With a career spanning over four decades, Steve Earle has proven himself a master storyteller and one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. In 1986, his record Guitar Town, was released to wide-spread critical acclaim, shooting to number one on the country charts, and is today, regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. While he first won an audience as a country artist, it didn't take long for him to demonstrate that designation was too narrow for him. His rough neck poetics, outspoken and unapologetic lyrical stance, and literate yet down to earth musings, have captivated audiences across genres, with his music running the gamut from country, bluegrass, and folk to the blues, roots, and rock. With 22 studio albums under his belt, he has found room for both personal and the political, often writing about the stuff of everyday life and the forces that shape and define our existence. Some of his most notable releases including his commercial breakthrough Copperhead Road (1988), and Grammy Award winning records The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009). The versatility in his discography, the strength of his work, and consistent critical acclaim has helped Earle attract a loyal following, who are more than happy to continue following his stylistic evolution. Cut from the same cloth as legendary folk singer-songwriters like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell, Zandi Holup's raw brand of original folk country flourishes through raw unfiltered storytelling reminiscent of Dolly Parton and emphasized by her emotive vocals. Her edgy, deeply emotional lyrics and unique voice set her apart. She sings about the good, the bad, and the ugly. Her music is a voice for the unheard. A Grassroots following placed her on the map as snippets of demos and unreleased songs resonated across social media in increasing numbers. Her first release, “Wait for You,” sat at No. 1 on the all-genre Spotify Fresh Finds playlist, amassing over a million streams with no promotion outside of her TikTok following. Named a 2023 Artist to Watch by The Nashville Briefing, Holup signed a publishing deal with Arthouse Entertainment and TurnTable Music in partnership with Universal Music Publishing, and a record deal with Big Loud Records in 2023. Join us, as we talk with West Texas Singer/Songwriter Seth Ward and dive into the man, the myth and the legend that is Steve Earle and his debut album that started it all, Guitar Town.

Adam, Andy, and Travis kick off another season of the music podcast! This time around, we're talking about music and drug intake legend Steve Earle.
Fredrik och Ulf har varit på en trevlig gitarrmässa i Göteborg. Fölster gräver djupare i ämnet pure nickel strängar. En mycket underhållande pedal från Beetronics; Seabee är fokus i veckans pryl. I detta avsnitt: Nordin, Jakobsson, Björk, Fender, Gibson, Fredholm, Sound of Silence, Nordland, Huima, Marshall, Homesick Mac, Universal Audio, Beetronics, Pearse, Tom Andersson, JJ, Suhr, Ernie Ball Music Man, Matchless, Kauer, Fred Ash, Guitar Town, Montys, Klang i Bygget, Zematis, Collings, Kumerle, Zuta, SoundSprinkler, Moodysounds, GuitarMakers Stockholm, D'Addario.
This often overlooked and underappreciated live record marks the conclusion of this important phase of Steve Earle's career that began with Guitar Town. Some people say his voice sounds "rough" on this one, as if that's a bad thing. Anyway, sit back and read up on the Kanehsatà:ke Resistance (aka Oka Crisis), because it's 1990 and we're heading up to Canada.
