In the third of our four-part series on climate change and the threat to maritime cultural heritage, Professor Lucy Blue speaks to Dr Georgia Holly, Project Manager of the Cultural Heritage Framework Programme (CHFP), that sits under the umbrella of Ocean Decade Heritage Network (ODHN).  Remarkably, it is the only programme that integrates the marine cultural heritage into the Ocean Decade and is recognised by mainstream ocean sciences. Discover how the CHFP engages with maritime cultural projects from around the globe and once a project is endorsed, it gets access to a whole host of benefits including training and networking, and support and visibility of the Network. Hear how SeaVoice, their online magazine champions projects by people who work and live near water and encourages us not only to appreciate these precious resources but inspires constructive action in terms of promoting and protecting marine cultural heritage. Dr. Georgia Holly thanks the CHFP and SeaVoice teams for making these projects and activities possible

Professor Lucy Blue speaks to Dr Athena Trakadas, Co-founder and Co-Chair of the Ocean Decade Heritage Network (ODHN) about the role of cultural heritage within the United Nation's Ocean Decade, as part of our mini-series on climate change and its impact on marine and coastal heritage. Hear how the Ocean Decade endeavours to bring marine cultural heritage experts together with the other ocean scientists.  Sitting within the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-30), is an initiative of housed in the UN's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and aims was set up to meet the goals of sustainable development, particularly goal STG SDG 14 – life under water - as part of the UN's 2030 Agenda. Whilst the value of cultural heritage might be intuitive to heritage practitioners working with communities that live on the sea, it was more difficult to demonstrate to others in the oceanographic sciences the necessity of addressing heritage.  However, the inclusion of cultural heritage in the discussions expanded the number of societal outcomes of the Ocean Decade, and participation in conferences and policy forums has helped bring visibility to cultural heritage at the inter-governmental and national levels.  Nonetheless, changes in policy and governance are still needed to create a more integrated, holistic, and sustainable approach, and working to change minds remains the biggest challenge! The hope is that the UN Ocean Decade will change perspectives and bring about the ‘Ocean We Want' inclusive of cultural heritage.

Robert explains how Fugro is at the forefront of addressing this challenge, using advanced technologies such as AI and machine learning to collect and analyze oceanic data. This data is not just vital for scientific research but also has practical applications, from laying underwater cables to understanding the ecosystem impacts on climate. We also explore how public-private partnerships and the sharing of ocean science data are essential for tackling global environmental challenges. Robert shares insights from Fugro's involvement in initiatives like Seabed 2030 and UNESCO's Ocean Decade for Ocean Science, highlighting the importance of collaboration in driving large-scale impact. But it's not just about data collection; it's about creating shared value. Robert discusses how Fugro balances commercial objectives with environmental preservation, emphasizing the need for long-term engagement with stakeholders to redefine value beyond shareholder returns. Join us as we uncover the future of ocean health, the technological innovations shaping the field, and the critical need for comprehensive geo-data to ensure a sustainable future for our planet. Could geo-data be the key to unlocking the mysteries of our oceans and safeguarding our environment? Tune in to find out, and share your thoughts on how technology can help us navigate these uncharted waters.

