In this episode of Style DNA I go on a stylistic journey with the Author, Broadcaster, Editor and Coach Rosie Nixon. Rosie is the author of three novels, The Stylist, Amber Green Takes Manhattan and Just Between Friends, plus the Be Kind book. Her new novel called Bad Influence is out this August. After a long career in women's magazines, including Grazia, Glamour and Red she became the award-winning Editor and Editor in Chief of HELLO! Magazine for an incredible 16 years. The 24/7 pressure of being at the helm ultimately led to her near burnout (which she is very open about) and like many of life's challenges, there is often a silver lining. She says that she didn't think she was serving herself as a woman saying it was all going well, so being honest about her own struggles really helped her and inspired her into the next chapter. She became a qualified life coach and in 2024 she launched Rosie's Reinvention Retreats - a series of day retreats for midlife women, to support navigating changes in career, business and wellbeing. A complete career change, starting from scratch in a way, albeit with all the knowledge built up over the years ...and I know well what guts that takes. We discuss how the magazine world has changed over the last couple of decades and the 24/7 pressure that goes with being the editor or a magazine that in its heyday sold 1 million copies a week.  We talk about Kindness and she says that she started thinking about kindness when she first started at Hello! which was slightly vilified about always being nice about people.  Rosie believes that Kindness is a super power and should be worn as a badge of honour... yes to that!  She feels that kindness is probably responsible for the longevity of the magazine and is one of it's strengths because everyone is treated with respect.  She felt proud and protective of this stance and was passionate that it should be the thread that was woven through the magazine. Of course we discuss Rosie's personal style journey, her haircuts and fashion phases...her borrowed Alberta Ferretti wedding dress (way ahead of her time back then) and the all-important discussion of dressing our age ...she admits to dressing older than herself earlier in her career to be taken more seriously ...I hope you enjoy this episode ...thank you Rosie for being such a warm, open and inspiring guest x Learn more about your ad choices. House work is happening at Lizz's house today on the podcast, and that's one of the drawbacks of living in an older neighborhood. But what do you get in a new development? Neighbor drama! Ever since Lizz moved her neighborhood has been drama free and she's kind of craving it. Can you help her out?  It's been a slammed week for the ladies of the Carpool Podcast! Not only are there new roughs being put in, but they are making tons of content in the new Suburban and the Just Between Friends sale is BACK! But the biggest event is Lizz getting her CPST certification!  It's also time to talk about what we're viewing. Lizz NEEDS to talk about the Drake and Josh reunion podcast and all the drama surrounding it. Kelly, on the other hand, is enjoying time with her own thoughts. But they both have plenty of suggestions for a listener who wrote in asking what girly shows to watch while her husband is on deployment.  Kelly had a post go viral this week asking what car features are not worth the hype. There are going to be some hot takes here. The first one? Wireless Apple CarPlay is SO not worth it! Neither are wireless chargers!  Finally, Kelly ended up in a video with Naptime Kitchen that turned into a "one of these things is not like the others" situation. BUT it did provide some amazing Ditch the Drive-Thru options!  Rula patients typically pay $15 per session when using insurance. Did you raise your hand? Tracy Panase held the distinction of being the top performing franchisee within the Just Between Friends (JBF) system successfully owning and operating four territories in southeastern Pennsylvania. One day while on vacation a system-wide meeting was called to discuss some major changes at JBF corporate. She joined the call. In the meeting, new roles and new leaders were assigned by JBF founder Shannon Wilburn. Tracy's name was not announced. She was stumped. How was that possible? Had she not been considered? When Tracy discussed it with her husband John, he asked: Did you raise your hand? That was the turning point that led Tracy to reach out to Shannon to discuss the possible acquisition of Just Between Friends. Today Tracy is CEO and owner of Just Between Friends. She is dedicated to taking the JBF legacy and making Just Between Friends a household name. Listen to the full story on this episode of The Franchise Woman podcast.

