This week, I'm excited to share something transformative I just learned from the book "Coming Alive" by Barry Michels and Phil Stutz. Have you ever felt so completely demoralized that you couldn't see a way forward? That crushing feeling when you believe nothing will ever get better? I've been there too.In this episode, I'll talk about a powerful tool from this book that can gently pull you out of those darkest emotional spaces and reconnect you to hope, resilience, and even joy. Through the story of Ann, a woman devastated by another failed relationship, we explore how we often chase external solutions (like the perfect partner) to fix our internal emptiness, only to find ourselves more disappointed when they don't deliver the salvation we crave. Here's what you'll learn from this episode:• How to identify when you're caught in the trap of "false hope" and why external achievements, relationships, or possessions never fill the void we think they will• The simple 5-step Mother Tool practice that can lift you out of demoralization and reconnect you to your inner strength, even when everything feels hopeless• Real examples of how this tool has helped people transform their creative blocks, unhealthy relationship patterns, and even approach chronic pain with renewed resilienceWhen we're at our lowest, what we need isn't logic or problem-solving – we need love. That's exactly what the Mother Tool helps us access: an unconditional, nurturing presence inside ourselves that sees our worth regardless of our circumstances. This practice isn't about fixing your external situation; it's about shifting your emotional state so you can show up to life with clarity and strength. Because when you reconnect to that loving presence within, you discover the resilience to keep going – not because things are perfect, but because you're loved.Join me for this heart-opening episode where I walk you through exactly how to use this tool in your own life. And if you're craving more connection and growth, remember that my Flying Higher mentorship program offers weekly classes, coaching, and a beautiful community of almost 300 women supporting each other's journeys. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageWe've all heard the advice: "Just change your attitude!" But what if that's not enough? In this eye-opening exploration of Phil Stutz and Barry Michels' groundbreaking book "The Tools," we discover why attitude adjustments often fail where specific behavioral tools succeed. The frustration cycle is familiar—we commit to change, but our behaviors remain stubbornly the same. As Stutz and Michels powerfully state, "A new attitude means nothing unless followed by a change in behavior." This episode unpacks their revolutionary approach to personal transformation through five distinct psychological tools designed to combat specific challenges: the Reversal of Desire for confronting pain and avoidance, Active Love for releasing anger, Inner Authority for building confidence, Grateful Flow for shifting to gratitude, and Jeopardy for maintaining motivation through consequences. What makes this wisdom particularly fascinating is how these modern psychological techniques quietly echo traditional Judeo-Christian virtues—a connection we explore while examining the practical applications of each tool. Whether you're struggling with procrastination, fear, anger, or lack of confidence, these tools offer concrete procedures to implement at the exact moment you need intervention. This isn't about passive enlightenment; it's about active engagement with your challenges. As we emphasize at the Mojo Academy, the goal isn't just to collect wisdom but to move from theory to action, creating real and lasting changes in our lives. Ready to build your psychological toolkit and transform those good intentions into meaningful behavior change?Key Points from the Episode:• Attitudes alone cannot control behavior—specific procedures are required for specific problems• The Tools presents five practical psychological techniques developed by psychotherapists• Reversal of Desire helps confront pain and avoidance to take action• Active Love releases anger through cultivating forgiveness • Inner Authority builds self-confidence by connecting with inner strength• Grateful Flow shifts from negativity to gratitude• Jeopardy encourages sustained effort by visualizing consequences of inaction• These tools parallel traditional Judeo-Christian virtues despite secular presentation• Consistent application of these tools transforms theory into actionBe sure to check out our show page at teammojoacademy.com, where we have everything we discussed in this podcast, as well as other great resources.Other resources: Want to leave a review? Psychotherapist Barry Michels visits Google to discuss his book “The Tools,” which he co-authored with psychiatrist Phil Stutz. The book presents a uniquely effective set of four tools that bring about dynamic change in the present and impart a greater understanding of the depth and complexity of the human condition. “The Tools” addresses the most common