Welcome to the Woman in Tech Series from the Global Tech Leaders Podcast. Today we are speaking to Christine Spang who is the co-founder and Chief Technical Officer at Nylas. She has had an illustrious career in the corporate world and comes from a development background, she attended MIT and grew out from there creating products. We kick off by asking Christine what drove her to get into becoming a developer, its underserved by women, and what sparked her interest to choose this journey. Born in Canada and her folks were Norweighen immigrants. Her grandmother had a mini farm, where they would farm and build things. She remembers helping her folks build a barn on her grandparent's farm. She was really good at Math at school and moved up north really young. She was into music at her public school and played the french horn and was in the marching band. Always loved reading and got lost in books, her Dad would blast Oprah music. Grew up in the suburbs, there wasn't much to do, so games and books allowed her to explore. That led her to online text-based games and story building. Then she started learning about programming and discovered the world of open-source. Which blew her mind. Came across a blog, joined this group and became obsessed with open source which led to her attending MIT. That's when she knew she wanted to be a software engineer. We then ask Christine, why she thinks there is such a gap in developers in today's society with our demands and which subjects would she advise those who feel a fit for this. Cultivating a mindset of curiosity and questioning things. People should aspire to create an environment where people can choose to get into something without barriers. We need the builders of modern software to represent people all over the world. Try and treat people the same, and support the curiosity of little girls and little boys. Next, we ask Christine if she has experienced bias in her career and if so, what is the one thing she would change? She has trained her mind to believe everyone has good intentions. When people are more comfortable working from home, forcefully calling them in the office is micromanaging. Before having a workspace, an organization needs to know about the intent behind it.He feels that a hybrid workplace will provide better performance by offering better talent from every corner of the world. For high performing teams, hybrid work is necessary. As long as the work is getting done, people should have the freedom to arrange their day's schedule. This calls for a more output-focused mindset. He explains that there is a difference between work and office.You can have a smaller workspace for the office people to interact.Giving the employees the freedom and responsibility of structuring their routine is going to retain them. For this purpose, an organization needs to have the value of trust.Shift in the compensation policies:There is going to be a real shift in the compensation policies of different companies. Ryan talks about companies like Microsoft, Twitter, and his company where they choose to give their people the option and the choice. This will pave the way towards better employee retention. According to him, people are craving for more flexibility. Many talents might leave their organizations if the hybrid model is changed. Compensation takes time to shift. It is important to understand that compensation is not the cost of living, but the cost of labour. It is the market rate for the job you do and the location you do it in. There might be a shortage of jobs in a location. But if there is a high demand for the skill set, the pay will increase based on that supply and demand curve. Ryan personally takes the time to explain compensation to the employees. They attempt to bring equality in terms of compensation. Organizations should inform the employees in higher pay scales when they will not be receiving a raise for a specific time period. Transparency makes these tasks seamless.Advice to young HR professionals:Ryan gives a valuable piece of advice to the young HR professionals. It does not matter where you come from or which school you went to, if you work hard, you will definitely achieve success. Moreover, be hungry to learn and grow. If you are working in a startup, make yourself comfortable with the ambiguities that will accompany it. You have to be motivated and passionate about working in a startup.Ryan mentions that he is a lover of travelling. Neo4j, a provider of graph database platform for organizations, has announced its raise of $325 million in a Series F round led by Eurazeo, at a valuation of $2 billion. According to the company, this transaction represents the largest investment in any private database firm. KeepTruckin, a unicorn company helping trucking companies in fleet management to increase their productivity, safety, and efficiency, has netted $190M in Series E funding. This round raises its valuation from a previously achieved billion to $2.3B. The proceeds will be used to scale its engineering team.Bulgarian-based Vitosha Venture Partners has launched its €26 million ($30 million) fund to invest in about 100 early to growth-stage companies based in or related to Bulgaria, as reports. The amount would range from low to up to a million.Nylas, a communications API (Application Programming Interface) platform, has raised $120M in a Series C funding round led by Tiger Global Management. The new funds will be used to continue extending the types of APIs it offers, emphasizing AI and associated technologies to bring more automation into workflows rather than merely productivity apps.Beamery, a digital recruitment service, has raised $138 million in a Series C funding round led by Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board's Teachers' Innovation Platform (TIP). Other participants include strategic investors who are also users of Beamery: M12, Workday Ventures, Accenture Ventures, EQT Ventures, and Index Ventures.Claroty, an industrial cybersecurity startup, has raised $140M in a Series D funding round co-led by Bessemer and 40 North. According to its CEO, the company is planning to go public.Video chat startup Twine has announced its raise of $3.3M in venture funding from Moment Ventures. This takes its total seed funding raised to $4.7M. Unit is a platform developer that lets third-party companies incorporate financial services into their operations. A token sale has previously raised about half a million dollars to help fund early development. The funds will go into the company's next phase of expansion, its month-to-month growth rate is 30%, and it says it's certain it can at least maintain that, which will include hiring a large number of people to speed up product development.Akur8, a SaaS insurtech platform, has raised $30 million in a Series B funding round led by an undisclosed investor. This makes the total amount of money raised to $42 million.  Actuaries and pricing teams use Akur8 to make faster insurance pricing decisions.Eqtble, a platform that provides HR teams with detailed analytics, has raised $2.7 million in its seed round funding from Initialized Capital. Several actions proved key as Waifa Chau advanced from financial planning and analysis (FP&A) roles to chief financial officer positions. Collaborating with other functions, gaining an in-depth understanding of the overall business, and helping his colleagues understand how FP&A benefits an organization have driven his success, says Chau, currently CFO with Nylas, Inc., a provider of productivity infrastructure solutions for software.  Cross-functional collaboration helps in gaining an understanding of a company's overall business, Chau says. While working at Gap Inc., the company behind Gap, Banana Republic, and other apparel brands, Chau focused on driving higher gross margins—key in the retail industry. Chau's curiosity about the business also helped him propel his career forward, he says. He spent about two years in a merchandising role at Gap, during which he gained a better understanding of the intricacies of operations. Often, employees in other parts of an organization assume FP&A's primary role is to tell them when they're over or under budget, Chau says. He tried to show how a strong FP&A partner tries to understand their performance so the business can better prepare for the future. After about seven years at Gap, Inc., Chau moved to an FP&A role at Walmart.com. In an ecommerce organization, there were “different levers to pull,” he says. For instance, along with analyzing gross margins, he reviewed margins on grocery delivery apps. Building on his success in FP&A, Chau set a new goal: establishing a finance team from the ground up. He joined BirdEye, a marketing platform, as vice president, finance, and advanced to CFO. Among other accomplishments, he structured the accounting and FP&A functions and determined how finance would interact with other functions. At Nylas, Chau again is leveraging his experience to propel himself forward and establish the finance function, this time for a slightly younger and small company.

After moving west to help out a friend turned into working at Dropbox and Nest he, in 2014, faced the decision between working for another startup darling or venturing out on his own. He scratched the itch that never left him, email, and set out on his own path. Nylas is built on the idea that email can become the “database of your life” and that we already use email so much, we should find a way to build a better platform, no matter how many startups want to kill it. Using open-source tooling, Nylas allows developers to build an unlimited amount of new features on the platform, and it’s taken off within the developer community; they’ve reached 20,000 stars on GitHub, ranking them 74th across GitHub’s 3.4 million projects.