Can you believe it's time to start thinking about sending the kids Back-to-School! We've all had our summer fun in this crazy summer heat, but now it's back to business! Back to School Tips: -Check with your school's PTA/ PTO to see if you can order school supplies directly from your school instead of doing all the shopping yourself. -Get a quick haircut the week before, make a special breakfast on the 1st day and a fun afterschool snack to make the new school year extra special! -School can be tough and wearing on a kiddo, so daily affirmations, ESPECIALLY on the 1st day can help. -A quick chat about cell phones at school has been important to Ashley. Times are different than when we went to school, and some kids like making TikTok videos at school, so chatting about phones, safety, etc may be necessary. -Don't miss the Just Between Friends consignment sales all over Houston this fall to grab great deals on clothes for the kids! -The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn, We Don't Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins, Strictly No Elephants by Lisa Mantchev, The Day you Begin by Jacqueline Woodson, and Llama Llama Misses Mama are great books to read before the 1st day of school and ease anxieties. -The Busy Toddler is an awesome Instagram resource for preparing your young kids for Kindergarten and what they REALLY need to know before the 1st day. Cream & Sugar Recommendations: Treats of Mexico... go! NOW! It's in Eado off of Telephone Rd. Try all kinds of Mexican treats, snacks and desserts. It's super popular and is always busy, so it MUST be good. Check out the show, Loot, on Apple TV. It's loosely based on the wife of Jeff Bezos. It's funny and quirky as it explores thew life of a woman who has incredible wealth while she works with those who have significantly less. Houston Moms House Blend Posts: Indoor Play Spots for Houston Kids by Shrav C. has been a great resource for play areas to visit while the outside temperatures continue to be insanely offensive! Letting Go: Sending a Child to Summer Camp for the First Time by Emily Feinstein is a great read to help you mentally prepare for sending your kids to camp, daycare, school, wherever.

Whoa!    Today, Shannon talks about who are the RIGHT people to go to for business advice and HOW she was able to create a panel of experts in her own company who are available whenever she needs them without having to spend a fortune!   She decided to start an advisory board, which consists of four members with different levels of expertise who meet quarterly for a couple of hours to discuss the business. They have standing agenda items which they tend to each meeting, and then go into discussing new business.   For Shannon, her advisory board was about finding the right people to help guide and grow her business. It’s like coming into a family who already has the rules set. If you make the decision to join the family, you have to look at the rules and see if they’re something you feel like you can do, and if it’s something you feel like you want to be a part of.”  * “I'm always giving the advice that you need to look at the franchise satisfaction because of the franchisees aren't satisfied in the brand, there's a reason they're not satisfied and you need to figure out why that is.”  * “When you choose a brand to purchase, you are partnering with that brand and you're partnering with every other franchisee that's a part of that system, whether good or bad.”  * “We're looking for someone who can operate an event and market the heck out of it because that's what it's going to take in our brand. Now, if you're looking at a different brand, maybe they need you to be great at finance and great at administration. So you need to look at that and think, okay, is this the right fit for my personality and my skillset?”  * “I really encourage couples, especially married couples, to talk about their expectations when it comes to business ownership and see if the hours that are going to be needed and the brand are something that they really think that they could put into it.”  * “You don't have to be good at everything because everyone is not good at everything. You have weaknesses and it's okay to have weaknesses, but you need to play to your strengths and work and your strengths and pay someone else to work in your weaknesses.”  * “Look at your goals, like what do you want to achieve by purchasing the franchise and what do you want your life to look like?” What Do You Think? Kids grow fast, which means a whole new set of clothes every few months, which means constantly having to spend money on items your kids will use and then outgrow before you can blink an eye. So how can you keep your kids clothed without throwing money out the window? Thankfully, my guest today, Shannon Wilburn, has an answer: consignment sales. It started in 1997, when Shannon and her friend, both young moms in Tulsa, OK, had the idea to hold a small kids clothes sale in Shannon’s living room with 17 consigners. They sold $2000 in merchandise and each walked away with $150. From there the business, which they named Just Between Friends, grew, and within a few years they were holding multiple day sales in an expo-center in Tulsa and helping other moms start their own sales. In 2004, Shannon franchised the company and now Just Between Friends sales are held all over the country. Some of them even gross over a million dollars each!
