Building Your Personal Success Algorithm

The Truth Behind the Snapshot: Building Your Personal Success Algorithm We've all seen it: someone pulls up in a beautiful car, posts a picturesque vacation photo, or shares a business milestone on LinkedIn. And just like that, our mind starts to draw conclusions. They've made it. They've figured it out. Why not me? But the truth is, success is never as instantaneous as it looks. What we're seeing is a snapshot—a single frame from a much longer movie. That person smiling in front of the new house may have spent years quietly grinding, filled with self-doubt, maxed-out credit cards, and sleepless nights. They might still be in it, just in a different chapter. Their external “win” today could be the first fruits of a seed planted long ago in silence and struggle. Given we are all at different stages, it's important to have your own personal recipe. Below are some helpful steps as you build and grow. 1. Define What Success Looks Like for You Not your neighbor's version. Not social media's version. Is it more time with your family? Financial freedom? Creative expression? Peace of mind? Success without a personal definition becomes a trap of chasing what everyone else wants. Action: Write your own success mission statement in one or two sentences. Example: “Success to me is having enough financial stability to support my family while maintaining the freedom to spend time with them daily.” 2. Audit Your Inputs What are you consuming daily—content, conversations, people, environments? Every input becomes part of your algorithm. If you're only watching people who portray perfect lives, your brain will feed you unrealistic output. Action: Replace one unhelpful input with something inspiring and honest—a book, podcast, or community that shares the full journey, not just the highlight reel. 3. Collect Ingredients, Not Idols You don't need to be that successful entrepreneur or become that perfect parent—you just need their best practices. Take the ingredient that works for you, and discard the rest. Action: Identify 3 people you admire in different areas of life. Ask: “What's one habit they have that I could try for 30 days?” Test it. Keep it if it fits. 4. Build Feedback Loops What's working? What isn't? What are you doing just because you think you should? Real algorithms adapt. So should yours. Action: Set a monthly check-in with yourself. Ask: “Did I move closer to my version of success this month? What should I keep, change, or drop?” 5. Stay in Beta Mode Nothing is final. Life changes, goals evolve, circumstances shift. Don't lock yourself into a system that served the old version of you. Stay agile. Action: Journal occasionally on the prompt: “What does the next version of me need more of? Less of?” 6. Add Compassion as a Constant Any algorithm needs constants. In this one, compassion for yourself and others is non-negotiable. You're not a robot. You will fail, pivot, and question things. That's not the breakdown—it's the build. Action: Choose one self-compassionate phrase you'll return to when things get hard. (e.g. “I'm building, not finished.”)   www.BusinessFinanceAndSoul.com  www.CallTSG.com

Meet (Anad Rolyat) Construction supply business serving a local region (Anad Rolyat) Female owner, married with two children Retail and supply business serving a local region Been in business for 11 years Massive reputation for community engagement Working 6.5 days per week Thinking about work even when at home The bigger problem was this…when we reviewed her 2015 P&L…here is what it said… $5mm worth of sales… $50k of Net Profit (1%) 1%! $5mm worth of effort, work, marketing, sales, coordination, fear, worry, concern, frustration, stories, and people… $50k worth of Net Profit to show for it…she could go work for someone else and yield far more in far less time.   TO add insult, Anad's employee turnover was similar to a Taco Bell… Employees coming and going, turning over like a car that just would not crank. Anad was suffering from a variety of ills that plague the majority of business owners.   Only 4% of businesses ever see their 10th birthday?   NO…#1 reason is = they get tired and pull the plug Tired of hoping that next employee hire will fix everything and then left feeling broken Tired growing sales and rarely seeing or enjoying the profit Tired of being blind sided by the constant details of their business Tired of showing up to events hoping for a silver bullet and realizing that the only silver bullet available is that is relentless implementation of the basic fundamentals how business operates. Everytime you feel momentum, you are short circuited by chaos lurking around the corner in your blind spot.   “But I don't have a blind spot”  I didn't think I did either. But you do… The human eye has a location that cannot pick up light even why the eye is wide open…google it. I want to reveal four business blind spots that we all suffer from, and what you can do to solve them so that you can… Find and retain talent Grow your CASH profit (not just your P&L) Be liberated from chaos to make time for what matters most FIRST blind spot is our unspoken commitment to chaos…chaos has almost become a defacto strategy in our day to day business “Scott, I'm so addicted to chaos I don't know what I would do if things were slow and quiet!” Khaos = Chasm or a gaping hole. The sweat, effort, attention, and focus you give chaos is guaranteed to return very little long term.   