You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Clement Labine was an American right-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball best known for his years with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1950 to 1960. As a key member of the Dodgers in the early 1950s, he helped the team to its first World Series title in 1955 with a win and a save in four games. He is one of eight players in MLB history to have won back-to-back World Series championships on different teams. He held the National League record for career saves from 1958 until 1962; his 96 career saves ranked fourth in MLB history when he retired. He also set a Dodgers franchise record of 425 career games pitched. Now for our feature story: By serving as vice president of the National Conference of State Legislatures, veteran lawmaker Brian Patrick Kennedy says he will have an opportunity to help ensure Rhode Island has an opportunity to influence the organization's legislative and policy agenda. Kennedy, a state representative who represents Hopkinton and a portion of Westerly, was elected to serve as vice president of the conference during the organization's legislative summit in Tampa, Florida. The bipartisan organization serves each state and U.S. territory and the nation's 7,383 state lawmakers and legislative staff. Founded in 1975, the conference works to advance the effectiveness, independence and integrity of legislatures and to foster interstate cooperation and facilitate the exchange of information among legislatures. Kennedy said: "I appreciate the opportunity to serve as vice president and look forward to working with my colleagues from around the country. NCSL has afforded legislators and staff an unrivaled opportunity to learn from the experiences of other states, exchange ideas and come up with policy solutions that can help propel our respective states and, ultimately, our entire nation forward. I also look forward to working with our Washington office to ensure federal policies are in line with state priorities." Kennedy's election marks the first time a legislator from a New England state has served in one of the conference's four leadership positions in nine years and the first time a Rhode Island lawmaker was ever selected. Kennedy remarked: "I think this is big for Rhode Island. Not only do we get to be involved with helping to set the agenda and figuring out legislative priorities on a national level, but we're going to help coordinate these central policies and how they impact state priorities moving forward."  Kennedy, who is in his 33rd year in the Rhode Island statehouse, has been involved with the conference for more than 20 years. For the past five years, Kennedy has served as speaker pro tempore in the Rhode Island House of Representatives.  Kennedy will serve one year as vice president, ascend to president-elect the following year and then become president at the legislative summit in 2024. NCSL leadership alternates between political parties every year. Idaho Speaker Scott Bedke, a Republican, will serve as president-elect of NCSL, and Speaker Scott Saiki of Hawaii, a Democrat, became the 48th president of the NCSL. For more about the coronavirus pandemic, the recovery, and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Crimmins Residential Staffing in Westerly. A couple in Watch Hill is looking for a part-time housekeeper. Pay is $35 per hour and you'll work there 3 days per week in season and one day per week during the off-season. For more job requirements, check out the link in the description: https://www.indeed.com/jobs?l=Westerly%2C%20RI&mna=5&aceid&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpf2IBhDkARIsAGVo0D2S3gEb-328GyRpBuTTeeKPdn3-klOh0KYAsfete6MEZmI5S4qTg-4aAnQkEALw_wcB&vjk=028da372fc87d663 Today we're remembering the life of John Henry Barrett, Jr., 84, of Hudson, New Hampshire and formerly of Westerly. A retired Episcopal Priest, John celebrated the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination in 2014, and over his ministry served parishes in Westport, CT; Concord, MA; Swampscott, MA; Johnson City, NY; and in retirement as Priest Associate at Christ Church in Westerly. He is the son of the late Dr. John and Mildred Barrett of Westerly and is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Carol. He is survived by his 3 sons, 5 grandchildren, his sister, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was known to many as "Jack" and was active throughout his priesthood and his life, having served on many local and diocesan groups and committees and enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Holy Land on two occasions. He was a volunteer firefighter in Westport and served for many years as a Chaplain for the Swampscott Fire Department. Jack and his family enjoyed the outdoors and traveled every summer visiting National Parks and historic landmarks throughout the country. