The Business Side of Music
#329 - Build, Maintain, and Grow

The Business Side of Music

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2024 49:44

When it comes to such simple things as communication, networking, and even relationships, there are three basic skills you need to remember. You need to build upon the relationship. You also need to maintain them, and work towards them growing. Joining us in the studio is music industry veteran Lyn Stevens who is an award winning photographer, who combines her love of photography with her passion for music. From that, she has learned the ability to network among industry peers, and shares her insight with our listeners. While on the subject, we also discuss documenting your career with photography, and how important it is in the bigger picture. Since her days as a producer at WIBA-FM and Morning DJ & Country Music Director WDUX in Wisconsin, Lyn has always had the bug to work in the music industry. Working in radio provided Lyn the opportunity to meet and interview legendary performers such as Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, and The Kentucky Headhunters among many others. After moving to Nashville in 2009, her photography "hobby" started catching the eye of local performers. In 2012, the door was opened as Lyn was honored to have 3 of her photos on display as part of the Cameras and Community in Action Project at The Frist Center for The Visual Arts. Her work went on to be featured in Country Weekly, Billboard Magazine and the Nashville Music Guide. In late 2014, she was asked by country legends, Little Texas, to shoot the photos for their album, "Young for A Long Time," which garnered her the award for "Best Visual Art" at the 2015 Nashville Independent Music Awards. She added the title, “International Photographer” to her resume, after documenting a Blues/Rock tour to Australia in 2016 and another tour to Iceland in 2018. Her work has since been seen on television in Australia and in newspapers and magazines throughout Europe. She approaches photography as a documentarian, based off the strong belief that she is documenting future history, in the present-day moment. In our episode this week I'm so grateful to have my first guest here in my home studio. We met working together on a project for Pinterest, and I was immediately drawn to his spiritual approach to making art. My guest, called the “Warhol of the 21st century” is Anderson - an international photographer, and producer fascinated by the power of perception. Obsessed with the construction of environments, Anderson's work explores the intersection of emotional experience and sensory response associated to place. We discuss many of our shared connections. We both have a background in fashion and beauty, and both experienced complete life transformations by making unexpected international moves.   We have a conversation about learning “who you are” at the core, how to manifest something out of nothing, and how seeing different perspectives in life inform you as an individual. We then get into the creation process and what it means to dip into the divine, and create art from a place of source and spirit versus ego.  Anderson has a unique background in mathematics, which acts as a backbone to his flâneur mentality. Though his body of work exists suspended amidst abstract realism, provocative undertone and gilded, dream-like whimsy, it also provides subtext to be enjoyed on simpler terms. Anderson's commercial photography, productions, and talent activations can be seen in international publications and campaigns around the globe. Anderson currently resides in New York City and works on projects worldwide. Alinka Echeverría: HeroineOctober 26 – December 10, 2020Kathleen O. Ellis GalleryWith great pleasure, Light Work presents Heroine, a solo exhibition of work by Mexican-British multimedia artist and visual anthropologist Alinka Echeverría. Heroine is the culmination of the artist’s extensive research into the representation of women and femininity since the origins of the medium of photography. “With few exceptions, the place of women was before the lens, not behind it,” she acknowledges. As Echeverría immersed herself in the colonial archives of the Nicéphore Nièpce Museum in France, work she embarked on in 2015, the aesthetics of the fetishized and exoticized depiction of women both intrigued and appalled her. Directly referencing the “inventor of photography,” Nicéphore Niépce, Echeverría titles this work more broadly as Fieldnotes for Nicéphora (incorporating the “a” at the end to feminize the name that he had adopted for its meaning: victorious)—thereby explicitly reframing the legacy of this white, male pioneer of photography to a feminist and postcolonial perspective. We are mindful of installing the exhibition amidst an ongoing global pandemic, as we all work to reimagine how physical gallery spaces exist (or don’t) and perhaps expand how works on walls may take on new forms. With that in mind, Echeverría has opened up the ways in which she would normally exhibit photographic work in a gallery. She revisits past collage work innovatively, re-adapting stills from a video piece as large-scale photographic prints and pages from a photobook project, brought to life here as a continuous stream of images wrapping around three of the gallery walls.Echeverría reframes the photographs to examine how she can alter their purpose both through their context and materiality. “As a link between the past and the present, the photographic archive makes time resurface by way of stored visual forms,” Echeverría explains. “In my view, an active reframing allows them to acquire a certain contemporaneity with the new interpretations brought by our contemporary gazes as practitioners and viewers.” Echeverría’s works in Heroine are both visually arresting and profoundly thoughtful—urging viewers to investigate the complexities of the photographic object itself as well as the ways in which its creation, reproduction, and distribution has been problematic since the early 1800s.