On the episode I chatted with return guest and photographer Jared about his latest Euro trip, photo project and his studio in OKC. In this episode of the Courage My Friends podcast, Capitalism and the mental health crisis, social worker, researcher and writer, Madeleine Ritts, researcher on mental health of Black communities, Michelle Sraha-Yeboah, and researcher and educator in labor issues, Jon Weier, discuss the current mental health crisis as an inevitable outcome of capitalism and whether good mental health is a benefit or a boon to our economic system. According to Ritts: “...Poverty, exploitation, alienation, these are inherent features of capitalism. So the degradation of physical and mental health is inevitable as long as we continue to live under the domination of the market. And I think in our system of racialized capitalism those forces will continue to disproportionately impact racialized people.” Speaking to impacts on Black communities, Yeboah says: “The field of psychology was born at the height of imperial expansion and colonial conquest. It was created to reinforce and serve the interests of the state. And so we see a lot of colonial rhetoric being processed through some of the methodologies and ideologies used in the field to reinforce a narrative about Black communities as being less than, as being subhuman, as misrepresenting their racial suffering. And these things have an impact today.” Reflecting on workers, Weier says: “I think gig work, contract work has been.. breaking down the bonds that can exist at a workplace..It's very hard to build solidarity. It's very hard to build a response or resistance to neoliberalism as these traditional sites of community and solidarity are being undermined in favor of an increasingly atomized workforce.” About today's guests Madeleine Ritts is a researcher and social worker based in Toronto. Her writing has appeared in Jacobin, Health Debate, Now Magazine, Aeon, and the Toronto Star. She has worked as a mental health clinician for over seven years, and has experience organizing around issues of homelessness and poverty in Ontario. Maddie worked on a community, outreach-based mental health and addictions team in downtown Toronto and recently transitioned to a position in long-term care where she provides psycho-social and palliative care support to residents and their loved ones. Michelle Sraha-Yeboah is a doctoral candidate at York University in the Department of Social Science. Her research examines medical histories of racial and colonial violence, mental health care service use disparities and holistic wellbeing. Her work is particularly concerned with the intersections of socio-historical and political factors impacting Black Canadians' mental health care service use patterns and treatment preferences. She attends to Black feminist theorizations of care to achieve anti-racist and decolonial mental healthcare service delivery for Africans in the Diaspora. Jonathan Weier is a professor in The School of Labor and The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at George Brown College. An established historian and educator, policy professional and commentator on social and labor movements, his research focuses on voluntary organizations, trade unions, political parties and other efforts by workers, social activists, and reformers to achieve progressive political, social and economic goals. Jon has been active in the labor movement and in Left politics for over 20 years and is currently a board member and the academic advisor for the Douglas Coldwell Layton Foundation.
Join us as we talk with Ella Ritts about her journey with art, science, expression, and self. Ella is a Program Content Coordinator for the Griffith Observatory, in Los Angeles, California who explores life and art everyday. — "it was always a comfort for me. Like in the toughest moments of my life, art was always there. It was a way for me to express like, you know, anger, sadness, frustration, angst, confusion, and, you know, all like, and be able to self-soothe. That was like the one tool that I had. And very recently I've come to terms with the fact that I'm a very highly sensitive person, like it takes more time and energy for me to process the world. So this like quiet time for creativity has always been like how I ground myself. And it was really important in my formative years." - Ella Ritts "If there's something that makes you happy, whether it's art or something else, like be earnest about that, be honest with yourself about what truly makes you happy, because that's what life is all about is seeking things that make you happy." - Ella Ritts — Generation Hope is a podcast from connect.faith; which is a new worshiping community of the Presbyterian Church (USA) unbound by location coming together at the intersection of creativity, spirituality and justice.

