Guess who had a hearing, a small win and is feeling pretty good about himself? Guess again, because it is not the show's resident counsel, but in fact the illustrated man has had words, not pictures, and tells the tale. We have found more words about the AFL Meat Market, the AFLW problem, the Spring Racing Carnival and of course the dearly departed in The Deathalyser. Musically it is underrated Aussie songs and some rippers get unearthed to enjoy their deserved moment in the sunshine. You may hear Mental as Anything, Goanna, TISM, The Easybeats and Hush in glowing terms or will it be William Shakespeare, Pussyfoot, Joe Dolce or Warwick Capper that rises like a mushroom through the fluent and effluent babble of the boys? Mike Brady was born in England and moved with his family to Australia when he was 11 years old. His recording career began in the mid 60's with the formation of MPD Ltd (Mike, Pete & Danny). After MPD Ltd, Mike spent the majority of his time building his career as producer and writer of jingles for Television and Radio. One such jingle brought Mike back into the public spotlight. He was asked to record a promotional song for Channel Seven's Football program. This song being “Up There Cazaly” went on to be the biggest selling local single of its time, with sales in excess of 250,000 and has become the unofficial Anthem of all Australian Rules Football Fans. Over the years, he has been responsible for some of Australia's most catchy advertising jingles. During the 70's Mike formed his own Record Label and Record Production Company, Full Moon Records., and publishing company, Remix Publishing. Two hugely successful singles released by Full Moon were Mark Jackson's “I'm An Individual” and Joe Dolce's “Shuddap You Face”. “Shuddap You Face” broke the record previously held by Mike's “Up There Cazaly” as the biggest selling single in Australian History and has been translated into many different languages. Mike and his company have produced albums for artists such as Tina Arena, Colleen Hewett, Mark Gillespie and Mike Rudd and Bill Putt. Many of Mike's songs have been recorded by leading artists including Tina Arena, and John Farnham. In June 2013 Brady was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to the community and to music as a composer and performer. On Monday 3rd July 2017 Mike was honored to be named Victorian of the Year in a ceremony in Melbourne.

This episode originally released as episode 80. Not many of us think of adding 1mg of melatonin with THC to ensure a deeper, longer night's sleep… or blending ashwagandha with CBD to better cope with stress…or mixing St. John's Wort with cannabinoids to better cope with pain. But Dr. Kevin Spelman is a molecular biologist, industry consultant and a clinician who has observed that a mix of plant medicines can be more healing than just one individual plant on its own. Spelman is that rare breed of scientist whose worldview integrates the wisdom of the east and the hard science of the west. He has worked as an Ayurvedic clinician and alongside Chinese medicine practitioners as well as being a researcher at the National Institutes of Health. It was in the NIH labs where he learned just how skeptically plant science was viewed by his colleagues. “When I spoke about certain molecules, my colleagues were all in,” he told me before I recorded this podcast, “but the minute I started talking about medicinal plants they'd turn suspect. I could almost see the thought bubble appear above their heads: ‘Quack! This guy can't possibly be for real.'” This podcast is full of very real science about the mysterious world of plant medicines. In it, Spelman broaches three areas I want you to know about. Herbal allies. Especially relevant in the time of COVID-19 are the benefits of using echinacea, astragalus, and ashwagandha to strengthen our immune response. But he also explains that these substances should be combined thoughtfully rather than randomly thrown together. “One of the classic mistakes naturopaths make is just putting all in there. When you combine things properly you can induce emergent properties that you wouldn't see with just one compound.” Low dose cannabinoids. We are big proponents of low dose cannabis medicines on this podcast. Spelman points out that there is a scientific phenomenon called “hormesis” in which a low dose of a substance, like cannabis or psilocybin, can have beneficial results while a higher dose can cause symptoms to worsen. “I had a lot of sciatica pain, maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10," he says, "and I didn't want to use THC because my job demands I be critically observant. I found a sub-threshold dose of less than 1.5 mg of THC allowed me to work clear headed without a lot of pain.” Diet. Spelman points out that modern society is drugging illnesses that can be traced to what he calls a “phytonutrient deficiency.” His solution is the same that Michael Pollan arrived at while writing The Omnivore's Dilemma: “Eat more plants.” Listen in to learn more on this emerging field, and be sure to read Kevin's most recent blog on Powering Up Your Immune Response with Cannabinoids and Botanicals. And please read "Practical COVID Tips as We Open" (and musical accompaniment) by the always impressive Dr. Jeff Chen at UCLA. We can't rely on the administration to give reliable info so we must rely on the smartest scientists we know. Jeff is another one worth listening to.

