Your Glucose Levels in Menopause with the Glucose Goddess On this episode I talk with the Glucose Goddess herself about exactly what you can do. Spoiler alert, you have something on your kitchen or pantry shelf right now that could reduce your blood sugar levels right now. Significantly. My Guest: Jessie Inchauspé is a French biochemist and New York Times bestselling author. Questions We Answer in This Episode: When did you realize blood sugar was going to be your focus? What's the importance of glucose levels, or blood sugar, for our listeners? For women in midlife who become more sensitive to carbohydrates and less insulin sensitive with hormonal changes, what does that mean? Can you tie inflammation to glucose, since it is “unseen” and hard to sometimes grasp the impact of inflammation? Since doing the research for your book, in what ways have your own habits changed? What are 3 things you really want this book to do? What are some bad recommendations that you hear regarding blood sugar levels? [You've made it so simple] Why do you think we find it so hard to change even when we learn what to do? What is your method for studying science? What is considered a “good study” – something that makes it to the book, or to your flourishing Instagram channel? We know that beyond food other things impact our blood sugar, have you studied certain stressors or exercise in combination with food? Can you share any studies regarding sweet taste, even if it isn't sugar, and the effects of blood sugar? [Say use of stevia, or a piece of sugar-free gum] What are three things a listener could do today as she goes about her routine that wouldn't turn their world upside down, but could have a significant impact on improving blood sugar [and inflammation]? Blood sugar regulation isn't just for a select few; it's a universal key to health, vitality, and the enjoyment of life. As humans thriving in our beautifully complex world, our goal is to be realistic, and not restrict ourselves.Today, we're revisiting conversations with previous guests who've shared invaluable tools on how to maintain this crucial balance, helping us lead a healthier, more energetic life. The concept is simple, but the effects are profound; it all comes down to managing your blood sugar levels. Whether it's quinoa or cake, the breakdown of any carbohydrate we consume produces glucose – our primary energy source. The trick is to balance our blood sugar levels, not too high and not too low, to avoid those insulin spikes and crashes. This balance allows for consistent energy and effective fat burn throughout the day. But how do we achieve this balance? It's not about eating less or skipping meals. Rather, it's about focusing on the "#fab4" in each meal – fat, protein, fiber, and greens. This approach helps to naturally stabilize our blood sugar, offering us the gift of vitality and wellbeing. On this roundtable journey, we draw insights from previous episodes featuring brilliant minds like:• Dr. Casey Means: Level Up your Metabolic Health #103• Dr. Ben Bikman: How to Fight Chronic Illness at its Source #83• Dr. Mariza Snyder: Eating to Support Your Hormones and Blood Sugar #195• Dr. Lauren Kelley-Chew: How to use a CGM to Master your Metabolic Health #217• Jessie Inchauspe: Balance Your Blood Sugar, Feel Your Best #144 and Join the Glucose Revolution & Hack Your Blood Sugar #176We also cover…00:02:00 — Why Insulin Is the Metabolic Boss (Dr. Ben Bilkman)• Introduction to blood sugar• What is insulin and why is it produced?• Insulin's role in the brain and brain disorders00:06:00 — Healthy Levels & Development of Insulin Resistance (Dr. Casey Means) • Why we need to keep insulin in a narrow range• How insulin resistance happens• How to become metabolically flexible• Using fat versus glucose for energy consumption• How your gut microbiome influences how your body breaks down carbohydrates00:10:00 — How to Identify if Our Insulin Levels Are Off (Dr. Lauren Kelley-Chew) • Oatmeal isn't as good for you as you think• Symptoms of blood sugar drops• Recognizing the impacts of sugar on focus and retention• Smart food choices to feel more satisfied and balanced throughout the day• Using Levels to understand how your food is impacting blood sugar00:19:00 — Insulin's Role in PCOS (Dr. Ben Bilkman)• Why insulin inhibits ovulation for
