In this episode, we roll out with Bob Budiansky and Simon Furman, the legendary minds behind the original Transformers comics from Marvel and Marvel UK respectively. With Skybound's massive compendiums reigniting interest in both series, we dive deep into how a Japanese toy line transformed into a pop culture juggernaut. Bob shares how Transformers first landed on his desk at Marvel and the challenges of writing 50+ issues while constantly introducing new characters. Simon discusses navigating the complexities of fitting UK stories around US continuity and eventually taking over the US title himself. Together, they reflect on their favorite characters, what made Transformers such a lasting property, and the creative synergy—and surprises—between their respective runs. It's a must-listen for fans who want to go beyond the robots in disguise and hear the human stories behind the mythos.  Skybound's Compendium Set Kickstarter campaign goes until May 7, so be sure to back it here before time runs out: http://kck.st/4i3ts31.Support the show

Get full access to CHRIS - POP CULTURE & COMICS at chrisstup.substack.com/subscribe

Breaking in with Marvel UK and 2000 AD (the one-two punch for many British comics creators), artist Barry Kitson has enjoyed a long and influential career. You may know him from Transformers (with past guest Simon Furman),  his early DC work on L.E.G.I.O.N. and Azrael, or from the classic JLA: Year One (with writers Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn). He reteamed with Waid on Empire, a fantastic, underrated series about a supervillain who actually conquered the world. It started at the Image imprint Gorilla Comics, but was completed at DC. Since then, he's been a steady presence at DC and Marvel, penciling everything from The Titans and Legion of Super-Heroes to the Amazing Spider-Man and The Order.  You can follow Barry on all the socials: @BarryKitsonArt.__________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Transformers! Transformers, Transformers, Transformers. If you don't like where this is going, abandon ship now, because our guest today has been associated with Transformers comics for over 30 years. That's right, it's the British Bob Budiansky: Simon Furman! Simon was already working on a Transformers comics for Marvel UK, when Bob (the original writer and developer of the Transformers characters) chose him to take over the main US title. Simon expanded the Transformers mythos from there, developing an origin story that involved Primus and Unicron. He would continue to write Transformers on and off for every publisher that had the license, including Dreamwave and IDW. Did you know he also created and wrote the original Death's Head book for Marvel? Well, now you do. Some might say Simon is "more than meets the eye." __________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Today we continue our coverage of the ANNIHILATION SAGA, a project we're going to be tackling for many episodes to come! This week, we take a bit of a breather from the main action to delve into three mini series that are tangentially related to, or touched by, the Annihilation wave. "Annihilation: Silver Surfer," "Annihilation: Super Skrull," and "Annihilation: Ronan" were all wildly different from each other, but don't just take this description's word for it, go on and listen! Trade readers can find these in "Annihilation Book Two" or split between "Annihilation: The Complete Collection" Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.Also, a correction. Simon Furman wrote the back half of the original US Transformers line, many early Transformers UK issues as well as the beginning of the IDW stuff, but NOT the original miniseries. That was Bill Mantlo (#1-2) and Jim Salicrup (#3-4) followed by Bob Budiansky when it became an ongoing (#5-55).Next time, we will close out the first part of the Annihilation Saga with the main "Annihilation" series #1-6, "Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus" #1-2 and "Nova" (2007) #1-3. Trade readers can find the first two in "Annihilation: Book Three" or "Annihilation: The Complete Collection," Vol. 2 as well as "Nova" (2007) Vol. 1: Annihilation. Do not read issues #4-7! Those will be coming up in a couple episodes.

Borag Thungg, Whatnauts! Time for Drokk!, wherein Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester read the third volume of Judge Dredd: The Restricted Files. Time for another collection of B-Sides, as we read through the stories pulled from specials, annuals, poster books from 1990 through 1993. John Wagner inspires, Alan Grant does pretty much the opposite, and a new wave of Dredd writers incouding Robbie Morrison, Simon Furman, Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and John Smith try to secure their place of the craggy shores of Dredd, aided and abetted by Shaky Kane, John Burns, the mighty Paul Grist, Glynn Dillon, Colin MacNeil, Cam Kennedy and many more! On Episode 255 of the Twincast / Podcast, cast members talk about the latest news and developments in Transformers. First, the cast discusses the Hasbro Pulse exclusive War for Cybertron Trilogy: Quintesson Pit of Judgment 5-Pack, which includes the Quintesson Judge, Prosecutor, Bailiff, and Sharkticon, as well as Kranix. The group then has some fun guessing reveals in the upcoming Hasbro Pulse Fan Friday event, and discusses the leaked name and implications of the 3rd installment of the War For Cybertron trilogy: Kingdom. The crew checks out the recently revealed Transformers X Top Gun crossover figure, Maverick, and largely has good things to say, before pivoting to the future of the Studio Series line. They then take an opportunity to consider the soon-to-be revealed Masterpiece Starscream, the 3rd iteration of this character in the Masterpiece line, and what to do with all the previous versions of Seekers they've accumulated over the years. The group touches on Simon Furman's new comic, Transformers '84: Secrets and Lies #1 (following #0), concluding the fan service does a nice job pulling those nostalgia stings. Then, the show ends as it usually does, with a round of bragging rights where each member talks about their notable acquisitions since last episode.