The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Racine County; https://bit.ly/3nZOask The Cabin is also presented by WCA's Group Health Trust; serving local governments and school districts, the WCA Group Health Trust partners closely with members to fulfill their employee health benefit obligations in a fiscally responsible manner. Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3JMizCX Campfire Conversation: Cari Greving from Real Racine joins Eric and Ana and discuss the cities, towns, notable landmarks, historic sites, and unique features across the “262” area. The inventions, industrial heritage and redevelopments of Kenosha and Racine began the discussion. Topics ranged from Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural marvels in Racine, including Wingspread, to museums and lighthouses along the Lake Michigan shores. Ana got the update on the Peeps Competition at the Racine Art Museum. We moved inland to discuss unique places to visit including the Mars Cheese Castle and the Bong Recreation Area. The conversation continued to cover Burlington – in part for chocolate and their famous “Liar's Club” - and the nearby towns of Waterford and Rochester. From there, we worked clockwise into Walworth County with the draw of Lake Geneva and the incredible beauty and bevy of things to do and see around Geneva Lake, the ski hills at Alpine Valley and Grand Geneva, Elkhorn and the productive farms, orchards, and breweries nearby. The East Troy Railroad, which runs on the original interurban line that extended into Milwaukee, still runs to Mukwonago in Waukesha County and it's a great experience for kids and grown-ups alike. We then proceeded to cover Waukesha County, which combines dynamic cities and suburbs with the natural appeal of Kettle Moraine and numerous glacial lakes. Waukesha itself is vibrant and is getting increasingly known as “Guitar Town” since Les Paul, inventor of the electric guitar and multi-track recording, hailed from Waukesha. You can enjoy everything from history at Old World Wisconsin in Eagle to professional baseball with the Lake Country Dock Hounds in Oconomowoc. The 262 also covers areas north into Washington County, including Hartford with its automotive history, museums, and architecture; West Bend with its appliance manufacturing history and popular downtown; and Holy Hill, a national shrine that draws people from around the world. Finally, we head east into Ozaukee County, from Mequon up through Port Washington and Cedarburg. The shoreline of Lake Michigan north of Milwaukee's 414 area is quite different from south of Milwaukee, and we discuss how – and why. The accessible parklands along Lake Michigan in Ozaukee County include Lion's Den Gorge County Park and Harrington Beach State Park. Port Washington itself is a charming town with a New England feel, famous for fishing and its marine, lighthouses, and more. All these areas offer great history, museums, breweries, wineries, and unique spots to enjoy. We list and cover many of them by topic towards the end of the conversation, spreading the love all around “the 262.” Inside SponsorsBest Western: https://bit.ly/3zCCK3fMarshfield Clinic; All of Us Research Program; https://bit.ly/3Wj6pYj

This episode features Steve Earle, who's been a frequent visitor to Australia since the late 80s when he was riding high in the charts with his third album Copperhead Road. Earl didn't release his debut album Guitar Town until he was 27 years old, but he'd already established himself as a noted songwriter in Nashville. By the end of 2022, Steve Earle had released 21 studio albums, many with his long standing band The Dukes. He's also a published author, has appeared in the TV series The Wire, has produced an album by Joan Baez, and also been involved in several stage plays. He's also released tribute albums to some of his key influences, such as Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Jerry Jeff Walker, and in 2021 released the album JT - a tribute to his son Justin Townes Earle who died in 2020. Steve will be appearing at Blues Fest in Melbourne along with Lucinda Williams over the Easter weekend, and also at Blues Fest in Byron Bay, plus the Enmore Theatre on April 3. This podcast sponsored by Bluesfest Melbourne.
In an alternate universe, Steve Earle might have just been a rockabilly dude. Be glad that we don't actually live in that universe. Still, Steve's pre-Guitar Town material from the early 1980s deserves a listen, especially if you're a nerd like us.
We're taking a deep dive into Steve Earle's first LP. There's something for everyone here- core talk, country talk, dudes with $100,000 pick-up trucks who pretend to be oppressed, and much more. Come hang with us, even if you don't have a two pack habit or a motel tan.

