One of the key themes of The Shelly Story is owning your own health. Although doctors, nurses, and medical professionals play an important role, we are the ones who are ultimately responsible for optimizing the health of our mind, body and soul. Helping to save her husband's life inspired Shelly to launch GIOSTAR Chicago - a leading stem cell therapy provider - which is how we met today's guest, Cain McQuinley. Cain is a prime example of the benefits of owning your health. He transformed his life by going against the one-size-fits-alfl treatment model prevalent in today's healthcare system. Nikhil Torsekar seemed to have it all: he had a loving wife and three kids, had attended a top university and business school, and had steadily climbed the career ladder at the world's top corporations. One day it all came crashing down: he lost his job, found himself in a bitter divorce, and had nowhere to live. Further analysis revealed that Nikhil had been suffering from undiagnosed bipolar disorder, oscillating between staggering highs and incapacitating lows for 20 years. After receiving the diagnosis at the age of 40, he began a journey of introspection and healing, and is now an excellent husband, dedicated parent, and thriving professional. He works in marketing with his wife Shelly at GIOSTAR, Global Institute of Stem Cell Therapy and Research, and they've written and a book and are working with Hollywood producers to modify the memoir for film.Today, we'll be speaking with Nikhil about what's helped him on his road to recovery – medication, cognitive behavioral therapy, and meditation / mindfulness. He has immersed himself in the teaching of many authorities on holistic healing, including Dr. Deepak Chopra.-----------Six years ago, Shelly Sood had a picture-perfect marriage, lived in an upper-class neighborhood, was married to a banking executive, and had 3 beautiful children. She was suddenly yanked from this illusion: her loving husband – who had suffered from undiagnosed bipolar disorder for decades – suddenly transformed before her eyes, filed for divorce, and became hellbent on her destruction. Hey friends! I'm so excited for you to tune into today's episode! I shared this last week in an IG live but wanted to have an open conversation here today on how we take ownership when life throws challenges our way. We have a choice: to grow with it, to grow from it, to rise and do better because we now have certain information or feedback on something. Often whenever we are faced with challenges, it is very human and typical for us to go down a worry spiral, followed by shame, guilt, and a myriad of other emotions. Yet, if we take a moment to pause and sit with our emotions, we will see that we are human. This means we can also control how we move forward after a setback occurs. Challenges, in my personal experience, are a win, a feedback form on what is going well in your life or what needs to evolve. Be it in our health, our relationships, our career, and anything else. Today's episode shares how I dealt with the results of a routine health checkup. At first, naturally, I panicked a bit, worried myself, and wondered how this was the case especially since I started living a consistently healthy lifestyle that's balanced and nourishing over the last 20 years. And then I paused. I did the very thing I advise my clients to do. I looked at all my evolution over time - all the positive growth and changes I have made in my life, my health, and my overall lifestyle. And then, I made a plan to refocus and shift things again, ever so slightly. Because change happens with the smallest shifts done consistently over time. You are human. You will stumble and deal with challenges - it's a part of life, but it doesn't have to be the main attraction in your life. I invite you to view your challenges as wins because every piece of information is feedback or data. And you can take that data and assess where you need to pivot, make your next move, all while honoring your emotions and intuition. While we’ve been lead to believe that we have to leave our cultural foods behind to be healthy, there’s a lot of talk about and look at how we have health AND our cultural foods and traditions. This week I talk with Krista Linares about how we can do both and reclaim our cultures.    About Krista Linares Krista Linares is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist specializing in diabetes management and prevention and serving the Latino community. Krista is passionate about Latin foods and flavors and believes the emotions and community that can be found in food are just as important as the nutrients.    Her company, Nutrition con Sabor is driven to see Latinos better represented in the health and wellness world, and promote health equity for Latinos. Krista focuses on dispelling myths about Latin culture and cuisine and, most importantly, empowering Latinos to incorporate their traditional foods and ingredients into a balanced meal pattern for both emotional and physical nourishment. Krista holds a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and currently works in private practice. What can You Learn from A Girl? In Episode 15 we explored that as I hosted Emily, Michelle, Lindsey, Ashley, and Nicole from Girl Scout Troop 3515 of the Hornet's Council here in Charlotte, North Carolina. They showed up reminding me of my inner Guru Gal energies of joy and laughter in balance with getting down to business and nurturing the world.  This episode is filled with several K.I.S.S. ideas like easy DIY products to save your lungs and livers using natural materials you likely already have at home and lots of Great Links Below! Did you know that , depending on how you decorate and clean that your inside air quality is likely worse than outside your home? Reduction of toxins in our homes was the main topic but then something really awesome and cool happened, that only a room filled with women can bring forth, we naturally began to expand our talk into how having the power to help ourselves is a way to actually expand and change our world Our generational Woman's Circle on that starts around minute *18:30 and goes on onto the last minutes or so rounding out a wonderful conversation!  After hearing about environmental health we got into... Holding our own Power and practicing our feminine attributes of nurturing by helping our families at any age Other ways we can honor the body What 12 year olds are thinking about their body, mind and actions in health How our personal actions are actually able to be social ones A very empowering chat on what is most important about having done this project DIY projects for the whole family and more....Please comment on the blog or show notes because they are excited to answer your questions!  One last Take away about helping the Next Generation and Yourself It is so important to hold space and opportunity for women's circles of all ages in order to pass on OWNING HER HEALTH. A really important reason to Share This episode with your children, family and neighbors with young women. Girl Scouts is an example of that and sometimes we forget the wisdom shares of multi generations will happen both ways. So don't always leave the young ones out of talks on sex, money, moods and personal power!
