What is Truth? The Difference Between Reality TV, Documentaries and Sentencing Mitigation Videos

Set For Sentencing

In a “POST TRUTH” society, it can be hard to determine if what you are watching is the actual truth.  In reality TV, documentary filmaking, and even the so-called "news", truth is not always a sacred value.      But in my world, nobody would be surprised to hear me say, the truth is hard to discern.    But, many presume that those who advocate for the accused and convicted do not seek the truth.  In my experience, particularly in the sentencing world, it's the government that has no concern for the deeper truth of the case and client.   I read sentencing memos from the government describing defendants I do not recognize.  I listen to some callous judges pronounce sentences against defendants and I don't know who they are talking about.    So how do we get to the real truth at SENTENCING?  I can make a credible case that my passion, video sentencing advocacy, is the TRUEST form of legal advocacy there is.  It gives the decision maker a front row seat to the client's story, her demeanor, her credibily, and her sincerity. It's objectively verifiable if the interviews and editing are done properly.    Perhaps most importantly, unlike any other form of media, the lawyers who engage in this process are bound by the rules of ethics.  There are no ethical standards in journalism, reality TV, or regular documentary filmmaking.    Therefore, how cool is this?  Helping us get Set For Sentencing is Debbie Levin, a long-time Hollywood creative professional who has spent most of her 18 years in the world of Reality Television, working on shows we've all lovingly binged, including the Real Housewives of OC/NJ, Top Chef, and many more.  We had a GREAT conversation around the truth about truth!   In this episode:   Is legal filmmaking true? What's the difference between “literal truth” and “emotional truth”? The inside scoop on reality TV (including the “Bethany Frankel Clause”); How even nature documentaries, supposedly unvarnished views into the natural world sometimes lie for entertainment value; The wonderful world of “frankenbyting” which we reality shows can do, but legal documentaries cannot (and the greatest example of all time from the Simpsons); The very best advice for telling the truth of your clients' stories.   LINKS:  Just what the hell are "sentencing mitigation videos" anyway?  Wanna see one?  Here's an example from a case I worked on involving the plot to kidnap the governer of michigan:   https://youtu.be/AOhOY3uuvRQ?si=ikj47EHiqsNy9d7P   I referred to a New York Times "Op Doc" that was made about the work that I do producing "sentencing mitigation videos".  Here is the link to see that piece, called "No Jail Time, the Movie"   https://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000005581635/no-jail-time-the-movie.html -

A Sofa King Classic: Tony Robbins

On this Classic episode of The Sofa King Podcast, we talk about the self-improvement mogul, Tony Robbins. He's the six foot seven inch motivational speaker who is worth $480 million dollars and holds seminars that cost between two and eight thousand dollars. Tony Robbins was born Anthony J. Mahavoric on February 29, 1960. His father left them, and his mother was abusive to point of chasing him around the house with a kitchen knife, so at age 17, he set out on his own and was such an amazing salesperson that he was in his own apartment and living a better life than he did with his mom in a matter of months. Robbins was an amazingly driven teen, becoming a sports writer by sheer force of will and quickly becoming a top salesperson for another motivational speaker. By the time he was an adult, he had studied psychology and hypnotism (never formally educated), and he started his own motivational industry. His companies are now worth over $5 billion, and he was the king of the late night infomercial during the 1990s. So what makes Tony Robbins worthy of discussion? We set out on our research to talk about this guy who we all thought was the ultimate scam artist, taking the savings of retirees and scamming them with bad real estate investments. But that doesn't seem to be the case at all. We honestly ruled him to be a passionate and compassionate man, driven by helping the lives of others more than driven by his wealth (though it astounding). How did the documentary called I Am Not Your Guru change our minds? How do you know he didn't hypnotize us? How did he get Oprah Winfrey to walk across hot coals? What does he do to get a woman to break up with her boyfriend in front of 2500 people? Listen, laugh, learn. I'm taking you back to 3rd grade and the snarky trick Ms. Crowder played on our class and the life lesson that took me many years to learn from it. Find out how following the leader can get you further away from achieving your goal, and keep you stuck from accessing your own expertise and voice. Episodes Highlights: The shift in learning from the "experts:" I'm giving you MY answers, but I don't know THE answers. Experts are sharing everything they think you need in books and training, but you need to follow you! No one has the all answers. How assimilation can, particularly for women, can keep you from speaking up, doing the hard thing, and stepping into your own thought leadership and authority. How to go against the grain, be vocal, and why it's the key to letting your mission shineFollowing the leader results in homogeneous, boring marketing. The same redundant calls-to-action