SOLUTION #1 Commit to clarity over chaos.  How? Clarity comes by illumination, and illumination comes through light and understanding foundational things Many of us started a biz without even considering how the organism of a biz is built CONSTRUCTION OF A BUSINESS 5 Foundational Cornerstones Vision Mission Values Team Meetings Hiring Process Concrete Slab of documented processes 4 Systems (walls) of a business: Marketing, Sales, Operations, and Administration Stop obsessing over your product, and commit to building your process TRUTH: “Your product is not your product…your process is your product.” ACTION → write a clear and compelling vision of where your business is going is seven categories SECOND blind spot is micro-management We say micro-management, but no one has defined it. Even The Office tried to get it right, and here is how it sounded, (RIP AUDIO FROM THIS YOUTUBE (:00 to :13) (INSERT BLANK SLIDE) Why does talent fly fly away?   Is it because nobody wants to work anymore?  NO…millions of people want to work and want new challenges It is because they don't want to be babysat, or left all alone…they want leadership, and leadership is not micro-management.  They showed the RPM's of great leadership… Repetition - they did the right things over and over and over Predictability - they provided stability by doing those repetitive things Meaning - and they baked a professed meaning into the repetition and predictability I want you to think about your situation. Would you be accused of doing meaningful things, repetitively, in a way that creates the peace of predictability? Or… Would you be accused of reacting to small fires, chaotically, in a way that makes your team, your customer, and your partners confused? One simple way to avoid micro-management is to simply ask the right questions at the right time and avoid the wrong questions at the wrong time. The THIRD blind spot is admitting how much time is wasted everyday… Putting out fires that would put themselves out Recreating the wheel that could easily be delegated You bring someone new in who has “experience” and you expect them to know how to… Run a job like you run a job Run a report like you run a report Talk to a customer like you talk to a customer It must be trained at EVERY level of your business. Coach Bill Walsh is one of the most Repetitive, Predictable, and Meaningful coaches in the history of the NFL. In a book Coach Walsh co-authored he shares that he was so meticulous about scripting that… he would script the first 10-15 plays of every game He scripted how the 49er's receptionists answered the phones Is the first 10 to 15 days of a new employee scripted day by day?   Or do we practice the more popular strategy of “throwing them to the wolves”?  And excusing it with “well they said they had experience!” Or hiding behind the excuse “that's just common sense!” Potential employees can smell chaos, and all existing employees will eventually run away from chaos at their first opportunity. Want to retain the team you have so that it doesn't cost you a minimum of $10k to $20k per lost employee? SOLUTION #3 is to create a Master Process Roadmap so you can move to higher value tasks. ACTION → Write out a simple Master Process Roadmap, and brain dump every possible process you can think of. Review the MPR weekly during your team meetings and pick one process and take 3 to 5 mins to train on it every week.   You will bypass the crippling blind spot of wasting so much time, and create clarity for your team. CLARITY will keep your team more than any other strategy.   The Final Blind Spot is the myth that all money is your money. We all suffer from the same challenge as business owners.  When a receivable comes into our one or two or three bank accounts, our brains believe that most if not all of it is ours.   And because it is all lumped into 1, 2, or 3 accounts we feel way more cash heavy than we really are. Anad was generating about $420,000 EVERY MONTH…and yet only about $20,000 of it was actually hers to retain BEFORE taxes, depreciation, etc.  $420,000 → $20,000 Her brain said she was rich…her bank sent a very different message. Ever feel like the front door of your business is really small (where the money comes in)... And the back door is twice the size and WIDE OPEN? How can you increase your cash, and actually not have to increase your Total Revenue? You must begin a) subdividing every dollar that comes in, and then b) directing those subdividing dollars into their individual homes.   Do this over time and track it every week…you will watch your cash so it doesn't leak. Anad was totally unaware of her blind spots, but once she allowed someone else to open her eyes to them, she implemented these four solutions, and today… employes 65 people,  has 5 locations has a net income to sales of 9% (AND THE CASH to prove it)...up from 1% (with no cash) Every year takes 4 to 6 weeks away from her business while it grows without her Are you ready to be liberated from the chaos of your blind spots and creating a culture where people want to stay?

