Send Claire a message!In Episode 96 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, sports dietitian Brooke Czarnecki of Intentful Nutrition joins me on the pod to help me answer a listener question. This person asked to learn more about organic foods as a runner, and also mentioned that she tries to minimize processed foods surrounding her runs. This inspired me to do an episode on organic versus conventional foods and “processed” versus “unprocessed” foods for athletes. I added a quick GMO chat at the end because it's relevant to this discussion. There's so much confusion, fear-mongering, and extremism when it comes to making nutrition decisions, especially regarding organic, “processed” (in quotes because it's not clearly defined) and GMO foods. For example, there is a widespread belief that if something is labeled organic or non-GMO, it must be nutritionally superior. But that's not true. In reality, this conversation is nuanced and complicated, and cannot be approached with the black-and-white way of thinking that so many people in the health and wellness space love to adopt. Brooke and I did our best to hit the main points, though there are some gaps in what we cover (especially on GMO foods). We define some key terms, differentiate between opinion and science (while throwing plenty of our own opinions in the mix), and talk about how all of this applies to you, as an athlete, in your everyday eating and performance nutrition.Our overarching message is that the right decision is the one that works best for you. If you want to buy organic, minimally processed, non-GMO foods and products, go for it. AND... There's s no conclusive evidence that organic food is healthier than conventional food. Highly processed foods, including sports nutrition products, have a place in an overall balanced diet, if you want to include them (most endurance athletes need to). Current evidence does not universally support GMO foods as harmful. YOU get to choose how you want to eat. We're just here to tell you that you don't HAVE to buy organic and swear off all “processed” non-GMO foods to be a healthy, worthy human and athlete. They have put a Hamburger with French fries, chicken nuggets from Mc Donald for 4 month outside in the subtropical climate of Puerto Rico. After 4 month still the food was there, it was just only dried; no insect had touched it… This means there are so much chemicals inside of the food from Mac Donald that even insects are running away from such poison food. It is well known that KFC is putting arsenic inside of the chicken because of the danger of salmonellae … still this should be food. And this is mainly true for all these fast food chains restaurants…They are putting so much chemicals inside the food as necessary, to keep the food fresh for a long time and that the food is delicious and addicted… The combination of white sugar, sweet- acid, cheap oil, gluten, chemicals… makes the food addicted, for instance: Ketchup, mayonnaise, French fries, Pizza, Tarts, Apply pie, Potatoes chips, hot dog …If we go farer and look on the beverages that the fast food chains restaurants serve like: sodas, Coca Cola, coffee, beer … then for sure fast food chains restaurants are making the people ill…. A test had proved that children which eating regularly food from the fast food chains are worse in the school than children who don't go to the fast food restaurants… Fast food chain restaurants makes the people fat and causes Obesity, Diabetes, Cancer, heart attack….We don't need to go to the fast food chains restaurants, they are even not cheap… Small restaurants with less dishes are normally much more delicious and healthy. Still we have the problem that every cheap restaurant like to save money on the ingredients. This means they cook with cheap oil, using white sugar, ketchup, mayonnaise, white flour… In Thailand they have found out that the cheap Thai Food makes you fat and ill…. In the USA is a law, that protects the Pharmaceutic industry, when they produce heavy poison medicaments that kills people, nobody can make lawsuit against them… Obama made it worse that today the food producer can produce, GMO Food, irradiation Food, or put as much pesticides and other poison inside the food without that they have to tell you what is inside… and a lawsuit is quite impossible to win against the food producer. In veggie burgers for instant, they found even rat meat…. And in Europe it is not so, they have to tell you what is inside…. For instance for the beer, they have to describe that the beer is chemical like in the USA, or GMO food, irradiation Food has to be labeled … In Europe you can't sell such awful food… because the people are much more aware it. Traditional GMO foods have a gene from another species transferred into that plant, but we now have have GMO 2.0, which utilizes the new gene editing tools to knock out genes or gut the genome in a place or two and hoping that when the thing gets reattached, it either adds what you want in or leaves out what you want and doesn't bring anything in extra that you don't want. This involves a lot of wishful thinking and obviously a lot could go wrong. The biotech industry has been licking its wounds because the movement to limit and ban GMO foods has been successful at informing consumers, and doctors that it is not safe that we have been able to contain it to 12 genetically engineered food crops as opposed to Monsanto's stated goal by this time to have 100% of all commercial seeds genetically engineered and patented. What's even scarier is that it used to take a long period of time and was expensive to genetically engineer foods, but now you can buy a gene editing kit from Amazon for a few thousand dollars and create your own GMO every day. 9:41 Monsanto convinced the White House that GMOs were safe and that GMOs were going to increase US exports and domination by the US in world food trade and they should be allowed on the market. Monsanto were able to get a former attorney of theirs--Michael Taylor--into the FDA to create a pro GMO policy.
