On this episode of the Xian Archive Podcast, Matt is joined by music producer, drummer & DJ Zach Morillo. As the artist ‘ MORiLLO ', Zach has released three albums, three ep's, and a multitude of singles and remixes on established labels such as Gravitas Recordings, Muti Music, High Vibe Records, Tribal Trap, Hybrid Trap, Simplify, and Play Me Records. As he continues to build his project, Zach's music has been celebrated by music lovers and DJ's on stages and at festivals around the world. During the conversation the two discuss Zach's musical path, his experiences with festivals, psychedelics and synchronicity. They also discuss ecstatic dance, musical gear, DAWS and mindset for creating, plus more. At the young age of 7, Zach's journey in music began when he became close friends with his next-door neighbors, the children of the late legendary drummer, Jeff Porcaro. Through spending time at Jeff's house in Orlando, Florida, Zach was exposed to the life of a musician and first sat down behind a set of drums. He quickly discovered his natural talent and passion for music and rhythm. Making music has been his life's focus ever since. Zach attended the Music and Performing Arts magnet program at Dr. Phillips High School where he learned to master rudimentary skills, serving as the captain of the drum-line and studying privately with jazz greats, Danny Gottlieb and Joe Morello. His musical education continued at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music where he was awarded scholarship for a Jazz Drums major in the Studio Music and Jazz Bachelors program. During his time at UM, he quickly became one of the most sought after drummers in school and in the greater Miami and South Florida area. He performed regularly with many of the local hip-hop, reggae, and rock bands while working steadily in the corporate top-40 circuit. With a desire to expand his opportunities across the music world, Zach moved to Los Angeles in 2012. He quickly found work as a touring drummer for internationally acclaimed artists RHYE, Childish Gambino, and Groundation and has traveled the world performing at the biggest and best festivals and venues like Coachella, Red Rocks, and The Hollywood Bowl. In addition, he has been creating and developing his own unique sound and identity through music production and djing. Jens Kuross spent his teenage years thrashing his way through Rage Against The Machine and Beastie Boys covers in the dive bars of his native Idaho. By the time he'd reached his mid-twenties, however, he was a Berklee College of Music trained jazz drummer who'd studied under the likes of Victor Mendoza and Ralph Peterson. (And along the way becoming the only artist you're ever likely to meet who can cite Tom Waits and Bill Evans, Brad Wilk and Art Blakey as equal influences without missing a beat).Kuross found himself touring the world as the drummer for alternative artist RY X, club-smashing electronic duo Howling, and The Acid, a supergroup comprised of DJ/Producer Adam Freeland, Californian polymath Steve Nalepa, and RY X.Over the course of the next two years, Kuross received radio support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2, Absolute Radio, and Radio X. He was invited to support GRAMMY-nominated electronic producer Bonobo, Polaris-nominated R&B artist Rhye, and Mercury-nominated alt-classical trio GoGo Penguin on their respective European tours. His songs, recorded in the garage of his Los Angeles home, were synced to Fox's Lucifer, NBC's Sharp Objects and most recently Netflix's 13 Reasons Why. He recorded a Mahogany session, signed with United Talent Agency, and his music amassed millions of streams. His long-awaited debut album, The Man Nobody Can Touch, is a body of work that's equal parts introspective and grandiose; a record that's unexpectedly maximalist and yet innately melancholy; and yet an album that manages to avoid all the traps of self-indulgent mellow- drama and tired, Americana sentimentality.Jens IGJens Kuross on Spotify Check out the new platform JourneySpace.com - offering online live facilitated journeys. Appreciation backward. Sometimes there are moments, experiences, and places in our lives that were pivotal in shaping who we become many years later. For me, one of those places was the University of Miami, and the lessons learned ...priceless. For this episode of Intentionally Overheard, I decided to go back to school and talk with Steve Rucker- my former college music professor at the University of Miami (34 years ago). We had a wonderful conversation about our respective journeys, life lessons, music, and living a fearless life with purpose. Here's a bit of background on Steve: Steve Rucker has had extensive performing and teaching experience over the last forty years. Originally from North Carolina, Mr. Rucker attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, and holds an Undergraduate Degree in Studio Music and Jazz and a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He has twice been voted “Best Jazz Performer” and “Most Versatile Artist” in South Florida polls. Since 1979, Mr. Rucker has been the Director of the Drumset Program at the University of Miami, where he has created many unique and creative programs. His Drumset Improvisation class is one of the most unique programs in the country. He directs the Funk/Fusion Ensemble, which has Downbeat Student Awards almost every year since 2001. In previous years has created Tower of Power Ensemble and Weather Report Ensembles. Mr. Rucker was a member of the Bee Gees band for over twelve years, and appeared with them on the Tonight Show, Oprah Winfrey, The Today Show, VH 1 Specials, David Letterman, Rosie O'Donnell, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and at a Command Performance for the Queen of England. In 1997, he appeared at a Bee Gees concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas which was shown on pay-per-view television, HBO, and was mastered as a live album. His latest book, Exercises in African-American Funk, a collaboration with former student Jonathan Joseph, has created quite a buzz in the drum world.