and boring social campaigns. Your audience wants to hear YOUR unique point of view. When it comes to endless "suggestions" and feedback, take what you need, and leave what you don't! Plus, hear about why I chose to have a waterbirth with my son, and how I dealt with vast, unhelpful opinions from friends and family, and "experts." When you create your own strategy, unique point of view, or decision, you must trust and believe in yourself first in order to create the support to handle the naysayers. Thoughts to think, on purpose: The magic is in forging my own path.I get to decide what's best for me in my business. There is not one right next step, only the one I decide is right.Other resources: Dr. Wendy Mogul, "Voice Lesson for Parents" Tony Robbins documentary, "I Am Not Your Guru" on Netflix. Send me a direct message and tell me your Ms. Crowder moment over on Instagram Links may contain affiliate tracking links Think you've reached out to “everyone” in your network? Last year I was totally delighted to appear on a podcast called The Coach's Compass, giving me an opportunity to dive deep into all things coaching with host Clark Luby.In the episode, Clark - a listener to The Coach's Journey - turns my favourite starter question back on me by asking me to recall when I first came across coaching, and that takes me back to a crucial juncture in my life and career. From there, we talk through the support structures and containers that helped me through early coaching challenges such as finding clients and talking about money, and I offer up some practical tools that can help you to establish the kind of coach you really want to be, factoring in the styles of coaching you admire and personalities you aspire to emulate. We also explore the importance of Rich Litvin's work to the evolution of coaching and to my own practice, and I share one of the exercises he taught me that led me to do some of my best work.In this episode, we talk about:The shift that happens after your first attempt at being an adultMaking the process of your work something that you really enjoyBeing a player in the game of your businessThe point at which coaching businesses start to carry themselves forwardHow to stay authentic while taking influence from other coachesWhy I think it's okay to steal from people*We also talk about the best times to break the rules of coaching, or the rules of anything for that matter! To hear other episodes of the Coach's Compass Podcast, visit https://thecoachscompass.libsyn.com/For information about my wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswale.com, and to buy my book, click here.Join the WBECS Free Pre-Summit: https://share.coaching.com/6d3qN2Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. Two years ago, I wondered how I could, as a public relations agency, use the web to help our clients even more, while also selling our services online. As you may know if you listened to Episode 22, service quality is the agency's number-one value. Long before we created our new service, NATA PR SCHOOL, I wondered if it was possible to come up with PR topics every week. So, I decided to go ahead and make live appearances on Facebook. Sure, at first it was strange to be talking to my computer without knowing who – if anyone – was listening. After that, I found I could speak for 10 minutes on a topic and that I knew my field well enough to have something to say every week. So, little by little, week after week, I built what is now NATA PR SCHOOL. This great adventure began in 2017. My curiosity and my desire to learn often lead me down unusual paths. On Netflix one night I discovered Joe Berlinger's excellent documentary, “I Am Not Your Guru,” which features Tony Robbins in action during one of his seminars: A Date With Destiny. And while I was looking for Tony's podcast, the Apple platform generously showed me several other podcasts, including The Life Coach School with Brooke Castillo. A single podcast from this coaching school has helped me beyond all my expectations, to: 1- lose weight when my doctor no longer knew what advice to give me (women's hormones can be really tricky); 2- find the man in my life; 3- and skillfully grow the company to the point where our sales were up 40% (before Covid). For now, I'll stick to showing you how I adopt this technique at work so that you can make yourself known and develop your business. This method, which we use every day, is definitely paying off. Here's how far I've taken it: 1- I am an LCS-Certified Life Coach. 2- I'm also a seasoned professional public relations coach who created NATA PR over 20 years ago. 3- Two years ago, I set up PR RENDEZVOUS: live presentations on Facebook that I host regularly, to stay in the habit of talking to my computer while knowing that you're listening. 