This week Evan, Megan, and Dave take in the new Nick Frost-written-and-starring horror comedy GET AWAY (2:50), about a family that goes to a remote Swedish island for a holiday weekend, only to be trapped as a killer is on the loose. Zoinks! Blood and guts ensue! But do the laughs follow? DO THEY?!! Two-thirds of us felt one way, and one-third of us felt another way. Then we watch RED ROOMS (26:02), the French-Canadian drama about obsession (among other things) about the trial of a man accused of absolutely horrifying, grisley murders - all captured on video as snuff films (thankfully, the visuals of said snuff films make limited appearances, though the audio doesn't leave much mystery). However, the lead character, Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy) goes down the rabbit hole during the trial, and writer-director Pascal Plante doesn't lay out easy answers for the questions he poses. Finding My Fit"The primary goals of adolescence"“Fitting in, or gaining peer acceptance, is a primary objective of youth in the high school context and, for many adolescents, may be more important than academic goals.” (Crosnoe, 2011 Eccles & Roeser, 2011).Perceived belonging and the data students collect on it becomes the “source material” for important outcomes like dropout rates, academic performance, mental health issues, and how much control they have to make the changes they feel need to be made. We typically extrapolate data we took in in high school about how we fit in and where we belong and apply it to larger society, college, workforce, etc.It doesn’t matter if WE think they are connected or belong. Do THEY think that?Students that are low in social connectedness tended to think that “peers were in control of determining the criteria for which youth could fit in with certain social groups and that, in order to fit in, conformity is necessary.” Many of these kids are not interested in conformity but they are interested in belonging.Many kids get labeled or put into a group that they don’t feel is consistent with who they really are, or who they would choose to fit in with, if they could.Kids with higher amounts of social connectedness tend to feel more like others perceptions of them, and their ability to fit in, is in their control. They can draw people closer or push them away, with either little cost, or a confidence that they can find what they need elsewhere.If am considering making myself vulnerable by trying to make a connection, but I have a history of being rejected, then I may decide it’s not worth the risk. On this week's Bachelor recap, Marni and Chris discuss the women’s tell-all episode and Matt James facial hair. This season is proving to be a letdown in the love department. We can only hope the season finale will offer some kind of twist with just Bri, Michelle, and Rachael left in the running for the soon-to-be lackluster proposal from Matt. Not the girls, not the audience, and not Marni or Chris Gillis. And when you add that beard to his already weird kissing style it’s obvious that Matt may only be no more than a good-hearted f*c$boy. When Matt kisses the girls he does not close his eyes. And admits to not knowing he was supposed to. Wait.......What? Marni says that it displays his lack of emotional availability and will make it hard for him to find love with any of the girls this season. Data proves that relationships with bad kisses don’t last long. Bachelor Ladies Tell-All, or Do They? [14:56] The ladies got the opportunity to watch the episodes as they were shown to the audience. They were able to see why Chris calls his responses ‘surgical’ and Marni calls him the quintessential f*c$boy. While Serena said Matt has a certain way of making you feel like you are really special. Piper spilled her heart open and asked Matt to answer for repeating the same lines to all the ladies. Normally, at least one girl will call out the Bachelors for their experience but the ladies this season did nothing but praise Matt. Queen Victoria had a moment when she commented on Matt’s advice when she left the show, "I hope you do some self-reflection." Victoria said screw you buddy, but she was leaking all over the place. She is a hot mess. Be the person you want to attract. Marni shares that she was a bit ticked-off by the discussion about women being too sensitive. Truth is, women have been receiving this message for their whole lives. Everyone has feelings and everyone gets to feel their feelings. It's more about what you do with the feelings, do you manage them, and articulate them in a healthy way? If you are not emotionally available, if you have drama around you, or have your guard up you will attract guys who will do that to you or reinforce those beliefs. People can be mirrors for our emotional selves. Piper said she was falling in love with Matt but admits she was already in love with him. She says ever since she was young she has always played it cool. She had her guard up. If you think a guy doesn't notice that you have your guard up, well you are wrong. It's noticeable. Chris says Piper, maybe, fell in love with the idea of being in love. We all do it. There is no rule and every situation is different but you must remember that you are enough and you make the decision if the person is a fit for you. If that person isn't, even if he is hot, you decide if he is not enough. Are You in a Relationship with a Matt James Type? [34:07] No one wants to appear needy at the beginning of a relationship. We may let the other person drive while