This episode originally released as episode 40 . This interview with Dr. Julie Holland marks the 40th podcast in the Brave New Weed series and it's one of our best yet. As a podcaster I can often map out the route a discussion will take, but this conversation with Julie ebbed and flowed in the most delightfully surprising ways. I never knew where it was leading. What I did know was that every turn it took was more interesting than the last.In this episode, we discuss: CBD and dental pain and how this remarkable cannabinoid calms nerve irritation What an orgasm and a delicious meal have in common (you never even thought to ask, did you?) Why men have nipples The real danger of masturbating to porn Screenophilia (or the reason why the next generation is falling in love with their screens) Curing your runny nose with psychedelicsHow cannabinoids can help cure our country's PMS. Tune in and share it widely. As cannabis becomes more mainstream and a broader swath of people shake off the yoke of prohibition, so many more conversations about the plant's powers are taking place. Our mission is to stay at the forefront of these conversations and lead the way in the post-Prohibition era. If you value independent explorations such as these, free of advertising and the traditional constraints imposed by mainstream media, please support on us on Patreon. For less than the price of a coffee in NYC your donation can help us continue this work. We do this for love, not money, and we appreciate any help you can offer to keep the love flowing. And where else will you learn why men have nipples?
RECUT from Episode 106: Many people who use substances say that they create a deeper connection with “god,” “nature” or their own “spiritual” selves. Yet most organized religions are averse to plant medicines including psilocybin, ayahuasca, peyote and cannabis. Christians call these entheogens (plants that when ingested produce higher states of consciousness) false gods and warn against them for a host of reasons, primarily because they don't want adherents straying from the flock.Buddhists use different words but similarly proscribe intoxicants that lead users into states of “mindlessness” or “carelessness.” But as an intermittent traveler in spiritual circles I can assure you substance use among Western spiritual teachers is far more widespread than openly admitted. So many of them use psychedelics and cannabis, but maintain a well-guarded “conspiracy of silence,” as this week's guest, Stephen Batchelor, puts it.Batchelor is an esteemed teacher, writer, artist, and Buddhist scholar, who is best known for his secular approach to Buddhism and his openness to using entheogens to deepen his own contemplative practices. At 18, he went to India, where he was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 1974. He traveled, first to Germany and then South Korea, where he left the Tibetan tradition to train in Zen Buddhism. But in 1985 he disrobed, married and moved to France, where he and his wife still live in a small village near Bordeaux. His work has centered around developing a more modern, universalist approach to Buddhism, one that integrates the truths of tradition with the needs of our time.“The bulk of Buddhist teachers set out on this path through psychedelics and cannabis in the 1960s and 70s,” Batchelor, 68, told me. “But Buddhism, for many reasons, is too trapped in its own history. It appears user friendly but scratch the surface and you'll hit a bedrock of moralism. It's heavily committed to certain dogmas that it won't or can't release.”If you are interested in Batchelor's secular approach to this religion, I recommend Buddhism Without Beliefs, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist, and his most recent, The Art of Solitude, which was written before COVID but helped me mightily during the darker days of lockdown and forced isolation. It's my honor to have Stephen as a guest and my pleasure to share the conversation with you.