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate John's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! This cult classic, written and directed by Eli Craig, took me by surprise. I remember seeing the trailer and thinking, "okay, all of the best parts surely had to be in the trailer." Then I saw the film and saw that it was more than a simple spoof, offering some legitimate laughs and a solid understanding of horror tropes. The film stars both Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine as the titular Tucker and Dale. You might remember Tudyk from his work as Wash in Firefly or the plethora of characters he has voiced for DC Comics including: Green Arrow, Superman, Clayface, and The Flash. He was also the only redeeming part of Rogue One, according to Jake, in his portrayal of sassy robot: K-2SO. Labine is no stranger to horror comedies, given that he has starred in Reaper, Deadbeat, and Dead Last. Both men went on to appear in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. The "College Kids" that litter the film are played by various actors I am too lazy to look up, even to add metadata to this stupid description for the sake of SEO content. They encapsulate all of the awful tropes about coeds that make you root for slashers to slay them indiscriminately. Through a series of misunderstandings, that are directly addressed within the film, the kids mistake the good-natured rednecks for mutant inbred deviant murderers. There is even a twist! Oh-- BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY THERE IS A CUTE DOG! The "Hidden Track" this week is Gyrojets with their song "Pieces. https://gyrojets.bandcamp.com/ If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Sam Cooper is continuing his investigative series today on Global News, looking into new data and notes from an employee of Great Canadian Gaming and what she observed at the company's Richmond Casino. Yesterday, we told you that dealer supervisor, Muriel Labine documented cash transactions which clearly appeared to be drug money laundering by gangsters including the Big Circle Boys. But according to the records, complaints to management were essentially ignored. The casino was making big profits from these cash transactions, and no one wanted to turn off the flood of dirty money, Labine says. Premier John Horgan, who says he hadn't seen Sam's reporting -  was asked about this file yesterday. Today, we're learning from Sam Cooper that the founder of Great Canadian Gaming, Ross McLeod, corresponded with Labine on her complaints. Documents show as well McLeod and Great Canadian Gaming making a shocking counter allegation: suggesting a BC Union wanted to work with Labine to organize the Richmond casino, and threatened the company to reveal Labine's allegations through the press … but would not go to the press with allegations of loan sharking and money laundering, if Great Canadian recognized the union. Sam Cooper told the “Jon Mccomb Show” this morning, about the meeting between the whistleblower, Muriel Labine, and the founder of Great Canadian Gaming, Ross McLeod, where she says she expressed her concerns with what she had been seeing at the casino. Cooper goes on to say that his informant, former dealer supervisor Muriel Labine, kept track of the excuses that management had for the suspected gang members being in the casinos… and dismissed the gamblers and loan sharks  as “just friends lending money to friends”.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 453 (For our Patreon supporters.) This week we hang out and watch the Netflix original feature Little Evil. And while we pin down just which one of the cast is usually I’m jacked up on Robitussin, we also discuss… Truth or Dare, Clueless, a coked-up unicorn, Party Down, Sally Field, she’s just oddly likable, Ray Wise’s birthday party, Space Truckers, iZombie, stunt programming, Meredith Salenger, Sock and Sam, a bus-load of dead kids… I’m sticking with it, every movie needs more Clancy Brown, being a happy horse, somebody’s got to conduct that Derby, Patton Oswalt, edited Showgirls, Debi Mazar, Parks and Rec, that was before he hit her with the 2x4, Conan the Barbarian, Tyler Labine, Lucy Hale and he’s a bad cop… so he’s a good hit man. Spoiler Alert: General spoilers for “Little Evil”... so go watch it before listening. “Who doesn’t enjoy a movie where they talk about killing a kid?! I mean… it’s good fun for the whole family!”

You are, once again – unless this is your first time – listening to Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. (Or the Comedy Earfruit Earfruit. Ever since my chat with Superego's Matt Gourley, I’ve become obsessed with renaming the generic podcast with something. What do you think of earfruit?) This is Succotash Epi99! The penultimate episode of Season One. That’s right. Episode 100 will be the final show for our first season. But that’s next time. THIS time we have a helluva show for you with not one but TWO interviews that I did when I was at the 3rd Annual LA Podcast Festival at the end of September. You’ll hear my chat with Todd Glass of the Todd Glass Show and with Matt Knudsen from the Grabbing Lunch podcast. (Or earfruit.) I’ll also be playing clips from both of their podcasts PLUS clips from Picking Favorites, a new podcast on the new Wolfpop Network, the Angry Old Man podcast, Denzel Washington is The Greatest Actor of All Time PERIOD, and Today We Learned teaches us all a little something about the dumbest laws in the United States. We also have a DOUBLE dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with comedian Will Durst, a classic Henderson’s Pants commercial, and a musical track from our Associate Producer Tyson Saner that is featured on Combat Radio’s First Christmas Album, which is a great way to help out friend-of-Succotash Ethan Dettenmeier’s Christmas Event for Homeless Children Benefit. You can find out order the album and find out more about the benefit by visiting OUR homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com, and click on the album cover on the right hand side. Wish Us A Happy 100TH Episode! If you’re a comedy podcaster or just a regular old listener, there’s still time to get us your “Happy 100th Episode Anniversary!” message for us to play on our one hundredth show. You can call one into the Succotash Hotline, at (818) 921-7212, or email us an MP3 or WAV file to marc@SuccotashShow.com. (Not to throw a challenge out there, but in this episode I'm playing a great 100th episode message in from the guys over at Illusionoid and I’ve got to say that I really appreciate the extra effort that went into it. Tyson’s cut is entitled For Christmas and feature in during this episode both under our Tweetsack mentions and then in its entirety at the end of the show.  