When Jackie Jones of Flourish Momentum shares her journey from an art educator to a therapist, we're reminded that sometimes the most profound changes in our lives come from unexpected transitions. This episode is a testament to how embracing the art of healing can illuminate a path toward reclaiming life after trauma, particularly for veterans and active-duty military personnel grappling with PTSD and its complex cousins. Together with Jackie, we uncover the layered realities of psychological conditions like moral injury and complicated grief, and the ways in which creative self-expression can be a powerful ally in the fight for mental well-being.The transformative power of art therapy takes center stage as we recount the evolution of its programs within the military healthcare system. By transcending skepticism and integrating into places like Fort Belvoir, art therapy has emerged as a critical tool for processing trauma and unearthing subconscious issues. Jackie's anecdotes bring to life the profound impact it has on individuals, from a man learning to accept his past to a veteran shouldering immense loss. These stories are a beacon of hope, illustrating that with the right support, the journey to self-acceptance and sharing one's pain is not only possible but life-changing.Our conversation wraps up, emphasizing the essential nature of personalized mental health treatment. We tackle the frustrations many encounter with overmedication and one-size-fits-all approaches, highlighting the promise of alternative therapies like sound bowl sessions and the importance of addressing the deep-rooted causes of emotional distress. As Jackie and I reflect on these themes, the episode becomes a call to action for anyone looking to understand their trauma and to find the courage to move forward in life. Why is it important that societies communicate their impact and value to their communities? And how can you approach this exercise effectively? To help overcome the challenges of declining membership, societies need to communicate their role and all the work they undertake to their communities effectively, to build transparency and understanding of who they are and what they do. Not only that, but reflection is an important aspect of successful strategizing, and exercises to articulate your impact helps you build accountability and ensure you're staying relevant. FENS is the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies. Such a large organization has its work cut out, to capture all the work they do and distill it in an engaging format for their communities. So how did they approach this exercise and what did they learn from the experience? Jackie Jones, Associate Editorial Director here at Wiley, had a conversation with them to find out more. Thank you FENS, for sharing your insights!

In the second of this two-part series, Lighthouse staffer Jackie Jones rejoins the podcast to talk about two of our newest Retreat Family experiences: the one-day and weekend retreats. Jackie shares about the difference in the one-day retreat compared to the weeklong seaside retreats when it comes to relationships—how families attend these events in their community, along with other families and volunteers who also live nearby, allowing for friendships to form that can be carried on past the day of the event. She goes on to explain what the one-day event typically looks like, including many similarities to a weeklong treat, such as Common Ground (small group time for the parents), and Family Partners (volunteers who partner with the Retreat Families and play with the kids while the parents are at Common Ground). They also discuss the weekend retreats, an experience Lighthouse piloted in Colorado in 2021. Lighthouse will offer one in Colorado and in North Carolina this year, and applications are open now! These retreats, like the weeklong ones, are provided for free for the Retreat Families and have many of the same activities as well. The weekend retreats are particularly good for families who are unable to attend a weeklong retreat, whether because of treatment or parents' work. Read more about these two experiences and register today at: https://www.lighthousefamilyretreat.org/regional-rf
In this week's episode, Chris and Christy sit down with Lighthouse staff member Jackie Jones, who is the Retreat Family Coordinator. In addition to talking about her obsession with Dolly Parton, the three talk in-depth about what it's like to attend a retreat as a Retreat Family—from how families learn about Lighthouse, through the application process, and then the retreat experience. Jackie shares what she loves about her role at Lighthouse, and Christy gives a behind-the-scenes look at what happens in the Common Ground room—the small group environment where Retreat Family parents gather each morning to share with each other. Jackie explains how a Lighthouse retreat is so much more than a vacation, and she shares what is required to apply to retreat, as well as the top three questions (and answers!) that she hears from families preparing to come on retreat.