So, listen to Kyle Reese and take heed: “That terminator is out there; it can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with, it doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear, and it absolutely will not stop...EVER…until you are listening to Episode 63 of OPENING WEEKEND!” Halloween, 1984: It's inevitable. Pot. Weed. Grass. We all think we know cannabis. But do we? Somewhere between the illicit joints and pot brownies, the conversation stopped -- and only now is it re-taking the center stage as more states pass legislation to legalize. In Brave New Weed: Adventures into the Uncharted World of Cannabis, author Joe Dolce travels to the new frontier of cannabis, shedding light on everything you didn’t know about weed (and didn’t even think to ask). Through dispatches from Amsterdam, Israel, Colorado, and more, Dolce endeavors to “tear down the walls of the cannabis closet” and find answers to questions. From detailing trials where murderers claimed “insanity due to marijuana consumption” to uncovering success stories about the plant’s impressive medicinal compounds, Dolce paints a fresh portrait of our attitudes towards cannabis and reveals the power of weed. Follow this remarkable individual as he discusses the history, future and truths, myths, and the common misconceptions surrounding pot/marijuana/cannabis...call it what you will, it’s all good for you!Our podcast will delight you as Joe and John discuss the ever-evolving world of cannabis. Dolce explains the historical relevance of the cannabis plant, its descent into the forbidden and finally into a Schedule I illegal “drug” and back again, state by state, while remaining federally illegal. As Joe travels around the world seeking societal input on whether cannabis is helpful or not, he will surprise and delight with tales of cannabis’ success, its history of prohibition, the welcomed surprise of those who use it for medical purposes and the fight which continues for full acceptance of this ancient plant. As Malanca and Dolce discuss the political landscape and its influence on marijuana, we find that perhaps we don’t know the truth about this sacred herb and that the answers to questions inevitably lead to more questions about cannabis! Tune in to watch something a bit different, yet very relevant in today’s world, and so very helpful when you ask yourself, “Should I use cannabis? Is it a dangerous ‘drug’? Do stoners know something I don’t and if cannabis is so effective in the treatment of disease and symptoms why are powers beyond my control dictating my health and wellness choices?”Some of the questions and their answers will enlighten your mind, warm your heart, fuel your anger and perhaps confirm what you knew or change what you thought was the truth.Tune in to see!Podcast Video Interview: https://youtu.be/QcilUNDFkaA
Brave New Weed: Adventures into the Uncharted World of Cannabis with author Joe Dolce today on Hempresent only on Cannabis Radio. The former editor-in-chief of Details and Star adventures into the fascinating "brave new world" of cannabis, tracing its history and possible future as he investigates the social, medical, legal, and cultural ramifications of this surprisingly versatile plant. Pot. Weed. Grass. Mary Jane. We all think we know what cannabis is and what we use it for. But do we? Our collective understanding of this surprising plant has been muddled by politics and morality; what we think we know isn't the real story. A war on cannabis has been waged in the United States since the early years of the twentieth century, yet in the past decade, society has undergone a massive shift in perspective that has allowed us to reconsider our beliefs. In Brave New Weed, Joe Dolce travels the globe to "tear down the cannabis closet" and de-mystify this new frontier, seeking answers to the questions we didn't know we should ask. Dolce heads to a host of places, including Amsterdam, Israel, California, and Colorado, where he skillfully unfolds the odd, shocking, and wildly funny history of this complex plant. From the outlandish stories of murder trials where defendants claimed "insanity due to marijuana consumption" to the groundbreaking success stories about the plant's impressive medicinal benefits, Dolce paints a fresh and much-needed portrait of cannabis, our changing attitudes toward it, and the brave new direction science and cultural acceptance are leading us. Enlightening, entertaining, and thought-provoking, Brave New Weed is a compelling read that will surprise and educate proponents on both sides of the cannabis debate.
In this episode Jon (@JonPiccini) and Dave (@withsobersenses) continue their discussion about race, whiteness and Australia. This time they are reading Ghassan Hage’s classic of 90s Theory White Nation. We talk through his ideas about Whiteness, White Nationalism and fantasy, his critique of tolerance and multiculturalism and try to work out what these ideas give us and also what they miss. How does Hage’s work reflect the changes in Australian society, its internal conflicts and the ruptures and continuations in radical ideas? We finish this episode with Joe Dolce’s Shaddap You Face – picked as an example of a particular kind of humour produced by 70s/80s multiculturalism. Since then we have discovered that Joe Dolce, a self-declared Leftist, has moved over to writing for Quadrant, largely it seems due as a reaction to cultural debates. So there you go.