we are feeling people out. But exercise caution because it can quickly turn into a relationship where you don't ask for what you need. Chris uses Abigail’s style as an example. Marni suggests using this language when a guy suddenly goes cold; “Hey... I think we have fun and I like where this is going but I am kind of confused because it seems a little out of character for what we have been building together, and I want to make sure we are on the same page.” Don't wait and wonder about what is happening. If a guy starts to pull away, don't be disempowered. Ask the question and say it in a way that doesn't put him on the spot. Then you know how he feels and has the opportunity to respond. Don't make assumptions about where a relationship is going. Ask the question and be open to the consequences, even if it's painful. Life can throw a lot of hardships in our paths, which it seems only the mentally strong can withstand... Following tragic losses in her life, Amy Morin LCSW wrote a list to remind herself how to keep going. Shared on lifehack.org, the list went viral, then flooded Forbes. Like a beacon in the night, Amy's worldwide best-selling book, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, gives us all simple lessons in resiliency in a world where adversity can leave us feeling isolated.. Amy’s life was going along pretty well. But, when she was 22, her mother died suddenly of a brain aneurysm. Her mother was only in her early 50’s. Most people aren’t ready to lost their parents even if they pass away much older, but no one expects their parents to die that young. That’s just not supposed to happen! Amy was healing from that though. She was young in her career as a clinical social worker, was married and starting her life with her husband. But then, on the 3rd anniversary of her mother's death, her 26 year old husband died of a heart attack. What?!? As Amy put the pieces of her life together. She found a way to honor her young husband’s memory. Every year on his birthday, she would get together with his family and participate in life-affirming experiences. Sometimes they were adventurous trips, other times, they were more subdued, but they always made it fun and didn’t wallow in his loss. They found a way to see through the pain of the loss to celebrate life: his and theirs.Then, a few years later, Amy found love again and got remarried. She and her new husband were enjoying the early days of this marriage and looking forward to their life together. But then, tragedy struck yet again. This time, her new father-in-law was diagnosed with untreatable cancer. She was then faced with the anticipation of the loss of someone else she was close to – as well as the anticipation of having to help her new husband cope with the loss of his parent. The pain she, of course, knew all too well. This is when Amy decided she was really going to have to pull from all the mental strength she could find.Amy initially wrote the original list of “13 Things…” for herself. She speaks of doing it as a reminder to herself of how to successfully cope. She was working as a therapist and was good at helping others find their mental strength, but she discovered that focusing on what to do worked for a while, but she found “not so healthy” habits creeping in to sabotage her. The list helped her understand that she would/could survive these losses. Then, she realized others might benefit from the list and this is when the list took on a life of its’ own. She posted the article on Lifehack.org (you can read it here ). The list went viral within a few hours. The traffic generated from the article shut the page down! It was then re-posted on several other sites, including Forbes.com where it set a record at over 10 million views! To this day, it is still one of their most viral posts.It was after all this web attention, that Amy was approached by Harper Collins publishing house and asked to turn the list into a book. So, that’s exactly what she did. The book went on to become a bestseller. I also subscribe to this thinking. One of my favorite things to work on with my clients is helping them build their mental strengths, or resiliency traits. We are all born with part of our personality predetermined by our genetics. How the other part of our personality developed is thought to be determined by how we are nurtured. As we are growing up, we receive certain messages about how we should or shouldn’t deal with stress, upset, disappointment, as well as love, happiness and all the rest of our emotions. Those messages are internalized and stored as fact, even if they are not in our best interest. For instance, I learned as a child that when I am stressed out I should eat to make myself feel better, which led to a struggle with weight as an adult due to my engagement int his self-soothing behavior. I've had to learn to fight against what fact that although not true, nor in my best interest.Amy Morin’s “13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do” takes a refreshing spin on how to overcome struggle and, in her case, multiple losses. Amy’s list resonates with many of us I believe because collectively we have been focusing on what “to do” or what we “should do”. When we don’t “do” what we are “supposed to do to be healthy”, we end up feeling like a failure. However, Amy’s list focuses on “what not to do”. Such a different way of thinking! I say this because when we twist up, say, #11. “They don’t fear time alone” into the “You should do this” type of list, it becomes “They are