Are you curious about how a one-woman startup became a global publishing brand? Then this episode is for you! My guest this week is no other than the wonderful Judy Piatkus. My UK friends might recognize her name from the Piatkus Books publishing house. And yes, Judy was the founder and CEO of the global publishing company Piatkus Books until she successfully sold the company in 2007. She now summarized her memoir in the award-winning book “Ahead of her time: how a one-woman startup became a global publishing brand”. As we will find out, the title of her book “ahead of her time” is quite fitting since Judy has been ahead of her time again and again. She is now an independent consultant, mentor, as well as the Founder of Conscious Café. Judy is based in London in the UK. A matter of honour or an encounter between fools?1. Billiard Ball. 2. The Renaissance. 3. Hopton on Duelling, section one. 4. History of the Due. 5. Hopton on Duelling, section two. 6. Decline of the Duel. ps. The Wild WestWhether acting on principal or an example of extreme folly, the duel captured the imagination of European society for at least three centuries. There was the duel involving billiard balls, an armed encounter between balloonists, and even a skirmish between two society ladies in Hyde Park in which one lost her hat to a lead round. Many lost their lives during these encounters, often for the most trivial of perceived slights. In France alone, over a ten-year period during the seventeenth century, over 2,000 aristocrats and officers were killed in duels. The sport certainly took its toll. There were duels in London clubs and even the Palace of Westminster, and once the middle classes took up the sport it became almost a contagion. One drunken duelist even faced his opponent naked. Yet eventually the habit died out, a victim of its own ridiculous nature and growing alarm in the political establishment. America developed its own form with the arrival of gunfights in the Wild West. These too were to eventually fade into history and legend. The Making Of A Publishing Legend with Judy PiatkusAired Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 4:00 PM PST / 7:00 PM ESTThere's a piece of advice that's often shared today, particularly in the new thought/awakening conscious arena, which is “follow your passion, believe in yourself, and the success and the money will follow.” If there were a competition for a poster child for that approach to life and living, there's little doubt that Judy Piatkus would rank highly among the contestants.Judy Piatkus is a publishing legend. In 1979, she founded what would become a global publishing brand— Piatkus Books —from her spare bedroom. A single-mother with a child with learning disabilities at a time when being a self-made woman entrepreneur was rare, Judy defied expectations, influencing, shaping, and giving rise to the cultural and professional perception of personal growth and development publishing. Long before the bestseller charts were packed with mind/body/spirit, business, and relationship books, Judy created a platform for new voices and leading authorities and experts in their fields, including internationally bestselling authors Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mary Berry, David Allen and Brian L. Weiss.Judy Piatkus joins Sandie this week to talk about her memoir, Ahead of Her Time – How a One-Woman Startup Became a Global Publishing Brand, which provides fascinating insights into building a company and brand identity, her learning experiences as an entrepreneur, the triumps and pitfalls, what worked and what didn't, how it felt to overcome obstacles to build the career she wanted from the ground up, as a truly self-made woman… and much more. 'I think we're going to have another watershed moment... there's going to be business pre-pandemic and business post-pandemic. And I wonder how many business books are going to feel out of date.' As a woman founder in publishing, Judy Piatkus is one of my heroes. Working from home long before it was fashionable, navigating caring for a child with special needs alongside the casual sexism of the 1980s, she quietly built up a pioneering company specialising in self-development. And along the way she transformed her own consciousness through the books she brought into the world. Her story reflects many common themes of entrepreneurship, women at work, the digital revolution and the the power of books and of bringing people together.
Judy Piatkus is an entrepreneur, publisher and business coach specializing in conscious leadership. She founded Piatkus when she was in her 20s while she was raising a family and grew the company to become an international brand. Piatkus published influential self-help titles such as Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabatz Zin, Many Lives Many Masters by Brian Weiss, and many more amazing books. Judy sold Piatkus to Hatchette in 2007, just before the global financial crash that she had shrewdly foreseen. She is now a keynote speaker, an angel investor, and a coach and mentor to start-ups. In 2011 she founded Conscious Café, a network that brings people together for deep conversations and connections. To learn more, I highly recommend her book Ahead of Her Time.

