Ernst & Young LLP is developing a generative AI tool for tax professionals that's meant to automate repetitive data work and make tax planning more efficient. The Big Four company is investing $1.4 billion into gen AI globally. Other Big Four firms have made similar pledges. The investments are in part a bet that the technology can fill in some gaps from the longstanding accounting shortage. But implementing the technology in tax departments is difficult, in part because of how often policies change and the vast amount of data. Daren Campbell, leader of EY Americas Tax Technology and Transformation team, gave Bloomberg Tax an inside look at how his team seeks to overcome these challenges, where the technology is today, and what's next. Kids get asked all the time what they want to do when they grow up. High schoolers get asked what their plans are after graduation. College students get asked the same thing, with a big emphasis on work. But we never ask the most important question that foundationally will prepare a kid for success: What kind of person do you want to become? What a kid does professionally is important. We want them to be responsible for themselves and become self-sufficient. But it's only one part of the life equation- and it's not the most important. A key phrase we've used over the years that resonates with parents is, “You can be successful in school and successful in your career but still fail in life.” We've found that if we put most of our focus only on what kids do for work someday, we miss the opportunity to help them build a meaningful life. Over the past few years, the IRS has increased its compliance and enforcement efforts focused on payment transactions between US and foreign persons. However, these new information reporting requirements for compliance can be confusing and intimidating for taxpayers. What changes has the IRS made to tax information reporting requirements? On today's episode of the Taxgirl podcast, Kelly is joined by Tara Ferris to talk about the new requirements for tax compliance. Tara is a Principal in the Financial Services Office of Ernst & Young LLP. In this role, Tara advises multinational financial institutions and asset managers on customer tax reporting and withholding. In addition, she focuses on process and control improvements to create efficiencies and reduce risk. Before joining Ernst & Young LLP, Tara served as Senior Counsel and worked on matters relating to FATCA, non-resident alien withholding and reporting, and international aspects of domestic information reporting. Listen to Kelly and Tara discuss tax reporting requirements:There's more emphasis now on reporting requirements, either for US payments to foreign persons or foreign income received by US persons. How has the expansion of information reporting impacted the professional tax practice?  How should tax professionals communicate to their clients and financial institutions that they work with which forums are important, and when they need to issue them? When working with financial institutions with clients who don't wish to be reported, how should tax professionals convince them that they need to give up the data, especially in countries where they may have built their entire system around the idea that it's secret? What should a taxpayer do if they think they're supposed to get a forum and didn't, or that form doesn't come through? Is that something that a taxpayer should have a conversation about with their financial institution or tax professional? Many clients struggle with the idea that they could have a reporting requirement that they aren't aware of or have reporting requirements they didn't even know existed. As a tax professional, how should one advise clients to figure out what those are? Kelly and Tara discuss reporting and the burden on the taxpayer to make sure that that information is correct, keep records, and balance the way they use their tax data. With the recent changes in tax reporting requirements, will taxpayers need to be reeducated on what is taxable and what is not? Are we suffering from an overreliance on tax forms to navigate this new territory? Now that more mainstream financial institutions adopt crypto in various forms, could this make it easier or harder for the IRS to enforce crypto reporting? Tara and Kelly provide their opinions about the long road ahead for crypto reporting and tax preparation. Tara speaks on her predictions of the tax reporting space in the upcoming years. I had the pleasure of co-charing a Q&A session with David, at PPN Knightsbridge, our networking event (2nd Tuesday of every month, come along!).From this, I listened carefully and intently, I learnt a few things. I also paused for reflection about some of the insights he shared with us, sometimes we miss the simplest of things. He had us all fired up and ready to go, feeling inspired to think bigger, and to REthink our life strategy. For more info about the man I speak about in this podcast, please read below:David McCourt is the founder and Chairman of Granahan McCourt Capital and has been one of the most prominent investors and entrepreneurs in the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) industries for the past 30 years. He has founded or bought over 20 companies in nine countries and is widely recognised as a transformational force. The Economist describes him as possessing "impeccable credentials as a telecom revolutionary". McCourt’s debut book ‘Total Rethink: Why Entrepreneurs Should Act Like Revolutionaries’ launched in the Summer of 2019 and quickly became a best-seller with the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Amazon, striking a chord with young entrepreneurs looking to disrupt the status quo. He is an Emmy award-winning producer who has collaborated with A-list talent including Angelina Jolie, Michael Douglas, Meg Ryan and Spike Lee.In addition to receiving the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ award from Ernst and Young LLP and the Harvard Business School Club of New York, he received the 2014 Award for Outstanding Alumni Entrepreneur from Georgetown University. McCourt was the first Resident Economist appointed by the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism and became the inaugural Executive in Residence for Entrepreneurial Economics and Innovation at Georgetown University. McCourt has been recognised by the White House for extraordinary accomplishments from a private sector business. The American-Irish Historical Society presented him with its Gold Medal, an award previously bestowed on Ronald Reagan, Mary Higgins Clark and Bono. In 2018, McCourt was awarded The Science Foundation Ireland medal for ‘outstanding contribution to technology and innovation’. About Total RethinkIn business, and in life, everything is changing fast, apart from how we behave. Our ways of thinking and making decisions have changed little since we lived in agricultural and industrial societies, but the problems we now need to solve are entirely different. It requires a revolution in thinking and behaviour to meet the challenges that now face us and avoid disaster we need to totally rethink the model. Part business biography, part business blueprint, Total Rethink explains how this can be done. Successful telecoms entrepreneur David McCourt lays out the reality of the dangerous situation we find ourselves in and suggests solutions which will empower everyone, including business people, politicians, diplomats, and teachers, to repair the damage we have already done, and prepare for the dramatic changes to come. Deborah Adleman on Compliance and Ethics Concerns with AI [Podcast]