Podcast DescriptionIn the current industrial food environment, most of the foods that are marketed to us are pretty far removed from whole foods. Recent research indicates that over 70% of the food supply in the U.S. is ultra-processed. Many ultra-processed foods (UPFs) contain little fiber and are high in added sugars, meaning they are rapidly digested, and cause blood glucose levels to rise quickly. Our ancient brains and bodies are struggling to catch up with this new food environment, filled with modern conveniences that we love the taste of. But the impact of a diet high in UPFs goes beyond negative physical health outcomes such as a heightened risk of diabetes, obesity, and cancer. It may also have a significant impact on the health of your brain. In today's episode, I explore two ways we can reduce our consumption of UPFs to improve blood glucose management, reduce cravings, and lower the risk of disease. To read the full show notes, click here.References Join my email list here so you're first in line for the latest content.Find out more about “The Glucose Goddess Method” (2023) and “Glucose Revolution” (2022) by Jessie InchauspéLearn more about “Obesity Code” by Dr.Jason FungAudio Stamps03:10 - We discover why you don't need to be diabetic or pre-diabetic for blood sugar management to be a concern for you.05:32 - We find out how reducing processed foods in our diet can help to bring down insulin levels.09:12 - Dr. Rentea introduces her first strategy for eating less processed food.11:41 - Dr. Rentea talks about her second strategy for eating less processed food.12:15 - We hear some suggested resources to support you with blood glucose management.13:33 - Dr. Rentea tells us why we should resist the urge to do a radical overhaul.Quotes4:19 - “One of the best ways that I know to help people with this is to help them more toward an unprocessed diet.”7:42 - “We are this ancient brain and body, but we're in this really modern world. CAUTION: The advice in this episode may not be suitable for anyone with an eating disorder. If you have an existing health condition or are taking medication, always consult your healthcare practitioner before making changes to your diet.My guest this week believes that how you feel right now is directly linked to your blood-sugar level. And if you want to feel better than you do right now, you don't necessarily need to change what you eat – just how.Jessie Inchauspé is a French biochemist and author, whose first book, Glucose Revolution, spoke to the life-changing power of balancing your blood-sugar and her latest book, The Glucose Goddess Method sets out a four-week, four-step plan to help you do just that. Before writing The Glucose Goddess Method, Jessie recruited 2,700 volunteers through social media to test her programme. The results are quite astounding: 70 percent of those who followed her plan for four weeks reported better energy; 90 percent had reduced cravings; 40 percent of the participants with type-2 diabetes reduced their diabetes markers. Ninety-nine percent of those who took part said they were impressed enough to continue the habits for life.Jessie believes blood sugar is the one metric that has the most effects in the body, from balancing hormones to improving energy, mood, immunity, skin, sleep, ageing, weight and much more. During this conversation, she breaks down the science of exactly what glucose is, how it's used by the body, and why an excess of sugary or starchy foods can cause a blood-glucose spike. She explains why glucose is our body's favourite energy source, used by every cell, but that too many spikes, too often, will lead to adverse health effects.Realising that very many of us struggle with sticking to the ‘best' or ‘right' diet, Jessie wanted to find ways that we could all enjoy the foods we love, without suffering spikes. By adopting her four ways of eating – one at a time, bit by bit – you can minimise glucose spikes and, in turn, the short and longer-term health issues they create.Jessie is a really fantastic communicator who is able to simplify complex science and give you actionable information that you can implement immediately. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Rob: Hi Doc, me again. Sorry forgot to ask about my blood sugar. I've been wearing a CGM for almost 2 months now and I was shocked how I was basically pre-diabetic. Fasting glucose was about 120 and it could spike all the way up to 180 after eating my prep meal which could involve something like lentils, sweet potato and peas + olive oil. I have gone to a completely starch free diet where I'm eating plenty of cruciferous veg, pulses. 20g+ protein in every meal and healthy fats. No fruits, grains or starches such as sweet potato. I do have a cheat meal per week and anytime I try to add a starch, my blood glucose spikes again. Am I supposed to be on a starch free diet forever? Why is my fasting glucose still around over 100 when I'm not eating any starches? This is so confusing. Bearing in mind that I already get my 10k steps and I'm generally moving after my meals (washing dishes). Please help, I'm so lost. Anonymous: Hello, I'm 38 years old and my Dexa Scan came back with upsetting results. I have -2.0 T score in my spine which is significantly decreased from 2 years ago. I am wondering if you know anything about CalZbone (Cissus quadrangularis) supplement or IMD supplements (which have an Oseto product containing this). I am worried about putting things into my body if I don't know about any potential side effects, especially long term. At the same time i'm working on my nutririon, i'm working with an