Guest: Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, and Mamoon Hamid, partner at Kleiner PerkinsWhen he was a newly minted venture capitalist at USVP, Mamoon Hamid got a tip that he should meet a young entrepreneur named Aaron Levie, and fought for the right to invest in his cloud storage startup, Box. For years after that initial investment, the two men say, Box's fate was precarious: “We could have died any day,” Mamoon says, and Aaron recalled several times he had to be talked “down from a ledge.” Today, they tell us how Box established itself as “open for business” — a concept Mamoon hounded Aaron with in the early years — and grew into success. In this episode, Aaron, Mamoon, and Joubin discuss Box socks, authenticity at work, Josh Stein, living in the office, over-diligence, Google Platypus, the 2008 crash, nostalgia, everything is personal, the ten-person test, burnout, Dan Levin, ChatGPT, Parker Conrad, and Silicon Valley as “technology town.” In this episode, we cover: “Make mom proud, unless she's evil” (01:59) How Mamoon and Aaron met (04:38) Mamoon's first investment in Box (11:15) Pausing the term sheet (16:08) “We could have died any day” (19:01) What is company-building? Understanding Spirituality with Mamoon Yusaf How many times have you heard people tagging themselves as spiritual and not religious? Not once, right? People tend to think they are spiritual, but the truth is, they are yet to get to that level. Some practice traditions of different religions. In this episode, Mamoon Yusaf will teach us how we can take our spirituality a notch higher and start enjoying the ease that comes with it. Mamoon and I will have in-depth conversations on the differences between ego-based entrepreneurship and spiritual-based entrepreneurship. We will also dig into other amazing topics that pertain to spirituality. Listen in to learn more. Who is Mamoon Yusaf Mamoon is a spiritual coach. He is best-selling author of Inside the Soul of Islam. He focuses on the Muslim or Sufi spiritual path as a spiritual coach. He also does spiritual teachings that are universal and open to everyone. Is there spirituality in religion? Spirituality has no labels, yet nowadays, different religions have different labels. Most religions fail to focus on the present moment and forget that God is ever-present. Why doesn't Mamoon use the term universe? Mamoon believes that everything that exists within time has a beginning. The universe exists within time. It, therefore, has a beginning. Everything that has a beginning has a cause outside of itself, and since the universe exists within time. The universe has a beginning. The universe, we can therefore conclude, has a cause outside of itself. Mamoon also believes God is the supreme Being. It also comes at the speed of thought.” “Like mosquito repellent spray, there is a client repellent spray and it's called neediness and insecurity.” “Spiritual reality doesn't have any labels.” “Whatever you think, that's what your reality is going to look like.” “Every world, religion, and the spiritual tradition in the world brings something powerful.” “Everything that exists within time has a beginning.” “Anytime we believe something has the power to cause our feelings, we do get nervous. We start imagining and overthinking about that thing.” Connect with Mamoon Yusaf: Website: https://mamoonyusaf.com/ Podcast: https://mamoonyusaf.com/podcasts/ If you enjoy the content that we're bringing to you, then please feel free to drop us a review on the platform you're listening to us through. :)
