama and other prominent UK artists. After two and a half years in England, Watley returned to America and secured a recording deal with MCA Records, eager to establish her own identity.[29] Her debut solo studio album, titled Jody Watley, was released in March 1987, and she co-wrote six of the album's nine songs. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Watley would say that she wanted to showcase her voice against "really funky hard dance tracks."[29] The album's lead single, "Looking for a New Love", became a hit and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[30] The album peaked at number ten on the US Billboard 200, number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and sold 2 million copies in the United States and a total of 4 million copies worldwide. It produced five uptempo dance and R&B singles that charted on the Billboard Hot 100, with three peaking within the top-ten: The first being "Looking for a New Love"  was a #2 hit for Jody and was released in January 1987 as the first single from her debut album. The song became one of the biggest pop and R&B singles of 1987. The single hit number two for four consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1987 and spent four weeks at number-one on the Billboard R&B chart.[1] It is the only single between 1985 and 1990 in the United States to have spent four weeks in the runner-up position and not have reached the number one. The single was kept out of the top spot of the Hot 100 by Cutting Crew's "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" and U2's "With or Without You", and would itself keep Club Nouveau's Hot 100 number-one single "Lean on Me" out of the top spot of the R&B chart. It ranked number 16 on Billboard's year-end chart for 1987. The song also reached number-one on the RPM Singles Chart in Canada. In 1988 the song was nominated for two Soul Train Music Awards for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video, and Best R&B/Soul Single, Female. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The single lookin for a new love came about  While listening to a tape of instrumental tracks given to her by producer André Cymone, Watley reflected on a recent sour romantic breakup. Fusing her own feelings of "I'll show you" with the feel of the track, Watley came up with the basic premise of "Looking for a New Love." The released record is the eight-track demo of the song; that way the emotional urgency of Watley's vocal was still intact. One of the song's key phrases became a popular saying: "Hasta la vista, baby." It wound up on innumerable answering machines and was used by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day (see Hasta la vista, baby). This is what the kids now days would call a banger. Higher at the r&b radio stations While the #56 (US chart) peaking "Still a Thrill" didn't necessarily match the pop chart success of its blockbuster predecessor, it was, however, a major hit on both the R&B and dance charts in 1987. Watley employed a deep lower register on this uptempo R&B / dance song, which she co-wrote. It was produced by Andre Cymone and David Z. The song "don't you want me.  I can remember like yesterday Christmas of 87 I was doing a lot of filling in for vacationing Dj's and this was actually the footings of Dance and Rhythm music to start taking down the white nature of top 40 radio It was released on August 10, 1987 as the third single from the Jody Watley album. The song was produced by Bernard Edwards of Chic-fame, and written by Franne Golde, David Paul Bryant and Jody herself. "Don't You Want Me" was a huge hit in the United States, reaching position number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one and three on the Dance Club Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, respectively. Watley's previous single, "Still a Thrill," fared well in dance and R&B markets,  but less-so in the mainstream. This is the race thing I bring up a lot on this show. It was a lil too much for the radio.  That was enough  and prompted her label, MCA Records, to go in a more pop-friendly direction. "Don't You Want Me" was one of the biggest crossover singles for the year 1987, reaching the top-ten of the Billboard pop and R&B charts. The single was also popular in nightclubs, reaching the top spot of the Billboard dance chart. Some more chart chatter for you Chart performance"Don't You Want Me" landed in the Top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100 the week of October 24, 1987, advancing from number 56 to 40. Jody watley's next single is "most of all" released on April 18, 1988 as the fifth and final single from the Jody Watley self titled...   "Most of All" was the least successful of the five singles released from the Jody Watley album. It peaked at number 60 on the US Billboard Hot 100 but did find success on the Dance Club Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, where it reached numbers eight and eleven, respectively. The song was produced by Patrick Leonard and was co-written by Gardner Cole, both of whom had been involved with Madonna's 1986 album, True Blue. The accompanying black and white music video for "Most of All" was directed by famous Hollywood director David Fincher.   