Today is the Yahrzeit of my grandfather, R' Nison Gordon, and I'd like to share with you a conversation I had my father, R' Larry Gordon, about R' Nisson. R' Nison traveled from Poland when he was 18-years-old to report on life in New York City as the American correspondent for a Polish newspaper. Later he would became a well know Yiddish writer, writing for “The Day,” “The Day Morning Journal,” and “The Algemeiner Journal,” during a career that spanned over 45 years.

Chaim Meisels, 29, is the great-grandson of the Satmar Rebbe, R' Beirach Moshe. About eight years ago, Chaim chose to immigrate to Israel and enlist in the IDF. Rabbi Sholom Duchman is the director of Colel Chabad. The organization was founded in 1788 and is the oldest continuously operating charity in Israel. The institution runs a network of soup kitchens and food banks, dental and medical clinics, daycare centers, widow and orphan support, and immigrant assistance programs.   Natan Gamedze (born 1963, Swaziland) is today a Rabbi and lecturer but that is certainly not where he started. Born to the royal lineage of the Gamedze clan of the Kingdom of Eswatini, he converted to Judaism, received rabbinic ordination, and now lectures to Jewish audiences all over the world with his personal story as to how an African prince became a Black Haredi Jewish rabbi.  

Rabbi Yoseph Vigler was born in Cape Town, South Africa and raised in Springs, a small shtetl an hour from Johannesburg. After studying in yeshiva at Ateres Yisroel in Bayit Vegan, Kfar Chabad, Kollel in New York and in Melbourne Australia. Rabbi Vigler received Smicha from the Chief Rabbinate in Eretz Yisroel and Shimush L'Rabbonus in various areas of Halacha. Miriam Peretz is an Israeli educator and public speaker.  After the deaths of two of her sons during their service in the Israel Defense Forces, Peretz became a lecturer on Zionism and living with loss. She ended up losing the election to Isaac Herzog. Mordechai Shapiro was born in 1989 in Monsey, New York. Born into a musical family, his father is a chazzan and his mother has a background as a trained opera singer. He learned in yeshiva in Ashar, Netiv Aryeh, and Yeshivas Bais Yisroel. Shapiro made his musical debut as the star soloist of the Miami Boys Choir. After leaving the choir, Shapiro took a break from music until his voice transitioned sufficiently. He was a student of legendary voice teacher William Riley. He worked in other jobs and was a regular at birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, engagements, and as a one-man-band. Eventually, he began performing at weddings and other Jewish events as an independent artist.  Mordechai is one of Jewish music's hottest and most gifted performers. He also teaches music at HANC. He has been described as having the "ability to do things with his voice no one else in this business can". Tzili Schneider is a veteran teacher, a member of the Orthodox mainstream, the mother of eleven and a woman who cares. Deeply.   Tzili grew up in Meah Shearim surrounded by all shades and hues of Jewish life. She remembers as a little girl dancing joyfully with soldiers following the capture of the Kosel at the end of the six-day war.   As she grew up, Tzili noted that the general atmosphere in Israel outside the sheltered alleyways of her youth was diametrically different. She began to encounter hostility and mistrust, dissension and stigma.   In fact, when she worked as a teacher, she rode the public bus every day alongside another staff member. But they never spoke because Tzili was religious and the other woman was not.   Tzili desperately wanted to do something to bring her people together again.   In 2012, she fulfilled her dream. Larry Gordon was born and raised in Brooklyn, and has six children; including Nachi Gordon, co-host of Meaningful People Podcast. He is a veteran journalist, writing stories on Jewish life and related issues for thirty years. He is also the acknowledged creator of modern Jewish radio. The Airley's made aliyah from the United States in 2006. Binyamin attended yeshiva, spent time in Eilat, and worked on the family's farm, including most Shabbats.   Binyomin Airley joined the front lines of the battle VS Hamas to secure the land of Israel and protect the Jewish people. He unfortunately was killed in battle.   At his shloshim, a moving kumzitz led by Shlomo Katz began with people singing softly in their seats and evolved into heartfelt t'filah with people standing and swaying, arm in arm, many with tears in their eyes. Jennifer interrupted the singing in the middle of a song and commented that she noticed too many sad faces in the room. She explained that this was not meant to be an evening of crying. It was meant to be an evening to honor Binyamin and open our hearts using songs for t'filah. She begged that people open the gates of Shamayim with t'filah b'simchah, even with the pain. Jennifer teaches by example how to keep going. This week we sat down and spoke with Yossi Landau from ZAKA. Founded in 1995, Zaka's volunteers arrive at the scene with one mission: to recover the bodies of those who die in an unnatural way.   In Judaism, a person must be buried whole. ZAKA's crews work tirelessly to recover as many body parts as they can from the scenes they are called to.  It's considered the greatest mitzvah a Jew can perform for another person.  Yossi Landau has been with the organization for 33 years and has been all over the world. Just as drips of water over millennia can carve out caves and canyons, one small mitzvah multiplied several times over can move mountains as well. That's the belief of Dr. Jonathan Donath, a legendary chiropractor in White Plains, New York, who got an epiphany in 2018 while dropping a dollar bill into the tzedakah box at his shul. “No matter how much money I give to charity, I still get a mitzvah every time I drop a dollar in,” he thought. “How can I guarantee that I do this mitzvah every day for a buck?” He looked for an organization that was doing this and couldn't find one. Yehiel Kalish is a former Illinois House of Representatives member and currently serves as the CEO of Hatzalah, the largest volunteer ambulance service in the United States. Kalish is the only rabbi to serve in the Illinois state legislature. He is a chazzan at Shaarei Tzedek Mishkan Yair in Chicago, and the brother of Dafna Michaelson Jenet, a member of the Colorado House of Representatives. A member of Agudas Yisroel of America's board of trustees, he established an Aguda office in the Chicago area and served as the AIOI Midwest Regional Director before ultimately becoming the organization's vice president for development and state relations.