4- It was PR RENDEZVOUS that led me to create NATA PR SCHOOL, to share the basics of our profession and the tools to grow with businesses and self-employed entrepreneurs, free of charge (since they have no PR budgets). I say it loud and clear in this podcast – I want to reinvent PR while highlighting the human relationships. They're the core of our profession and they carry us further and faster together – reaching even more people on the internet. This new Wild West that is the internet was, after all, created by humans, for humans. Today, it gives us a tremendous universal connection, to which we humbly bring our own humanity. You can find everything on the web, and we've chosen to showcase our ability to do good and multiply our opportunities so that everyone can use this fabulous tool – PR combined with social media. And we never forget that the real world continues to exist! By “chatting” with my computer for two years, I've discovered the value of using the internet wisely. If you need to clarify your communications and development strategy, don't wait! Contact me for a free consultation, and I'll tell you in all honesty if I can help you. Free consultation. You would think you are a rational human being right! That you're able to assess new information in a completely logical way; you've made it this far in life. I have a HUGEEE surprise for you, Delugne Nation! Ever since I started this podcast, it has been a journey of ups and downs. Along the way, I got to connect with people, improve my investing skills, and at the same time, I get to share my message with you. And as I produce more episodes, every now and then, I do get messages from friends and listeners giving me their consistent supports and I am really really grateful for that. My intention has always been to help you guys who want to start investing, and I do my best to keep investing simple and inspire you to start your investing journey. For that, I really hope that I'm making a difference in your life. As of a few months ago, I have been getting DM's from listeners and friends saying that they'd like to invest but they don't know how. At the same time, from my experience working in an investment education company and dealing with customers, I know that most people don't really apply what they have learned even after attending investing courses, why? The first reason is because of time, which is very much understandable because everyone has their own priorities. The second reason was the capital. A lot of them still think that they need a huge capital to invest which is not true at all. And lastly, some of them still find investing to be complicated. Because of all these reasons, that is why I keep my content as simple as possible, firstly because I am not a very smart person, secondly is because if I can understand then chances are, you can too. Not only that, because of your lack of time and capital, I have decided to launch a short course for you guys who really want to get started. It's one of the simplest ways to investing that I wished someone had taught me 10 years ago. It does not require hours of analysis, just 10 - 15 minutes is good enough. And all you have to do is to invest consistently according to the framework that I've shared in the course. But here's the thing, I Am Not Your Guru and i don't want to pretend to be one. I know that there are many self-proclaimed Investment Gurus out there who claim themselves to be experts, promising you to make a certain percentage return per year. But that is not me. I am here only to share with you what works for me. Something that I wished someone had taught me years ago so that I could have started investing a lot earlier. So if you're interested, feel free to enroll. It is a paid course, the whole intention is because I only wanted people who are serious and really committed to completing the course, and make full use out of it. But the SURPRISE that I wanted to share with you is that this short course is currently available for FREE and it's valid until the 1st of January 2021. So don't miss out if you're interested in getting started in your investing journey. Check out Delugne.com to find out more. *Encore episode from January 2019.* This week’s episode of the Date Your Wife podcast comes to you from beautiful Palm Beach, Florida, where the White’s are attending Tony Robbin’s Business Mastery Event. As they huddle in their bed trying to warm up from the ice-box temperatures they’ve been experiencing all day, they share stories about how Tony’s events have impacted and shifted their personal and business lives in major ways. Every week married couple Danielle and Garrett J White share insights and perspectives from within their own lives regarding the following topics discussed each month: Week 1: Sex Week 2: Money Week 3: Parenting Week 4: Communication In This Week’s Podcast…MONEY Point #1: Hippies & Weird Shit Personal development hasn’t always been at the top of Danielle’s list of priorities. Up until a few short years ago, she equated it to a bunch of hippies sitting around hugging trees. “Garrett was actually into some weird shit at different times during our marriage. The few personal development events I DID attend with him left me feeling totally creeped out.” QUESTION What experiences have you had with personal development events? Point #2: Date With Destiny After viewing Tony Robbin’s “I Am Not Your Guru” on Netflix in December of 2016, Danielle began having a change of heart towards self-development. Tony’s approach actually made sense to her. “It seemed to be a more logical approach and less weird shit.” As fate would have it, Tony’s son was attending Warrior Week at about the same time. As if right on cue, the Universe delivered up two tickets to Tony’s next event, Date With Destiny, a mere three weeks away. QUESTION Have you or your spouse ever attended Date With Destiny? Point #3: How Big Can You Dream? Danielle’s experience at Date With Destiny changed her thinking in a lot of ways. One of the biggest impacts for her was the exercise where they were told to dream big and write down EVERYTHING they wanted. From this one exercise, Garrett and Danielle ended up making some major decisions in their marriage and businesses which resulted in some huge shifts for them that year. QUESTION Where in your world have you experienced a huge shift after hearing or experiencing something?   