David fincher (thinking) where have I heard that name before.. David fincher.  Oh I know do you watch jimmy Fallon, when Nicole Kidman went on and said that she went around Jimmy a couple of times and sort of liked him and Fallon knew nothing of it..  the mutual friend is David finches   that would make sense. I'm pondering out loud sorry. That isn't confirmed either but. I think that was that guys name For me. the songs kept getting better and I thought the melody of most of all and the hook were incredible. This was a real artist.   (CLIP) most of all At the 30th Annual Grammy Awards of 1988, Watley won the award for Best New Artist, and was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. That same year, she also received nominations for four MTV Video Music Awards and three Soul Train Awards.  Heres a note.  After Shalamar she had two singles released under the name of "Jody", without her last name even though adverts in UK pop magazine, Smash Hits, mentioned that she was "Formerly of Shalamar". This "technicality" (no second name), allowed her controversially to be considered a "New Artist" at the Grammy's, beating Breakfast Club, Cutting Crew, Terence Trent D'Arby and Swing Out Sister. Shortly after winning the Grammy, Watley would be featured in Harper's Bazaar magazine photographed by Francesco Scavullo. Things than became "LARGER THAN LIFE" for Jody watley. that is a play on words a bit as it is the name of jody's next album or sophomore effort.  In the spring of 1989, Watley released her second studio album, Larger than Life, co-writing eleven of the album’s twelve songs. The album sold over 4 million copies worldwide, reaching number 16 on the Billboard 200, and produced four singles: "Real Love" (US #2, #1 R&B, #2 Dance, UK #31), a Gold-certificated single and her first Top 40 UK single since "Looking for a New Love" in 1987;  "Friends" featuring Eric B. & Rakim, (US #9, #3 R&B, #7 Dance, UK #21); and "Everything" (US #4, #3 R&B), her first ballad released as a single. The album's fourth and final single, "Precious Love", was a minor hit, peaking at number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100.[33] "Friends" is notable for being the first multi-format hit single to include the formula of a pop star featuring a guest rapper with the custom full 16-bar verses and bridge concept, and distinguishable from the rap "Intro" by Melle Mel on Chaka Khan's notable cover of Prince's song "I Feel for You". The successful "Friends" formula would become a mainstay formula in commercial pop music and was added as a category at the Grammy's under Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2002. During the summer of 1989, the "Real Love" video, directed by famous Hollywood director David Fincher, was nominated for seven MTV Video Music Awards including Breakthrough Video, Best Art Direction, Best Dance Video and Best Female Video at the 1989 ceremony. That record was held until Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson's video "Scream" received 11 VMA nominations in 1995. The next year, she was nominated for two Soul Train Awards, an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Female Artist, and a Narm Award for Best Selling R&B Female Album. While riding high on her Larger Than Life World Tour, a remix album, titled You Wanna Dance with Me?, was released in October 1989 and achieved Gold status in America. 1989 also saw Watley featured in Harper’s Bazaar "Ten Most Beautiful Women" issue, photographed by Matthew Rolston. That same year Watley appeared on the cover of the Japanese high fashion magazine SPUR for its debut issue.[37] Watley released the million selling "Dance to Fitness" a first for an African-American woman and artist. WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES AGAIN 15 APRIL 2019WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES AGAIN 15 APRIL 2019 When I was a kid I voraciously tore through biographies of the Beatles instead of text books. Even then I had little faith in being educated by people whom I thought were stupid. That's a Bootstrap Theory type of thing caused by reading too many damn John Lennon interviews. Humility would hit hard later.  One thing both Lennon and Paul McCartney would talk about was that, being songwriters, they wanted to write songs for occasions that had a chance to become standards. That's why they wrote their Christmas songs, "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" for John and "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" for Paul. Both of them songs cut to the essence of them fellas for real. You wonder what each might have added to the other's but that's a recipe for a lifetime of WTF. In College Park I was writing a rock opera with my buddy Joel Baily. We were in a band called Love and Hate. We changed our name to Forgotten Sons when that crap hair band Love/Hate started getting played on MTV. Joel and I wrote together all the time. We made a point of it. We wanted to be rock stars. As far as we were concerned we already WERE rock stars so we wrote us a song for the occasion of the winter solstice.  