The Romantics, a band synonymous with the vibrant energy of American rock and the catchy hooks of '80s new wave, havea story deeply rooted in the musical landscape of Detroit. At the heart of this narrative is Mike Skill, the band's founding lead guitarist and a principal songwriter, whose journey before and during his time with The Romantics showcases a blend of influences, adaptability, and a passion for music thatcontinues to resonate with audiences today. Mike Skill grew up on the east side of Detroit, a city pulsating with musical innovation. The '60s brought the British Invasion, with bands like The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, The Hollies, and The Rolling Stones capturing the imagination of young musicians worldwide. Skill was no exception; he found himself captivated by the raw energy and melodic sensibilities of these British acts. This fascination wasn't just about the music—it was about the attitude, the style, and the revolutionary spirit that these bands embodied. But Detroit had its own musical heartbeat. The city was a melting pot of sounds, from the soulful rhythms of Motown to the gritty garage rock of local bands. Influences like the MC5, the Stooges, and early Bob Seger were instrumental in shaping Skill's musical outlook. He absorbed the sincerity, irony, spontaneity, and volume that characterised Detroit's late '60s rock scene, blending it with the melodic hooks of theBritish bands he admired. By the mid-70s, Skill was ready to channel his influences into something original. In 1977, he joined forces with Wally Palmar, Rich Cole, and Jimmy Marinos to form The Romantics—a name befitting their debut on the day of love. Their mission was clear: to create music that was fresh yet familiar, blending the infectious energy of British pop with the raw power ofAmerican rock. Detroit's music scene was both a challenge and aninspiration. The city was teeming with talent, and standing out required not just skill but also a unique identity. The Romantics distinguished themselves with their short hair, tailored suits, and high-energy performances. They favoured concise, punchy songs that got straight to the point—a reflection of both their punk influences and the pop sensibilities of the British Invasion. The Romantics' relentless gigging paid off and they recorded their self-titled debut album with British producer Pete Solley. Released in 1980, this album marked the dawn of a new decade and introduced the world to "What I Like About You." With its infectious beat and catchy chorus, the song became a defining track of the era. As the musical landscape shifted in the early '80s, the emergence of new wave brought synthesizers, polished production, and a more commercial sound to the forefront. The Romantics, rooted in garage rock and power pop, faced the challenge of evolving without losing their identity. Mike Skill's left the band after the 1980 release of "National Breakout." The lineup change coincided with the band's subtle incorporation of new wave elements into their music. Their 83 album, "In Heat," showcased this evolution, with tracks like "Talking in Your Sleep" blending their signature rock energy with the melodic hooks and production sheen characteristic of new wave. The song became one of their biggest hits. Despite lineup changes and the ebb and flow ofmusical trends, The Romantics have remained a constant presence in the rock scene. Mike Skill's return to the band in 2010 revitalised their live performances. The story of The Romantics, with Mike Skill's journey at its core, is the embodiment of the timeless spirit of rock music—a blend of passion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the craft. Mike joins us today to share his story,#theromantics #musichistory #newwavemusic #80smusic

Many folks know that the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd came out of Jacksonville, Florida. But they weren't the only big southern rock band to arise from that city. Molly Hatchet was another southern rock band from Jacksonville, also sporting three guitars. The band formed in 1971 and shares a lot of the inspiration and influence of Skynyrd. their best selling album was their second one, Flirtin' with Disaster, which peaked at number 19 and became a 2x platinum seller in the United States. The name of the band comes from the legend of a Salem-era prostitute who supposedly mutilated and decapitated her clients. The band was not only famous for its music, but for its album cover art. Fantasy artist Frank Frazetta created the cover, depicting a Viking-like warrior with a winged helmet and battle axe. Personnel for Flirtin' with Disaster included Danny Joe Brown on vocals, guitarists Dave Hlubek, Steve Holland, and Duane Roland, Banner Thomas on bass, and Bruce Crump on drums. While Flirtin' with Disaster is the band's most successful album, they also found considerable success with the eponymous debut album released prior to Flirtin' and the third album, “Beatin' the Odds,” released with new front man Jimmy Farrar who replaced Danny Joe Brown