"I start every morning at the junior high, and we co-teach together. It's great for alignment in the program, for familiarity with the students and getting to know them and hopefully continuing in choir. Our students see that we collaborate. I like that they can see that because it shows them how to go about relationships. People need be modeled how to treat each other and work together and talk to each other.” -Daniel Gutierrez"It was super rewarding to be so invested in those pieces, and that's something that our middle schoolers are getting with conference performances. They're getting a set of songs for an extended period of time. We try to get our students to really invest so it can have an impact on them and in turn have an impact on the audience. That journey is just something that the kids don't forget, and that's why I keep submitting for conferences." - Blake RichterDaniel Gutierrez, the head choir director at Nixa High School, is an acclaimed conductor, clinician, and speaker nationwide. He has earned several prestigious awards, including Teacher of the Year for Springfield Public Schools, a finalist for the state award, the Springfield Rotary Award for Community Service, and honors from the Springfield Business Journal's 40 Under 40. Dr. Grenita Lathan, Superintendent of Schools; Springfield, MODr. Grenita Lathan views her role as chief advocate for Springfield Public Schools, its students and employees. She takes that responsibility seriously and keeps her focus on efforts to positively impact the 24,500 students and 3,500 employees who learn and work at SPSFirst off, the superintendency seems to 1be one of the most rapidly changing roles in public education. In your opinion, what is the primary function of a superintendent of a large public school district today?Whether it's through School Improvement Plans, or working alongside stakeholders, legislators, etc - How important is it for you to have accessible and accurate data when making decisions about your district's future?Have you noticed a correlation between parent engagement and student outcomes in your district?Preparing students for the “digital age” has been an evergreen term/phrase for the better part of 25 years now.  In 2023 what exactly does this look like anymore - “Preparing students for the digital age?”In my previous years as a public school teacher, I observed that large-scale technology rollouts can be disastrous in the absence of effective planning and implementation. Do you have any recommendations for other superintendents who are considering a district-wide tech initiative? The face of education is constantly changing. What is one recent trend that you think will have a major influence on school districts in the years to come?Is there one particular innovation or achievement that you are especially proud of in your time with Springfield?Generic and broad question - How do schools improve? Easy to say “test scores” or more resources or better teachers, etcSo UtopianFrom where we stand, the superintendent (like many “CEO” roles in organizations or companies) is a pretty thankless position.  How do you balance keeping the peace, motivating people, doing what's best for kiddos, providing resources to educators, etc without it all crumbling down on your emotionally?I always found it interesting how far down the road school leadership groups are working on the Vision, Mission, and roadmap for where the district is going for the next 5-10 years.  Talk to us about how much preparation goes into getting a district to be a top-tier district. When a district needs/wants resources in order to improve facilities, etc how do bonds and levees work?During the 2022-2023 school year, Dr. Lathan's work will focus around three key goals:Review and revise the strategic planIncreaSupport the showABC PodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alwaysbecoolpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thebobbykerrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/alwaysbecoolpodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebobbykerrYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@alwaysbecoolSummit LendingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SummitLendingUSATwitter: https://twitter.com/SummitLendingUSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/summitlendingusa/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/summitlendingkc/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/loantipskc

Hour 2 -  Happy Tuesday! Here's what Nick Reed covers this hour: Do you remember the stupid rules that limited what we could and couldn't buy during covid lockdowns? Bug spray, sunscreen, and seeds were all on that list. A Russian court on Monday sentenced one of the Kremlin's most prominent critics, Vladimir Kara-Murza, to 25 years in prison, after what was widely seen as a show trial. This marks the longest prison sentence ever handed down against an opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The owner of the Hotel of Terror has enough petition signatures to force the city to take a second look at using eminent domain to take his property. ALSO -  Kimberly Hermann with the Southeastern Legal Foundation joins Nick: In the fall of 2020, Springfield Public Schools held a mandatory “equity” training for all of its employees. In August 2021, Brooke Henderson and Jennifer Lumley, two educators in SPS, stepped forward and with the help of Southeastern Legal Foundation filed the first-in-the-nation lawsuit against the mandatory district-wide training. In the lawsuit, Ms. Henderson and Ms. Lumley alleged that the training violated the First Amendment because it compelled their speech and discriminated against their views that America should be colorblind. They also alleged that the district conditioned their employment on their commitment to equity, becoming anti-racist educators, and affirming divisive and discriminatory programming that promotes treating individuals differently based on skin color. Ms. Henderson and Ms. Lumley sought only a court order stopping SPS from violating the Constitution and a mere $1 in damages. The two lost the case and U.S. District Judge Douglas Harpool ordered Jennifer Lumley and Brooke Henderson to pay the district $312,869 in legal fees.