By Adam Turteltaub adam.turteltaub@corporatecompliance.org The world has grown enamored with Big Data and the promise of Artificial Intelligence (AI).  As the next big thing, many believe that it will be transformative for business, and even medicine, exposing patterns that humans miss, and enabling far better decision making. But over the last few months, there has been a shift in the discussion as cases of less than compliant and not exactly ethical decisions were being made by the algorithms behind AI, reports Deborah Adleman, a Director with Ernst & Young LLP where she is the US and America’s Data Protection Leader and an executive within the Office of Ethics and Compliance and Risk Management. In this podcast she reports that at least one case gender bias started to emerge, and people from certain ethnic backgrounds were being precluded from hiring due to zip code-based decision making. This should set off alarm bells for compliance and ethics teams. To help manage the risk, she recommends not blindly trusting the AI.  Compliance teams should take the time to consider four areas that are important for generating trust in the AI solution: Ethics: Does the solution agree with the values, mission and code of the organization? Social Responsibility: Does it have potentially negative social implications? Accountability: Is there clarity as to how the AI operates and the decisions it is supporting Reliability: Has it been tested rigorously? Even before that, she advises compliance professionals to invest the time in understanding AI and the emerging rules:  both the European Commission and OECD have already issues AI principles. Listen in to raise your own intelligence level about Artificial Intelligence.

REITs Well Prepared for Lease Accounting Standard Changes

In the latest edition of the Nareit REIT Report podcast, Serena Wolfe, a partner at Ernst & Young LLP, discussed the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s lease accounting standard that took effect for publicly traded companies, including REITs, at the beginning of 2019. The new standard had been under discussion for 10 years or more, and “where we actually ended up is very different from where we began,” Wolfe said. The impact for REITs as lessors is not as significant as originally anticipated, and definitely not as large as for lessees, such as restaurants and retailers, she noted. REITs that are lessees, through a ground lease or a building lease, for example, “could face a large absolute dollar value on the balance sheet.” REITs, meanwhile, are largely up to date in adopting the new standard, according to Wolfe. She added that the new standard eliminates real-estate-specific lease guidance, meaning that REITs now have to follow guidance for leases of all assets. REITs will have to step back and look at their procedures and controls and figure out how they need to be adapted or changed, which is “particularly important for our public REITs that have internal control reporting,” she said.
