Selasi Gomado: Bridging Artists and Markets

Change Africa Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 27, 2025 68:50

This episode of the Change Africa podcast features Selasie Gomado, founder and creative director of Artematis, a Ghanaian art collective and agency driving the continent's artistic renaissance.Selasei begins by tracing his early love for drawing, stifled by familial expectations to pursue engineering, a path he followed until a post-university epiphany sparked Artematis. What started as an online art shop in 2018, born from a random thought in a car ride, has grown into a dynamic collective showcasing five artists globally, from London to Hong Kong.Selasie recounts the rocky early days—six months of no sales—until a friend's advice to tap into Ghanaians' love for experiences led to the first Full Moon Exhibition. With 300 attendees and a single sale, it was a modest validation that shifted Artematis toward events. The momentum of 2019 screeched to a halt with COVID-19, nearly ending the venture. But a personal brush with the virus in 2021 became a turning point. Bedridden and reflective, Selasie recommitted to managing artists full-time, quitting his engineering job after signing with Phillips Auction House for a landmark 2022 London show. The discussion pivots to the artists of Artematis—Hawa Awanle Ayiboro, Abdur Rahman Muhammad, Kwaku Yaro, James Mishio, and Courage Hunke—each pushing boundaries with unique materials and themes. From Hawa's vivid depictions of women's struggles to Courage's fusion of paper and plastic waste, Selasi highlights their growth from emerging to established talents. He reflects on the challenge of balancing structure with creative chaos, a dance he navigates with patience and an open mind.Selasie situates Artematis within Ghana's thriving art scene, crediting pioneers like KNUST's arts department and galleries such as 1957 for creating “third spaces” that democratize art. Yet, he notes a persistent hurdle: local art collecting lags, with over 90% of sales to foreigners. The episode closes with a hopeful vision for African art's future—rooted in quality, documentation, and experimentation—underscoring Selasi's belief that its foundations are still being built.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Change Africa Podcast01:01 Selasi Gomadu and Artomatis: A Journey into Art03:01 The Evolution of Artomatis and Its Impact06:01 Challenges and Triumphs in the Art Scene09:04 Navigating the Art Market: Strategies and Insights12:00 The Role of Community in Artist Development15:03 Defining Great Art and the Artist's Journey17:59 Fostering Creativity and Managing Artists21:07 Success Stories and Growth in the Art Collective23:47 Behind the Scenes of Art Exhibitions26:56 Experimental Approaches in Contemporary Art30:00 The Future of Artomatis and the Ghanaian Art Scene35:50 Building Connections in the Art World39:38 Challenges in the Art Industry44:58 The Role of Galleries in Community Engagement47:03 The Evolving Culture of Art Collection in Ghana50:49 Supporting Artists' Mental Health53:39 Spotlight on Emerging Artists01:06:30 The Future of Art in AfricaFurther Reading and ResourcesTo explore Selasi's world further:Visit Artematis' website (assumed URL) for artist profiles and upcoming shows.Read Rebecca Ann Proctor's 2021 article that spotlighted Artematis, Explore Ghana's art scene through Gallery 1957 and Nubuke Foundation, key players mentioned by Selasi. Supporting Artists Whilst Changing The Marketplace In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent speaks with John Sewell, founder of Cosimo, an innovative online marketplace designed to help early-career and emerging artists showcase and sell their work. With over 1,200 artists already on the platform, Cosimo aims to make art more accessible and affordable while supporting artists through e-learning resources and strategic partnerships. Key Discussion Points: Cosimo's Unique Business Model Cosimo is designed to support artists in their early careers, offering free listings for artists with the option of paid subscriptions for enhanced features. Unlike traditional art marketplaces, Cosimo doesn't charge commission fees (which can range from 30% to 50% in the art industry). Instead, the revenue comes from artist subscriptions and corporate sponsorships. Buyers pay for shipping, which includes protection, similar to the Vinted model. Overcoming Fundraising Challenges As a first-time founder, John shares the tough lessons learned from raising funds through the Seedrs crowdfunding platform. It took two years to secure his first funding round, gaining 150+ investors who now form a valuable network. He also highlights the setbacks caused by delays from a micro VC and stresses the importance of contingency planning for future fundraising. Focusing on Marketplace Development While the platform initially concentrated on acquiring artists, the focus has shifted towards attracting buyers and proving market demand. John shares how content creation and social media are key to showcasing the artists' work, and discusses the development of e-learning resources to help artists improve their business skills. This shift is essential as Cosimo aims to create a sustainable and profitable business model before further investment. Technology and the Future John also looks to the future, exploring how technologies like AR/VR and AI can enhance the art-buying experience and create new revenue streams for artists. He envisions a world where AI helps more people tap into their