complaint patients have about psychotherapy: the interminable wait for change to begin. Barry Michels, an LA-based therapist, was frustrated by his inability to bring his patients faster relief from the issues that plagued them. He found a mentor in Phil Stutz, a psychiatrist who years before devised a methodology that arose from a similar disenchantment. The traditional therapeutic model sets its sights on the past, but Stutz and Michels employ exercises that access the power of the unconscious and effectively meet the most persistent problems people face--and the results are electrifying. Stutz and Michels are much sought-after--a recent profile in The New Yorker touted them as an "open secret" in Hollywood--and treat a high-powered and creative clientele. This book transcends the typical self-help genre because of its paradigm-changing material, the credibility of its authors, and the instant appeal and empowerment of its message. With “The Tools,” Stutz and Michels allow you to realize the full range of your potential. Their goal is nothing less than for your life to become exceptional—exceptional in its resiliency, in its experience of real happiness, and in its understanding of the human spirit. I recently watched Stutz, a Jonah Hill Netflix documentary about his relationship with his therapist, Phil Stutz! After watching it, I bought his book, "Tools", that he co-authored with Barry Michels. Loved the Stutz documentary and the book! This my review of Stutz, and particular, his tools to address pain and unlock your life force.
This was such a special episode for me to interview Joe Newman, author of Raising Lions. Joe tells us his story of growing up with ADHD and how he came to write his book. We discuss the importance of understanding connection and power. Joe discusses why boundaries are so important and how our past childhood experiences affect how we parent. We go over so much more in this jam-packed episode. This is not one you want to miss. I know there is so much you will take away from this episode. What we go over with Joe Newman on Raising Lions:Joe's story about how he wrote his book Raising Lions and the work he does. Why it is so important to understand connection and power with your child. Why eggshell parenting isn't helping with behavior - when the parent backs away from challenges and does anything not to have a tantrum. The reason why strong-willed children need stronger boundaries. Why you need to take parts of old school and new school parenting to actually make it work. How giving too many choices is not helpful. Why doing less is more helpful. How Joe reframed timeouts to breaks.Breaks - what they really are and how and when to use them. Why no doesn't mean no when you don't set boundaries. How to get kids to take breaks when they aren't listening. It takes time to undo children's behaviors. It can sometimes take multiple experiences. It's always us, as parents, it's so critical to understand the dynamic of how you are dealing with your child. We are still at the beginning of understanding children. This requires stepping out of old paradigms and looking for what works for you and your child.Ask yourself, is what you are currently doing working? And if not, what can you do to shift the lens on what you are doing? Why ADHD children usually have sleep struggles.Kids need different things, some need approval, and others need power.Your child is not always seeking attention from you.Look at your behavior and past experiences as a parent. This affects your child.Children don't learn cognitively first. They learn from experiences.Learn more about Joe Newman - Raising Lions https://www.raisinglions.com/Youtube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/@raising_lionsBio - Joe Newman likes kids with attitude because he was one. In 1970 he was diagnosed with ADHD & medicated. His book, Raising Lions, is the culmination of a 30-year journey working with the most difficult kids and a desire to bring a new, more effective perspective to our educational institutions and families. He teaches parents and teachers simple, practical methods to understand and motivate all our children. In 2018 UCSB conducted a year-long study on how his method improved student behavior, motivation, and engagement in Pre-K through 6th-grade classrooms. “I love pain“ “Bring it on” “Pain sets me free” These are words of advice from the book ‘The Tools' by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels. In their book, they advise shouting these words every time you have the feeling of fear / pain. It might be right before you embark on something that makes you feel resistance or uncomfortable. It may be when you have awful thoughts and paint a picture of negativity in your mind when you think of something that scares you, like having a show or selling for the first time. The book went on to explain a super strategy for separating the feeling of pain from the thoughts we have in our mind and I have been using it this week with much success. I share what the strategy is and how I have been using it in today's episode.
