Tonight, we'll be talking a set of films that almost form a genre of their own. These films were often, though not always, “respected” by critics and the general public at large, but all bore that dark, almost despairing claustrophobia and realistic feel of what I and others were living every day out on the streets locally, far from the dayglo nonsense of the 60's reruns or the sunnier Hollywood based fare of the day. The streets were crowded, filthy, filled with the detritus of the post-hippie era – the junkies, the odd artsy types, the gangs, the whores. The days where you were damn glad to see Curtis Sliwa's Guardian Angels on a subway…if you were crazy enough to use them at all. Everything covered in graffiti, buildings collapsing into tenements, crack houses, illicit hookup spots for rough trade cruising types. Garbage in the streets, and decay in every sense of the word. These are films that wallow in what in later years would be referred to as urban blight, but not so much “celebrating” as providing a window into all the palpable danger and decline of an impoverished post-blackout Manhattan in the days after the Watts and Newark riots, not long past Ford telling the mayor and city to go screw ourselves when asking for Federal relief. These were the days of Studio 54, CBGBs and the original Saturday Night Live – but filled with menace. Hard drug use was rampant. Muggings were so commonplace as to be a shrug of the shoulders. Nobody in their right mind stepped into Central Park after sunset. Washington Square was known for decades as Needle Park. And the East Village? Forget about Alphabet City, the Bronx or Brooklyn. This was a special breed of film, that focused on crooked, flawed cops working outside a busted system…but not with the heroic vibe of Reaganite action heroes. These guys paid for painting outside the lines. The denouments were never triumphant, all victories were pyrrhic. Vigilante justice and community action were about as fantastic as these films got, and as close to actual comeuppance as anyone got. This is the story, in a way, of our childhood and early youth to young adulthood, as told in some very memorable films. So join us as we go dumpster diving in the back alleys of most dangerous of neighborhoods, only here on Weird Scenes! Tamika is back with Brantley in tow and trying to keep her rails. We even have multiple dog guests on the show for what might be the first time, but they don't actually talk so I guess that was a pointless declaration. This episode is just one giant outtake, so this nonsense description is going to be as good as it gets. Fair listeners, beware of gazing into the abyss that is this episode, because it will be sure to gaze right back into your eyeholes or as the case may be, ear holes. We even have a surprise guest that shows up an episode late.Available on Amazon Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Castbox, Deezer, Podcast Addict, and Podchaser.Spicy Beets: https://soundcloud.com/jesse-senpaiPaper Lab Studios: Paperlabstudios.comFollow us on Instagram: @zippertan @paperlabstudiosFollow us on Twitter: @zippertan @paperlabSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/paperlabstudios

