"Once I put those shoulder pads on...it was like I was going to war.” Andre Johnson From The U to NFL Hall of Fame, on this episode of The Pivot Podcast, Ryan, Fred, and Channing sit down with seven-time Pro Bowler, one of the best wide receivers to play the game, the heart and soul of Houston Texans franchise: Andre Johnson. As the Texans chase another AFC South title, Andre, who's still a big part of the organization today, takes us back to the beginning of his journey during expansion years and how he became the face of the franchise. From his early days as a young star at "The U" to dominating the NFL on Sundays, Andre shares what fueled his drive to make the Texans a team people respected. He opens up about his mindset on the field, where putting on those shoulder pads felt like preparing for war, and why he was so determined to make the city of Houston proud every single season.  The conversation gets personal as Andre reflects on his upbringing and how his strained relationship with his late father shaped the man-and father- he is today. He gets deep about the difficult choice he made to ultimately walk away from the game of football- a decision the guys understand all too well- but how he knew it was the right time because his mind was not in it anymore. Ryan has some jokes pretending to get a call from an old foe, as the guys reminisce his famous scuffle with Cortland Finnegan, which he says fans bring up to him everywhere he goes. While it's not his favorite topic, Andre shares what was really going through his head that day.  Getting his take on the current Texans team, the guys ask what it'll take to bring a championship mentality back to Houston and what kind of receiving yards he would have racked up with a quarterback like CJ Stroud under center. Andre weighs in on some big names, past present and future playmakers of the league like Antonio Brown, whose talent he admired despite the controversies, AJ Brown's frustrations and Travis Hunter, the young college star who's doing things you rarely see in this generation. And what's next for the Hall of Famer? Will we see him on the sidelines coaching? He's not quite there yet, though he admits it'll be on the horizon someday.  Andre's story is all about work ethic and legacy. Whether he's talking about the pride he takes in the Texans, the struggles of his short time with the Colts, or the mental toughness he adopted to make his game look effortless, and all his focus on off-the field ventures helping community and how giving back has helped him in more ways then he can share. With the holidays around the corner, never be too busy to take time to help others, you never know how a little help goes a long way. September starts a new year for one of the NFL's top tier teams and the young offense is balanced by some strong veterans on defense. Motivated by the leadership and talent of quarterback Jalen Hurts, DeVonta believes having another year playing together under their belt will only make the offensive duo that much stronger this season.  Often criticized for his size being smaller than the typical wide receiver, DeVonta has never allowed that to hold him back and continues to let his play on the field do the talking for him and quiet his naysayers. Confidence is never lacking and rising to the highest when fueled by competition DeVonta is ready to take on the NFL's best this season and finds it a waste of energy to talk trash so it comes down to maximizing his abilities and outplaying his opponents.  DeVonta also talks about the close bond developed while at Alabama between the wide receiver room and that no matter the different paths the guys have taken in life and in their careers, their brotherhood has remained solid. With the recent happenings of former college teammate and friend Henry Ruggs, DeVontaa talks about why it was important to be there for him as a friend during his difficult time and even missed a day of camp to attend his sentencing hearing in Nevada.  DaVonta is excited for the season to be underway with high hopes for his Eagles team to make a Super Bowl run again and also looking forward to another big moment in his life, becoming a dad soon.  Learn more about your ad choices. Their Irish ancestry was a hallmark of the Kennedys' initial political profile, as JFK leveraged his working-class roots to connect with blue-collar voters. Today, we remember this iconic American family as the vanguard of wealth, power, and style rather than as the descendants of poor immigrants. Here at last, we meet the first American Kennedys, Patrick and Bridget, who arrived as many thousands of others did following the Great Famine—penniless and hungry. The world views balance as making room for the things that are most important to us. However, as believers who submit both our work and rest to Christ the King, balance is making room for those things that are important to his Kingdom. Momma Theologians Practical Takeaways Do you struggle more with the idol of work or the idol of rest? Take time today to pray through the idols of your heart. (If you're like me, you may find that you are tempted to do both in different seasons). If you tend to idolize rest, I recommend reading The Rest of God by Mark Buchanan. If you tend to idolize work, I recommend reading Humble Roots by Hannah Anderson. Momma Theologians Prayerful Takeaways Make a list of verses that address idolization of work or rest. Write them in your planner or calendar to help you remember the promises of God throughout your day. Find a list of the attributes of God and pray through them. Reframing our day in light of God's character can help us honor him with both our work and our rest. Text another momma and share your struggle. In our culture that celebrates the “superhero” and “hot mess” moms, you can encourage other mommas to become a “Kingdom-minded” momma. ____________________ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR DEVOTIONAL NEWSLETTER TO STAY CONNECTED WITH OUR MINISTRY Go to www.mommatheologians.com to find articles and essays written by mothers just like you as they share stories and reflections about how they grow spiritually in Christ in the midst of motherhood. The First Kennedys: The Humble Roots of an American Dynasty by Neal Thompson Based on genealogical breakthroughs and previously unreleased records, this is the first book to explore the inspiring story of the poor Irish refugee couple who escaped famine, created a life together in a city hostile to Irish, immigrants, and Catholics, and launched the Kennedy dynasty in America. Less than a decade after their marriage in Boston, Patrick's sudden death left Bridget to raise their children single-handedly. Her rise from housemaid to shop owner in the face of rampant poverty and discrimination kept her family intact, allowing her only son P.J. to become a successful saloon owner and businessman. P.J. went on to become the first American Kennedy elected to public office—the first of many. Written by the grandson of an Irish immigrant couple and based on first-ever access to P.J. So listen in. My guest today on Episode 7 is Hannah Anderson. We talk about living as an outsider in a rural community, wisdom gained through discernment, her calling to her place and to her writing, and her new book, All That’s Good: Recovering the Lost Art of Discernment. And at the end, you’ll have your one small step to help take all the things that matter into your ordinary, holy, life. Hannah provided us some wonderful questions to help us in the ways of discernment: --How would what I share (online) affect my real-life relationships? --What is the point of correcting? Would it build the community? --What would I say to this person if this person was in my kitchen? Proximitiy checks our tendencies. A SMALL STEPThis week remember to lighten up. Humor disarms. On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Hannah Anderson on the topic of humility. We talked about everything from what humility is to how Jesus embodied humility here on this earth.   Here is a quote from her book, Humble Roots, “Before we can even begin to answer our call to come to him, Jesus comes to us. Because we could never sufficiently humble ourselves, Jesus humbles himself, and by doing so, he became both the model and the means of our own humility. Through his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus shows us our true identity as people dependent on God for life. And through his life, death, and resurrection, he imparts this humble life to us once again.”   Hannah and I flesh this out in a real practical way in today’s conversation. So you’ll know her a little better, Hannah lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where she spends her days working with her husband in rural ministry, writing, and caring for their family. As a writer and co-host of the weekly podcast, Persuasion, she enjoys exploring how the gospel informs and transforms how we think about current events and popular trends. Her books Made for More and Humble Roots unpack the question of  our identity and purpose as women destined to reflect God's glory to the world around us. She also has a new book coming out on October 2 called All That’s Good: Recovering the Lost Art of Discernment.   HANNAH’S RESOURCES Humility by Andrew Murray The Freedom of Self Forgetfulness by Timothy Keller Humility: Wellspring of Virtue by Dietrich von Hildebrand Learning dependence in community   HANNAH’S SIMPLE JOYS Snacks for dinner Thrift shopping Her cat   CONNECT WITH HANNAH Website Facebook Instagram Twitter   DISCUSSION QUESTIONS How would you define humility?