Greg Byers is a jazz cellist, a top-notch performer, a fantastic composer, an amazing singer, and a highly sought teacher. He begin cello at a very young age through the Suzuki method. By age sixteen, he was a talented cellist, but was frustrated with the lack of personal expression he found in youth orchestras. This led Greg to explore the possibilities of the cello in a jazz context. As a music major at University of Miami he was initially denied admission to the Studio Music & Jazz program because he was a cellist. He persevered and eventually became the first person to double major in Instrumental Performance/Studio Music & Jazz on cello and bass. As a performer, Greg enjoys balancing technical prowess and improvisation freedom. As a composer, he strives for melodies that reach the layman, and harmonies that challenge the stereotypes of Western popular music. As an educator, Greg is passionate about helping students avoid the pitfalls of traditional music instruction, with the student truncated from any sort of creativity or expression. Rather, Greg works to bring out the creative potential residing in every student by integrating improvisation, theory, and ear training into his pedagogy. Greg plays an NS Design CR electric cello. Tim Calhoun is a professional guitarist in the Nashville area and is also an adjunct professor at Trevecca Nazarene University. Born and raised in PA, where Tim started to play guitar at 13. By the time he turned 16, his impressive focus on developing his craft as a guitar player secured his position as guitarist for the Jack Windows band. This band was the tri-states busiest show band playing the Sheraton/Hilton hotel circuits. After High School, Tim left his home state of PA to attend the University of Miami majoring in Studio Music and Jazz. Toward the end of his sophomore year he had gained enough skill to allow his professors and upperclassmen to recommend him for work outside the university. After this foundational development Tim spent the next 25+ years as both a performing guitarist and session musician in both NY City and then Nashville. Tim has shared the stage with and/or recorded with CMA, ACM, GMA and Grammy nominated/winning artist such as Jo Dee Messina, Trisha Yearwood, Kathy Trocolli, Mylon Lefevre, Ronnie McDowell, Bo Didley, The Temptations, Phil Keggy, Jon Secada, Jo-El Sonnier and many others. His guitar work has been featured on TV commercials for Coke, Kroger, Macy’s and Six Flags to name a few. Also, his productions were used for the TV show One Tree Hill and the movie Drive me Crazy (from a record he produced by the Electric Farm). Tim has been married to his High School sweetheart for 30 years. Together they raise their two wonderful boys and attend their home church Grace Chapel in Leipers Fork, TN where Tim also serves on the worship team.

Playing his first PAYING gig at age 13, Jeffrey is a lifer. Jeffrey picked up the guitar at the tender age of 8, spending his formative years gigging in bands “anywhere and everywhere” (school dances, frat parties, night clubs, etc). After graduating high school, Jeffrey was accepted into the prestigious "Studio Music and Jazz" program at the University of Miami. Ultimately chasing his dream North, Jeffrey Lee relocated to New York City and quickly established himself as one of the city's top musicians. His performance experiences range from iconic intimate venues such as CBGB, The Bottom Line, The Bitter End, MTV and NBC's Saturday Night Live . . . to huge concert stages including NYC's Madison Square Garden, London's Wembley Stadium, and Japan's Tokyo Dome. Jeffrey Lee strummed his way around the world on Sting's "Nothing Like the Sun" World Tour ("blazing guitar work" - Rolling Stone, "soaring guitar" - USA Today), proudly sharing the stage with musical heavyweights Branford Marsalis, Mino Cinelu, and Kenny Kirkland in twenty-five countriesacross six different continents. In addition to Sting's World Tour, Jeffrey Lee was also a part of Amnesty International's "Human Rights Now!" World Tour (featuring Sting, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'Dour). Playing 20 concerts worldwide (including extraordinary shows in Africa and India), the Amnesty tour was truly a once in a lifetime experience. One of Jeffrey's top Amnesty highlights was sitting in with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Bandat the tour's concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back at home in NYC, Jeffrey Lee had the extreme pleasure of playing guitar with Aretha Franklin (for "VH-1 Divas Live" - an all-star tribute to the Queen of Soul at Radio City Music Hall). The "Divas" concert climaxed with a finale that found Jeffrey jamming with Ms. Franklin, Mary J Blige, Nelly Furtado and surprise special guest Mr. Stevie Wonder. Other performance credits include Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Bublé, Bob James, and singer/songwriter Sam Phillips. As a studio musician, Jeffrey has worked with some of the industry's top producers such as T Bone Burnett, Phil Ramone, Rob Cavallo, and David Foster —as well as legendary engineers Bob Clearmountain and Elliot Scheiner. Jeffrey has recorded at The Record Plant, Hit Factory, Avatar (aka The Power Station), Quad, Unique, Sear . . . and many more. Jeffrey's extensive Broadway credits include Saturday Night Fever, Seussical, Mamma Mia, and School of Rock - the Musical. Most recently, Jeffrey has added "published author" to his list of accomplishments, releasing his "insightful and engaging," coming-of-age memoir "Do Stand So Close: my improbable adventure as Sting's guitarist" (from Deeds Publishing).