who left for a number of reasons including diabetes. The band would not achieve similar success with its future albums, though Brown would return to the band by their fifth album. Molly Hatchet remained a popular touring band, though today all the original members have died. Friend of the show Craig Dale joins us as Wayne brings us this Southern rock classic for the podcast. Let the Good Times RollWhile this may be considered a deeper cut, the track which closes out the album did receive significant airplay on rock stations when the album came out. “Give me wine, women, whiskey and rock 'n' roll and let me sleep my days away.” Flirtin' with DisasterThis is the timeless classic from the album, the title track, and the opening song for side two. Although this is considered their breakout hit and highest charting, it only went to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been used in a number of films and television shows including Suspect Zero, Straw Dogs, My Name is Earl, and King of the Hill.Good Rockin'This deep cut is one in which all band members share writing credits. It was not released as a single but did appear as a B-side to their second single, “It's All Over Now.” It is simply a straightforward rock party song - “So if you're feeling good, if you feel alright we're going to have a rock 'n' roll time tonight.”Whiskey ManThe leading track from the album is a well-known Molly Hatchet song, though it failed to chart. It is an anti-drinking song in which the lyrics discuss the hazards of alcohol. “You start to get straight, then you get weak, can't you see you're on a losing streak?” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Coal Miner's Daughter by Loretta Lynn (from the motion picture “Coal Miner's Daughter”)Sissy Spacek won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in this biographical drama. STAFF PICKS:Back On My Feet Again by The BabysBruce brings us the number 33 hit by John Waite and the Babys - their fourth and final top 40 hit. This is off their album “Union Jacks.” They opened for Journey on tour, and their keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, would wind up joining Journey when the Babys broke up. What I Like About You by The RomanticsRob presents a party song that got a lot of airplay with a 50's/60's feel. It was written in 1979 and it came out on the debut album from the Romantics. The lead singer, Wally Palmar, is the drummer for the group. The song only made it to number 49 on the US charts, but its garage band feel and party credentials have given it a timeless quality that fares better the longer it is around.Magic by Olivia Newton JohnLynch tests Wayne's patience with this number 1 hit from Australia's own Olivia Newton John. It was recorded for the soundtrack to the 1980 musical fantasy film “Xanadu” and was released as its lead single. The song was written by John Farrar who wrote a number of Olivia Newton John's hits.Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink FloydFriend of the show Craig Dale brings us a haunting tune from the Pink Floyd album “The Wall.” This track reveals how the horror of war and the blitz formed a brink in the wall of isolation the protagonist forms in his descent into madness. The child speaking at the front of the song is actually band member Roger Waters' son, Harry.Rockin' Heaven Down by HeartWayne closes out this week's podcast with his favorite Heart song from the album “Bebe Le Strange.” The track features Nancy Wilson starting the song on a 12-string electric guitar, and Nancy Wilson's fierce vocals. “Hoot into the night, that look from eye to eye, a flash gets passed around, a band of wild angels rockin' heaven down.”

Fue la nueva ola en Estados Unidos, de costa a costa. De Detroit, Boston o Nueva York a San Francisco o Los Ángeles. De The Cars o The Romantics a Greg Kihn o The Tazmanian Devils. The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Mike Skill. The Detroit native and celebrated rock guitarist has been a working musician for more than four decades. His roots lay in 60's Motown, Traditional-Garage Blues, and the New Wave Punk movement, spending his early days in New York City with one of his first bands playing clubs, such as the historic CBGB's. Best known as a founding member, guitarist, and principal songwriter for The Romantics, Skill co-wrote the band's chart-topper “What I Like About You”. He also created the heart-thumping bass groove and co-wrote the global #1 hit “Talking in Your Sleep.” The Romantics were part of the early days of MTV with energetic videos featuring their infectious new wave pop hooks. In 2011, The Romantics were inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame. Today, Skill continues to write and record in Detroit at Pearl Sound Studios with producer Chuck Alkazian and from his current home in Oregon in addition to performing around the world. He has a new solo album called 'Skill... Mike Skill'. They chat about his influences, the formation of The Romantics, his solo career and much more! Visit mikeskill.com for further details.
