Dave Coombs-Harvey Wallbanger Day (11/8/24) by 96.5 WKLH
Plenty of restaurant upstarts pin their hopes on building a better mousetrap. They're not so much bringing something new to the market as promising an improvement over what consumers already know and love. Look at the better-burger pack, or the now-wheezing fast-casual pizza market. TGI Fridays took a sledgehammer to that approach. It owed its initial success to mating rituals and sheer irreverence. No entrepreneur had dared mine that potential before. Young consumers had never seen anything like it, and they embraced the rebellion with zeal. Then the concept spent the next six decades trying to scrub its image and temper its points of difference for the sake of mainstream success and scalability. This week's episode of Restaurant Rewind provides a condensed version of the journey, starting with the now-forgotten days when Fridays raised parents' eyebrows—along with young adults' hopes for a hookup. It's also a reminder of the challenges that face heavily themed restaurant operations as they age. So pull up a barstool, top off the Harvey Wallbanger and give a listen.

Jeff Mitchell, President of the Green Bay Gamblers and from Blue Green Events, joins to talk about the upcoming Old Fashioned Fest on September 21. Old Fashions can be made in many different ways (on bar wants to light one on fire). In addition to Old Fashions, the night includes light fare food and music at the Resch Center. Old fashions really bring people together in Wisconsin, and as people coming to the draft they'll discover what Wisconsin is through this drink. Jeff tells Jim (after linens inevitably come up) to throw a Harvey Wallbanger party. Jim's already planning. Kristen Ambos from Point Mortgage Corporation joins to gives us a housing market update and the movement on rates. She says they are going in the right direction but SLOWLY. As long as rent stays high the demand to buy a home exists. Kristen tells us she has many parents coming to her talking about watching their kids work so hard and barely moving forward because of price increases and what options are available to help with housing or passing the house on. I love this movie!!! I had Movie Pass, don't we miss that option, and saw this movie 7 times in theaters (3 of those times were with other people). I have the giant wall hanging poster in my guest room. It stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, along with Kyle Chandler, Sharon Horgan, Billy Magnussen, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, Jesse Plemons, and more. This was co-written and co-directed by John Francis Daley who you might remember as Sweets in Bones, his dad is the bartender in the movie. So for this episode the tables were turned and I was one of the ones that had to drink more and drink during the recording. He hid it where no one would notice: in a screwdriver. Phil and Jake are joined by friend-of-the-pod and fandom specialist Melissa B. to rank Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the mixed drink known as the Harvey Wallbanger on the List of Every Damn Thing.Check out Melissa's reviews on the Comic News Insider podcast, find her on Instagram, and follow her work on Can the Replicator Make This? and Outside ComicCon.If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Melissa is also on the Board of Directors of the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame, and we talk a bit about racing at the beginning of the episode. Pixar's Cars remains the thing Phil is most prepared to talk about. Why are there military vehicles in this world? Why are there ambulances for that matter? Why school buses? Phil mentions a scene in the Brave Little Toaster where appliances at a junkyard sing a sad song. This page from Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel which also makes him sad. We discuss a number of other Star Trek properties, including the movies, as well as Star Trek: The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, Lower Decks and Picard. Of course we talk about the Star Trek: The Next Generation pinball game, which comes in second place on the Internet Pinball Database list of Top 300 Electronic Pinball Machines. “Darmok” is Phil's favorite episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (although he's only seen a few). It's about understanding people and learning how to listen. It's kind of like the thinking man's version of the episode from Star Trek: The Original Series where Kirk fights a lizard man (and you can see cars on the highway in the background). The SF Chronicle's little man dates all the way back to the 1940s! Sir Patrick Stewart is the true star of Star Trek: the Next Generation. When he's not on screen Phil & Jake immediately lose interest. Phil's feelings towards Data probably aren't going to date well. In related news, Sophia the android (who, of course, you can follow on twitter) probably wouldn't enjoy our episode on the uncanny valley effect very much (because she's a robot and can't experience enjoyment). Because the episode wouldn't be complete without it, we do mention both the Borg and the character of Q (no relation to QAnon). There are channels on YouTube of just ambient starship background noise. Here's one of the ship from Star Trek: the Next Generation. In Star Trek: TNG the crew of the ship sometimes go into a virtual reality type room for training or recreation, called the Holodeck. They solve mysteries as Sherlock Holmes, etc,,, whatever they have wardrobe and sets for at Paramount. Phil doesn't like it because the whole point of watching a TV show about travelling through space would presumably