Here's what Nick Reed covers this hour: A scratched or slightly damaged electric battery might be enough for some insurers to write off entire cars, as for many electric vehicles there is no way to repair battery packs after collisions. Rev. Dr. Phil Snider and Rev. Emily Bowen-Marler wrote an opinion piece in the Springfield News-Leader titled "If scripture is our guide, we should support all SPS students." The story highlights Dr. Shurita Thomas-Tate as a caring individual who listens and learns from students, while SOME (Dr. M) school board members simply don't understand trauma. Dr. M was accused of interrupting a conversation at a racial trauma event on February 23. Officials with Burrell Behavioral Health, Missouri State University, Springfield Public Schools, and the local chapter of the NAACP are a part of this event. During the event, students were asked to close their eyes and raise their hands if they have experienced racial trauma. Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Burrell Behavior Health, Marquisa “Keke” Rover stated, "most of the students raised their hand." Dr. M, who was in the crowd, challenged that by saying, "It was only just a part of the room." How far have we fallen that we now think it's okay to lie to children? How will this incident not make children feel isolated?

The Change Starts Here podcast and host Dustin Odham went right to the source for this episode, the first to feature a superintendent, inviting Dr. John Jungmann of Springfield Public Schools to the program to share his wealth of insights. Jungmann has served Missouri school districts for decades, including seven years at SPS, and has dedicated that time to helping engineer what he calls a “student-focused, future-driven” education system. That illustrious career in administration officially came to an end May 21, when Jungmann gave his final graduation speech as a superintendent of a Missouri school system. For all that time spent molding young minds, Jungmann said his career got its start in a rather simple way. “I was inspired to be a teacher by teachers,” he said. “I'm the last of six kids in a traditional, small-Southwest-Missouri-town family, the first to go to college, and I went to college purely because teachers told me I could and I should.” Jungmann shared the stories of three educators in particular – an innovator, an encourager and a truth-teller you'll meet in the full episode – who helped shape his path to education. The duo also got into the less-glamourous aspects of leadership aspirations in administration, which often comes alongside family moves and tough decisions, and into Jungmann's next chapter post-retirement from the SPS superintendent role.

We then challenged them to “Play by Play” charades with a panel of judges (Don Louzader, Jeff Burnett, and Misty Ramsey). Again, they passed with flying colors. Our latest challenge for these two Hall of Famers, consisted of broadcasting the 1st Annual ACP Championship Event of miniature golf! My thanks to our host course, Fun Acre in Springfield, Missouri! Our finalists were Don Louzader (Two-time Open Champion at Fun Acre, ACP's baseball correspondent), C.J. Ball (Drury Women's Golf Coach), and Jeff Burnett (our Kansas City Chiefs Superfan). It was a tight race and our broadcasters filled our listeners with action-packed intensity as we moved from hole to hole. In the end, however, the bronze medal was awarded to Coach C.J. Greatest Hits #2: Steven Shultis on "Bad" Urban Schools (2015)

The Strong Towns Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2019 74:43

In this classic episode from 2015, Chuck talks with Steven Shultis, a longtime friend of Strong Towns, about low-income urban neighborhoods and, in particular, urban schools. Shultis started the blog Rational Urbanism to chronicle his experiences and thoughts on living in a poor neighborhood of a poor city—Springfield, Massachusetts—not out of necessity but choice. Steve and his family made that choice because their neighborhood offers, in many ways, an excellent quality of life—walkability, community, great local businesses, a beautiful historic downtown virtually at their doorstep, a spacious Victorian home—at a price that puts it within reach of people who could never have that life in Boston or New York. And Springfield is the kind of place that is built to be functional and resilient—the quintessential strong town. If you’re poor there, it’s a relatively humane place to be poor. You don’t need the expense of a car, at least. For Shultis, a Spanish teacher working in nearby suburban Connecticut who could have lived elsewhere, choosing to live downtown in his hometown was a form of “arbitrage”—a way to live "beyond my means, within my means." And yet, making the choice to build a life in a poor neighborhood when you could live in a middle-class one often means withstanding a lot of questioning of your motives and rationality. In today's podcast, he offers his responses to this predictable refrain:  "You can't live in that part of town if you have a family, or are going to have one. What about the schools?!" Raising kids in Springfield instead of its wealthier suburbs, Shultis says, has been the best thing he could have done. And his daughters think so too. There are challenges in sending your kids to an urban school in a poor neighborhood... but they're not what you might think. Listen to hear Chuck Marohn and Steve Shultis talk about: Challenging the narrative of "bad schools" with both data and personal experience. Why test scores aren't a good indicator of school quality. Whether any of the usual metrics of school quality are good indicators. How going through the "bad" Springfield Public Schools didn't slow down Shultis's kids academically—but it did challenge them socially, in ways that may have made them more well-rounded and capable adults. Why urban areas, even ones with high poverty, are not dangerous places to grow up. It's actually, statistically, less dangerous to be a teenager in a city like Springfield than in suburbia. Hint: the reason comes down to the top two causes of death for teens: auto accidents and suicide. What Springfield did wrong in trying to stem the flight of wealthier residents to the suburbs. And what Springfield did right, and has going for it to this day. Hint: a lot more than you might think!
