Auto - Rund ums Auto.

Over his 25 years as CEO of the Danish textile company Kvadrat, Anders Byriel has turned what was once a small, fairly dusty family design business into a global giant. Perhaps just as notably, he's taken a radical, and even artistic, approach to building and cultivating the brand's culture, partnering with designers such as Raf Simons, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and Peter Saville; arts institutions like the New Museum in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark; and brands including Adidas Originals, Bang & Olufsen, and Jaguar Land Rover. On this week's episode of Time Sensitive, Byriel talks about why the best design has an artistic edge, the importance of making space for emotion within a corporate environment, and his deep and lifelong passions of poetry and photography.Special thanks to our Season 7 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Anders Byriel [01:04]Annie Ernaux [04:25]“Vermeer” at the Rijksmuseum [06:04]Kvadrat [06:56]Raf Simons [12:05]Peter Saville [13:24]David Adjaye [14:05]Thomas Demand [14:14]Louisiana Museum of Modern Art [14:17]Rosemarie Troeckel [14:20]Olafur Eliasson [14:27]Jean Nouvel [14:40]Massimiliano Gioni [18:06]Pipilotti Rist [18:39]Wu Tsang [19:07]“The Triple Folly” [19:33]Danh Vo [24:20]Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec [27:09]Giulio Ridolfo [30:41]“Materializing Color” [30:43]Adidas Originals x Kvadrat Stan Smith [39:03]Konstantin Grcic [43:06]Verner Panton [49:29]“Pop Art Design” exhibition at Vitra Design Museum [50:20]Robert Adams [01:03:08]Henrik Nordbrandt [01:03:52]Nan Goldin [01:10:39]Ocean Vuong [01:04:54]Ocean Vuong's “Time Is a Mother” book of poems [01:05:01]“Your Brain on Art” book [01:05:09]Hiroshi Sugimoto [01:11:37]“Ai Weiwei In the Elevator When Taken Into Custody by the Police” (2009) [01:12:00]Ansel Adams [01:12:44]Robert Adams's “Around the House” book [01:13:01]Robert Adams's "A Road Through Shore Pine" book [01:13:30]

Tom talks with innovation leader and brand builder Gavin Ivester. Gavin is the former Vice President of Design for Bang & Olufsen, the beloved maker of artful audio equipment and televisions. Gavin talks about creating a principle driven design strategy that delivered double-digit growth in a painfully competitive market, how he started at Apple where he was employee number 2,454, and how he made the change from forklift driver to designer of the original PowerBook. Gavin also speaks about the breakthrough design decision of the PowerBook that's impacted every laptop since, the implications of design principles, how "honesty in materials" promotes sustainability and superior customer experience, how great design and great craftsmanship together create longevity and explain why it can be worth paying $20k for a TV. Gavin also discusses what he learned at Puma where his career shifted from design to product as head of the footwear division, and why licensing can be a sinkhole for your brand equity. Tom ends with a discussion of "the shadow" and how it's reflected in industrial design and managing your life as a product, and Gavin takes us home by talking about the implications of having a successful career on raising children, and what products he loves.