Today I have a special little human who joined me on the show to share their personal reflection of 2021 and what they want most in 2022.  Throughout this episode we are going to cover 5 steps to review your year and how to take action to win in 2022!  Be sure to bring your journal for this one, because if you want to make 2022 your year, this journey today is important!! Step 1: What Are You Most Proud Of? List all of the things you're most proud of: Obstacles Successes  Overcame: physical/mental/habits/space; look through your photos in the last year to help trigger your memory.  Major changes:  Finance Career Life Call to Action: What experience was most important to you and why? What steps did you take to help you move the needle Be sure to circle that really resonated with you. You'll use it later to make a fresh list for 2022.  Step 2: What Have You Learned? Ask Yourself & Write it Down: What went well in 2021? What were the most game changing things? What did you learn from it?  What were some mistakes that you made? What did you learn from it? Call to Action: Write what were the most important lessons and why? These are crucial and often overlooked. Step 3: What are you willing to let go of? Old projects and goals you set out to do This is all about revisiting old projects, ideas, tasks that you haven't really had an opportunity to wrap your head around. Resentment, anger, and upsets Letting go of emotional baggage Anger Forgiving yourself or someone Limiting Beliefs or a story you've been telling yourself Too old or too young to do this or that You can't do it because it's already been done  Never having enough time or the know how  You're not good enough or capable Not telling yourself that you're so much more powerful than you give yourself credit for Call to Action: Things to write down and do What's most important to let go of and why? What has this thing cost you?  What has it prevented you from doing?  What do you want to let go of and move on from? Remember: Reasons come before results | Purpose fuels Persistence Step 4: Mapping What's Next in Your Future Just like step one you took a lot at the things you're most proud of. In this step, you're going to revisit some of those ideas and identify how they fit into your future. Remember to write down why they are important and why!! Examples to think of: Health/Well-being Finance Future Relationships Giving- what you have to offer How do you want to feel about the future: What's motivating you What do you seek freedom from? Are you willing to be flexible? Be consistent and specific as possible. Let yourself dream and don't underestimate what you can dream.  Call to Action: Make a list Write down your top 3 goals for the next year Who do you need to become to accomplish these goals? Who character do you need to change into or play to achieve these things? Is there an alter ego involved? Step 4: What do you want your future self to know?  Write a letter to the version of you in 2022! Be imaginative and creative! Some writing promotes are: I would love you to know that…. Have Grace With Yourself Through Life's Ups and Downs The valleys in life allow us to see the beauty of the mountain tops   Moving has been the focus of my every moment this past 3-4 weeks and it has been exhausting. I have pushed myself to the max to get things unpacked and to make our new house look like a home. I have rubbed my residual limb raw, created some serious pains that have taken my breathe away, and made my "good leg" ache with all the work it has done to compensate for the lack of not having another limb. With all the craziness of life I have ignored the fit of my socket, until now. I am finally getting fit for a new socket and am excited with the idea of a closer fit, but anxious with having to cope with a new fit that will inevitably cause pains as I adapt to it. With the good comes the bad. With the highs come the lows, and life is a journey. We must always remember that life isn't a sprint but a marathon. I need to remember that. I can get impatient at times, and frustrated by the problems and set backs I encounter on a day to day/week to week basis. I need to remember to stop and smell the roses( or in my case, today, sunflowers), and enjoy the journey. Today was one of those days when everything just came to a head for me, emotionally, and I got so angry and frustrated. You know, the kind of emotion that makes you want to give up and take a nap.... or stress eat! I'm proud of myself, I did neither! Instead I went through with recording my podcast. Take a listen to hear what happened today that put me in a tail spin. As I spoke to you all about it, I realized that I am truly blessed with my life and that "this too, shall pass".  I must learn to have grace with the world, the people around me, and myself.  