This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Tyler Thompson of Dolt, Thompson, Shepherd & Conway, PSC (https://www.kytrial.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: Kentucky trial lawyer Tyler Thompson of Dolt, Thompson, Shepherd & Conway, PSC explains how he successfully represented a teenage girl who sustained a permanent brain injury after a crash involving a Monarch Environmental garbage truck parked on the wrong side of the road. On Thanksgiving Day in 2000, 17-year-old Shannon Houchin was driving to work when she crested the top of a hill and saw the headlights of a garbage truck in her lane. She quickly swerved to avoid the large Monarch Environmental truck and swerved again to avoid a pedestrian, which sent her car spinning and sliding sideways into the garbage truck. As a result of the crash, Shannon spent over 50 days in a coma and sustained brain and physical injuries that require round-the-clock care, including involuntary muscle contractions, bilateral third nerve palsy, dementia and hyperphagia -- a memory-related eating disorder. Trial lawyer Tyler Thompson shares how he utilized testimony from residents who had near collisions with Monarch Environmental garbage trucks and how the company ignored warnings about parking on the opposite side of the street for two years — some incidents being as recent as one week before Shannon's accident. In spite of the defense's arguments, a Warren County, Kentucky jury found that Shannon was not at fault and awarded her $27,335,667.87 in damages. “My mind is a dangerous neighbourhood” Johan and Roger have a conversation with Jackie Jones from Los Angeles, California. The first one in English in the history of Alkispodden. We talk about getting sober at 25 years old, about showing up late to the first 12 step meeting, about the importance of following rules in sobriety, about wanting 100% freedom, about the delusion of fear, about mathematically finding the perfect combination of drugs and alcohol to feel OK, about only having personal contact with the pizza delivery man, about being a tornado in the life of others, about getting into a relationship at 8 days sober, about the difference between shattering your ego and breaking your pride, about peaking at 19, about saying NO and not lying about why, about being a motivational thinker, about God being on his lunch break, about having a roast for yourself (a horrible idea!), about crying at a funeral to ”Dead and gone”, about wanting others to be ok, about performing comedy in sobriety, about success, about being of service, about the ”dis-ease”, and about caring about people. We wrap up by agreeing that the power of the twelve step fellowship is a wonderful thing, and that we should always remember Rule 62! Thanks Jackie for an amazing ”super connected” conversation! We loved it and we hope that our listeners do too.

Transcript“Loneliness is something we hear a lot from individuals in our community. It's a time of physical distancing. And at first, this was really articulated as social distancing. And I think that's a problem. Yes, we are physically disconnected, but that doesn't mean that we're socially disconnected.” — Lucy FlammSince COVID swept through the world, shelter in place and social distancing measures have kept us physically apart from our friends, families, and communities. Loneliness and isolation are pressing concerns as social distancing recommendations continue to be in place. But, being physically apart doesn’t mean that we can’t still come together. In a time of physical separation, mutual aid societies — local networks of neighbors helping out neighbors with anything from picking up groceries to pooling money for tires — are an example of community-building during COVID. In today’s episode, we hear from Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychologist at Brigham Young University that studies the health effects of loneliness. Then, we hear stories from members of the Cambridge Mutual Aid Society — organizing volunteer Lucy Flamm; Jeff Howe, a neighborhood pod leader; and Jackie Jones, a community advocate, and mutual aid recipient — about how COVID and mutual aid has changed their communities.Nominations for the 2020 People's Choice Podcast Awards opened on July 1st. You'd love for your teenager to listen to this show and learn some life advice by proxy instead of having to endure it in real time like you did, but it seems unlikely. Why are teenagers so stubbornly opposed to parental wisdom? We can't say for sure, but we do have some tricks for making them follow good advice against their own bratty proclivities. And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/209. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: When your main squeeze is giving you the turd degree for having one crappy day, perhaps something else stinks about your relationship. Should you dump them? Your professor drops your final grade if you don't bring a doctor's note for absences, but doesn't suffer consequences when they miss a class. Should you bring up this double standard? Your significant other failed classes early in school thanks to social anxiety, but has since improved. Is it dishonest to prop up a low GPA on a resume by specifying the higher GPA of their major? How do you impart what you've learned from this show to your teenager, who is unlikely to listen to the show directly? Is it worth cultivating one-sided friendship with people who seem only interested in talking about themselves and their problems? Life Pro Tip: It might seem common knowledge, but make proper backups of all your data — not once a year but at least once a month.