Part two is coming next week, and last year’s still-relevant installments are here and here. Now, hope you’re prepared for an outrageously long episode recap...   PARENTS! My mom has requested “a new hobby” for Christmas which has sent me spinning. Any ideas? She’s very artsy and already gardens and writes fiction. He likes food/eating/cooking but had a heart attack 3 years ago so we’re not allowed to do fun things (unless they’re low sodium/cholesterol). Usually I try to find an activity (movie, bike, ride to brewery, etc.) but covid makes that hard. So many restrictions!! Claire puts her airpods through the laundry all the time and they still work! This week, Bill features a client case study! Chin Beckman is the owner of DSP Concepts, an audio platform powering over 40 million of the world’s best devices and the leading supplier to top tier brands in automotive and consumer products like Tesla, GoPro, and Bang & Olufsen, among others. They recently closed a round of Series B funding last month, which saw investments from leaders in the industry like BMW, Porsche, MediaTek Ventures, and more.   Chin Beckman and her husband, Paul, both work on the business together. Chin credits herself with helping Paul get into MIT because Paul used to copy her math homework in high school. Paul studied signal processing under two prestigious professors in the industry, Professor Oppenheim and Dr. Bose. This early start set them up to understand the mathematics and wave formats of how audio systems work.   Chin has taken on the role of CEO and has helped with the fundraising as well as the business development side of DSP Concepts. Paul has taken on the technology development and engineering role in the company. Chin says she is a reluctant CEO, but she knew she needed help and that’s why she reached out to Bill shortly after they raised the needed funding.   Chin shares why GoPro originally approached them. Since a lot of their customer base is jumping out of planes and doing extreme sports, the audio quality is critical. No one wants to hear themselves in a wind tunnel, so DSP worked with them on developing wind noise reduction technology. They needed a sound system that could handle 100 miles per hour.   Interview Links: dspconcepts.com   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? (00:47) A.P.

(00:40) Bang & Olufsen synker dybere ned i mudderet. Skattelettelser? Iværksætteri? Glem det. The buzzing as the fly desperately tries to escape the maze of my mother-in-law’s house sounds like a man leaning on a jackhammer in downtown LA.Of course, I’ve heard the sound thousands of times, only today, as someone that doesn’t drink alcohol, I listen to it, I find empathy with it, and I pose the question, “ Why does it make me want to stand in the middle of a busy Fairway?”In ‘Nature’, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s first treatise, he says: “Good thoughts are no better than good dreams unless they are executed!” But the thought does come first, and when I was drinking, my thoughts did need executing, but not in the form of affirmative action, but at the end of a rope. “Thoughts! You are to be hanged until you are dead, dead, dead!”Today, I am switched on. I am like a locomotive, when before I was a man eaten alive by irrational motive. I am a set of Bose cans screwed into a Bang & Olufsen sound system, when before I was those foam things plugged into a Sony Walkman, spouting nonsense that belonged in a toilet cistern.Back then it was about me.Today, it’s about you.And you.You.You.And You.Back to my old buddy Ralph, and he was on to something. Thoughts turn into feelings that turn into actions - and for that sequence to knit together like DNA you need awarenesses of self and the surrounding world, acceptance of your ailments, and the bravery and courage to commit to change. And you get that by making a choice. One choice. To stop drinking alcohol.Look, man, I know that it feels strange; that you think all of your friends will think you’re deranged, and you are the white outline hanging at the end of the shooting range. But it's time you changed. What changes when you become someone that doesn’t drink alcohol?Everything.Everything man.Striver Glynis asks, “I read somewhere that a good question to ask yourself is: “what does my life look like before alcohol, and what does my life look like after alcohol?” I can’t get my head around the question… What do you make of it? Is it simply an answer like “Before I have my first drink I am feeling ‘xyz’… and after I drink a bottle of wine I say hurtful things, and my head hurts,” or do you think it goes deeper? The whole picture of life with or without alcohol? I really like the question and am pondering over the answer in relation to my ‘whole life’ before and after…And that’s what we talk about in today’s podcast.