Point #4: Give Yourself Permission Garrett and Danielle had to leave their environment over and over again to get to a place where they could ultimately choose a life that was theirs as a couple and as a family. Garrett: Buying this house, investing in our family, and moving into this home literally shattered an entire box or frame of ideology that surrounded my brain. QUESTION Where in your world do you need to give yourself permission do to something that you know would yield big results or big shifts?   Point #5: It’s in the Numbers The biggest thing that Danielle is getting out of Business Mastery is confirming what she already suspected: she’s got to know her numbers better than she does. Event speaker Keith Cunningham taught,” As a business owner, there is no value in a number; the value is knowing what to do about the numbers that you see.” QUESTION What does it mean to you to not only know your numbers but to also know what to do about them? Communication Challenge: Grab your journals and carve out some time to Dream Big. Talk about and write down EVERYTHING you’d like to do within certain time frames, think way outside the box, and hold nothing back. Date Night Topic: Search out events you can attend this year TOGETHER for your individual growth AND for your growth as a couple. Choose one event and put it on your calendar. Make the leap. Your future is worth the investment. Quote of the Week: “The trifecta of insanity: choose to be married, choose to have kids, choose to have a business. You do those three things, and you’re either a glutton for punishment, a psychopath, or you want to have the fast train to big fucking results based on the power and the pressure of having to rise.” —Garrett J White “It was an “against all odds” situation because of the story we had been telling ourselves. But when we actually put our foot forward and started entertaining the idea, EVERYTHING started to fall into place for us.” —Danielle K White

Throughout our interview, Tony Robbins describes our path as “a lifetime of putting yourself on the line. And there’s only one way -- it’s forward.”  Tony's been dubbed by national and international publications as the #1 Life & Business Strategist, he’s a multiple-time #1 New York Times Best-Selling Author, he’s an wildly successful Entrepreneur, and one the world’s greatest Philanthropists.  Tony's the founder of 8 private companies that generate close to $10B in annual sales. Each of these businesses operate under the same creed: “improving the quality of life for people around the world.”  On the philanthropic front, the Tony Robbins Foundation and Feeding America conjoin to feed children all over the world. Tony's on his way to – get this – feeding 1 billion people. He’s been at it for 37 years, and in 2017, Tony and his team fed 100 million homes.  His passion and energy will jump through the speakers. I watched his “I Am Not Your Guru” doc that premiered on Netflix last year, and thought to myself…I’ve gotta get Tony on my podcast. Luckily, he said yes.  His latest bestseller – "Unshakable" – was just release on paperback. To script the 200-page book, Tony interviewed 50 of the world’s greatest financial minds, and created a step-by-step guide on how to accelerate your path to financial freedom. And throughout our discussion, we drill down deeper on what he's dubbed, "True Wealth". Suiting Up is a show that explores the psychology, playbook of tools, and strategies of the most influential people in sports, entrepreneurship, and entertainment.

“The trap of high experiences, however they occur, is that you become attached to their memory and so you try to recreate them. These memories compel you to try to reproduce the high." -Ram Dass I’ve many times been referred to watch I AM NOT YOUR GURU, a documentary about Tony Robbins and his experiential retreats. I watched it right before recording with Seth, and it leads us into a discussion about my own thoughts on "teachings" and gurudom. Because of my preacher past as well as my future desires for my life, I have for quite some time now, run from the moniker of “teacher” or “guru.” No matter what, it seems to keep coming up, especially from those with a religious past. Well, I don’t want to be your teacher or your guru. Maybe as Seth suggests, it’s because of my ego holding me back from embracing who I am, or maybe it’s not who I am because it’s not who I want to be. I don’t believe in needing teachers or gurus. I believe that as we live our lives, there are guides that pop up when we need them. When we are in need of something, we search it out. It may come in many forms, relationships, books, or people. These guides may very well hold the title of “teacher” or “guru” but they are there for a time, and then meant to be let go of as we move on. In my opinion, the trap of many religions, gurus, teachers or experiences come in the "high" we get from experience with them. We then become addicts of the high and continue to go back to them for far too long. Chasing ladders and climbing minutia to try and appease the addiction. Seth comes from a far different place than I do and is really into a form of trauma therapy that he calls Energy Intuitive Healing and Rapid Transformation Therapy. It involves native American practice as well as traditional psychotherapy practices at an accelerated rate. At my best understanding, I consider it Meta-Physical Healing, with Mystic Practices, and Exorcism. None of which I am generally interested in for myself, mainly due to the amount of thought trauma it represents to me and the fear of finding myself climbing ladders to reach places or "Nirvana's" other people think I need to reach. I know you'll enjoy this conversation, it's a tough one. Uncomfortable Conversations with Gregory