Dig - this is pretty much the song we wrote. It stuck with me all these years. If a song sticks with me for decades I eventually record it, or try to anyway. This was around the time of "Do They Know It's Christmas" - all that pre-internet troglodytal ignorance of the cultures that aren't derived from the Anglo-Saxons. I honestly didn't know that the entire world wasn't celebrating Santa and Jesus on December 25th. Holy fucking shit how the fuck did we exist? I think a big deal was when the Cold War ended and then China started reengaging with the world. Collectively the human race began remembering that there were other parts of the globe besides where one is born, lives, and dies.  Around the time of the 9/11 terror attacks (which happens to be my fucking birthday) I added the stuff about"embrace all of the faiths that would love to kill me." You know, channelling my inner peacenik. You can add American Christians to that list as well. In general that's a spiteful and mean segment of my beloved Americans. That sentence right there hints at my own unrealized bigotry. It's a constant battle. Chances are you've already heard this song. I release it every year in December on whatever social media site is available. I'm very proud of it. Recording wise we did the sleigh bells and the tuned water glasses but my favorite part is at the end when the acoustic guitar doubles the mandolin riff. These things happen during recording. The way I have always operated, or tried to, is that you roll the tape and see what happens during overdubs. That's the funnest part - the spontaneity.  I was anxious to hear how Paul melded together the everything plus the kitchen sink approach I enjoy during recording and fuck if he didn't impress the living shit out of me with this mix. That's something I learned from Brian - trust the guy mixing. HE'S the one spending all the time sorting through vague ideas and sculpting a whole. So I hope you like this one. The arbitrariness of the release is maybe my favorite thing about this song at present.  Quickly - I purposely avoided any talk of the origins of what for all intents and purposes is an ancient celebration based on the movements of the stars. "Ancient" means, judging by the latest discoveries in anthropology, 100,000-200,000 years old. That deficiency of knowledge outside of one's own lineage is the sticking point that unscrupulous leaders use to aquire and sustain power. It's a useful tool. I have grown profoundly dissappointed in the reaction of the free peoples of the Earth to the vast networks of interwebs. I had mostly assumed that people were generally thoughtful and reasonable where as, if this past decade is taken as a sample of the reaction of civilization to new technologies that are inherently complicated to understand and yet superlatively easy to use, most people are easily swayed and governed by predjudice and place.  I'm still astounded that the great experiment of the fouding fathers has survived this long because, clearly, as I sit here  on 16 April 2019, the idea is better than the species to which it was gifted in hopes of a better world.  Have a great Christmas this spring!

Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. Joining Tim for a special Christmas edition is writer Stephen O'Brien, who's here to talk about little-heard eighties Christmas Singles including Hokey Cokey by The Snowmen, Jingle Bells Laughing All The Way by The Hysterics, What Are We Gonna Get 'Er Indoors by Dennis Waterman and George Cole, Oh Blimey It's Christmas by Frank Sidebottom, Christmas In Hollis by Run DMC, Old Fashioned Christmas by Anne Charleston And Ian Smith, and Do They Know It's Christmas, by Band Aid II?, not to mention Bing Crosby and David Bowie's stilted natter, Boris Gardiner's mercifully forgotten third single, and the thorny question of whether Keeping The Dream Alive by Freiheit is a Christmas Single or a load of old twaddle. Along the way we'll be hearing the World's Worst Jane Leeves Impression, revealing who wrote and sang the theme tune for The Quatermass Experiment, avoiding giving the actual official worst Christmas Present possible in the entirety of history, and finding out how to get accidentally mistaken for an extra in Neighbours. My first brand new podcast in nearly seven months. Where does the time go? They say patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait and I think this one was worth waiting for. A good blend of the familiar and the not-so-familiar; some things you may remember and some you've long since forgotten or maybe never heard in your entire life. Before I get to a few band notes, I want to mention that I have now upgraded my account back to a Pro account. I just couldn't bear the thought that people were actually making a point of coming to this site to listen to the music only to be told by a pre-recorded message that they could not because of bandwidth limitations. What does that mean for you all? It means no more running out of bandwidth two days after I post a new episode. With apologies to the Pet Shop Boys it means more "opportunities" to listen and to download when you have time. It means more storage, so I don't have to delete the audio from an older podcast just to post a new one. (You may have already noticed I've re-posted some of the more recent