In 2005, the Transformers comic license had found it's way to IDW Publishing and back into the hands of beloved Transformers scribe Simon Furman. Only, things didn't necessarily go according to plan in those initial issues as the man behind the keyboard spun a tale largely absent the well worn trappings of the franchise. To say the fan base was uneasy is to put it mildly so fresh off of the collapse of Dreamwave Productions. Thirteen years, more issues than any other Transformers universe, and the longest running singular continuity across the Transformers landscape later, and it's all coming to a close with the arrival of Unicron. Originally made famous by film legend Orson Welles in the 1986 animated movie,  this planet eating threat will put a bow on the most critically successful era of Transformers ever. To recap how we got here, we're joined by one of the hosts of the TransMissions Podcast, Charles Shelton and chart the entire IDW Transformers timeline from Infiltration to Unicron. We talk about how IDW has been forever transformed by the property, our predictions for how this is all going to unfold, and ask what's next for the nearly 35 year old franchise. http://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/6675154 Issues: Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 1 Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 2 Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 3 Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 4 Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 5 Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 6 Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 7 Transformers: The IDW Collection Vol. 8 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 1 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 2 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 3 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 4 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 5 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 6 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 7 Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol. 8   Like what you hear? This weekend, Shane Chebsey and his team have brought their not inconsiderable expertise of running the International Comic Expo shows for an inaugural event in the south-east coastal town of Margate in the UK. AEISD Leonard Sultana has been in attendance and has recorded the panels being held over the weekend - however, away from the panel room, Leonard managed to sneak some time in with prolific writer Si Spurrier who has found himself with plenty on his plate in recent years, with many projects occupying his time. Two of which - ANGELIC, with Caspar Wijngaard, Jim Campbell and Emma Price for Image Comics and MOTHERLANDS with Rachael Stott for DC/ Vertigo - were the main topic of conversation here. As the conversation went on, however, talk went on to another exciting, ambitious and, yes, intimidating project that Si has barreling out the pipe - Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN, for which he is writing one of the first books under that umbrella, THE DREAMING. That conversation was a whole meal in itself and so, include that here as a seperate presentation. Please do check out anenglishmaninsandiego.com for the rest of my chat with Si, as well as all of the other fascinating panels I recorded at ICE Margate, including Kieron Gillen, Simon Furman, Emma Vieceli and Dan Abnett. Lord Retail is joined by a cavalclade of Acme alumni including John Bethel (ep #106 Good Ol' Children of the Atom, ep. #185 America Still Needs Your Help), Jay Howerton (ep. 120 People v. Acmecast), Ryan Rubio (Acmecast #166 Weapon X-Files, Acmecast #141 Gijoey), and newcomer Devin Turner to bask in the glory of the Marvel cinematic universe, past, present, and future! Show Notes: Editor's Note: I don't like to over-analyze the episodes that I didn't host myself, but if I could throw one thought out there, it would be that Jon Favreau doesn't get enough credit for establishing a visual style that is able to be both unique to each director and character (Star-Lord's dancing intro in Guardians, the period piece of Captain America: the First Avenger) and transcendant of all genres and actors.Jermaine touches on Warner Bros. not getting the interconnectivity of the movies, the DVD shorts, TV shows, etc., and I think that's 100% true, but they've also clung to the super-stylized take that Christopher Nolan brought to Batman, even when it's not appropriate for Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, etc., as emphasized by the leaked inter-office memo concerning Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.Even though they haven't gotten too far into the detailed reasoning behind Edgar Wright and the other cast members leaving Ant-Man, maybe Wright, whose body of work has always been 100% his, Simon Pegg's, Nick Frost's and Jessica Hines', couldn't play ball with the visual language to which Marvel movie-going audiences have become accustomed. Wright's other comic adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a favorite of mine, made just $47 million worldwide, whereas the least successful Marvel cinematic movie, Hulk, still grossed $263 million. I also just want to clarify the creative credits for Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest: Drax the Destroyer came out in 2005 before Annihilation began and was written by Keith Giffen. During the Annihilation minis from 2005-2006, Giffen wrote Silver Surfer, Abnett & Lanning wrote Nova, Javier Grillo-Marxuach wrote Super-Skrull, and Simon Furman wrote Ronan. Giffen then wrote the unifying Annihilation mini series in 2006, which the Nova ongoing series by Abnett & Lanning spun out of in 2007 The Annihilation Conquest minis started in 2007, with Quasar written by Christos Gage, Star-Lord by Giffen (introducing the Guardians of the Galaxy as we know them today), and Wraith written by Grillo-Marxuach. Abnett & Lanning then stepped in for the climax mini series in late 2007/ early 2008, from which the Guardians of the Galaxy spun out.