I believe we have these moments to remind ourselves of all the good that is in our life. Without the valleys how can we appreciate the mountain tops? I sometimes forget how good my life is and how blessed I am. I need to remind myself to be grateful, even through the problems. I hope you can see how blessed you are with who and what you have in your life, even when things aren't so perfect. If we can just see the positives we can eliminate stressors that can harm our health.  Our attitude and outlook on our life can create a healthy life or make us sick.  Being unhappy, grouchy, and angry can really harm our health and  destroy our recovery from sickness or surgery. Try positivity. You might be surprised on how great you'll start feeling AND you'll also see the world change, for the better, all around you, all because of how you carry yourself. I don't see myself as disabled or handicapped. I like to smile at people who look at me, staring at my leg. When I smile and they smile back then I know they see me for ME, then a chain  reaction occurs, of happy vibes.... at least in my life and at my house.  Try it!! The world needs more positive vibes- why not be the person who starts it? Be the change!     Today's Call to Action: Write down 5 things that you are grateful for. Maybe it's people in your life, or your pet. Maybe its the health you DO enjoy, or a memory. Maybe it's simply that cup of coffee with a friend or that moment you had to watch the sunset. Just be thankful! Then post your list somewhere that you can see it everyday. Maybe on your mirror in your bathroom, or next to your bed at night. Better yet, can you write 5 things for which you are grateful for 7 days in a row? Send me a message and tell me what you are grateful for. Our gratefulness is contagious! I am grateful for each of you!! Thank you for reading, listening, and following my journey!   And as always: Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!!!   A little bit of sunshine to make me smile   Much love and admiration, Angie

Episode 22: No Great Leader Is An Island “Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It’s about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others’ success, and then standing back and letting them shine.” Chris Hadfield, astronaut and former Commander of the International Space Station   1. Great Leaders Promote the Dream “All successful people - men and women - are big dreamers.” - Brian Tracy  QUESTION: Do you understand your own goals and dreams? Have you written them down?   It is important to keep the short-term goals and long-term goals in perspective. You can be a good leader without being a dreamer. However, if you want to be a great leader, you have to be a dreamer.    Become a storyteller: What is your compelling purpose that you need others to know and understand?   2. Great Leaders Promote the Team Leaders are only as good as the people on their team.  If you want to be a good leader, and eventually a great leader, you have to shift your focus to not just the team, but “effective teamwork.”  Focusing on this kind of teamwork fosters two things: Higher productivity Loyalty among people on your team Teams that work well together will always produce better work and results.   QUESTION: Do you communicate collaboration among your team? Communication is a key component, and a top priority, of a leader who was building a strong team. You must foster and promote a “sixth sense” among your team members. Teams that work well together develop a strong sense of accountability.   QUESTION: Do the people on your team understand what they are supposed to be contributing to the rest of the team?   MO’s Final Thoughts: You have to focus on both the dream and the team.   Question: Which one are you needing to work on more? Action: Write it down. Journal. Make the change today. In music, there are two kinds of feedback - Good and Bad. Bad feedback is that high pitched squeal you hear when a microphone gets too close to a speaker. Good feedback is the kind where you control (think of the opening guitar note in the song "I Feel Fine" by the Beatles). A feedback loop is the part of a system in which some portion (or all) of the system's output is used as input for future operations. In marketing, we need to create feedback loops to help us find the right messages that resonate with our perfect audiences. There are four parts to a marketing feedback loop: Action - Write or Create Something Evidence - Engagement Relevance - Measure Response Consequence - Change or Update Something In this episode, we will discuss how you can use feedback loops to find the right messages that will resonate with your perfect audience. You can create a great feedback loop by asking the right questions, gathering the responses, dig deeper, and take action!