be to see people traveling through space. If he wanted to see a Sherlock Holmes-based TV show he'd watch one of those. Melissa has some real issues with the TNG episode “Sub Rosa” in which Dr. Crusher falls in love with her dead grandmother's candle ghost lover. We mention the character Geordi La Forge, who was born without sight but futuristic technology allows him to see. Phil's wonderful wife Beth mentioned that Deanna Troi's hair is not her real hair. This is the latest in a series of outrages along the lines of when she told him that Kiefer Sutherland is wearing a wig in the Lost Boys (which is partially true) and that Lynda Carter's butt was padded in Wonder Woman. Jake tried out the Harvey Wallbanger at Whitechapel, a London-themed steampunk-adjacent gin-centric cocktail bar in San Francisco. One of us claims that Galliano-- the liquor most known for its use in the Harvey Wallbanger-- is also used to make a Sex On the Beach, but afterwords we couldn't find any recipes supporting that claim. With Tommy still in Tampa, Alex & Tara spend about an hour recapping and recommending (or not) two dozen of the most recent movies they've streamed because why not? We love movies. For each film, we give you: A brief idea of what it's about, the year it came out, Rotten Tomatoes ratings, runtime, and a Watch/Skip reco. "Watch" ratings abound because Alex is either easy to please or pretty good at picking out what to watch...or possibly a little of both. Mac @ Night: S02E03 - Tonight on the 14th Episode of Mac @ Night, I do something I don't normally do, I name names. This isn't some airing of dirty laundry, this is a fed head trying to understand the actions of two handlers who, well, make me ask the question Michael Scott once asked: "Why are you the way that you are?" One of these people pretends to be someone else, I mean, isn't that what we all do? Create a fictional character and pretend to be that person? Yes, but this person pretends to be a different handler. Pretends to be new to the game, pretends to have stumbled onto the forums for the first time and creates account after account, pretending to be an entirely different handler each time. The second one, well, you'll have to listen to hear that one. This is a hobby designed to have fun, and while it's perfectly normal to hide certain aspects about your life (it's not a requirement to ever state your real name or anything personal about you) and some have the 'quirk' lets call it, to lie about things they own so that they can feel superior to us, whatever, you do you. It's also perfectly normal to want to try out a different character without people knowing who the handler is. That's fine. What is not normal behavior is pretending to be a whole other person - perhaps even engaging with yourself OOC - and trying to convince us all that you are this whole other person. That falls under the category of both trying too hard, a tad creepy and just straight up bizarre behavior. Why not just make the character and lay low OOC? No one should force you to interact if you don't want to. No one should make it a requirement, that to succeed in an efed, you must be on discord or be all chatty and sharing stuff. We've had plenty in the EWC who keep to themselves, never speak OOC and go on to win titles and reach the HOF. We are all here to enjoy the game, maybe make some friends, tell some stories, but if you find yourself hating a particular efed, and yet you continuously join that efed over and over, and even immediately after a rage quit, you join again .. maybe the problem isn't the fed. Maybe the problem is you. So again I ask those two people: Why are you the way that you are? Tonight's drink: Screwdriver. In my Screwdriver tonight I have Simply Orange (no pulp) orange juice and Smirnoff Fluffed Marshmallow Flavored Vodka. Smirnoff began with a vodka distillery founded in Moscow by Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov in the 1860's. I explain where the name "Screwdriver" comes from and I explain what makes it different from The Harvey Wallbanger. I hope you enjoy tonight's episode. I've been in the efed / efedding world since 1995 and running my own efed (The Extreme Wrestling Corporation) on and off since 1997. I come into each podcast with over 26 years of experience in the hobby, but I humbly understand that I don't know it all and don't pretend to. This podcast is my opinion and I appreciate you taking the time to listen. I love efedding, I love the efed world, this hobby is important to me and I genuinely wish to see every efed have longevity and success. As always, feel free to sound off in the comments section on our forums. See you next time. Stay safe! Cheers - Mac

We’ll meet-up with Harvey Wallbanger, Tom Collins, and a couple of pieces of iconic pop culture that have impacted us both. So pull up a stool and join in.
The 1980's cocktails were colorful, layered, used plenty of liqueur and had names with sexual undertones. One of our favorites is the Harvey Wallbanger that takes the Screwdriver to a new place by adding Orange bitters, Simple Syrup and Galliano Liqueur.

With so many great races to pick from on a weekend where three Road to the Derby preps are in play, this week's Key Races & Bets Podcast focuses on a quartet of great races at Gulfstream Park, where we were lucky enough to tab $74 winner Spooky Channel and $24 winner Zulu Alpha last week. We start with the Sweetest Chant Stakes, race 8 (post 3:34 eastern) and end with the Holy Bull Stakes (race 11, post 5:34 eastern) in which I think we might have a big upset like last year in this race when Harvey Wallbanger won at 29 to 1. Good Luck.