Chana Studley has a remarkable story to share. She has had an amazingly interesting and successful career in Hollywood working on the sets of many notable films including The Flintstones movie and Babe In The City to name a few. Before she started her career during college and a few years after she was hit with three large bricks she was the victim of three muggings. She not only overcame those traumas but has listened to the whispers and used her experience to help others suffering from trauma and chronic pain. This is definitely a story you don't want to miss!
We often hear people say, ‘violence is never the answer’. Outside of defending yourself few people have any problem with that cliché. This is true on the scale of someone getting mugged to warring nations. However, the truth is that it’s much more significant that violence also has a high cost in resources, enough resources that it could have a massively negative effect on that nation’s economy. What kind of resources are we talking about here? Up to 34% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in some countries and globally up to 10.5%. Especially considering that those are figures for western, industrialized nations with fully developed economies, that is a lot of money. Money that could be used for a ton of other, better things. Before we get into that though, let’s look at some of the ways that violence winds up costing everyone. First, think of war. Everyone knows that wars aren’t cheap and while we often think about how much war costs the loser, it isn’t exactly cheap for the winner either. Tanks, missiles, and training all cost money, sometimes millions of dollars each. Then there is the cost associated with assimilating new territory, taking down street signs, removing statues, and the extended military presence it takes to prevent resistance. Don’t worry, this is in no way meant as a sympathy piece for aggressors. The point is that even the winner loses. Beyond all of that, imagine a war that ends with no one getting occupied, borders return to what they were before hostilities began. There are still costs. When the soldiers come home, they are often physically injured, hampering their ability to make a living, at least without expensive medical care like prosthetics. Mentally, the issues are often even greater. Just the culture shock of going from civilian life to the rigid structure of the military and back can be significant. Having gone through combat, especially the violent house-to-house combat that many have seen since the invasion of Iraq in 2002, takes that culture shock and dials it up to 111. That can also result in a reduced ability to contribute and lots of money spent on therapy. Obviously, this hurts the individual’s ability to earn for himself but the ripple effects go far beyond that. His immediate family will suffer as will the local community and it also affects the nation’s productivity. That’s a quick overview of the many costs of war. But that’s just one kind of violence. There are many, many more. Muggings, riots, gang wars, domestic violence, child abuse, police brutality all feed into this. Every death, every injury in some way hurts everyone else through the effects that go through our communities. In the face of gang wars or riots, people will spend their money on defending themselves, not on donating to charities and research groups. And no one can blame them. Again, the point is that violence forces people to redirect their own resources to things that may be less productive but are more urgent in the here and now. Just think of all the great things we could be doing with all that money if it wasn’t getting spent dealing with the horrible aftereffects of violence. How many scholarships could we give? How much medical research could get done? How many addicts could get treated and kept off the streets? How to get there? One thing that would help is to use something like TARTLE to get in touch with the people affected by violence to learn exactly how they are affected. What are the problems that they experience in their daily lives? What policies have they seen make a difference? With our global reach, TARTLE’s members could provide an extensive cross-section of all the various kinds of violence in a number of different contexts. That can help people learn how to make a real difference and get some of that money put towards things a little more productive than more tank shells. What’s your data worth? www.tartle.co

Close friend and fellow Squad member "DoDo" (don't ask) comes on to discuss the police shootout / wrongful persecution against her ex bf; who will remain completely anonymous and hidden within the fogs of secrecy. DoDo (no not Dido, possibly grammy award winning musician. DoDo as in the bird I suppose) details the current situation regarding a courtroom "he said she said" vs corrupt police who refuse to take responsibility for the itchiness confined within their trigger fingers of their firearm wielding hands; no but rather they prefer to pin a wonky, full of holes, fairy tale of a story upon any & every junkie or tweaker within range of what their badge & utility belts can round together w/ the greatest of ease. We also have a handful of lovely compositions, remixes & VIPS from the very talented H8R Dubs ( SC link can be found here: H8R Dubs https://soundcloud.com/h8rdubs ). Unc reads a fan post and clickbaits his brethren in the Squad to some special surprises in the works coming next episode all in a very "run from the police" edition of Nod Squad.

Domestic violence is a serious problem that needs to be stopped sooner than later. According DomesticViolenceStatistics.org, the statistics are: * Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten. * Around the world, at least 1 in every 3 women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused during her lifetime. Most often, the abuser is a member of her own family. * Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women, more than car accidents, muggings, & rapes combined. * Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually. * Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup. * Everyday in the US, more than 3 women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends. * 92% of women surveyed listed reducing domestic violence & sexual assault as their top concern. * Domestic violence victims lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year in the US alone, equivalent of 32,000 full-time jobs. * Based on reports from 10 countries, between 55% & 95% of women who had been physically abused by their partners had never contacted non-governmental organizations, shelters, or the police for help. * The costs of intimate partner violence in the US alone exceed $5.8 billion per year: $4.1 billion are for direct medical & health care services, while productivity losses account for nearly $1.8 billion. * Men who as children witnessed their parents’ domestic violence were twice as likely to abuse their own wives. Our guests, Helen Tang Hooper and Marilyn Greaux, in support of Domestic Violence Education Month, have first-hand experience with the subject and have volunteered to speak about what a female can do to minimize the chances of becoming the next victim.