Hi everyone. For anyone that wants to know how the colour called Banana looks like. This is the interview giving the answer. For this episode I got to interview Andrew Newman, Author and Founder of Conscious Bed Time Stories and healer. Andrew is known for: Writing Poems and books Being a healer, and For his work in mens groups His creative powers are writing and wood working but has not considered himself being creative until his late 20is. The books are designed to help parents and children to change gears and connect before going to sleep. To do so psychology and energy healing approaches are used. “These stories have wise, lovable characters who model real-life situations to your children, showing them how to resolve challenges before they arise. They also have easy breathing meditations and activity pages that help parents and children connect. “ So far he has published 13 Children Books and another 3 books are on the way. Born and raised into a Jewellery Family, in South Africa during the apartheid period. Andrew had his share of laking emotional training, hugs and love from his family and going in a men's only school did not help him perfecting his emotions and interaction with others. In his mid 20is he realised that there is more and started searching for healing himself. Books, weekend courses and even a university degree as healer from the Barbara Brennan School of Healing in the US were some of the things he did. Andrew has been open and vulnerable in his storytelling and lets us in how he then got to write poems and started publishing them. We do not only learn about his path but also about how we can connect with each other using the snuggle-breath. An Advice took and recommends: - From Mike Dooley the author of “Notes from the universe”. If you don't know what to do, do the three least shitty things. You never know what door might open. For Andrew this was to move from Tennessee to California. On the road the Mindvalley Quest “Little Humans” was published and before he knew it he had a mail box full of emails and requests. Such as from “The Oliver Schirach Show”. Stay open. Call for Action: Write a poem and share it with someone or gift it. If you feel strong and courageous read it aloud to someone else. Ask for understanding. Inform that this poem is new and very precious to you. So that you won't be criticised for it. As sales professionals, it can be difficult to describe complex and sophisticated products to sophisticated buyers, unsophisticated buyers, and buyers that know less than they think they know. You need to appear credible and resist the urge to try and impress the buyer with complicated words and expressions. Using the right language shows competence and shows that you have insights into the client’s problem. However, using the wrong type of language can cost you the sale, so you need to know how to translate your sales pitch at the right level. In today’s lunchbreak training, I share how to translate your sales pitch into plain speak to promote echo selling. I share why it is vital to learn different ways to say your elevator pitch for clients with varying levels of understanding. I explain why you should be ready with level setting questions and how to find a way to make the person comfortable while you explain sophisticated language and solutions. Introduction Master the mindset of wealth Are you ready to uncover what's holding you back from making money? Jen Sincere teaches us how to give your doubts, fears, and excuses the heave-ho. You will relate to money in a new lucrative way. Are you ready to master the mindset of wealth? The money you desire is here for you. The opportunities , the clients, the teachers, the brilliant moneymaking ideas, they're all right here, right now, waiting for you to wake up, let them in, and get this party started. Allow Rich can be defined as the ability to afford all the things and experiences required to fully experience your most authentic life. The amount of money you need depends on who you are and what you desire. Do you sometime worry that you are greedy because you desire more money? A healthy desire for wealth is not greed, it's a desire for life. We are designed to fully flourish, we all have seeds of unthinkable badassery inside of us, yet only some of us will allow ourselves to grow. There is no such thing as too much awesome. Take a deep breath, trust your desires, and embrace the fact that your quest for riches is a request to be more of who you truly are. ALLOW yourself to be the biggest badass you can be, what ever that is for you. ACTION: Make a list of some of the beautiful things and experiences that money will add to your life. Make a list of how you being rich will benefit others. I am grateful to money because.... What's holding you back? Our realities are make believe- whatever we make ourselves believe, we experience. 1. Subconscious beliefs about money 2. Comfort zone 3. fear 4. How we talk about money. 