Be guided through a symbolic journey inspired by Plato's Allegory of the Cave, using the Gyana Mudra to enhance inner wisdom and clarity. You'll visualize yourself as a prisoner in the cave, then experience liberation, the ascent to the outside world, and the return. The Gyana Mudra, formed by joining the thumb and index finger, symbolizes knowledge and focus, aiding in discerning truth from illusion. This practice encourages questioning perceptions, seeking deeper understanding, and cultivating inner enlightenment. Cultivate inner awareness through the simple yet powerful act of conscious breathing. By focusing your attention on the rhythm and sensation of your breath, you'll gently quiet the mind's chatter and tap into a deeper sense of presence. As you follow the flow of your breath, you'll observe thoughts and emotions arise and pass without judgment, creating space for clarity and self-discovery. This practice allows you to connect with your inner landscape, fostering a sense of peace, stillness, and heightened awareness of your inner self. This conversation reminds us of all the moving parts to achieve electrification and you will share in Jonathan's excitement as he describes Voltera's mission to serve zero-emission vehicle fleets and its quest to improve this entire industry. Check out Voltera's Playbook 1 (the first in a series of 5) to address the value proposition of charging infrastructure. The US-EU Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework, announced in March of this year, is a new agreement governing trans-Atlantic data flows between the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) – specifically data flows from EU countries to the U.S. that contain personal information of EU residents. The new framework is intended to replace the previous Privacy Shield Framework, which the EU Court of Justice found did not provide adequate protection of privacy, as required by the General Data Protection Regulation and other law.In this podcast, experts discuss whether the new Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework effectively addresses the concerns of the EU Court of Justice providing for a solid legal basis for future Trans-Atlantic data transfers.Featuring:Stewart Baker, Partner, Steptoe & Johnson LLPTheodore Christakis, Professor of International and European Law, University Grenoble AlpesPeter Swire, Elizabeth and Tommy Holder Chair, Scheller College of Business, Georgia Institute of Technology[Moderator] Paul Rosenzweig, Professorial Lecturer in Law, The George Washington UniversityVisit our website – www.RegProject.org – to learn more, view all of our content, and connect with us on social media.
Tony Daloisio begins Act 2 with a story of a recent experience he had at lunch with a good friend. Presented with what could have easily become a confrontation, he describes facing a “moment of truth” and how slowing down, opening his heart choosing to empathize deepened the friendship.Tony leads us into a discussion highlighting his own work as well as that of Robert Kegan. He weaves elegantly between inner and outer work, touches on the importance of self-awareness, and points us toward noticing the feedback the outside world is constantly serving up.He offers his divorce as a clear example of a wakeup call that he chose to answer. In doing so he consciously faced the man in the mirror, “took myself on,” as he says, and got about the deep, challenging business of making real, tangible change. Tony riffs on the role ego plays in how men maintain a shell they present not only to the outside world, but also place between themselves and their own inner beings. From there, he brings us into the “three portals: Behavioral, Psychological, and Spiritual.”We wrap Act 2 riffing on the importance of accountability and responsibility in leading a good, imperfect, Journeyman Life, and end with not only valuable gems of wisdom, but also actionable suggestions to begin to develop one's “inner guidance system.”Dr. Tony Daloisio was trained as an organizational psychologist and has practiced in that field for over thirty years, serving hundreds if not thousands of businesses, not-for-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, NGOs, and government agencies/military operations. His work with them has incorporated strategic planning and implementation, change management, team development, executive coaching, and executive education. He has been a professor in the MBA program at Georgia Tech's Scheller College of Business, teaching leadership and organizational change. In the early parts of his career, which began in education, he was an inner-city high school principal where he advocated for disadvantaged youth. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in the field of Organizational Psychology and Counseling Psychology, where he received a fellowship for his research in leadership style and taught graduate courses in psychology. In the early 2000s he forged a partnership with the late Dr. Stephen R. Covey, author of the blockbuster New York Times bestseller The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and then his son, Stephen M. R. Tony Daloisio opens Act 1 with his story of life with “Mother Mary”, his brilliant and extraordinarily troubled mother. Tony's mother was an “obsessive, compulsive, neurotic” parent who “ruled with an iron fist,” who did everything in her power to control her environment, including her children. Tony goes on to describe the energy of his extended family as “dangerous.” As a relatively young teen, Tony realized that he was actually his own person. Often forced by his mother to sit for hours at a time during which she wrote and would later take swats at him, he began to fight back by putting his hands up to block his mother's physical blows. “I never hit back,” says Tony, but he sent a clear message that he was no longer going to allow the physical abuse. Citing Viktor Frankl's “Man's Search for Meaning,” Tony points to the importance of choice and the recognition that a big part of creating his own path came down to the choices he had the power to make.Tony shares the lessons learned through his own traumas, and we touch on how trauma lives in the body. We wrap our first Act riffing on stimulus, response, and the importance of self-observation, self-awareness, finally bringing it home with wisdom about the values-driven choices that become available when one develops conscious, self-reflective practices.Dr. Tony Daloisio was trained as an organizational psychologist and has practiced in that field for over thirty years, serving hundreds if not thousands of businesses, not-for-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, NGOs, and government agencies/military operations. Why is change so difficult to maintain? How can exploring beyond quantitative data improve problem solving? This week Tony Daloisio, author of The Journeyman Life, joins Timothy R. Clark to discuss the recipe for lasting change and the possibilities of influence and intuition in leadership and business thinking. Here are some gems from the episode:Bringing Yourself to the Doorstep of Change (11:28)We only have two choices: will we change or will we change our belief about needing to change? Change requires conscious internal awareness and a willingness to reach the precipice of decision with the determination to do things differently. The Two Parts of a Rocket: Overcoming Gravity and Sustaining Change (16:57)People are like rockets. Most spend their time trying to muster up enough determination to bust through gravity, which requires a sense of urgency and focus that is created through crucible experiences. While urgency is a catalyst, it is seldom a sustainer. Sustaining change isn't as “sexy” as sowing the seeds of change, but a cadence of accountability and outside support will help us maintain momentum. A Leader Has Scalable Influence (24:43)Until a leader changes, nothing else can change. We cannot lead other people at a higher level than we are leading ourselves. Each of us, whether part of a team or not, has a brilliance side and a shadow side. Ignorance of this shadow side will cause our business culture to mirror our shadows instead of our brilliance. An Intuitive Approach to Possibility (33:11)There is a difference between advocacy decision making and inquiry decision making. Do we engage in problem solving with a determination to prove the validity of our preconceived notions? Or do we engage in exploration of the problem, relying on the contributions of others? Are we willing to hold our opinions lightly? Clint's first book, The Project Success Method, is a unique, proven, and fire-tested methodology that allows companies, groups, or managers to learn and develop consistency in the way they plan, schedule, manage, control, and close projects on time, per spec and within budget-- in as little as 5 days. Agile development has ushered in an obsession with adaptive planning and continuous improvement. But the collaborative effort of cross-functional teams that it relies on is all too often built without a strong foundation. Clint's current book, How Teams Triumph: Managing By Commitment, provides the missing blueprint. He is a proponent of conversation as opposed to communication; these days, leaders and team members alike often communicate well, but conversation brings clarity and that ensures the right things get done.