Life coaching is an industry notoriously rampant with frauds and con artists who spout magic and creates cycles of dependency in the clients who come to them for help with their personal problems. They rarely teach systematic solutions and genuinely help people reach new levels of independent thinking. Their income depends on their clients coming back to them over and over for more coaching, instead of moving on to greater things. Marc Mawhinney is a coach who coaches coaches, helping them build better business models and promote themselves in their quests to tell other people how to live. He joins Gregory to discuss what’s right and what’s wrong with this strange and modern industry.   According to Marc, a professional coach is just someone who helps someone else accomplish a specific goal. Marc believes that coaches who offer real value in the attainment of strategic goals should price their services on packages related to those goals, not act as an ongoing crutch for emotional support. Lesser-known life coaches fall into the trap of mimicking the actions and personalities of the big players in the industry. After the release of Tony Robbins’ recent documentary, I Am Not Your Guru, coaches across the industry seemed to adopt his salty language and outgoing personality overnight. Clients who seek out life coaches should work with them for a finite amount of time to overcome a specific obstacle, so that they avoid the temptation to fall into a dependency cycle with their influence. The goal of any truly good teacher, mentor, guru, or master is to obsolete himself, so that his student, mentee, apprentice, or Padawan rises up to replace or surpass him. Even parents are subject to addiction to their social authority, being unwilling to step back when the time is right. The coaching industry, as a whole, is suspicious because legitimately talented guides are lumped into the same category as overhyped motivational speakers, deluded people channelling fallacious spiritual entities, cult phenomenon, and outright con artists. The good teachers who are in a position to help people make huge leaps forward in their personal lives become overshadowed and stereotyped. The single most important qualification a life coach can have is not their age, their price, their popularity, or any specific certification. It is their success at a specific task they claim to have mastery with. If they have done the thing you wish to be able to do, and have the skill of teaching, it may be a worthwhile endeavour to learn from them. The B&E Podcast #068 "Making the Most of Your Champions & Challengers" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Our paths as artists are not all rosy nor are they all gloom. We have our fair share of supporters and people/organizations who will test us with their views and opinions. When we learn to welcome all of it as part of our growth, we get closer in touch with ourselves, our values and what we want to express. POINT #1: "DON'T FIGHT THE CYNICS" -Oftentimes we come across ideas and people who are seemingly in conflict with what we think or believe or are trying to do -- when we let go of the need to be right and are able to listen to the message we are being communicated, we find an opportunity to connect with our values and beliefs on a deeper level -- potentially discovering new avenues and strength. POINT #2: "AS ARTISTS WE ARE ENGAGED WITH THE MYSTERY OF CREATION" -There is no technique in any craft or discipline that can take the place of our curiosity, our passionate ideas or the fire of our desire. Art and the creative space is not tied to technical skill or intellectual construct. POINT #3: "ARTISTS ARE CRITICAL THINKERS" -As an artist, part of our role is to be engaged with the messages from media, friends, family, strangers etc. and formulate our own opinions in a critical way to be expressed back to the world. It doesn't matter where you started from, Lisa shares her story that you can rise above and live the life you always wanted by learning from your mistakes and putting the work into it. Long description: Ever since my husband and I watched Tony Robbins in the documentary I Am Not Your Guru a few months ago, we've become major Tony Robbins fans. Whenever we need a pick me up, we just turn on his podcast and immediately get inspired. Yesterday, I was working all day at home and I decided to leave the house to clear my head. I turned on his podcast to get me out of my funk, and you know what it was all about? The theme was changing your story to change your life. If your story is you're fat, well if you stop making excuses and start eating better and working out, you'll change your life. If your story is you're poor, stop complaining that you were born with less and figure out a way to make more money. Which is exactly what Lisa talks about in our interview together. She started out in a lower income family living in a trailer park. She was told she wouldn't be able to go to college or live a different life when she was an adult, and for a while she believed it. But then something clicked and she realized that where she came from wasn't her destiny. And