5. Thoughts of scarcity. Action: List five things you remember our parents telling you about money. Rewrite your new truths about money. Write down new truth every morning or night. New Money Mindset See money as a form of exchange. See money as a currency and currency is energy. Start looking for evidence you are a money/wealth magnet. Action: Write down five positive words to describe money. Say thank you every time you receive money. Say to yourself "See money loves me." Feel gratitude and joy when money enters your life. Figure out something you can do right now that will take you a giant step towards your goal of getting rich. NO FEAR. Challenge your limiting beliefs. Action: Watch for your excuses, fear and crush them with taking action now. Come up with 1 super exciting reason you want to make money and visualize it. Write a letter to money. Your heart is on a mission. Fear, doubts, and other people's rules are no match to your mission. Passion trumps fear and excuses. Don't take no for an answer. Also align with your truest you. Add the word AND when making goals. Have a big fancy career AND be a great mom. Action: Get really specific, like an order. Specifics create emotion and emotion gives us determination. Write a fantasy "Day in the life" What would a day look like in the life of the richest, happiest, and most successful you? After that, write down the 5 strong emotions you feel when you read it. Then write sentences that evoke those feelings. "It's so exciting working with clients that are smart and appreciate me. It makes me feel really excited to learn everyday and I am so grateful that my invented career that helps others be successful affords me the opportunity to travel regularly, go see fun live events like basketball games and cirque du sole in good seats, and live part time in the warmth with my soul mate and that I can walk my dogs and do yoga everyday. Set Intention, Faith and Gratitude. If it is on your mind, it will soon be in your lap. We all have the choice to think what we want to think, and take responsibility for the fact that our thoughts create our financial realities. A good way to keep you mind on what you desire is to think about what your Whys are for getter rich. Think of three reasons these whys are stronger than your fears. 3:55 - Progress happens on purpose 15:10 - The Forbes Billionaires List 22:24 - Issues with the Market 33:05 - Alimony Laws are Changing   Progress Happens on Purpose The opposite of progress happens without purpose. When you don't have a purpose you're not only going to stay still, you're actually going to go backward. Just like in a pinball machine, that ball just falls wherever it may and bounces off of whatever comes along. You have to ask yourself, do you want to progress in life? Are there specific areas in your life where you want to make some progress? Maybe with your family, your marriage, or with your kids. It's important for you to know there's a definite purpose in your life, something that's bigger than you. When you grab hold of that, you'll find you will begin to make progress towards that purpose.   There are two ways to do nothing. Do nothing. That's the most basic way that is obvious to most of us. Try to do everything. This is the method that sneaks up on us. It's veiled in an attempt to make massive progress but we end up making none. Action: Write down just 1 or 2 things you want to improve in your life right now. Don't overload the list with everything you want to accomplish in your life, just the one thing you can focus on right now. Be specific about the actions you can take to make progress in those areas. That way you can measure your progress. Place of Home - https://www.placeofhope.com/ If you're looking to make a difference in the lives of those who can't fight for themselves, please consider supporting Place of Hope who is rescuing abused and neglected children.   The Forbes List of Billionaires Jeff Bezos - Amazon - $112 B Bill Gates - Microsoft - $90 B Warren Buffett - Berkshire Hathaway - $84 B Bernard Arnault - LVMH - $72 B Mark Zuckerberg - Facebook - $71 B There are now 2,200 billionaires in the world now and 67% of the billionaires on the list are self-made. These are people who did not inherit their wealth. These are people who have created something of value on their own. That's a very encouraging thing for all of us. Those of us who approach life from an entrepreneurial mindset will be the next ones who are going to show up on this list of billionaires. Challenge: What entrepreneurial idea do you have that you can go after? Go for it! 67% of the billionaires on this list did exactly that.   Market Update The big question is whether we're going to see the markets continue to go up in spite of the recent trend downward. We've been in a sustained Bull-run for about 9 years. We know this isn't going to continue forever. One of the challenges the market has today is the political risk it faces 24 hours per day. The news is non-stop and never been more overwhelming in our lives. Because of this, we're in a place where we're going to most likely see the markets start to turn. Remember, in 2009, we started to see something called “Quantitative Easing” which basically was the Federal Reserve printing money to buy Treasury Bonds from the government, which put money into our financial structure. That's what boosted the markets until late 2014. So what should you do with your investments? It's important to now talk with your advisor about specific changes you can make to your portfolio in light of this speculation on the market shifting. It's critical you look at the amount of risk you have in your investments right now because this downturn could be bigger than what we saw in 2008. Now is the time to lock in your gains while the market is high.   