—Alinka Echeverría is a Mexican-British artist and visual anthropologist working in multiple media. She holds a Master’s degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh, 2004 (Erasmus exchange, Università di Bologna, 2003). After working on HIV prevention projects in rural East Africa, she completed a post-graduate degree in Photography from the International Center for Photography in New York in 2008. She has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Arles’ Les Rencontres de la Photographie, The California Museum of Photography, Johannesburg Art Gallery, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and Preus Museum (Norway’s National Museum of Photography). She is the recipient of the 2020 MAST Foundation for Photography Grant and in recent years she has received the BMW Art & Culture Residency at the Nicéphore Niépce Museum, as well as FOAM Museum’s Talent award, and the HSBC Prize for Photography. The Lucie Awards voted her International Photographer of the Year and she was a finalist for the Musée de l’Elysée’s Prix Elysée for mid-career artists. Several public collections and institutions hold her work, including BMW Art & Culture France, FOAM Museum, Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, LACMA, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Musée de l’Elysée, Musée Nicéphore Niépce, and the Swiss Foundation of Photography. In 2017 she was the presenter for a three-part series for BBC Four called The Art That Made Mexico.—Special thanks to Daylight Blue Mediadaylightblue.comLight Worklightwork.orgMusic: "Adrift" and "Resonance" by Airtone See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Have you always believed that you are worth far more than your physical attributes?   Or are you just one of those plagued down by negativity about your own body image?     Yes, society dictates what beauty is, but only when you allow it yourself.   Take it from Argentina Leyva,  an International Photographer and Founder of the Art of Seduction Boudoir.   For Argentina, it all clicked when she worked up the courage to step in front of the camera wearing nothing but black, lacey lingerie for her very first boudoir shoot. Leaving her engineering career behind, she's spent the last decade photographing over 3,000 women, capturing their self-acceptance liberations. Argentina's two boudoir studios in Austin, TX, and Chicago, IL and women's retreats hosted in exotic locations like Bali, Fiji, and Cozumel help women in their 40s, 50s and beyond, to feel confident, sexy and totally transformed. Her latest project is a book and collection of retreats, called Bolder Beyond 50. Through this project, Leyva will capture the stories and photos of women who are leaping into the best years of their lives.   In this episode, Argentina shares from her experience of photographing 3000 women and what she has learned about accepting and appreciating ourselves just as we are, regardless of size, skin color, height, weight, or anything else.      What you will learn from this episode:   Discover about Argentina's experience that tremendously redefined her concept of beauty and catapulted her self-confidence to new heights  Learn about the mindset that will help you get past your insecurities about body image and highlight your strengths as a woman in more ways than one Find out what Boudoir Photography is and how it helps boost a woman's self-esteem at any age, at any time, and whatever size she is   “Confidence, feeling worthy and feeling good enough is so essential for any woman to achieve her dreams.” - Argentina Leyva     Topics Covered:   01:45 - Getting into women's issue on  confidence and body image 07:03 -  Biggest mistake women make to boost their self-confidence before they seek out help 09:48 - One free actionable tip to overcome body image negativity 12:57 - One valuable free resource that can help you take action to overcome the challenge of negative body image 14:26 - Why boudoir photography session helps you in your career and life?     Key Takeaways:    “The biggest fear that we have is that we're not going to like what we see, that we're going to look ridiculous. Another reason would be thinking that you had to do this for a husband or a boyfriend, and honestly, it has to be done for yourself.” - Argentina Leyva   “Our number one source of lack of confidence is the way we look. When you go after that and you do something that helps you feel good about your body, you stop defining yourself by your looks but define yourself by your achievements, and you define your worthiness on your own terms, and not let anyone else define who you are, then you become very powerful.”  - Argentina Leyva   “When you really work in knowing yourself, then you can start to make decisions out of the desire to become the best version of yourself. To do this, you have to go inside of you, to the darkest places and discover what is holding you back.” - Argentina Leyva “Only the people that actually dare to go into the darkest places can actually start to see the light to come out of it.” - Argentina Leyva     People / Resources Mentioned: “Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead” by Brene Brown     Ways to Connect with Argentina Leyva:   Website: https://www.artofseductionchicago.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ArtOfSeductionBoudoir Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artofseductionboudoir/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/argentina-leyva-7789783 Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ArgentinaLeyva   Ways to Connect with Sarah E.