Straight out of Detroit Rock City, The Romantics made their first entry into the Billboard chart with a high-energy tune sung by their drummer. That song, “What I Like About You,” later became the subject of a high-profile lawsuit when it was used in a TV commercial…which made the band even more popular than when the song first was released in 1980. Get into the story of this great Motor City band in the new episode of the Behind The Song podcast. I think we can all hear the theme song to Jaws anytime we think of the film and it also brings a bit of fear when its heard. Jaws is on the AFI Top 100 Films of all time and rightfully so, it is still holding up after almost 50 years later. It was directed by Steven Spielberg based on a novel by Peter Benchley, who co-wrote the screenplay with Carl Gottlieb. Listen to this weeks episode as Edward Kerr and I discuss this classic film. You might remember Edward from his role as Pastor Ted on Pretty Little Liars (he was honestly one of my favorite reoccurring characters on the show and I wish he had been in more episodes) or at Rick on What I Like About You or even as Lt. James Brody on SeaQuest 2032, or anyone of his numerous roles listed on IMDb from House or Lucifer. Also, I can't believe he played the love interest of Mary Louise Parker, she is such an amazing actress. He is fun to chat with and a super friendly guy, very down to earth, and next time Ed is on, I promise to drink as well. Shark Attack Margarita (breadboozebacon.com): Ingredients 1 1/4 ounce silver tequila 3/4 ounce Cointreau orange liqueur 3/4 ounce blue curaçao liqueur 4 to 6 ounces sweet and sour mix 1 lime wedge for rimming the glass Margarita salt for rimming the glass Grenadine Crushed ice Directions Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the tequila, Cointreau, blue curaçao, and sweet and sour. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Place margarita salt on a small plate in a thick layer. Cut a slit in the center of the lime wedge and then place it on the rim of your glass. Run the lime wedge around the entire glass to get the rim wet. Remove the lime wedge and dip the rim into the margarita salt. Fill the glass with ice, being careful not to knock the salt off the rim. Remove the lid of the shaker, and strain the margarita into the glass. Place one test tube inside one shark until it is all the way in. The test tube will stick out a little bit. Fill the test tube with grenadine until you can just see the grenadine above the shark's mouth. When you're ready to serve, quickly turn the shark over into the margarita and plunge the test tube (and shark's head) into the margarita so the grenadine slowly bleeds out into the cocktail. Jaws Drinking Game (reeldrinkinggames.com): Drink Every Time: "Chief" is said The theme song plays The fin is shown The Kitner Boy is referenced Someone fires a gun Someone is attacked by a shark You see blood Finish Your Drink: "Were going to need a bigger boat" "Smile you son-of-a" Pro Rule: Drink every time it cuts to a shot underwater As always, drink responsibly and with others. He later developed a rap persona, Dirt Nasty, and had several solo albums and co-founded the supergroup Three Loco. Christopher and his work have been featured just about everywhere, including: MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, The Times of London, Playboy, The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, The Atlantic, Outside, El Pais, La Vanguardia, Salon, Seed, and Big Think. A featured speaker from TED in Long Beach, CA to The Festival of Dangerous Ideas at the Sydney Opera House to the Einstein Forum in Pottsdam, Germany, Chris has consulted at various hospitals in Spain, provided expert testimony in a Canadian constitutional hearing, and appeared in well over a dozen documentary films. Even before co-authoring the New York Times best-seller, Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What it Means for Modern Relationships (translated into 15 languages), with his partner-in-crime (and wife), Cacilda Jethá, MD, Chris was on a wild ride. After receiving a BA in English and American literature in 1984 he spent the next two decades traveling around the world, pausing in unexpected places to work at decidedly odd jobs (e.g., gutting salmon in Alaska, teaching English to prostitutes in Bangkok and self-defense to land-reform activists in Mexico, managing commercial real-estate in New York's Diamond District, helping Spanish physicians publish their research). In his mid-30s, Chris decided to pursue doctoral studies in Psychology. Drawing upon his multi-cultural experience, Chris' research focused on distinguishing the human from the cultural, first by focusing on shamanism and ethnobotony—studying how various societies interact with altered states of consciousness and the sacred plants that provoke them—and later, by looking at similarly diverse cultural perspectives on sexuality. His doctoral dissertation was a multi-disciplinary investigation of prehistoric human sexual behavior, guided by the world-renowned psychologist, Stanley Krippner, at Saybrook Graduate School, in San Francisco, CA. Chris is finishing a new book for Simon and Schuster tentatively called Civilized to Death: Why Everything's Amazing but Nobody's Happy, due out in 2017—and he puts out a weekly podcast, called Tangentially Speaking, featuring conversations with interesting people, ranging from famous comics to bank robbers to drug smugglers to porn stars to authors to plasma physicists.