The Clips Denzel Washington is the Greatest Actor of All Time PERIODLast week on Splitsider.com and HuffPost Comedy I reviewed this new podcast, one of Wolfpop’s new shows, hosted by recent Succotash special guest W. Kamau Bell and Kevin Avery, a soon-to-be guest on this show. Both of these guys spent a lot of their formative funny years as San Francisco comedians, then Kamau got his own show, Totally Biased, for a while on FX and FXX. Kevin was head writer on that show and, when it got cancelled, he found a place on the writing staff on John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight on HBO. The two of them decided to put together a podcast about one of their favorite people, Denzel Washington, to let everyone know what a terrific actor they think he is. The Todd Glass ShowI was glad I got a chance to sit with Todd Glass at this year’s LA Podcast Festival. I know him a little bit from the LA comedy scene and he’s played in Northern California during the past couple of years and we got to hangout just before he started HIS podcast, the Todd Glass Show. Before I get to our chat, I wanted to play a little piece of a recent epi of his show, one featuring guest Patton Oswalt. Picking FavoritesIf you were a fan of NBC’s series Chuck, about a nerdy big box store employee who get a computer stuffed into his noggin, you know Zachary Levi, the star of the show. David Coleman was the propmaster on that show, kind of the Q of TV comedy spy show, if you will. Together, they started a business called The Nerd Machine and now they have this Wolfpop podcast, Picking Favorites, started with the help of a comedian who goes by the name Razzle Dangerously, who also host a show on the Nerdist network called Today We Learned, which we’ll be playing a clip from momentarily. Then they drafted Tyler Labine, a hilarious actor from shows like Reaper, The Sons of Tucson, and the movie Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Picking Favorites starts with three topics each episode and the hosts and guests go round-robin style, naming off their favorites of whatever the topic happens to be. In the second show, their guest was Adam Baldwin, another Chuck alumnus (and also one of the stars of Monster Makers, a movie I wrote for the Hallmark Channel.) Today We LearnedAssociate Producer Tyson Saner grabbed the previous clip and this next clip, which comes from the Today We Learned podcast, featuring Razzle Dangerously (as heard in the Picking Favorites clip), and Dan Casey. This Nerdist show says that the hosts bring you “the latest and greatest and sometimes weirdest facts and trivia the world has to offer.” In this clip, from their Epi62, the hosts and their guest Jacob Soboroff talk about dumb laws in the United States. Angry Old ManWe clipped The Angry Old Man podcast quite a while ago – Episode 53, I think – so it’s high time we hit him again. All I know about the ringmaster for this podcast is that he goes by the name Robert Q, and that he does all the voices on this thing. Tyson grabbed the cold opening from Angry Old Man Epi 90 so have a listen… Grabbing LunchI was first introduced to Matt Knudsen, host of the Grabbing Lunch podcast, at the most recent LA Podcast Festival when Christine Blackburn (of the Story Worthy podcast) dragged him into the Podcast Lab and told me, “You have GOT to interview Matt!” I really enjoyed our chat and I love the premise for his podcast. Simple. Filling. Grab two people who listeners may or may not have heard of before, sit ‘em down to lunch and turn the mics on. This clip is from his Epi52 – at one episode a week, that’s his one year anniversary. And his guests were actress Helen Slater from things like Supergirl and City Slickers, and her husband Rob Watzke, a Hollywood editor and improviser. Join us next time for Epi100, the last show of Season 1! Until next time, thanks for passing the Succotash! – Marc Hershon

The stories pouring into the Bedford & Sullivan podcast have been fantastic, and today will be no exception. The late great Clem Labine, a pitcher on those Boys of Summer teams, was a Woonsocket, RI, native. At the age of 16 he went to work at Jacob Finklestein & Sons, a garment company owned by Rick Elliott's father, Elliott Finklestein, that eventually became the 7th largest outwear manufacturer in America. Clem and Rick's father became the best of friends, and Rick has numerous stories to tell about his childhood as, and I quote, "the most blessed child in U.S. history...not just because of Clem, but also because of an amazing dad, and all the opportunities the two dear friends saw as priceless gifts to their boys' lives." So, join us at 12PM ET for the latest edition of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast!