Or more famous from Waukesha, Wisconsin than Les Paul? Hmm, we think not. Les Paul is the only person who is in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of Fame! Not only was he an incredible musician, but he was also the inventor of the solid body electric guitar, and shaped how we play and hear music today. Steve Earle dreamed of being like his idol Townes Van Zandt. More about SJ McArdle. As a solo singer-songwriter, SJ has also released three albums, most recently Blood and Bones in 2011. The songs feature contributions from some of SJ’s heroes like Rodney Crowell, guitarist Richard Bennett (Steve Earle’s Guitar Town) and the Love Sponge Strings (Bruce Springsteen’s The Rising). Irish Times (photo by Frank Miller) The album’s lead-off song, “Two Steps From Heaven” was the main song in the Cecelia Ahern-written movie Between Heaven and Here. Accompanying the album release was some significant media attention and reviews and very successful German and Irish tours. Another of SJ’s songs, “Till The Docklands Drown”, is performed during Element Pictures’ A Date For Mad Mary (2016) and several of his readings of traditional Irish songs are featured in the 2019 movie End of Sentence, starring Sarah Bolger, Logan Lerman and John Hawkes. He performed songs from Blood and Bones live on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM and on Ireland AM on TV3. In 2009 he completed a European arena tour as special guest to Reamonn, playing to 70,000 people over three weeks. SJ has also been in occasional demand as a session musician, playing mandolin for Ricky Warwick as they opened shows for Bob Dylan (Odyssey, Belfast) and Sheryl Crow (Point, Dublin). He has also shared a stage or studio with Neil Hannon, Stewart Agnew, Joe Elliott and Miss Paula Flynn. Praise for Kern’s False Deceiver: “Quite lovely … an intriguing release. Those interested in trad music that crosses over into singer/songwriter territory will find this album particularly attractive, but its accessibility will have easy appeal to general audiences. Thumbs up!” – The Irish Echo Praise for Blood and Bones: “Bravo for an artist who has taken contemporary Irish music to parts it far too seldom reaches” – Hot Press “SJ’s deep, sonorous voice brings authority to the songs. If Whipping Boy were raised in Nashville they might sound like this” – Mail On Sunday “Spare couplets conjuring entire vistas with the focus of David Lynch” – The Irish TimesSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Escuchar audio

The sixteen-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner joins us to talk about his remarkably varied body of songwriting from country to to rock to political songs to Americana and contemporary folk. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul tell you how you can hear their wild story about getting ready for the Steve Earle interview, and they explain why this episode is particularly special. PART TWO - 7:12 mark Paul and Scott head over to Steve's Los Angeles hotel to get the details on how a Chicago radio station saved his career; why reading is more important than listening to records; the book Townes Van Zandt loaned him that transformed his view of writing; the concert that inspired Steve to write "Guitar Town;" what he really thinks of the "Copperhead Road" line-dancing phenomenon; the first song he wrote after a long period of drug addiction and homelessness; why bluegrass is like bebop; who he says is THE badass country singer/songwriter in Nashville today; why he's working on a new political album that isn't just about preaching to the choir; and which song he would play for Guy Clark today to try to impress him. ABOUT STEVE EARLE Singer, songwriter, musician, author, actor, record producer, and progressive political activist Steve Earle rose to prominence in the 1980s with his album Guitar Town, which topped the Billboard country album chart, earned two Grammy nominations, picked up a Top New Male Artist nomination from the Academy of Country Music, and is included among Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of all Time. Raised in Texas, Earle launched his career in Nashville playing bass in legendary songwriter Guy Clark’s backing band. Following a stint recording with a rockabilly-influenced sound for Epic Records, Earle switched to MCA where he broke through with now-classic songs such as “Guitar Town,” “Someday,” “Goodbye’s All We’ve Got Left,” “My Old Friend the Blues,” “Fearless Heart,” “Nowhere Road,” “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied,” “The Devil’s Right Hand,” “The Other Kind,” and “Copperhead Road,” which reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. Drug addiction, homelessness, and a period of incarceration derailed Earle’s career for several years before he reemerged in the mid-1990s as standard-bearer for contemporary folk and Americana music. His eclectic comeback albums Train a Comin’, I Feel Alright and El Corazon garnered near-universal critical praise. The new millennium found Steve continuing to earn attention for his songs, including “Galway Girl,” “John Walker’s Blues,” “Jerusalem,” “The Revolution Starts Now,” and “City of Immigrants.” Always difficult to categorize, Steve has recorded the highly-acclaimed bluegrass album The Mountain with The Del McCoury Band, a traditional blues album called Terraplane, and a duet album with Shawn Colvin. In total, Earle has released nineteen studio albums and has earned sixteen Grammy nominations, including three wins in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. Steve’s songs have been covered by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Joan Baez, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Wanda Jackson, Bob Seger, Levon Helm, and many others. His son, Justin Townes Earle, is a respected singer-songwriter in his own right.