This week one of my favorite people and host of The Housewives Tonight podcast, Rit aka wivestonight Zooms straight into my kitchen and we have an awesome chat! We start talking about Monique and the counseling session she had with her Pastor and we discuss church counseling verses licensed therapist, if Candiace and Monique were ACTUALLY close off camera (we get the same flash back picture repeatedly) and the emotional investment this fight takes. Speaking of investments, we talk about how the Instagram/Bravo podcast community is so welcoming and encouraging and about the authenticity of podcasts and what happens when the hosts want to touch the sun aka the bravolebs that we talk about on the podcasts. And Ritt shares which housewife always tags him in her only fans posts. We then take a bit of a shift and talk about Kamala Harris and how awesome it is that a woman of color was elected as VP. And we go a bit deeper and talk about her mixed heritage and the conversation surrounding it and Ritt breaks down the Indian caste system for me. Next we go on a wild ride and talk about Surviving R. Kelly part 2 (Ritt was a producer on the show) and how the law doesn't favor women of color. And we dip back into the Potomac waters and discuss how all hands really need to point to Gizelle (my problematic fave-ish)Producing may be Ritts profession but this conversation was completely authentic! The self-help industry is FULL of concepts that are meant to inspire you into a better version of yourself—go big or go home, love yourself, rewrite your past—but what happens when they’re overused and lose all their meaning? How can they then motivate you to live happier and more fulfilled? And what about self-compassion? I remember reading Tara Brach’s book, Radical Acceptance, where she tells a story about a woman’s mother who was dying. On her deathbed, the mother opened her eyes and said, “You know, all my life I thought something was wrong with me. What a waste.” I can still remember where I was when I read that line. At that time self-compassion was NOT a part of my life. In fact, it was the exact opposite: I believed something was wrong with me and I was constantly looking for the fix. Kind of the opposite of self-love and self-compassion. The bright side is that one line prompted my quest to figure out what self-compassion was and how it looked for me. It was a cautionary tale—and I swore I would figure out a way to be kinder to myself. In today’s episode, I’m bringing you a conversation with my childhood minister, Gary Ritts. We started our conversation with self-compassion and went down a number of avenues beyond it into grace, empathy, Brene Brown, sympathy, loving relationships, and kindness. This is one of my favorite episodes I have ever recorded and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Listen to the full episode to hear: How self-compassion is radical self-care and what self-compassion can look like Ways that self-compassion can look for different people—and how to find ways to recharge yourself so you feel more complete and fulfilled Why compassion and self-compassion are a choice that requires practice by learning and doing How grace is something that is given to us—and why we can choose to accept it, even if we don’t think we are worthy Learn more about Nancy: Coach in Your Pocket The Happier Approach Book Live Happier Website --- The Happier Approach Book I’ve been working with women like you living with hidden anxiety every day for over 20 years as a coach and counselor.

Kristin Ritts memorializes her late husband Roy Ritts, a notable immunologist in this week’s StoryCorps. The Purple Heart recipient had his hand in early AIDS Research and worked closely with Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackman on Roe v. Wade. Ritts was one of the first to be awarded patents on monoclonal antibodies – which are antibodies made in a lab rather than by a person’s immune system. And he was involved in some of the first transplants in the United States.

Segment A: Herb Ritts While his name may not be recognizable, Herb Ritts’ portraits of rock ‘n roll royalty certainly are. His work will be showcased at the Chrysler in “Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits,” full of familiar images of famous faces such as Cher, Prince, and David Bowie that graced the glossy pages of Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Rolling Stone over the past 30 years. The exhibit, opening June 24th, also features never-before-seen images and video footage by the legendary photographer. We’ll have curators Seth Feman and Susan Leidy in the studio to talk about the monumental exhibit and all the exciting associated events, including rocking Third Thursdays and a lecture on Ritts’ work. Also calling in is former Rolling Stones photo editor Laurie Kratochvil and executive director for the Herb Ritts Foundation Mark McKenna, who both worked closely with Herb Ritts. Segment B: Brian Ramos OnStory producer Brian Ramos will be joining Cathy in the studio to discuss the show, which will be replacing the long-standing Car Talk on WHRO. The Austin-based show offers a look inside the creative process of today’s leading filmmakers and writers, and has been regarded as “film school in a box.” Ramos is part of a team dedicated to furthering the art, craft, and business of filmmakers and screenwriters, who bring the stories we love to life on our movie and television screen.