A two-way interview between journalist Patricia Miller and Joe Dolce about the gut-wrenching illness called hyperemesis.A few weeks ago Patricia Miller, associate editor of Cannabis & Tech Today magazine, called to talk about hyperemesis, the strange and increasingly more reported illness that hits some cannabis users hard. Hyperemesis is defined as bouts of cyclical vomiting caused from combusting flower (i.e., smoking a joint), but trust me, what happens is way more painful than simple puking. It’s as if your stomach is being turned inside out – gut wrenching -- and it can last for hours, in extreme cases, days. The few scientific papers on it contend that it is followed by a compulsive desire to take hot showers. In my case I was so wasted after each bout I could barely crawl into bed, let alone stand in a shower. As one who always wants to be first on a trend, I was hit with hyperemesis while reporting Brave New Weed and about a half dozen times in the subsequent two years. I couldn’t understand how a plant that chemotherapy patients use to quell nausea would send me into paroxysms of puking. After months of investigating I never identified the cause but I did learn a lot about the chemistry and biology of the cannabis plant, and turned that into a book. There’s no consensus about what hyperemesis is or what detonates it. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam surmised it is dose or strain related. Others blame pesticides or other chemicals used in cultivation that have not been properly cleared from harvested bud. Others say it’s caused by today’s super strong weed that can clock in at 30% THC. My own experience elides all of these theories. I was smacked down after a fat dab as well as on the very first puff of a joint. As for the quality/variety of the herb, well, I’ve been privileged to inhale some of the finest, organic, sun-grown, pesticide-free weed grown in North America, so quality and variety aren’t the only culprits. Patricia proposed interviewing me about my experiences but I suggested we interview each other in hopes of informing more people who’ve been felled. I don’t think hyperemesis is necessarily a new illness; rather, I suspect more people are reporting it now that legalization has opened up the conversation. Some sufferers I’ve met have quit using completely to avoid any future misery. Personally, I’ve navigated a cautious path and have concluded that the only surefire way of inhaling flower without retching is through vaporization. My untested theory is that there is something in the plant matter itself that triggers the convulsions. Before this interview I asked a few chemists if they had come across any home grown remedies. The only response came from James Curran, who has appeared on Episode 67 of this podcast. He forwarded this study that identifies capsaicin, the fiery ingredient in cayenne pepper, as a possible antidote because it interferes with the biochemical triggering. And here’s a link to Miller’s report. Clearly, there’s more to learn, so if any of you out there in cannabisland have insights, observations or stories to share, let us know.