“The Ocean holds the keys to an equitable and sustainable planet. Join the revolution to unlock innovative ocean science solutions.” That is the opportunity and challenge posed by the Ocean Decade, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). Launched in January 2021, the Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for a wide range of stakeholders across the world to engage and collaborate outside their traditional communities to trigger nothing less than a revolution in ocean science. This is clearly a topic to explore on the Engineering With Nature® Podcast. In Season 6, Episode 3, host Sarah Thorne is joined by cohost Amanda Tritinger, Research Hydraulics Engineer in the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory of the Engineer Research and Development Center, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Amanda was recently named Deputy Program Manager for EWN. Together they welcome Courtney McGeachy, Director of the Ocean Visions – UN Decade Collaborative Center for Ocean-Climate Solutions. Amanda and Courtney recently met at the State of the Coast Conference in Louisiana where they were on a couple of panels together, including one discussing nature-based solutions (NBS). Amanda thought Courtney would be an inspiring guest, and she certainly was. The Ocean Visions – UN Decade Collaborative Center is a partnership with Ocean Visions, Georgia Tech, and the Georgia Aquarium. Courtney describes Ocean Visions as a nonprofit startup focused on innovations and solutions for the fight against climate change. The UN's Ocean Decade is designed to take us from “the ocean we have to the ocean we want.” The Ocean Decade has seven desired “Ocean Outcomes,” including a clean ocean, a healthy and resilient ocean, a productive ocean, a predicted ocean, a safe ocean, an accessible ocean, and an inspiring and engaging ocean. “I think these are all important because they touch on not only everything that we need from a scientific lens but also what we need from a personal and community lens. There's no point in making the ocean safe and healthy if it's not accessible to all of us.”Courtney notes that there are a lot of different opportunities when it comes to nature-based solutions. “We want to make sure that we are creating opportunities to leverage these nature-based solutions to help fight climate change. I think Jane Lubchenco said it best. We were sort of trying to change the narrative from the ocean being a victim to the ocean being a solution to help us fight climate change.”In closing, Courtney summarizes her “call to action” for policy and decision makers. “Give innovations and solutions a fighting chance. With every solution, there are risks and side effects. So, I encourage policymakers to think of the ocean and climate crisis as a public health crisis because they're quite similar. I would also encourage policymakers to find the resources. Step up to the plate financially.”Amanda's call to action is to not put solutions into a box—consider this OR that. “Why not both? The huge takeaway from this conversation is that there are cobenefits. There's a toolbox—a suite of tools—there's no reason we can't combine them. There's redundancy in our resilient solutions that work together and, while protecting our communities, can also protect our citizens while helping to protect our ocean, which is our incredible resource that we might taking for granted right now.”For more information and resource links, please visit the EWN Podcast page on the EWN website at https://www.engineeringwithnature.org/ • Amanda Tritinger at LinkedIn• Courtney McGeachy at LinkedInThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5872676/advertisement

The world oceans cover just over 70 percent of the planet. The ocean produces about half of the oxygen that sustains Earth, feeds and employees millions. It's also pivotal to regulating the climate as it absorbs massive amounts of carbon dioxide. In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 8 as World Oceans Day “to celebrate our world's shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it.” Concern for the vast and mighty ocean has prompted the U.N. to launch the Ocean Decade — 10 years of challenges to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources by 2030." Understanding, appreciating, and protecting this massive resource has surfaced as a major international priority. But, when it comes to knowing our oceans in-depth, humanity is still in the dark. In this episode of Pod of the Planet, entitled “Mapping the Mysterious Deep,” Marie DeNoia Aronsohn speaks to Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory marine geophysicist Vicki Ferrini about a project to better understand our world oceans. The Nippon Foundation - GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project has an ambitious goal: to create a comprehensive, detailed map of the entire ocean floor by 2030.

I am so excited for this - a UN proclaimed and dedicated decade to ocean science and generating ocean knowledge to achieve the sustainable development goals - particularly SDG 14 - Life below water. In this episode, I explore what the ocean decade is, why it is important, and how you can get involved - both in generating ocean knowledge but also how to be part of the participative, transformative, and two-way processes that the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is proposing. Podcast 9, 3rd June 2020 - this week SUT Education Committee Chair Susan John interviews Dr Garry Momber, CEO of the Maritime Archaeology Trust https://www.maritimearchaeologytrust.org which is hosted at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK. Gary is a member of SUT's Diving & Manned Submersible Committee and is a highly experienced scientific diver, author, and one of the contributors to our book for children 'Can a Lobster be an Archaeologist?' Garry talks about the exploration of humankind's underwater cultural heritage, ranging from diving on submerged Bronze Age settlements to 1st World War shipwrecks, of which there are about 1000 just along the south coast of the British Isles. He explains how technology is used to map the sites, and that yes, a lobster did help the team of divers discover ancient human habitations. Garry reminds us that sea level has risen by many metres since the last ice age, and that understanding what happened in the past will help us plan for the future. This is a change to the originally scheduled Pod9 on training which will be uploaded as soon as possible. Podcast 10 will be uploaded June 8th for World Ocean Day Support the show (https://www.justgiving.com/soc-underwatertech)