Data portability has been a hot topic of late, from GDPR to CCPA to the FTC’s recent Data to Go Workshop. To some, data portability is a consumer right to access and move individual data. For others, data portability means the sharing of larger swaths of data with other services and platforms to lower entry barriers to effective competition.Although both forms of portability aim to enhance consumer welfare and increase competition, data portability raises a host of issues, such as privacy protection, data security, and intellectual property rights. Additionally, there is evidence that data portability mandates, when used as a competition remedy, is costly, ineffective, and may reduce business incentives, and could entrench incumbents by making it difficult for smaller competitors to change their services and modernize their products. This comes as many competition agencies and legislatures alike are considering interoperability and data portability mandates to increase competition. And, Congress is set to release a report with recommendations for reducing the market power of online platforms, which may include these mandates. The Regulatory Transparency Project explored the hot topic of data portability over the course of a two-part virtual panel series entitled, "Data Portability Mandates, Consumer Privacy Protections, and Competition Law." This panel discussed the consumer protection and privacy implications of data portability, and the second panel turned to the use of portability and interoperability mandates in competition law.Featuring:- Peter Swire, Elizabeth and Thomas Holder Chair and Professor of Law and Ethics, Scheller College of Business, Georgia Institute of Technology- Liad Wagman, Professor of Economics, Stuart School of Business, Illinois Institute of Technology- Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna, Senior Counsel, Future of Privacy Forum- [Moderator] Svetlana Gans, Vice President & Associate General Counsel, NCTAVisit our website –www.RegProject.org – to learn more, view all of our content, and connect with us on social media.

Last week, the European Court of Justice released its much awaited decision in Data Protection Commissioner v Maximilian Schrems, commonly known as Schrems II, which addressed which privacy requirements governments and corporations within the European Union will be required to secure before participating in international data transfers. The court's decision casts serious doubt on many of the measures currently in place, most notably in relation to the United States's own national security and surveillance activities, and thus raises new questions about how the European Union would continue to interact with the global digital economy. To discuss these developments, Scott R. Anderson sat down with Peter Swire, professor of law and ethics at the Scheller College of Business at the Georgia Institute of Technology and himself a former privacy official in the Clinton and Obama administrations, and Stewart Baker, currently of counsel at Steptoe & Johnson and previously the assistant secretary for policy at the Department of Homeland Security during the George W. Bush administration.

On a day when there is yet another revelation about the extent of the NSA's efforts to collect all of the world's communications, I'm pleased to post Show #204, February 19, my interview with Prof. Peter Swire of the Scheller College of Business at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a member of President Obama's Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies. As one of the members of the President's panel, Peter had the opportunity and the privilege to both assess the NSA's programs and make recommendations about how to scale them back under the law. Because the range of the programs is yet to be known (assuming that the public will ever know the full extent of the NSA's activities), the interview reflects a snapshot of what could be discussed on February 17, 2014. Nonetheless, Peter's insights and reflections on the scope and impact of these programs should help inform the public and policymakers as we grapple with what has occurred, and is occurring. Thanks to Peter for taking the time, and I greatly enjoyed the interview. {Hearsay Culture is a talk show on KZSU-FM, Stanford, 90.1 FM, hosted by Center for Internet & Society Resident Fellow David S.