back-catalog episodes). Over time, I will add more of them. For long-time listeners, it's a chance to re-visit some of the older stuff from "back in the day". For newer listeners, it will be like a glut of new podcasts to check out. I also want to note that I've removed the audio for my previous episode (CRC #42) as the recording levels were all over the map and I didn't think the quality was up to snuff. Perhaps 5 or 6 years ago, it would have been okay, I suppose, but even in light of the cheap mixer and free recording software I use to assemble these 'casts, I think this podcast has come too far now and demands a higher level of quality. So, I may re-record that one at a future date. At that point, I'll re-post. Same for back-catalog items. The really good ones, I'll re-post. The ones that could use a little work will most likely be re-recorded and re-posted as a "reboot" episode. All in all, thank you all again for tuning in. Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2017! Now on to the bands ... If you've been a follower of this podcast since the beginning and you've clung to the belief that, against all probability, the thrash metal band, Slayer, would somehow make its presence felt at some point then your patience has finally been rewarded. And you should book your ticket to Vegas immediately. Taking a riff from the group's tune, "War Ensemble", "I Want You" was one of four Top-25 hits for Jez Willis and Tim Garbutt on Utah Saints' self-titled debut. The duo were at the pioneering edge of sampling, also grabbing a snippet of Kate Bush from her track Cloudbusting for the song "Something Good" and a soundbite from the inimitable Annie Lennox from her song "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)" for the track "What Can You Do For Me". Called "the first true Stadium House band" by Bill Drummond of The KLF, Utah Saints were one of the first rave acts to play live and one I had the good fortune to see on the same bill with The Shamen in the early 90s during the rave culture explosion. And let me tell you: it was quite a show ... probably. I first heard "Salvation" by The Hood sometime in 1989 while in college. A guy who lived down the hall from me had a version of it on an old mix tape. I really liked the track and was pleased as punch when the first of many Razormaid! discs from my nascent subscription showed up in the mail containing a mix of that song. It is a portion of that 10+ minute version that appears here. I would soon come across a movie soundtrack of the same name while sifting through record bins at a local indie shop. New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, The Hood, hip-hop producer extraordinaire Arthur Baker and others appeared on the album, so I purchased it. While I've listened to the song "Salvation" umpteen times over the years, I did not know much about the band or its members. To this day, I still don't. I spent the better part of an hour trying to find information on the group, but mostly found song credits and track listings. Eventually, I did find a tiny bit of info on a website called The Lost Turntable. The info was posted by an Arthur Baker and a John Hood respectively, both of whom I can only assume to be the real article. "the hood- is john hood, a legendary nyc party promoter-doorman,who is also quite a good writer. he was signed for a short time on the sire label and is active on the club scene in south beach, miami, florida" "Wow! Yeah, that The Hood track is indeed me: John Hood. (Thanks AB!) And I'm delighted to find it posted. In fact, till right now I never even had an MP3 of the song! So if no one minds, I'll post this, save this, and send this around. Nice to find Salvation!" If anyone knows anything more about The Hood, I would LOVE to get a one-sheet or press kit or bio on them. Speaking of bands I don't know much about, Gruesome Twosome would qualify as well. Sort of a one-off project for founders Samy Birnbach from Minimal Compact (aka Lord Solomon Pearbrook) and Norwegian producer Per Martinsen, who had been recording under the name Syamese, "Hallucination Generation" is the only official single from the group and was released in 1989. A cult classic in its own right, the song sort of bridges the gap between traditional industrial dance music and the bourgeoning New Beat music scene that was starting to take hold at the time. Birnbach and Martinsen would later collaborate with the likes of Bertrand Burgalat, Thrash from The Orb, Paul Kendall and Fortran 5 to eventually release a full-length album called Candy From Strangers, which was released in 1993. Birnbach currently releases material under the DJ Morpheus moniker, having once worked with Colin Newman from Wire for a project called Oracle, while Martinsen performs as Mental Overdrive. While it's probably not the best analogy as they employed very different musical styles, Ultravox is much like the band Genesis in the sense that they have two distinct timelines, led by two distinctly different front men. And much like one could argue Peter Gabriel represented the true vision for Genesis, there is no denying that Phil Collins took the band to massive commercial heights and is probably remembered more readily as the face