In the next 5 years cannabinoids stand to become the new vanilla. That's a very scary scenario. Listen in to find out exactly what that means.Have you ever wondered how vanilla, which costs about $10,000/kilo to harvest and process, can cost just $15 per bottle in the store? How a product that is only grown in a handful of regions in the world is found in so many kitchens? I didn’t either until I spoke to Jim Plamondon, who is the VP of Marketing of the Thai Cannabis Corporation, an impressive thought leader on the future of global cannabis, and an entrepreneur who mission is no less than creating cannabis products that “reduce poverty, respect the environment and raise quality at a respectable price.” But back to vanilla. Vanilla is an artisanal product that grows in only a handful of regions of the world. Processing and extracting vanilla has always enormously time consuming and expensive. In the 1970s, the McCormick spice company synthesized the vanillin molecule from petroleum, then combined it with about 30 other compounds to produce a substance that is in taste and smell (and chemical formulation) identical to the vanilla that grows on trees. Today artificial vanilla supplies 99% of global demand. The story of vanilla is the future that cannabis foretold, or so thinks Jim Plamondon (and me). Just like artisanal vanilla growing legal cannabis indoors in North America is expensive. A gram costs a whopping $7—unsustainably high if legal weed is ever going to compete with black market pricing or be as available as aspirin. So, either cannabis is going to be grown cheaply and outdoors at the equator, which is, after all where the finest strains -- Panama Red, Columbian Gold, Thai Stick, Jamaican Lamb’s Breath – come from -- or cannabinoids that go into medicines or blended into oils are going to be produced in a lab. These lab-constructed so called “cultured cannabinoids” will be grown from yeast in genetic engineering labs. They’ll be produced at scale and will cost a fraction of the price of extracting them from plants and they will be used for many applications: in pharmaceuticals, or blended with terpenes, flavonoids and other compounds to approximate the taste, smell and effects of cannabis oils. And because The FDA and EU define any product as “natural” if their flavor chemicals are extracted from yeast, these products will be legally “natural.”It’s true bio-engineered cannabinoids might not have the same entourage effect as whole plant cannabis. But if you’re paying pennies instead of dollars and still getting 70% of the effects, are you really going to complain? Does anyone complain (or even know) the source of their vanilla, or their vitamins, for that matter? This future is not light years away. There are already a dozen companies engineering yeast (and algae) into cannabinoids. And while I’m not endorsing this method of production, it is right around the corner.Mainstream media is not capable of dealing with these complicated and crucial topics but Jim is an evidence based futurist -- well worth listening to. He’s also got a slamming blog. This interview occurs in two parts. The first is a brilliant history of how and where the world’s greatest strains developed and why they are about to make a huge resurgence. The second is on the bioengineering of cannabinoids, a topic I’ll be exploring ethically and economically in future episode. And huge thanks to Jim for supplying the hilarious Joe Dolce musical interlude about 25 minutes into the interview. Just listen to see what I mean.
It's the end of term, so we thought we'd treat you to a slightly longer edition. A quiz show is nothing without it's contestant - celebrity or otherwise - so Lucy & Jenny talk about those who are remembered for all the right, but mostly all the wrong reasons. Comedy legend Richard Herring re-lives some of his quiz show appearances and injustices - he will always shudder whenever he hears 'Shaddup your face' - which is presumably often. Plus, Thomas De Bock takes us through the TV quiz show scene in Belgium. In this week's listener quiz - courtesy of Chris Walsh - Jenny & Lucy keep their buzzers a mystery... put your guesses as to what they might be in the comments below! So in short: Herring, Belgium, legendary contestants and Joe Dolce ... there's an awful lot of Joe Dolce for some reason. FOB is back for a Christmas special on Friday 21st December 2018! This episode we welcome two guest hosts: comedian Jamie Gaul from Upright Citizens Brigade and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Dolce. Regarding the world of supernatural, Joe is a skeptic while Jamie is a “boo-liever.” That’s not actually said in the show. I just thought of that right now. My first brand new podcast in nearly seven months. Where does the time go? They say patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait and I think this one was worth waiting for. A good blend of the familiar and the not-so-familiar; some things you may remember and some you've long since forgotten or maybe never heard in your entire life. Before I get to a few band notes, I want to mention that I have now upgraded my account back to a Pro account. I just couldn't bear the thought that people were actually making a point of coming to this site to listen to the music only to be told by a pre-recorded message that they