she is living proof of this by graduating college, working a high-paying job and buying a home like she always dreamed of. If you're looking for a good kick in the pants podcast episode to give you that push to stop complaining and start doing, this is it! The B&E Podcast #060 "The Point Where Art Can No Longer Be Quantified" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: This one dives into the reasons why we get into creating art and finding meaning in what we're doing. If it we're creating art entirely for some kind of quantified reward, then what is the point? In the end, it's all about the love. Listen to know how it gets there! POINT #1: "THE ICEBERG" -Not of the Titanic variety, but of the metaphorical sort. Think of your creative career as an iceberg -- There is a whole ton of substance and work that is below the surface, that most people will NEVER see, but it is all necessary for that little piece to show at the top. POINT #2: "QUANTIFYING OUR WORK CHAINS US DOWN" -When we're basing the value of our work based on external success, while being of some worth, ultimately it creates fear and restriction when we need to be free to create. Trusting ourselves and not placing external demands on our work allows us to create more authentically. POINT #3: "EVERYTHING IS ABOUT LOVE" -The title sums it up. Everything we do in our lives and in our art is about love and all the complications and obstacles we place around it. Find and connect to the love in your work and everything else will become clear. The Gems are being their multitasking selves — they are doing their hair and sitting by the fire for this recording, so there are some interesting background noises. Ginger just listened to Oscar Perez's The Making of Men interview on KVMR (see link below), so the Gems discuss masculinity, the caricature of machismo, and that the idea of "men" and "women" is more about emotional maturity rather than the adolescent ideas of what men and women are. Our society has a lot of "advanced-age boys" and "advanced-age girls" as it is obsessed with staying in the light, although development and maturity are achieved by doing the deeper work and getting broken down in the darkness. Ginger is in a dark abyss right now, and she shares a bit about moving through it, embracing it, and enjoying the work. (Sneak peek: in upcoming episode 21 she shares more specifics). As it is the holidays, Kat and Ginger do talk about mistletoe, but the conversation quickly turns to masturbation. The ladies discuss stoking the fire in yourself and doing that with a lover. What are things we can do to be in a juicy space? How do you romance yourself? Only we can keep ourselves in a juicy, creative space.   In typical Gemini fashion, there are many references in this episode. Friday night, Gisele and I stayed in and watched I AM NOT YOUR GURU, the new documentary about Tony Robbins on Netflix.    To be honest, I wanted to watch something else but Gisele was insistent because Tony is one of her heroes. And I have to say that it was one of the most engaging and inspiring movies I've ever seen.   Here are three reasons why you should watch it (even if you're not a Tony Robbins fan):   Advanced Communication Skills: In the movie, you’ll watch Tony go through some unbelievable situations with some of his attendees. You’ll watch how Tony is able to cause a state change in the person he’s speaking with. It’s simply incredible to watch Tony navigate tough situations with empathy, grace and control. You’ll also see how he’s able to help people with their struggles on the spot. Although I’ve enjoyed some of Tony’s CDs in the past, I’ve never been to one of his events. And I wouldn’t call myself a “true fan.” But after watching, him in action at his Date With Destiny seminar, I’ve made it a point to attend one of his live trainings to experience it for myself.   Simplification: If you're like me, you might sometimes tend to overanalyze things. (Or always overanalyze things haha)   When you watch this movie, you’ll get a first hand look at how simply the human brain is wired. ...and how it's really the "little things" that make the biggest differences.    I think you’ll find this especially inspiring! It’s being surrounded by like-minded people, making friends, exercise, trust and having a plan is. You just may come away feeling like, “I can totally do this!”   Motivation And Inspiration: Which is weird ...because it's not a motivational movie. Motivation is not the point of it at all, actually.   It’s really an inside look into one of Tony's $5,000 Date With Destiny events.   But I challenge you to watch it and not feel motivated and inspired. I shed a few tears watching as well.   What I advise you to do is to watch it and immediately after write down your health & fitness goals for the week. And make them habit-based like: I will take a walk every day or I will workout with weights 3 times this week.     Anyway - I just wanted to share it with you.    I think it's only on Netflix for now and totally worth the watch.   Have a great week!   Ted