of the group. Similarly, one could argue that while John Foxx may have been the driving force behind Ultravox during their formative years, it was Midge Ure, who took over after Foxx left for a solo career, that kept the band from imploding and pushed them further into the mainstream and to massive success in the UK. With 7 Top-10 albums and 17 Top-10 singles, U-Vox, like many other bands of the day, took their cue from the glam rock outfits that came before such as Neu! In fact, early on Ultravox was known as Ultravox! (with an exclamation point) in deference to Neu! The first album with the classic line-up of Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross would be the amazing Vienna, which marked a very different direction for the group. Produced by long-time Kraftwerk producer Conny Plank, the album included the title track, which would reach #2 in the UK and would be the highest charted song for the band. (John Lennon's "Woman" and "Shaddap You Face" by Joe Dolce would both keep the song from reaching #1). And while the 1982 album Quartet, produced by George Martin, would be the best-selling US album for U-Vox, the band would not again reach the level of critical success they found with Vienna. The song in this podcast is the 12" version of "We Came to Dance", the final single from Ultravox's sixth studio album, Quartet, released on April 18, 1983. The single reached #18 on the UK charts and was the last of seven consecutive top-20 singles for the band. This being the Christmas season, I would be derelict not to mention that Midge Ure also co-wrote (with Bob Geldof of Boomtown Rats fame) and produced the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. Last but not least, I want to mention "State Of The Nation" by New Order. Though it reached #1 on the UK Indie Singles Chart and #30 on the UK Singles chart in 1986, the song is probably not a favorite of the majority of New Order fans. I would wager if every NO devotee were to compile a list of his or her Top 10 songs, it would probably appear in less than 5% of those lists. Still, the track is a great one even if only for the fact that it's one of the few NO songs whose title actually appears within the lyrics and/or chorus of the song. As most die-hard fans know, the titles of most NO tunes have little or no relevance to the subject matter being discussed. "Shellshock", "Regret", "Touched By The Hand Of God" and "Confusion" are a few songs I can think of off the top of my head that go against that grain. While the song did not appear on the album, Brotherhood, which was released around this time, both the remix version appearing here and the B-side called "Shame Of The Nation", which was produced by John Robie, appear on the Substance compilation, released in 1987. That will do it for this epidsode. I've got my next podcast ready to record. As soon as I find some time, I'll do just that. Happy Listening!

Hello again to all of you and welcome to Mansión Inglés Christmas podcast. A very merry Christmas to all of you! This is podcast number 44, recorded for December 2011. Taking your English to the next level and into the year 2012. La canción de navidad este año es "Do They know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. We also have some commonly confused words for advanced students, and in the business section I tell you a true story about a Company Christmas party I had when I worked in the UK many years ago. Pero vamos a empezar en el nivel básico con la pronunciacóon del vocabulario en el primer ejercicio del cuaderno. ¿Cómo se dice en inglés pastel de navidad? - Christmas cake - repeat Christmas cake. ¿cómo se dice arból de navidad? - Christmas tree y muñeco de nieve? - a snowman - repeat - snowman. Papa Noel es Father Christmas y también Santa Claus ¿Como se dice regalo? - present. So Christmas presents son....regalos de Navidad. Repeat: Christmas presents. Cartas de navidad son Christmas cards y un reno es reindeer - repeat: reindeer. How many reindeer does Santa have? Hmmm there's Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen. That's 8. So Santa has 8 reindeer. Santa goes down the chimney. Chimney is similar in Spanish - chimenea. Repeat: Santa goes down the chimney. He takes presents down the chimney. Children put a Christmas stocking, or calcetin de navidad, above the chimney. Santa puts presents in the stocking. Sweets are caramelos, dulces. Repeat: sweets. Se dice sweets in British English y candy in American English. Sometimes Santa puts sweets in the Christmas stocking. Listen and repeat - escucha y repite: Father Christmas is too fat. There's a reindeer in the chimney. There aren't many presents this year. Where are the presents? The presents are under the tree. There are some sweets in the Christmas stocking. Look, it's snowing! Let's make a snowman. The 25th of December is Christmas Day. The 24th of December is Christmas Eve. What's the 26th of December? - Boxing Day. Boxing Day es un día festivo en Gran Bretaña. Repeat Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, Boxing Day. January the 1st is New Year's Day and December the 31st is New Year's Eve. New Year's Eve is the last day of the year. Listen and repeat some more Christmas expressions from the intermediate section: Christmas decorations Christmas pudding the three wise men Christmas crackers carol singers Christmas stocking Can you believe that the English parliament once passed a law that made Christmas illegal? Well yes, In 1647 all festivities were banned (prohibido) by Oliver Cromwell. He thought that it was immoral to celebrate and have fun on a holy day (un día santo=a holy day). The ban was lifted only when Cromwell lost power in 1660. So it's not only these days that governments are stupid. Another interesting Christmas fact is that in Russia it was forbidden to celebrate Christmas until 1992. This is because Christmas celebrations were banned after the Russian Revolution in 1917. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint (el patrón) of sailors (marineros), merchants (comerciantes), archers (arqueros), thieves (ladrónes), children (niños), and students. On average, only 13 per cent of British families attend church on Christmas Day. Only 13% in Britain go to church. The first Christmas tree with lights was in 1882. It was made by a friend of Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, and it was displayed on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The very first Christmas tree. And the film Bad Santa starring Billy Bob Thornton, the ex-husband of Angelina Jolie, holds the record for the most swearwords (tacos) in a Christmas film. But it's in the uncut version which may not be easy to find. I've already tried. Now listen to some words and expressions from this exercise in Spanish, and try to say the English translation before I do. Ready? aprobar una ley - to pass a law prohibir - to ban - Christmas was banned - smoking is banned (prohibido). quitar una prohibición - to lift a ban - the ban was lifted. sabio - wise - He's a wise man. los Reyes Magos - The Three Wise men un par de medias - a pair of stockings calcetín navideño - Christmas stocking prohibido - forbidden   bombilla - light bulb - B-U-L-B light bulb nuez - walnut I enjoyed writing the exercise for the Christmas song this year, "Do They Know It's Christmas", and I also enjoyed watching it on YouTube. I remember when Bob Geldoff from the Boomtown Rats and Midge Ure from Ultravox formed Band Aid in the 1980's. And now all those stars have changed so much: Sting, Phil Collins, Bono, George Michael. Paul Weller and others from some great British bands like Status Quo, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet. But now I'm just showing my age! Listen and repeat these words from the song that have the same vowel sound - el mismo sonido vocal: sun / ones flow / grows tears / fear afraid / shade instead /spread smile /life Listen to some words from the song in Spanish, and try to say the English translation before I do. Ok? sombra - shade or shadow - shade es un lugar sin sol. If the sun is too strong, sit in the shade. - and shadow es una proyección - las sombras de los árboles - the shadows of the trees, for example. abundancia - plenty - There's plenty of food. alegría - joy extender, difundir - to spread - you spread butter on bread, for example, or spread joy and happiness at Christmas time. oración - prayer - Say a prayer for me. ¿Cómo se dice rezar en inglés? - to pray - They go to church to pray lagrimas - tears - How do you say llorar in English? - to cry - I cried for you - So cry is the verb and tears, the  noun, the water that comes from your eyes when you cry - you can also cry tears of joy if you're happy. fluir - is to flow - a river flows and if you cry a lot, tears can flow picadura - sting - the verb and the noun are the same - to sting and a sting - a bee or a wasp can sting you. So can scorpions. In the song they sang about picadura amarga - bitter sting - the bitter sting of tears - "The only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears." ¿Cómo se dice en inglés en vez de, en lugar de? - instead of - Repeat:  Instead of - I'll have tea instead of coffee - Let's go to the beach instead of the pub - Nah - Let's go to the pub instead of the beach! regalo - gift - Before we translated regalo as present, but you can also say gift. I've got a gift for you - Please accept this gift from all of us. da de comer, alimentar - is to feed - food -F-O-O-D is a noun, and to feed - F-E-E-D is the verb. - Don't forget to feed the dog - How often do you have to feed a baby? In the advanced section we had some advanced vocabulary. Do you remember these words? Sleigh - Eight reindeer pull Santa's sleigh. Sleigh is trineo. The spelling is a bit strange - S-L-E-I-G-H. Repeat: sleigh - Here's a definition from Wikipedia with two similar words: "A sled - S-L-E-D, sledge - S-L-E-D-G-E, or sleigh is a land vehicle with a smooth underside or possessing a separate body supported by two or more smooth, relatively narrow, longitudinal runners that travels by sliding across a surface." Holly in Spanish is acebo and mistletoe is muérdago. Repeat: mistletoe. It's traditional to kiss someone under the mistletoe. When I lived in London I used this tradition at Christmas with mixed results, especially with strangers, and especially after a few drinks! Eggnog is a popular Christmas drink. It's made with milk or cream, sugar, beaten