Medvirkende: Caspar Stefani, officer i Hæren. Jacob Kaarsbo, senioranalytiker i Tænketanken Europa. Jesper Korsgaard Hansen, formand for Forsvarets største fagforening, Centralforeningen for Stampersonel. Torsten Schack Pedersen, politisk Ordfører for Venstre. Anne Vang Rasmussen, rektor på Københavns Professionshøjskole. Jens Boe Nielsen, tidligere rektor på Nørre Gymnasium. Scenic Designer and Visual Artist Julie K. Ross appeared on the podcast as part of our educational shows about the professionals not on stage that are critical to bringing a show to the stage. Hear what a Scenic Designer does, how she ended up in this career, how the profession has changed (and where projections fit in), and a prop that many times ends up on her sets as an inside joke. Also hear about her work as a visual artist and where in Dollywood one can see her very large and unique murals. Finally get the scoop on "Thurgood" opening soon at NC Stage Company and some teasers about that set.
Julie K. Rhodes is an actor and author. In March of 2020, Julie was a healthy 30- something with a husband, two kids, a pug, and a professional acting career. She is the author of Chronic Grace: Prayers, Saints, and Thorns That Stay published in 2023.Julie narrates her health journey through long Covid, where she experienced debilitating chronic illness for 18 months. As a mother of 2 young children, this was a life-altering experience. Regeringen vil have flere til at vælge en erhvervsuddannelse, men skal der tvungen brobygning eller store annoncekampagner til, for at få flere studerende på de erhvervsfaglige uddannelser? https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/lewis-carroll-invented-retroactive Retroactive public goods funding is one of those ideas that's so great people can't stop reinventing it. I know of at least five independent inventions under five different names: “social impact bonds” by a New Zealand economist in 1988, “certificates of impact” by Paul Christiano in 2014, “retroactive public goods funding” by Vitalik Buterin a few years ago, “EA loans” by a blogger who prefers to remain anonymous, and “venture grants” by Mako Yass. These aren't all exactly the same idea. Some are slightly better framed than others and probably I'm being terribly disrespectful to the better ones by saying they're the same as the worse ones. But I think they all share a basic core: some structure that lets profit-seeking venture capitalist types invest in altruistic causes, in the hopes that altruists will pay them back later once they've been shown to work. Upon re-reading some old SSC comments, I found a gem I'd missed the first time around: Julie K says that the actual first person to invent this idea was Lewis Carroll (aka author of Alice in Wonderland) back in 1894. She quotes from his book Sylvie and Bruno:

A történetről, a regény központi kérdéseiről, különleges figuráiról beszélgetünk Fábián Jankával.

The religious marketplace in Denmark was thrown wide open in 1849 when the country ratified its first democratic constitution. After nearly a thousand years of state control, the people were guaranteed religious freedom. No more would Danes automatically be Lutheran. Missionary-minded Christians from around the world flocked to Denmark. Thousands upon thousands of Danes joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this episode, Dr. Julie K. Allen joins us to talk about these converts as described in her new book Danish But Not Lutheran: The Impact of Mormonism on Danish Cultural Identity 1850-1920. About the Guest Julie K. Allen is a professor of comparative literature at Brigham Young University and author of Danish, But Not Lutheran: The Impact of Mormonism on Danish Cultural Identity, 1850-1920. Before coming to BYU she held the position of Paul and Renate Madsen Professor of Danish in the Scandinavian Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. October is breast cancer awareness month, so we're shining the spotlight on breast cancer survivors as well as women who are on the forefront of providing medical care to women fighting the disease. There was a time when Dr. Julie Silver faced a health crisis of her own. Diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30's with 3 small children at home, she found herself on the other side of medicine, as patient, not physician. Her story from surgery through radiation, chemo, and recovery is not unlike any other woman's brave battle with the disease, except for one thing: this woman specializes in rehabilitation and when she heard the words: "you're okay now, go ahead and live your life" she was overwhelmed. Exhausted and depleted from fighting breast cancer, this exceptional woman recognized that she needed to use her knowledge as a respected authority in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to blaze a trail that would improve care and outcomes not just for breast cancer survivors, but for people recovering from all kinds of cancers. Now the Associate Professor & Associate Chair in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Julie Silver is the author of multiple books, including Before & After Cancer Treatment. #storybehindhersuccess #16LifeLessons #mydoveproductions @MAHealthHosp #ThinkPink #WallsDoTalk #QuoteHer

DKA: It’s Not About the Fluids! - Episode 7 Hot of the presses! We are thrilled to speak with the amazing husband and wife research team of Dr. Nate Kuppermann and Dr. Nicole Glaser, on their practice changing paper that was just, and we mean JUST, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) is a potentially life threatening condition that can be complicated to treat, especially in children.