could not because of bandwidth limitations. What does that mean for you all? It means no more running out of bandwidth two days after I post a new episode. With apologies to the Pet Shop Boys it means more "opportunities" to listen and to download when you have time. It means more storage, so I don't have to delete the audio from an older podcast just to post a new one. (You may have already noticed I've re-posted some of the more recent back-catalog episodes). Over time, I will add more of them. For long-time listeners, it's a chance to re-visit some of the older stuff from "back in the day". For newer listeners, it will be like a glut of new podcasts to check out. I also want to note that I've removed the audio for my previous episode (CRC #42) as the recording levels were all over the map and I didn't think the quality was up to snuff. Perhaps 5 or 6 years ago, it would have been okay, I suppose, but even in light of the cheap mixer and free recording software I use to assemble these 'casts, I think this podcast has come too far now and demands a higher level of quality. So, I may re-record that one at a future date. At that point, I'll re-post. Same for back-catalog items. The really good ones, I'll re-post. The ones that could use a little work will most likely be re-recorded and re-posted as a "reboot" episode. All in all, thank you all again for tuning in. Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2017! Now on to the bands ... If you've been a follower of this podcast since the beginning and you've clung to the belief that, against all probability, the thrash metal band, Slayer, would somehow make its presence felt at some point then your patience has finally been rewarded. And you should book your ticket to Vegas immediately. Taking a riff from the group's tune, "War Ensemble", "I Want You" was one of four Top-25 hits for Jez Willis and Tim Garbutt on Utah Saints' self-titled debut. The duo were at the pioneering edge of sampling, also grabbing a snippet of Kate Bush from her track Cloudbusting for the song "Something Good" and a soundbite from the inimitable Annie Lennox from her song "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)" for the track "What Can You Do For Me". Called "the first true Stadium House band" by Bill Drummond of The KLF, Utah Saints were one of the first rave acts to play live and one I had the good fortune to see on the same bill with The Shamen in the early 90s during the rave culture explosion. And let me tell you: it was quite a show ... probably. I first heard "Salvation" by The Hood sometime in 1989 while in college. A guy who lived down the hall from me had a version of it on an old mix tape. I really liked the track and was pleased as punch when the first of many Razormaid! discs from my nascent subscription showed up in the mail containing a mix of that song. It is a portion of that 10+ minute version that appears here. I would soon come across a movie soundtrack of the same name while sifting through record bins at a local indie shop. New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, The Hood, hip-hop producer extraordinaire Arthur Baker and others appeared on the album, so I purchased it. While I've listened to the song "Salvation" umpteen times over the years, I did not know much about the band or its members. To this day, I still don't. I spent the better part of an hour trying to find information on the group, but mostly found song credits and track listings. Eventually, I did find a tiny bit of info on a website called The Lost Turntable. The info was posted by an Arthur Baker and a John Hood respectively, both of whom I can only assume to be the real article. "the hood- is john hood, a legendary nyc party promoter-doorman,who is also quite a good writer. he was signed for a short time on the sire label and is active on the club scene in south beach, miami, florida" "Wow! Yeah, that The Hood track is indeed me: John Hood. (Thanks AB!) And I'm delighted to find it posted. In fact, till right now I never even had an MP3 of the song! So if no one minds, I'll post this, save this, and send this around. Nice to find Salvation!" If anyone knows anything more about The Hood, I would LOVE to get a one-sheet or press kit or bio on them. Speaking of bands I don't know much about, Gruesome Twosome would qualify as well. Sort of a one-off project for founders Samy Birnbach from Minimal Compact (aka Lord Solomon Pearbrook) and Norwegian producer Per Martinsen, who had been recording under the name Syamese, "Hallucination Generation" is the only official single from the group and was released in 1989. A cult classic in its own right, the song sort of bridges the gap between traditional industrial dance music and the bourgeoning New Beat music scene that was starting to take hold at the time. Birnbach and Martinsen would later collaborate with the likes of Bertrand Burgalat, Thrash from The Orb, Paul Kendall and Fortran 5 to eventually release a full-length album called Candy From Strangers, which was released in 1993. Birnbach currently releases material under the DJ Morpheus moniker, having once worked with Colin Newman from Wire for a project called Oracle, while Martinsen performs as Mental Overdrive. While it's probably not the best analogy as they employed very different musical styles, Ultravox is much