creativity, ultimately expanding the market for Cosimo. John's Personal Growth as a Founder A lifelong learner, John relies on podcasts and mentorship to inspire new ideas and solve business problems. He finds walking while listening to podcasts particularly helpful and leverages AI tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and Midjourney to streamline various tasks. The support of other startup founders has also been instrumental in his journey. Gary Kramer, an accomplished wildlife biologist, photographer, and writer, who has captured the largest collection of waterfowl images, joins Ron Hayes and Mark Raycroft to discuss his new book, Waterfowl of the World. This 540-page book has close to 1,300 amazing waterfowl images. Gary shares the inspiration behind his project and the challenges he faced in photographing every species of waterfowl on the planet. They discuss the unique behaviors and adaptations of different waterfowl species, as well as the difficulty and patience required to capture the perfect shot. The conversation also touches on the diversity of locations Gary visited and the impact of his project on taxidermists and bird photographers. In this conversation, Gary Kramer discusses his experiences photographing birds around the world and shares stories of his trips where he encountered diverse bird species and had the opportunity to get up close and observe each species' unique behavior and characteristics.TakeawaysPhotographing every species of waterfowl on the planet is a challenging and time-consuming project that requires a deep understanding of waterfowl biology, photography skills, and planning.Different waterfowl species have unique behaviors and adaptations to their environments, which makes capturing their images even more fascinating. The project took Gary Kramer to diverse locations around the world, from remote islands to bustling cities, and each location presented its own set of challenges and opportunities. The book created from this project serves as a valuable reference tool for waterfowl biology and a training resource for bird photographers and taxidermists. The success rate for capturing quality images is relatively low, with only a small percentage of the photos taken making it into the final selection. Advancements in digital photography and the internet have made it easier for photographers to capture high-quality images and connect with people around the world.Being technologically ready is crucial for taking on big photography projects, as it allows photographers to push the boundaries and capture images in challenging conditions.Leading wildlife photography trips is a fulfilling way for photographers to share their passion and help others improve their skills.Gary Kramer is currently working on a new book titled 'Highways in the Sky: The North American Flyways,' which will focus on the major breeding, migration, and wintering areas for waterfowl in North America.Sound Bites"I've been doing it for 40 years. The vast majority of artists working today are not  well known or  well paid. And those artists with fewer resources  are often those with the greatest need for legal counsel, from protecting their intellectual property to drawing up contracts and more. In this episode, Amy Lehman, of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, and Jordan Miner Romanoff, of BNY Mellon, discuss the many ways in which pro bono lawyers can help support artists — and the arts.  PLI is proud to offer programs, Pro Bono Memberships, and scholarships to support the essential public service work of the legal profession.

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Laura Balducci calls herself an artist supporting artists “I still make my own art. I'm doing a solo show in February 2023, but I also have a little bit of extra energy and I'm not shy. I'm on a mission. The mission is to get as many artists out there, either in person or on the walls to share with the world. I really enjoy working with the artists and trying to get their work out there so that they can maybe spend more time in their studios and make more art to inspire more people,” she explained. “I help curate, design and put together different art shows or websites. If they want me to curate their website for them, I do that for all their pictures. I'm also a host for the artist. I try to get events or programs where I'm hosting an artist for something on the island, or off the island.” On June 24, Balducci helped put up Jane Newman's exhibition ‘Ordinary Magic' at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery. Then she set off for Lund, where Balducci helped curate Judith William's exhibition ‘Water/Colour' at the Tidal Arts Centre. Returning to Cortes Island, she helped install Lisa Gibbon's artwork in the Floathouse Restaurant. On Tuesday, July 5, she will be in the Cortes Island Museum, for the opening of Art in the Garden. “‘Art in the Garden' is at the museum in the heritage garden every Tuesday, starting July 5th to August 23rd, I have eight artists featured in the garden this summer season,” said Balducci. “They'll be working on either a medium inspired by the heritage garden, or a piece that they're working on in their studio. They'll be working on that piece from 12 to 3 every Tuesday. Visitors and locals will come and they can interact with the artist. They can bring their sketchbook and work alongside the artist. They can bring their lunch for a picnic in the gardens while the artist is working. And the artist is there to answer any questions.” Balducci