This week on the show we're in the artist's studio visiting the one and only Arthur Jafa. From his extensive work in cinema, to his video art, sculpture, and other mixed media work shown in a contemporary art context – AJ's work is often an embodiment of Black identity in America, and he is often cited with being a leader among a generation of artists creating defining a distinctly Black cinematic language. This extends as well into current projects on the more infrastructural / business side of the film industry in the form of his project Sun Haus. Visiting with AJ and hearing his story was a real treat, and it is one with many twists and turns – in our chat we trace his story all the way from growing up in Tupelo Mississippi in the 60s and 70s to today. and he takes us deeply inside the full kaleidoscope of influences, vibrations, and inspirations that he picked up along the way, and has integrated into his work as an artist and film maker: From gospel music – to James White and the Contortions, and from Oscar Micheaux to 2001 a Space Odyssey. Another unplanned visit from someone everyone knew as Elvis Aaron Presley from Tupelo Mississippi. I must admit I was never a fan until he started showing up in our class. And then I spent the time to listen to his earlier rockabilly tunes, and grew to appreciate what he'd done with his talent. To be clear Jennifer and I don't discuss in advance who we're going to speak to, and Luana Anders our trusted moderator is in charge of who gets on her clipboard and into the class. As noted, a couple of weeks ago it was film producer Carl Laemmle, someone I knew very little about, but had much to say about the journey in the afterlife. In this episode Elvis wanted to talk about process - the process of how we bring a portion of our conscious energy to a lifetime, and that is never lost, or goes away. He references someone Jennifer and I have no idea - a young girl that met him when he crossed over, but he wanted to speak about that process, and how knowing a bit of it in advance "would have helped him." Also the topic of chanting and praying aloud comes into play - for those who are religious, consider this a message from heaven, for those more science oriented consider this a "conversation with one's subconscious about how to heal or cure depression." We've heard it often, that meditation can help heal or cure a person, and meditating on music is also a way to do the same. In this instance, the concept is to "listen to music that elevates your spirit or "heals the heart." To be clear, I asked if this concept was a religious or a science one - and the answer was that it was literally the fact that one can "heal or help one's health by connecting to, dancing to, swaying to, listening to their favorite singer, to connect with the memory of them, to connect with the heart of them, to connect with the healing light of the universe by listening. This isn't a new topic nor is it fantastical.  Set aside the idea of who the conversation is with and focus on the content of the conversation and it becomes clear why it's important to know that life goes on, and that we can connect with loved ones on the flipside.   By the way: the film “Hacking the Afterlife” is available on  Gaia.com Jennifer is at JenniferShaffer.com I'm at RichMartini.com HackingTheAfterlife.com is our podcast MartiniZone.com is our youtube channel This version of “Route 66” is on “Rich Martini on the Rocks” at Amazon or CDbaby.com

Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness

"The next stop along the parkway is in Tupelo Mississippi. It is OLD TOWN OVERLOOK, where there's another marker erected by the Mississippi Daughters of the American Revolution. This one was presented to the City of Tupelo on November 19, 1914. The inscription mentions the Battle of Ackia. This is a partial quotation from that monument. 'Bienville fought the Battle of Ackia with the Chickasaw Indians near this spot May 26, 1736. Of the rage that repulsed him let it be recorded here, they die well who die for faith and home and native land.' "Of course the entire story doesn't end with the Battle of Ackia, but it was the beginning of the end for the French in this region, because after Bienville's defeat at the hands of the Chickasaws, French influence within the region declined rapidly. "This exhibit overlooks the flood plane of OLD TOWN CREEK as the Natchez Trace begins to make its way up into the Northeast hill section of Mississippi, and what are the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. OLD TOWN CREEK is one of the source streams of the Tombigbee River, which was first known as 'THE RIVER OF THE CHICKASAW' "Join us next time when we will visit the TUPELO VISITOR CENTER. This week we are talking about THE outdoor and RV event of the year, and that is Monday's total solar eclipse. We'll tell you why this is so important, why it's perfect for RVers, how to view it safely, how to find a place to watch it and why, even if you have to skip work or school, this is the one event of the year just made to be experienced by RV. Plus, your RV questions, RV news of the week, traveling tech tips and Jennifer will tell you how to once and for all solve the pesky problem of RV light pollution from those inside switches and LED lights. [spp-player] WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK…  We're in Albany, GA…on the road, visiting our son, Scott, and his family for a couple of weeks, and catching our grandson's Jacob and Matthew playing football. We also plan to watch the eclipse down here with them and then maybe head out for some exploring maybe down towards the Emerald Coast after Labor Day. In mid September, it's our Blues and BBQ gathering in Tupelo MS and in late September, we'll be heading to Ashevile NC to the Overland East Expo, a trade show for those go what's called overlanding in extreme, off the grid, 4X4  adventure-type vehicles. We met an interesting RVer this week, a nurse named Tiffany. She's a traveling nurse and apparently, part of a group of traveling medical professionals who journey around the country in an RV, taking on short and long term contract work. Tiffany, her husband and two young preschool children, are in a small RV at a RV park near here. We suspect this is more common that we realized. TIffany is on a 13 week contract with the hospital here in Albany. Last year, Mike met physician, a coronary surgeon, who did the same thing. He's from Orlando and travels throughout Florida and the Gulf States as far as New Orleans in a big new Tiffin Class A motorhome. This portion of the Podcast is brought to you by Campers Inn, the RVer's trusted resource for over 50 years, the nation's largest family-operated RV dealership with 16 locations and growing  JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK It's been an ongoing discussion here on the RV Podcast for the past several months about how to dim or block out all that bright LED light from the electronics and switches in our RVs so we're able to sleep in the dark. Listen up… this tip from and RVer we met named Ken is probably that last idea you'll need on How to finally solve the The Great LED Light issue. This IS the ultimate solution! Once again, the product Ken said is called LED Light Dims and we have built in direct links to them on our special site at kit-dot.com/rvlifestyle. There you will find a master list of every product we talk about on the podcast and the Light Dims are there. Amazon sells two types, one which dims the LED by about 50%, and another kind that dims by 100% - or completely blocking all light. They cost about $8 for a package that will let you cover up just about any offending light in your RV or your home. And be sure to send me your tips and suggestions for the RV lifestyle. You can use the “Leave Voicemail” link at Roadtreking.com. Just click it and then use the built-in microphone on your computer or mobile devise to record a message to me. You can do it over as many times as you want, until you are satisfied. And then you just click a button and it comes right to my email inbox. I love hearing from you! He exploded back onto the scene with his 68 Comeback Special and his career was hitting the high notes once again. After seemingly being exploited by Parker, and building up an expensive entourage and base of operations, Elvis was now locked into another harrowing performance schedule in Vegas and all over the US. Drugs and an extremely unhealthy lifestyle, coupled with pre-existing medical conditions left Elvis in the worst shape of his life.At just 42 years of age, Elvis died in his Graceland home and the world mourned one of the most unique talents to ever walk the earth. Since his death rumours of sightings of Elvis, in real life and in TV and film, are peppered across the internet. Thousands claim to have concrete proof Elvis is alive and will be making another comeback any day now.We take a look at all these aspects of The King of Rock and Roll and try to dispel some of the myths that surround his life. We also discuss the nature of his death and shed some light on some facts that have been overlooked by the collective unconscious. Thanks to Audible for sponsoring our podcast.