Last week we kicked off a Gay Pride Month series on the podcast. We’re devoting the rest of the month to LGBTQ stories - the importance of gay bars and clubs through history, the cultural impact of the movements that came out of those important spaces, and the renegades, revolutionaries and icons behind it all. It’s such a big subject, we’ve created our first podcast series for #PrideMonth. In this second episode in this series, we touch on the gay club culture in the 70s and 80s - the music, dancing, drag, sex, and drugs involved in the queer club scene, and how it crossed over and influenced straight/mainstream culture through the years. Our guest this week is Emily Colucci, a writer and arts curator based in New York City. Emily is co-founder of Filthy Dreams,a blog analyzing art and culture through a queer lens and a touch of camp. This week's featured cocktail happens to be one of the most popular cocktails of the disco era: The Harvey Wallbanger. This drink was heavily advertised all throughout the 70s to promote sales of Galliano Liqueur which, in turn, became the most popular liqueur in America during the decade. Harvey Wallbanger 2 oz Vodka 4 oz Fresh orange juice 3/4 oz Galliano Add vodka and orange juice to a tall, ice-filled highball glass. Float the Galliano on top and stir. Garnish with orange wheel and enjoy. links: Party Out Of Bounds: Nightlife As Activism Since 1980 Thump.Vice Disco Inferno: How 1979's Doofy and Dangerous Disco Demolition Night Foreshadowed The Alt Right Nelson Sullivan's YouTube Videos Emily Colucci's Website Twitter Bit by a Fox: blog: http://bitbyafox.com instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bitbyafox/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BitByAFox/ twitter: https://twitter.com/bitbyafox music: https://www.humanworldwide.com
Join the Daily Beast’s Drink + Food editor Noah Rothbaum (@NRothbaum) and its Senior Drinks Columnist David Wondrich (@DavidWondrich) as they discuss the greatest bartenders of all time and how they changed what the world drinks. Thanks to the rebirth of the cocktail you can now, once again, easily find well-mixed drinks across the country. But we’ve become so accustomed to great bartending that it’s easy to forget the cocktail dark ages when menus were dominated by a range of bizarre concoctions. On this episode of Life Behind Bars, we talk about the roots of these recipes and discuss whether the Fuzzy Navel and the Harvey Wallbanger are ever worth drinking. It worked for our guest today, but I don’t recommend it unless of course you are as talented as he. Missing deadlines, ignoring briefs, but using his quick wits and competitive spirit, Michael Mann has rightfully garnered the title UK Brand Ambassador of Bols Genever and Galliano. We are also joined by Jess Mili, who didn’t miss deadlines, read her brief, and went on to beat 2,000 entrants from 75 countries, grabbing the title of Bols Around the World Champion. It was great to catch her in London as her year begins representing Lucas Bols around the world. Genever, the precursor to Gin, is sampled in bars all over the Netherlands. Little shots of potent juniper-flavored spirit served morning, noon and night. It’s been around since the Dutch King William of Orange took the boat west in the 17th C, legalized its production, and allowed every Brit to own his own still. Today, we may have more of a penchant for Gin, but Michael and Jess are changing all of that by reintroducing us to the original. Galliano, the number one liqueur sold in the USA in the 1970’s, is being exhumed from the cellar and dusted off to be used in newfangled cocktails. The old Harvey Wallbanger’s new BFF is Michael Mann! You can catch Michael and me at Also Festival in Warwickshire the last weekend in June - talking Harvey Wallbangers and Espresso Martinis! If you want more information on Also Festival, please go to their website: www.also-festival.com Where you can hear me drinking next: Next week it’s from Holland to Flanders we jump. There, in the university town of Ghent, we’ll meet with Joerden and Tina who developed their grandmother's elderflower liqueur into a national drink. The Harvey Wallbanger is a quintessentially 70s cocktail and will round out our trip to the disco era. The origin of this one is likely a marketing ploy to add a bit of exotic character to a standard screwdriver. The key ingredient in this one, Galliano, is an Italian liqueur based on anise and vanilla. You'll see the distinctive bottle gathering dust on bar shelves everywhere. 6 ounces orange juice 2 ounces vodka 1 ounce Galliano. Pour orange juice and vodka into a collins glass over ice. Stir with a long bar spoon. Pour the Galliano carefully over the back of the spoon — it should float atop the drink. Garnish with a orange wedge and a cherry.