talks about the three artists she most recently worked with in the podcast above: Jane Newman is a relatively new resident of Cortes Island and worked at the museum for 4 of the 5 years she has been here. She just retired to work full time on her artwork. While she has shown some of her artwork at Hollyhock, this exhibition at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery is her first solo exhibit on Cortes. Judith Willliams has been working on her current show for the past decade. She collected water samples from the Bute Inlet area prior to the recent landslide, and returned to gather more samples after the catastrophe. The resulting imagery, when this water was painted on paper, is striking. There was only room at the Tidal Art Centre for part of her collection, which will be unveiled in its totality at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery on August 26. Lisa Gibbons has been an artist all of her life and has a studio in Mansons Landing. “A lot of her work is inspired by the environment. She works mostly, but not exclusively, in acrylic, collage, gold leaf, and sometimes oil paints.” There is a sample at the top of this page. As regards her own art, Balducci said: “Right now, I'm working on fiber art. I've been making yarn and I would consider my yarn art yarn. It's very texturized. It's thin, it's chunky, it's everything in between. I've been making a lot of yarn. I've been designing and kniting items to wear.” “I've also been making buttons recently. I just got into making buttons made out of polymer clay. Each set of buttons is totally different. I have them for sale at the museum and also at the Townsite Public Market in Powell River. She will be the artist in residence at the Tidal Arts Centre in February, 2023.

I am rereleasing our sci-fi-tastic short story "Bring 'Em Back X-20" in celebration of the newest member of the Artists Supporting Artists family - Megan Tresca. Megan Tresca is an artist from Rhode Island. She holds a BFA in Painting and MAT in Art and Design Education from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has spent the last two years teaching fine art at The Winchendon School in Massachusetts. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Connecticut. She's captivated by things cryptic and mysterious. Her work acts as an enigmatic scenario; whether it be magical or gruesome. The unknown is enticing and serves as a major catalyst in her work. It’s common for her to go in with some idea of a blueprint but often lets the work improvise and dictate itself and take on a life of its own. Sometimes she even abandons original plans altogether, and just lets the ebb and flow of the moment create the work. The body of her work ranges from mystical lightness to the dreary and dark; allowing her to explore the full spectrum of the human experience. In this episode, I talk to the incredible painter, Susanna Coffey about her life and work. We dive into Susanna’s childhood, how she discovered art, the work she did with others during her time in school, feminism, her palette, her love of teaching, and so many other topics. I sincerely mean it when I say, I had such a wonderful time talking to Susanna and I’m positive that you will enjoy this interview.  Susanna Coffey’s portraits are investigations of the iconic human head. The work is driven by questions about what a portrait image can mean. What is a beautiful appearance? Why do conventionally gendered images involve caricature? Can inchoate feeling-states be adequately portrayed? Meticulously observed, most works show her in many guises and locations: under dramatic lighting, highly costumed, inside a studio, within landscapes, foliage, places of fiery devastation, and amidst phantasmagoric patterns. Some portraits seem almost entirely abstract with only the barest suggestion of a human face. Coffey’s artwork has been exhibited in many museums including The Weatherspoon Art Museum, The Aldrich Museum, The Hood Museum, The American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work is in the collections of The Yale University Art Gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Minneapolis Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C., The Karamay Museum of Art, Xinjiang China and Museum of Contemporary Art, Seville, Spain, among others. Among her awards are The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. In this episode, I talk to the CEO of Big Cartel, Anna Brozek, about selling work online and tips for artists on marketing. Some of you may use Big Cartel but for those that don’t or haven’t heard of it, Big Cartel is a technology company built by artists for artists. The company makes tools that are empowering, affordable, and easy-to-use in order to help more people make a living doing what they love. They are the home to over 1.5 million independent artists and makers from around the world, helping them sell more than $3 billion of their work directly to consumers.  Juliette Lewis, actually is on there and the company is 100% independently owned and the team vows to never sell. They are also a remote company which I think is cool with 37 employees across 17 states.   Anna Brozek is the first non-founder CEO of Big Cartel. She joined the company eight years ago, initially hired onto the marketing team after owning a beloved indie record shop in Salt Lake City with her husband. In that role, she nurtured the community of musicians in town, held in-stores for visiting artists and released a few albums on the store’s own label, Slowtrain Records. We talk about how running an indie record store lead to what she does now, her love of supporting artists and building community in the arts and she shares marketing tips for artists looking to sell online. Anna was great to have on the show and I know you will love hearing from her and learning a few marketing tips!   