comfortable being alone”. Somehow not fearing something feels much different than “you should be comfortable” with something. That way of thinking can set many people up for failure. I believe if we re-wrote the list from the “what to do” perspective, it would start to sound like “Mentally strong people just do more then you when you are tired of trying”. Not very empowering.Strengthening those emotional muscles to help you become stranger and more resilient takes active work. I’ll leave you with this. I've never liked it much, It's much too sweet for me, but my grandmother liked it. I prefer a glass or two of Jack Daniels or single malt whiskey. Mice pies are small round pastry tarts filled with mincemeat (carne picada). I don't like them, but I love Christmas pudding. You would probably find mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake in a Christmas hamper. A hamper is a cesta - Christmas hamper - cesta de navidad. Companies in the UK used to give Christmas hampers to their employees when I lived their, but with the recession I'm not sure how many companies still do this. many companies probably can't afford it. In the confusing words exercise you could find a lot of the answers from the prepositions that go together with the words. Try to remember the prepositions that go with words. For example, insist - He insisted ON seeing the manager. Accustomed TO - He's not accustomed to driving on the right hand side of the road. To be familiar WITH someone or something - Are you familiar with the law? To be aware OF - Are you aware of the rules? To be used TO something - Are you used to the food? Instead of, apart from etc. If you make an announcement, you say something publicly. I have an announcement to make. We're getting married. The Prime Minister made an announcement on TV last night. How do you say warning? - A warning is una advertencia. Let this be a warning - que esto sirva de advertencia It happened without warning - sin previo aviso Advice is consejo and it's an uncountable noun so we say a piece of advice or some advice. Back in the 1980's I suppose our office alone employed over 600 people, and there must have been around 1,000 at the party. It usually took place on Friday evening. This meant that no work was done after lunch, because lunch would be in the pub! We'd start drinking about 1pm and after 3 or 4 drinks, we'd get on the train to the centre of London or take the coach provided by the firm. The venue was a huge theatre and dance hall in the Strand in the centre of London, but we wouldn't go straight there. Each department generally went with their workmates to a pub nearby for more drinks. I remember that there were mostly men at the 'pre-party' drink. Maybe the girls were getting ready and putting on evening dresses and make up. There was a special atmosphere in the pubs at Christmas time. People in London actually spoke to each other and were friendly. They lost their English coldness and stuffiness. When we finally arrived at the party most of us were drunk, and very hungry. The food was always good, but I mainly remember the music and the incredible amount of alcohol everyone consumed. I don't remember anyone being sober. Boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives were banned from the event, and it was common for employees to 'pair-up' for a kiss and a dance for the evening. Things were a little crazy. Only once a year, at Christmas time, 1,000 office workers stopped being boring and English and actually enjoyed themselves, they let their hair down and went a bit wild! Every year, in the middle of ..............December, we would have a Christmas party, paid for by the .............company. They had a lot of ............money. Back in the 1980's I suppose our office alone employed over 600 ............people, and there must have been around 1,000 at the party. It usually took place on Friday ..............evening. This meant that no work was done after .............lunch, because lunch would be in the ...........pub! We'd start ............drinking about 1pm and after 3 or 4 drinks, we'd get on the .............train to the centre of London or take the ..............coach provided by the firm. The venue was a huge theatre and dance hall in the Strand in the centre of ..........London, but we wouldn't go straight there. Each department generally went with their............ workmates to a pub nearby for more ............drinks. I remember that there were mostly .........men at the 'pre-party' drink. Maybe the girls were getting ready and putting on evening .........dresses and .........make up. There was a special ..........atmosphere in the pubs at Christmas time. People actually spoke to each other and were ............friendly. They lost their English coldness and stuffiness. When we finally arrived at the party most of us were ..........drunk, and very ..........hungry. The food was always .........good, but I mainly remember the ........music and the incredible amount of ...........alcohol everyone consumed. I don't remember anyone being ...........sober. Boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and ..........wives were ...........banned from the event, and it was common for employees to 'pair-up' for a ........kiss and a ........dance for the evening. Things were a little .........crazy. Only once a year, at Christmas time, 1,000 office workers stopped being ...........boring and English and actually enjoyed themselves, let their hair ...........down and went a bit ...........wild!