Ted Ryce: How To Become A Successful Public Speaker Part 2 I’m back with a part 2 of how to become a successful speaker. Alan had some follow up questions so of course I obliged! Hey Ted,   Thanks for getting back to me. That is an awesome idea! So the questions I have include:   What skills do you need to work on daily to become a great public speaker? Do you have any courses or books you recommend?   How do you land your first public speaking gig? What should you charge, how do you charge as you get better?  How do you calculate speaking prices?   How do you prepare for a talk?    How can you create a public speaking conference or workshop with other speakers who can compliment your services and value you offer? How do you sell a conference to get a good turnout at your event?   How do you make yourself memorable to the audience you are speaking to? How do you convert public speaking audiences to your programs or services?    These are some of the questions I had off the top of my head with respect to become a speaker. I look forward to the podcast on this. Will you let me know when it will be released? I am looking to start speaking soon for free as leverage to promote my business and add value.    Keep up the great work!!   Thank You!   Question: What skills do you need to work on daily to become a great public speaker? Do you have any courses or books you recommend? Answer: I’ve already talked about Thomas Plummer’s Public Speaking Course, Toastmasters, and Improv Acting Classes. You should do a Google search for public speaking seminars in your area as well. Dale Carnegie has courses all around the country. I’ve also heard great things about Michael Port’s speaking seminar. Here are some resources to get you started: - You may not have heard of Roger but he’s helped the who’s who of celebrities. I watched the Tony Robbins Netflix documentary I Am Not Your Guru and he was doing the vocal warm ups found in this CD. - by Garr Reynolds - by Garr Reynolds - Nancy Duarte’s Ted Talk:   Question: How do you land your first public speaking gig? What should you charge, how do you charge as you get better?  How do you calculate speaking prices? Answer: I’ve done a few seminars and talks before but I’ll tell you how I landed my first speaking gig since I’ve been serious about speaking. I interviewed Aaron Marino of I Am Alpha M and after the talk I said I liked his message and thought he was a good guy. We continued talking and he told me about StyleCon and asked me to speak at it. The way I landed my first keynote was a bit different. I connected with a person who had been listening to my podcast. We ended up talking and I offered her some assistance on a problem she had. I never expected anything back. Then she said there was an event that she was a part of and they needed a speaker. She had been listening to the podcast and remembered that I wanted to do more public speaking. She connected me with the event planner and we spoke on the phone…and boom! I had my first paid keynote speech! Question: How do you prepare for a talk?  Answer: Great question! First, I ask the event planner a LOT of questions about the attendees and what their ideal outcome would be from my talk. Then, Gisele and I work to create a flow of the talk and she helps design a slide show to supplement the presentation. (A quick note about slides…the slides should augment your presentation. But it’s about you and the way to communicate with the audience. NOT the slides!) After we have the rough draft, I run through the talk over and over refining the flow of the talk as well as the slide presentation. I practice one or two times a day EVERY day leading up to my talk. And I do what it takes to be prepared. Practice, practice, practice! That’s the key! Lastly, I memorize the flow of the talk but I don’t memorize the talk. If you’re trying to remember the exact words then it will take you out of flow. And your audience can feel that. At the end of the day, it’s about creating an authentic connection. Not regurgitating content. I do my best to tell stories and entertain while delivering the best information I have. Question: How can you create a public speaking conference or workshop with other speakers who can compliment your services and value you offer? How do you sell a conference to get a good turnout at your event? That’s outside of my experience so far. I recommend that you connect with other speakers and on put something together locally. Promote it on social media and through your content beforehand to see if anyone is interested. Question: How do you make yourself memorable to the audience you are speaking to? How do you convert public speaking audiences to your programs or services?  The answer to your first question is to strive to master the art of public speaking. Be a student of the art and read all the books and articles you can. And attend all the seminars and courses you can. Most importantly: get out there and speak! The answer to your seconds question is a little different. I know what you’re asking but I want to tell you this. You cannot “convert” anyone. Marketing is becoming less and less effective. I know you didn’t mean it like that but I wanted to say it out loud. People are smart and you can’t convert them or change their mind. THEY change their minds based on what you have to offer. What you CAN do is to deliver the best information you have in the most powerful way possible. After that, you offer the opportunity to work with you. Ask them to come and see you at the back of the room if they’d like to talk more. Then you offer what you have. And the best “sales” advice I’ve ever received is from Zig Ziglar in his Secrets of Closing the Sale. You can listen to it for free on Youtube: Conclusion At the end of the day, becoming a successful public speaker is like anything else. It requires drive, discipline, developing the skills, time and hard work! I hope this serves you well and puts you on the right path towards speaking success!