In today's episode, you'll learn how to master your mindset from top level experts in the industry. Mindset is one of the 6 Pillars of Human Optimization - but this episode isn't your typical self-help advice.
Garrett Shea wants to bring poetry to pop. And if a song happens to save a life, that isn't too shabby either (stay tuned to hear THAT story and song at the end of the episode). As a proud Villa Maria student, Garrett majored in Music Industry. There he connected with Grammy nominated producer Anthony Casuccio who produced Garrett's first album with the band, Breckenwood. If you listen to their two albums you can not only hear loads of growth in his recording and song craft, but also a shift from pop-punk to just… pop. The pull of pop eventually led Garrett away from the band four years ago. He continues to write and record original songs, while having a blast in his cover band, The Red Letter Kings.Garrett talked about that “switch” that needs to go off in his mind and heart before he is able to release a new song to the public. It took him over a year before he was willing to put his song, Travel On up on Spotify.Garrett is also a music instructor who heads up the music lessons department at Guitar Center in Cheektowaga. They are putting together a Rock Show program where students get focused training for a week in a rock ensemble that makes immediate use of their skills and taste. You can keep up with Garrett's latest singles, announcements, vlog, and brisk gigging schedule on his web site, GarretSheaMusic.com.Show NotesGarrett mentioned a recent article by Buffalo music critic, Jeff Miers about the music scene in Buffalo. Garrett also mentioned his friend, Tim Britt who he thinks does a great job straddling the line between original and cover band vital to a band's success in Buffalo. Garrett also mentioned Matt Bannister whom he collaborates with as an acoustic duo. Garrett gave a shout out to his album art designer, Daniel Morris.Earlier in the show, Denis used the tool, Inner Authority by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels to help him bring some authenticity and creative energy to his upcoming job interview.Denis also mentioned that he is starting a therapeutic community in the form of a religion, which you can find out more about in the episode, We are Building a Religion. There is a very special first meeting coming up on Sunday March 31. If you want to take part, please contact Denis at Denis@TheLensPodcast.org.Denis mentioned Dennis McKenna's book, The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss.Garrett mentioned this fascinating Ted Talk on how lyrics in pop music have gotten measurably more repetitive over the years.
Max is an arborist and black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu living in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. He and Denis talk about the ‘street-readiness' mindset of Jiu Jitsu, and how training and experience has brought him on a voyage from warrior to protector.Show NotesYou can train with Prof. Max at Gracie Barra Vancouver. Denis mentioned a book by Jordan Peterson, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, in which it is revealed that the lives of lobsters are a fascinating study in our own struggle to establish a solid place in a hierarchy that determines our success and happiness in life, and it all starts with fighting.Earlier in the show, Denis talks about a workshop he went to in NYC where Barry Michels helped him cross a new threshold with The Shadow. It was yet another forward-moving experience fueled by The Tools. Denis goes into some detail regarding Rudolf Steiner's take on the shadow, wherein the shadow becomes a guide to new thresholds. Inspired by what he experienced there, Denis wrote the following Prayer of Repentance to My Shadow. The workshop was at a completely unique fitness, wellness, and medical facility, Shift where folks there treated Denis (and his fucking irresponsible shadow) with kindness and compassion. Denis also made reference to previous podcast episodes, including The Trip to Vancouver, an interview with filmmaker Chris Benker, and that time Denis' shadow waged an all out take-over, a cautionary tale told in A Predator Like Me.
Barry is taking Eastern/compassion meditation and westernizing it. He wrote a book about these "tools" that you can use to understand yourself better. And understand your reactions, your dreams, your disappointments. He'll explain how your subconscious stores information and memories. So that you can take advantage of it. This episode is powerful. Barry Michels has knowledge (and experience) helping people like you and me through therapy and his books. I highly recommend you listen to this interview.