endocrinologist for on my hormones and thyroid (which have been a mess for years), i'm also working on increasing the amount of calcium in my diet and making sure I have adequate Vitamin D and K. Any feedback about CalZbone, or about suggestions to make sure I can reverse this bone loss would be wonderful. Also, your amazing and use many of your supplements daily including DNS, Adrenal Soothe and Thyroid Support. Thank you for all you do! Casey: Hello I tried to submit a question and it keeps rejecting my submission so I was hoping I could send it here! Thank you so much for anything you can do to help. Here is my question: Hi there! Do you have any recommendations for chalazion cysts in the eye? My poor mama keeps getting them and they're doing repeat surgeries monthly and putting her on antibiotics each time and just say it's part of life now which has to be bs. I'm going to sign her up to be a client with you but hoping there was something she can do in the meantime! Thank you for all you do! Mary: After reading and listening to all of your info on hair loss, trying to get to the root cause of mine (all over scalp thinning). In your experience, is it possible to experience hair loss after adding T3 medication (low, at 5 mg)? It does say it's a potential side-effect. I was already on NP thyroid 90 mg. with TSH of 2.3, FT3 of 2.7, FT4 of .9, TPO 11, TGA
Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Jennifer: Hi Dr Cabral, love your work! Two questions for you. I have been experience chronic pain and other symptoms in my vaginal/bladder area. I have taken lots of rounds of antibiotics with no relief. First question, from research there are a couple doctors treating what they call embedded infections, where the bacteria is not detectable on a culture because it has embedded itself in the bladder wall-they treat this with years of antibiotics. What are your thoughts on that? Second question, I do always culture strep b in my bladder-despite taking several rounds that “should” have treated it. I'm sure it's colonized in my bladder and not just a contaminated catch-because it always cultures it and by this point I've perfected the clean mid stream catch. I have ordered the stool sample test and waiting on that now. What I'm wondering is will be CBO protocol address the strep b in my bladder and vaginal area, and will it help with yeast or bacteria overgrowth in my vagina. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Eric: Hello Dr Cabral, I have a question regarding my mother in law. She had the sleeve weight loss procedure, now years later from complications she is having her entire stomach cut out leaving her with around 5%. Her gut health is HORRIFIC, my question is can she do a CBO or parasite protocol with 5% of a stomach? She will have an extremely restricted diet in quantity, obviously, but also in what she can eat. Thanks so much for all you do! Morgan: Hey Dr Cabral, I am having a Re occurring issue when sleeping where I fall asleep and wake up 1-2 hours later automatically with intense acid reflux and can't get through the feeling and back to sleep. What do you recommend on getting through this or eliminating certain foods or adding certain ones. Thank you! Morgan Amanda: Hi Dr. Cabral! Thank you so much for your incredible work, I felt so alone on my health journey before I found your story. I was wondering if you've ever worked with someone with linear morphoea - I have morphoea en coup de sabre diagnosed by a dermatologist when I was around 14. He gave me topical steroids and it lightened up the area and seemed to make it more narrow, and it's been years since I've used the cream. I was wondering if you've ever seen it completely reversed? I've been working to heal my gut the last 2 years, I've done the CBO and Parasite Protocols, I was just wondering if there's anything else I should be looking into? I was a C section baby and was prescribed antibiotics for many years for sinus infections every winter (fellow east coaster). I also took ibuprofen every day of second grade for headaches. I believe my triggering events in 2016 were an infection and the terminal diagnosis of my mother with liver cirrhosis. It was a painful and very stressful 5 more years before she passed away. I have been working very hard to heal and appreciate any advice you have! Jenna: Have you read the book called Glucose Revolution yet? It's pretty new and the author Jesse Inchauspe has been interviewed on dozens of health podcasts. I'm reading the book now and find it fascinating and was wondering if you would consider doing a book review on it. Anonymous: Hi, dr. Cabral.. I was checking the ingredients of your liquid melatonin and am confused.. If I saw these ingredients in a supplement here in a pharmacy I would choose not to take it.. It contains xantham gum which you said is not good? I'm not sure about potassium sorbate..? I usually stay away from products with citric acid..? And is this a natural organic stevia extract?