Alimony Laws Will Be Changing Starting on January 1st 2019, alimony payments will no longer be tax deductible. It's going to cost a lot more to get divorced starting in January. My suggestion is that couples who are facing marital challenges should look at the financial cost a divorce is going to have and invest that money into quality marital counseling. Challenge: Keep that money that would go to taxes and spend it on counseling. Resource: The Intentional Family on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheIntentionalFamily.net/

The holidays are the time of year we’re all meant to slow down and recognize all the things in our lives that we are grateful for, but unfortunately with the crazy speed that life moves nowadays, the holiday season is most likely the most stressful time of the year. All most people (including myself) are often focused on is rushing to get projects done before the year ends, making travel plans, fighting the mad rush of holiday shoppers and traffic, and if there’s any spare time left in the day...maybe getting some sleep. Where in the world is there any time to slow down and be grateful? My guest today is Humberto Gurmilan, an Emmy award-winning producer, author, speaker, podcaster, and all-around inspiring guy. He is the founder of the Gurmilan Foundation which empowers individuals with disabilities in challenged communities, and until recently he was the sports anchor for Telemundo in San Diego where he also teaches communications at San Diego City College. But despite his many accomplishments, I didn’t invite Humberto on the show with me to discuss how he became successful. In this interview Humberto and I talk about the tragedy he experienced as a teenager when due to a freak surfing accident he became paralyzed from the chest down. Rather than thinking about what was taken away from him, instead Humberto decided to rise to the challenge and instead develop gratitude in the face of adversity and use his experience to inspire others to do the same. For those listening today who are frustrated with your present circumstances, I hope this interview allows you to reframe where you are in your life right now and take even a few minutes to be grateful for what you do have before embarking upon the madness of the holiday season. Is Porn Really a Public Health Crisis?

Sexploitation

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2016

This is episode #2 of the Sexploitation podcast, I’m here today with Dawn Hawkins from NCOSE, and today we’re talking about the question “Is Porn Really a Public Health Crisis?” This question has been everywhere lately. Utah passed a formal state resolution declaring pornography a public health crisis in the summer of 2016, then that fall the RNC added the same language to its official republican platform, and presidential nominee at the time of this recording wrote a letter to the organization Enough is Enough stating that she is supportive of protecting children against the harms of pornography. All of this has happened within the last year! Heck, Time magazine had a cover story on the harms of pornography to men. This sudden burst of discussion on this topic has a lot of people scratching their heads and wondering “where this came from.”   Dawn Hawkins shares with us that this problem has grabbed the public's attention because of the number of people who've been harmed by pornography and who are now speaking up, and also the rising amount of research.  What is a public health crisis? There is no commonly agreed upon definition. The World Health Organization vaguely defines a crisis as a “situation that is perceived as difficult” and in 2012 the CDC said a crisis tends to occur when “an unexpected and threatening event requires an immediate response.” I think we can raise the bar even higher and say “A serious, harmful, problem that affects individuals or groups beyond their capacity alone to correct.” Pornography is definitely pervasive. Families can't protect themselves, even kids as young as 10 years old are being exposed to pornography and then begin using it.   Porn has serious harms to a range of categories: Childhood sexual development The brain Sexual dysfunctions like ED Increased risk of STDs Sexual violence, and more.  Dawn discussed how she believes porn today will follow the trend of the tobacco industry in public perception. Pornography is pervasive and popular, similar to smoking in the 1950s, but as the harms become apparent, both the general public and elected officials will demand that a multidisciplinary public health approach be implemented across the country to address it. Call to Action: Write your representative and ask them to address this public health crisis: http://pornharmsaction.com/pornharms/app/write-a-letter?6&engagementId=100413