eggs and liquor such as brandy, rum or maybe whisky with also some cinnamon or nutmeg on top. I've never liked it much, It's much too sweet for me, but my grandmother liked it. I prefer a glass or two of Jack Daniels or single malt whiskey. Mice pies are small round pastry tarts filled with mincemeat (carne picada). I don't like them, but I love Christmas pudding. You would probably find mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake in a Christmas hamper. A hamper is a cesta - Christmas hamper - cesta de navidad. Companies in the UK used to give Christmas hampers to their employees when I lived their, but with the recession I'm not sure how many companies still do this. many companies probably can't afford it. Do you know how to say pesebre in English? manger. The baby Jesus lay in a manger. In the confusing words exercise you could find a lot of the answers from the prepositions that go together with the words. Try to remember the prepositions that go with words. For example, insist -  He insisted ON seeing the manager. Accustomed TO - He's not accustomed to driving on the right hand side of the road. To be familiar WITH someone or something - Are you familiar with the law? To be aware OF - Are you aware of the rules? To be used TO something - Are you used to the food? Instead of, apart from etc. If you make an announcement, you say something publicly. I have an announcement to make. We're getting married. The Prime Minister made an announcement on TV last night. How do you say warning? - A warning is una advertencia. Let this be a warning - que esto sirva de advertencia It happened without warning - sin previo aviso Advice is consejo and it's an uncountable noun so we say a piece of advice or some advice. Let me give you a piece of advice, son. A notice can be a written sign un aviso to put up a notice in the street, for example. You can take notice of someone - hacer caso - or not take notice. Don't take any notice of him, he's an idiot! at work you can hand in your notice if you decide to leave your job- (de dimisión o despido) preaviso: I have to give a month's notice - tengo que avisar con un mes de antelación. You can also do something at short notice - con poca antelación. until further notice means hasta nuevo aviso - There will be no trains leaving this station until further notice. Do you say reunión in Spanish or reencuentro? - a reunion of school friends. For example,  when you get together and meet up after a long time. You can have a family reunion - una reunión familiar. In the dictionary newscaster is presentador de informativo or locutor. I also found busto parlante which is an expression I hadn't heard before. If you get lost you ask for directions, except if you're a man in which case you insist you know the way and you keep driving until you find your way again or run out of petrol! Signs can be carteles, pancartas, símbolos or signos, but a road sign es una señal, in Spain anyway. In the business English section I told a true story about when I used to work in an insurance office in London, and every Christmas we would have a firm's Christmas party. Firm F-I-R-M is another word for company - empresa. We don't often use the word enterprise when we speak about companies in English, although it does also mean empresa.   I'll read the text to you. Try to remember as much of the text as possible because I will test you after. The Firm's Christmas Party I used to work for a very large and successful insurance company in London. Every year, in the middle of December, we would have a Christmas party, paid for by the company. They had a lot of money. Back in the 1980's I suppose our office alone employed over 600 people, and there must have been around 1,000 at the party. It usually took place on Friday evening. This meant that no work was done after lunch, because lunch would be in the pub! We'd start drinking about 1pm and after 3 or 4 drinks, we'd get on the train to the centre of London or take the coach provided by the firm. The venue was a huge theatre and dance hall in the Strand in the centre of London, but we wouldn't go straight there. Each department generally went with their workmates to a pub nearby for more drinks. I remember that there were mostly men at the 'pre-party' drink. Maybe the girls were getting ready and putting on evening dresses and make up. There was a special atmosphere in the pubs at Christmas time. People in London actually spoke to each other and were friendly. They lost their English coldness and stuffiness. When we finally arrived at the party most of us were drunk, and very hungry. The food was always good, but I mainly remember the music and the incredible amount of alcohol everyone consumed. I don't remember anyone being sober. Boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives were banned from the event, and it was common for employees to 'pair-up' for a kiss and a dance for the evening. Things were a little crazy. Only once a year, at Christmas time, 1,000 office workers stopped being boring and English and actually enjoyed themselves, they let their hair down and went a bit wild!   Ok, listen again and when I stop speaking, try to remember the next word and say it before I do.