Thank you to our sponsor https://olucompany.com/artists!   RESOURCES: I Like Your Work Podcast Studio Planner Instagram Submit Work Online Exhibition-Drowned Neon Rose Observations on Applying to Juried Shows   Instagram - @bigcartel Twitter - @bigcartel Facebook - @bigcartel  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnsw2meCtc5XGnJ5-bpgzTQ Pinterest - big_cartel LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anna-brozek-aa1711105/  Instagram: @annaiscanceled More about Anna: https://blog.bigcartel.com/introducing-our-new-ceo-anna-brozek    Sponsored by https://olucompany.com/artists

Field Projects is an artist-run project space in Chelsea NYC and online venue dedicated to emerging and mid-career artists. Centered on long-term curatorial projects, Field Projects presents monthly exhibitions at their Chelsea location in addition to participating in pop-up exhibitions in and around New York as well as art fairs around the world. The gallery invites artists to submit their work for consideration twice a year through an open call submission process. They discover about 80% of the artist they show through our open call submission process.   Field Projects was founded by artists Jacob Rhodes and Keri Oldham in 2011 and is currently run by Jacob Rhodes, Rachel Frank, and Kristen Racaniello. Interns are Isabella Cilia and Ellen Hersey and previous members are Jason Mones, Blair Murphy, Alissa D. Polan, Keri Oldham.   For this interview, I visited their space in Chelsea to talk to Jaco, Rachel and Kristen about their background in the arts, starting Field Projects, curatorial projects, applying to open calls and balancing their artistic practice with Field Projects. Field Projects has always been an inspirational space for me and after this interview, I was really blown away by their generosity and sincerity for curating shows and supporting artists. They are the real deal and share their experience as artists and curators in this episode.   Currently, they are curating a show in the Spring Break Art Show featuring Kate Klingbeil and they currently are exhibiting a show curated by Rachel. My guest on today’s episode of the Authentic Action Podcast is an exceptional visual artist, a successful dance instructor, and an inspiration to many. His passion for painting, and for artistry overall, is impressive and refreshing. He is well known, well respected, and well loved in his community. Currently residing and running a studio in Taos, NM, I am happy to introduce, the eloquent and ever-artistic, Korál Wynn. That wraps up my interview with the thoughtful and talented artist, Korál Wynn. I can honestly say I was so inspired by his story that I have started drawing again after years of putting it away and already I am pleasantly surprised by how it has improved my mindset. Even though I have decades or perhaps even liftetimes of improvement to grow into, before my skill level will be at the level of Korál’s, I am personally fascinated by that feeling of flow which happens when we feel like we are ‘creating art’, or ‘telling our own story through whatever medium we are working on, seemingly somewhat regardless of skill level or talent. That said, if you want to see a beautifully stirring example of what can come from the combination of exceptional skill and exceptional flow, or collaboration with the Universe, I encourage you to find him online and check out his paintings and prints. You will not be disappointed. In particular, he suggested the Facebook link to one of his oil paintings. You can find a link to “Luna Serena”, in the description, or find him via Facebook with a quick search for his name. I think he is the only Korál with a “K” on there, at least that I saw.I do hope I get to interview him again, as there were several topics that come up in this conversation that I would love to dive more deeply into.I appreciate your attention today, and I welcome your questions, comments, and suggestions. Today’s episode is a recording of a heartfelt conversation with another visionary and fellow artist, and her friendly neighbor and interesting artist who happened to be visiting. I have had the pleasure of working with Felicia Davis on a couple of short crafty projects, using small recycled and natural found items. She is well known in Albuquerque as an innovative designer, visionary artist, a stimulating entertainer, and action oriented multi-talented facilitator. This woman is admired by many and matched by none, when it comes to getting things done, connecting people with the right other people, and enjoying her life wholeheartedly with humor and full-on sense of playfulness all the while. In this interview, you will also hear from her friend and neighbor, transgender activist and sexual awareness teacher, multitalented performing artist and nonbinary model, Julian Wolf. She is proudly and keenly naughty and nice. I am happy to introduce you to the lovely and fierce, Felecia Davis. It was a real pleasure to have this conversation, and I am looking forward to several future conversations about the subject of a community artist center in Albuquerque, especially as it relates to my own vision of building giant Unity Play stations in the shapes of dragons.