A new iOS and Android mobile interface to manage smart locks, for family members to easily lock or unlock a door, add or delete users, and grant temporary home access. All security zones are now available in a single interface and simplifies the management of all the security zones in the smart home, including the ability to close a gate or a garage door with a single tap. A new searchable event-history agent that records security incidents throughout the home to provide a sequenced and contextual understanding of activity, which in turn can be used to inform homeowners via mobile alerts and push-notifications that are timely and relevant.   Control4 has also announced new “experience” drivers that help simplify programming for highly-personal experiences inside of a Control4 Smart Home. LP Smart Products Collaborates With Elite Home Theater Seating To Design Smart Seating Of The Future Leggett & Platt Smart Products announced a collaboration with Elite Home Theater Seating Inc. at CEDIA EXPO to create technology-enabled, high-end theater chairs that can detect human occupancy. The LPConnect Package can be implemented into any piece of home furniture and includes several customizable features including auto stop safety control, easy integration with existing automation systems, memory presets, and control over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth low energy, and Zigbee.   When implemented into Elite's theater chairs, individual preferences can be stored into memory presets using LPSense and LPConnect. Its LPSense technology uses capacitive sensing to detect human presence and trigger actions based on activity, such as playing or pausing a movie when the user gets in or out of the theater chair. The chair and other connected furniture can also be programmed to adjust room settings with its LPConnect technology. Fibaro gesture control and first Wi-Fi-enabled doorbell/intercom/security camera To enable gesture control of devices connected to Fibaro's Home Center 2 Z-Wave hub, the company developed a battery-operated panel that can be placed behind picture frames, behind walls or under countertops to sense the capacitance of a moving hand. The panel recognizes six gestures: up, down, left, right, circle left, and circle right. It also recognizes combinations of gestures. Consumers would program in the devices or scenes that a gesture would control. The panel, called the Swipe, will be available the end of November at a targeted $149.   The company's first intercom/doorbell with integrated camera features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Power over Ethernet. The device, called the Fibaro Intercom, gets power from an existing doorbell system. It uses motion and sound sensing to launch 4K video recording, sends doorbell video over Wi-Fi for in-house or remote viewing on a mobile device, and incorporates Bluetooth. With Bluetooth, the Intercom senses when an authorized user's phone is within a set range, then automatically sends a 12-volt signal to unlock a connected electronic lock. Also to unlock a connected electronic lock, users rotate the device's bezel to enter a numeric security code. It will be available in December at around $500. Kaleidescape Unveils Strato 4K HDR Movie Player, New Alto Players, Terra Server The award-winning Kaleidescape Strato is the world's first and only 4K Ultra HD high-dynamic-range movie player. The Strato onscreen user interface is also displayed in 4K Ultra HD, at 60 frames per second, resulting in fluid animation and a stunning visual impact.   Strato can be purchased with or without an internal 6 TB hard drive that can store up to 100 4K Ultra HD movies, 150 Blu-ray quality movies, or 900 DVD quality movies. Terra also provides computing and caching services that enhance the performance of Strato and Alto players. A single Terra can simultaneously serve up to seven 4K movies, or up to 15 Blu-ray quality movies. Sonos Over in the whole-house audio category, wireless category leader Sonos is not resting on its past accomplishments. A few weeks ago the company introduced its new Play:5 active loudspeaker that incorporates new drivers, amplification, crossover networks and a new industrial design. Headlining its software tweaks, the company has added its TruePlay auto room equalization technology.   Demonstrating the technology, Sonos asks dealers to watch a quick video that shows how simple the EQ is. Taking approximately 55 seconds, TruePlay uses the microphone in users' iOS devices to measure room interactions. Once completed, TruePlay cleans up common sound issues such as muddy bass and smeared top end. Summing up the technology, Sonos states it underscores its pursuit of “pure musical truth.” The tenets of its musical truth include full-frequency clarity, stereo imaging and well defined bass performance.