like the band Genesis in the sense that they have two distinct timelines, led by two distinctly different front men. And much like one could argue Peter Gabriel represented the true vision for Genesis, there is no denying that Phil Collins took the band to massive commercial heights and is probably remembered more readily as the face of the group. Similarly, one could argue that while John Foxx may have been the driving force behind Ultravox during their formative years, it was Midge Ure, who took over after Foxx left for a solo career, that kept the band from imploding and pushed them further into the mainstream and to massive success in the UK. With 7 Top-10 albums and 17 Top-10 singles, U-Vox, like many other bands of the day, took their cue from the glam rock outfits that came before such as Neu! In fact, early on Ultravox was known as Ultravox! (with an exclamation point) in deference to Neu! The first album with the classic line-up of Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross would be the amazing Vienna, which marked a very different direction for the group. Produced by long-time Kraftwerk producer Conny Plank, the album included the title track, which would reach #2 in the UK and would be the highest charted song for the band. (John Lennon's "Woman" and "Shaddap You Face" by Joe Dolce would both keep the song from reaching #1). And while the 1982 album Quartet, produced by George Martin, would be the best-selling US album for U-Vox, the band would not again reach the level of critical success they found with Vienna. The song in this podcast is the 12" version of "We Came to Dance", the final single from Ultravox's sixth studio album, Quartet, released on April 18, 1983. The single reached #18 on the UK charts and was the last of seven consecutive top-20 singles for the band. This being the Christmas season, I would be derelict not to mention that Midge Ure also co-wrote (with Bob Geldof of Boomtown Rats fame) and produced the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. Last but not least, I want to mention "State Of The Nation" by New Order. Though it reached #1 on the UK Indie Singles Chart and #30 on the UK Singles chart in 1986, the song is probably not a favorite of the majority of New Order fans. I would wager if every NO devotee were to compile a list of his or her Top 10 songs, it would probably appear in less than 5% of those lists. Still, the track is a great one even if only for the fact that it's one of the few NO songs whose title actually appears within the lyrics and/or chorus of the song. As most die-hard fans know, the titles of most NO tunes have little or no relevance to the subject matter being discussed. "Shellshock", "Regret", "Touched By The Hand Of God" and "Confusion" are a few songs I can think of off the top of my head that go against that grain. While the song did not appear on the album, Brotherhood, which was released around this time, both the remix version appearing here and the B-side called "Shame Of The Nation", which was produced by John Robie, appear on the Substance compilation, released in 1987. That will do it for this epidsode. I've got my next podcast ready to record. As soon as I find some time, I'll do just that. Happy Listening!
THE WEED BUSINESS: Analysts are calling it the country’s "fastest-growing industry" and Arthur Frommer (godfather of the travel industry who founded the Frommer's guide) said “get ready for the era of marijuana tourism”. In the US, 8 states have legalized its recreational use and more than half of all US states permit it for medical purposes. In Dec, The New York Stock Exchange listed its first public marijuana company. Times are changing, so I sat down with Joe Dolce, author of “Brave New Weed” to explore the future of the weed business and its social impact. WHO IS JOE? Joe Dolce is a seasoned journalist who worked with Anna Wintour at Vogue, introduced Jamie Oliver to the US audience as the chief of Gourmet magazine and spent a week in Mexico trying to outdrink Anthony Bourdain. He has a treasure trove of stories spanning an impressive 20yr career as a journalist. For the last 3yrs, Joe travelled the globe researching the uncharted world of the cannabis industry. From legal states in the US, medical research in Israel, weed tourism in Colorado & the criminal justice system - Joe has dug deep into this topic. 5 THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: (1) His Journalist Background - stories of interviewing Hugh Hefner in the playboy mansion & Anna Wintour eating cheeseburgers at her desk. How his background in journalism got him onto this topic for his book. (2) History - Why has it been such a taboo subject, what is changing now, legalization vs decriminalization, positive & negative impact. (3) Current Landscape - what does the landscape look like right now? How are people like Snoop Dogg, Whoopi Goldberg & The Marley Family setting up to profit? (4) Future Growth of the Weed Business - comparing it to the beer business & wine country, big pharma, tobacco companies, investment, weed tourism & medical use. (5) Social impact - the US has 5% of the global population but 25% of its prisoners, what impact will legalization have on the criminal justice system? How will it impact people of color who are disproportionately impacted by minor drug offenses?