Most of us found out about Steve Earle when his first album, “Guitar Town” came out in 1986. It is still one of the best first album from any artist ever. To date he has released 17 albums and won Grammeys for several of them. If that weren’t enough, he has appeared in 2 television series, “The Wired” and “Treme” and written 2 books. His most recent album “Guy” is composed entirely of songs by one of his Texas songwriting mentors, Guy Clark. In this podcast Steve shares his strong opinions on a range of topics: recording techniques, musicians who deserve the designation- genius, his admiration for his touring band, The Dukes, the quality of certain acoustic and electric guitars etc. It’s a rapid fire conversation where the facts and anecdotes come at you fast and furious. If you’re a SLN listener you will love this podcast.
Actor Tom Everett Scott finds parallels to his own life in the small-town roots and overnight success of Steve Earle’s 1986 debut album Guitar Town. Every so often an artist comes along whose talent, brilliance and charm grab the public’s attention so quickly and so intensely that the person’s sudden elevation to celebrity shocks even them. Such is the case of Tom Everett Scott, who not long after graduating from theater school, was cast in his hero Tom Hank’s directorial debut That Thing You Do, which has since become a cult classic for music and movie lovers everywhere. Tom went on to star in several of the most iconic movies and television series of his generation, including American Werewolf in Paris, Dead Man on Campus and, most recently, truTV’s I’m Sorry. Never one to forget his small-town roots, the heartfelt blues rock longing and quiet country loneliness of Steve Earle’s debut album Guitar Town, also sharing in instant classic status when it was released in 1986, reminded Tom much of where he’s been and how he’s gotten to where he is now. First up, an album that succeeds at being entirely country and entirely 80's and, somehow, manages to own the hell out of both of these traits. Then an album that made 27 cry and Jacob space out, both in the best possible ways, absolutely brimming with black excellence. 482: Guitar Town by Steve Earle 481: Voodoo by D'Angelo Theme song by Twenty-Seven Interlude: Acid Jazz by Kevin McLeod of Incompetech.com

Well folks, you're in for a real treat this time. We've interviewed some truly great songwriters, but never one that even other top-level writers look to in awe. That is, until now. We're thrilled and honored to bring you an interview with a genuine "living legend" JIMBEAU HINSON! Jimbeau's credits include writing:(I'm Settin') Fancy Free (#1 hit for The Oak Ridge Boys) Party Crowd (#2 hit for David Lee Murphy) Train of Memories (#3 hit for Kathy Mattea) Don't Give Candy to a Stranger (#4 hit for Larry Boone) Harmony (#5 hit for John Conlee) Hillbilly Highway with Steve Earle (off Earle's breakthrough album "Guitar Town") ...but this list only scratches the surface of an incredible career that spans 5 decades. We (Steve and Marie) were actually invited into Jimbeau's ranch outside Nashville to conduct this interview with he and his wife Brenda... and even got a tour of the house. You can be sure that this experience was a "high-water" mark for THE COMMERCIAL SUICIDE SONGWRITING PODCAST, and we're excited to be sharing it with you. Now how are we ever going to top THIS??? Although Austin may have laid claim to the title of the "live music capitol of the world," there really is only one town where musicians with a hardcore jones for country music make their pilgrimage. Native Canadian Lindi Ortega had already made a name for herself up north, releasing a pair of EPs and a record that racked up a pair of Juno award nominations when she arrived in Nashville. But once in Guitar Town she hit the red ground running, enlisting fellow Canadian journeyman musician Colin Linden to produce her newest record, "Cigarettes and Truckstops." The result is a set of ten songs that play like Dolly Parton on steroids. There are nods to the female forebears of torch and twang - Emmylou, Loretta, Tammy and Patsy (all the demigoddesses that should be on Music City's Mount Rushmore) but Ortega is also a writer of substance who is not afraid to singlehandedly attempt to pull country music into the 21st century by questioning the authority of Nashville's politically incorrect establishment. Her songs pull no punches, but they are dressed up in enough sequins that the good ol' boys may be too entranced by her voice and charming stage presence to know they're being rendered archaic. And you simply must hear her smoldering take on The Man in Black's "Ring of Fire." If Ortega is the future of country music, we can't wait to see where we're going.