In a private room on the top floor of Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, hordes of glamorous and mainly very young Chinese women (and the odd man) are packed around a Steinway piano on a stage in the middle of the room. Blow-dried, designer-clad with shopping bags at their feet, they’re drinking champagne and nibbling canapés, excitedly anticipating the evening's star attraction. ... Classical musicians have long been considered dusty, dry figures, but in China, 31-year-old Yundi and his more internationally known rival Lang Lang are treated as rock stars. They've inspired what's being called “piano fever; an estimated 50 million young Chinese now learn the instrument that until recently was banned as “decadent”. Hordes of fans follow Yundi (born Li Yundi) wherever he goes. In last year's Chinese classical music charts, he had 11 albums in the top 15, while his latest recording of Beethoven's sonatas went platinum – two feats unprecedented not just in the classical world, but in the entire Chinese music market. A one-billion-strong audience watched his televised performance at the Chinese Spring Festival Gala, with 10,000 in the auditorium. On Weibo (China’s Twitter) he has 14.5 million followers, who react in fury to anyone who dares even mildly criticise their hero, and is one of the top 10 Chinese celebrities discussed on the service. When he announced his idol was Chopin, the dead composer's biography began racing up the Chinese book charts. He advertises Rolex and Bang & Olufsen and is the “image ambassador” to Super Boys – China's answer to Pop Idol. Last year his Dream Tour – the largest classical tour in Chinese history – took in 33 cities, with tickets selling out in only 12 minutes. “Nobody had ever done anything like this before,” says Yundi, sitting in a hotel bar, the morning after the Harvey Nichols showcase. In China, Yundi leads a superstar lifestyle, even though he lists his hobbies as “drinking tea and listening to jazz. Based in Beijing, he hangs out with actors, models and singers (the Chinese media has long speculated about his alleged gay relationship with a Taiwanese pop star, though I'm reliably informed he has a girlfriend). ... Everything changed in 2000 when he beat 93 contestants to the Chopin prize. “Suddenly I was a national hero, meeting our prime minister and president, everyone’s attention is on me, it was all engagements, interviews, invitations.” He signed with Deutsche Grammophon, but refused the expected route of non-stop touring and recording, instead moving to Hanover for five years’ more study. “I wanted to slowly develop, to focus without disturbance.” DG was frustrated by his reluctance to cash in. Yundi smiles. “Practising for six hours a day, so much time alone with yourself, just with music. It makes me very strong.” While most classical musicians are pushed into playing any and every genre in an attempt to woo the masses, Yundi refuses to dilute his repertoire. “I don't do crossover, I don't change my style,” he says firmly. “I share what I do with young people; if they want different music they can find it in a different area.” It's hard not to read such comments as digs at Lang Lang, Yundi's long-standing rival and exact contemporary. Rumour has it that Lang Lang's father reportedly told one symphony orchestra manager that his son would not play with them if a future concert was booked with Yundi and in 2009 the boy from Beijing had Yundi dropped by Universal (Deutsche's parent label), saying the label only had room for one Chinese pianist. The following year, however, Lang Lang defected to Sony. In a counter-strike, Yundi returned to Universal for $3 million, the exact figure that tempted Lang Lang to defect. Lang Lang's “team” is said to be responsible for scurrilous rumours about Yundi's personal life. Now the Chinese media gleefully pits the pair against each other, like the Beatles versus the Stones. While flashy Lang Lang is the Party's and international favourite, the shyer – also seen as more poetic – Yundi is the Chinese people's favourite. As arts critic Norman Lebrecht summarises: “Lang Lang is a global brand, Yundi a national dish.” The mention of Lang Lang's name is the only time Yundi becomes mildly agitated. “I don't know him, we've been at the same event but we've never met, I've never seen him play,” he says. “Talent comes through the work. There's a lot of good talent out there and we support everybody.” He then adds, meaningfully, that his favourite pianists are Israeli. As I see it, Lang Lang relishes the spotlight – and the rivalry. Yundi, on the other hand, has become increasingly adept at playing the marketing game, but would be happier without it. “Only music can define me,” he says passionately. This may be so, but the flailing classical world is hyping him as a potential saviour, with all its focus being directed towards the Chinese market. Last year, 10 per cent of China's music sales were classical, and the figure is rising, compared with three per cent in the United States. “I'm very happy that so many children are learning the piano because of me,” Yundi says. “Music is magical and it shouldn't be something kept far away in a museum. It's like black and white in fashion, some people see it as boring, but it will never go out of style.”