CJ Cooke grew up on a council estate in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She started writing at the age of 7 and pestered publishers for many years with manuscripts typed on her grandparents’ old Remington typewriter and cover notes written on pages ripped from school jotters. Finally, in 2009, her hard work paid off, and her debut novel, The Guardian Angel’s Journal, about a woman who dies and comes back as her own guardian angel, was sold at a four-way auction at the Frankfurt Book Fair to Piatkus as their 2011 superlead title. The novel was published under the name Carolyn Jess-Cooke in 23 languages, and was an international bestseller. Since then, she has published two poetry collections, a creative anthology (titled Writing Motherhood) and three further novels, with a fourth, The Nesting, due out in October 2020. Also a poet (published under Carolyn Jess-Cooke), CJ’s prizes for writing include a Northern Writers Award, an Eric Gregory Award, a Tyrone Guthrie prize, and she has twice received a K Blundell award from the Society of Authors. She holds a PhD in literature and film, and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, where she researches the impact of motherhood on women’s writing and inclusive approaches to literature. Based in north east England for many years, she now lives in Glasgow with her husband, four children, and a dog named Ralph, who thinks he’s human. CJ is currently working on her new gothic thriller, due out in 2021. In March 2020 CJ Cooke set up the Stay-At-Home! Literary Festival, in partnership with the creative writing incubator, Paper Nations, in response to Covid-19, and as a venture to provide people with accessible, eco-friendly engagement with literature. https://carolynjesscooke.com/ VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. https://www.lightingthevoid.comClaire Broad gave her first message to a relative at the age of 4 and started to develop her ability as a medium at the age of 21. Her hope was that through developing her skills, she might help others whilst better understanding the question of life after death for herself. She has 23 years professional experience, working as a practitioner in various ways. These include, 1:1 private sittings, public demonstrations, public speaking, teaching and writing. Claire is co-author of best selling book, Answers From Heaven, Incredible True Stories of Heavenly Encounters and the Afterlife (Little Brown Books, Piatkus) and author of What The Dead Are Dying To Teach Us (Watkins Media, 2019). Claire is accredited by the Institute of Spiritualist Mediums as a Registered and Approved Medium (RAM) and has collaborated with thought leaders and researchers in the field of psychical research in an effort to educate the public about genuine mediumship. Claire values integrity and professionalism above all else and has earned a reputation of being an honest medium because she is not afraid to doubt and question, nor own the times when she believes her mediumship has not been successful. Claire believes exploring the evidence for the continuation of life after death is important, not because people should be encouraged to become reliant on a medium or feel the need to look for signs that their loved ones are around them constantly, but rather because expanding our awareness to the possibilities of life it’s self and trying to understand the true nature of consciousness, may bring about the potential for healing, peace of mind, change and growth.http://www.clairevoyant.co.uk/Music By Chronox at https://www.chronoxofficial.comGuitar By Bundy

The October issue of Cosmo magazine has model and body-positivity advocate Tess Holliday on the cover. It was celebrated across the internet by many who lauded the magazine for championing body positivity and embracing larger bodies but it was also battled out on Good Morning Britain (by Piers Morgan) arguing that it glorifies obesity. She was also the founding editor-in-chief of Women’s Health magazine – the most successful women’s magazine launch of the decade. In 2017 Farrah was cited as one of only 36 BAME leaders in The Guardian UK’s 1000 Most Powerful list. Her first book is out now called The Discomfort Zone all about the power of discomfort, published by Piatkus, which we discuss a lot in this episode.Quotes from the episode:"Being vulnerable is what you have to do as a writer, that is your job.. sometimes that means putting yourself up for scrutiny from other people, but that's what makes the best writers.""You can have it all....ish. It's naive to think you can have everything.""True heroes are never that popular.""Most of success is the climb; the grind to actually get to success. The grind should be the enjoyable bit."
