I was very sad to hear of the passing of Bob Jones - Sir Robert Jones. The last contact I had with him was last year when he sent me a copy of his latest book. They always came with a personal note. When I say personal, it was a letter that he would have dictated and had typed up and then signed himself. He was from a different era of sorts. I never received an email from him, only letters. The last time I dealt with him in person was in his office in Wellington overlooking the harbour. That too was from an “era” - beautifully set up, but in a time-and-place kind of way. It was a lot of panelling, a lot of staff, his office was large and on a corner, and he smoked. That became a thing in the Helen Clark days when she was busy making rules around smoking in doors. Bob was having none of it because in his office he was the boss, if not the king. So last time I was in his office we had wine and sat amongst the swirling tobacco smoke coming out of his pipe. The art work was worth the trip alone. He had fantastic taste and a fantastic collection. He also had one of the best brains you will ever encounter. What was often lost by many in the barrage of cantankerous verbiage was the amount of knowledge and wisdom he had gleaned from a lifetime of reading and travel. There wasn't a place he hadn't been. He had more stories than you ever had time to hear, or he had time to tell. I noted a small irony on Friday night when I watched TV1 and their coverage. They made much of the Rod Vaughn helicopter encounter, the irony being no one these days hires a chopper to go looking for a fisherman. And Three reflected the modern malaise as his passing was the second story behind the weather, even though the weather was the day before's news. It showed a lack of understanding of who Jones was and what he contributed to the country. That's the problem with modern newsrooms - the institutional knowledge had left the building. From business, to politics, to public discourse, Jones was an invaluable addition to the national psyche. Unafraid, bold, brilliant with the language and fantastically funny because he was fantastically irreverent, even when irreverence was wildly more tolerated than it is these days. It was a great life. And he was a great man.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
David Seymour's controversial Treaty Principles Bill has faced a fair bit of opposition since its introduction. The ACT Leader says it comes from two main camps, and in his opinion, it reinforces the need for a debate around the Treaty of Waitangi and its application. He told Tim Beveridge that the debate has shifted to the point where it's not about race or the Treaty, but rather about whether New Zealand is a society that gives respect and dignity to each person, or whether it's some “backwards-looking tribal place” where people have to say their race before their ideas are heard. Seymour believes the presentation of the bill by the media is “pretty hopeless”. He says there was one interview on TV1 where they gave more time to the protestors that interrupted his interview, than they did him. “It's pretty difficult not to despair with the standards of media coverage.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
So, one poll tells us something by not really moving and another poll tells us something by being badly misrepresented. The TV1 news numbers last night show that essentially the Government is travelling well, most parties are stable, the Greens are down a bit, but its all, so far, within the margin of error. Nothing really has changed. What that tells you is broadly a couple of things. The first is at this stage of the electoral cycle people don't pay as much attention as they will be in 18 months' time. The second is the Government, with its level of support, is doing basically what they said they would, and most people are happy. The other poll was on race relations. TV1 promoted the fact only 10% think the Government is improving them, but 46% think they are damaging them. What they didn't give the appropriate prominence to was the fact 37% think it's not making any difference. In other words, despite all the noise and hot air being drummed up by radicals and the media, most of us aren't engaged because nothing really is changing. If you take the 37% who see no change and the 10% who see an improvement you have 47%, which is in fact more people thinking things are either neutral or better, as opposed to the 46% who think they are worse. This of course ties into why the Government numbers overall haven't moved and their support remains strong. The so-called drama around Māori policy is not actually politically damaging. You will note the numbers weren't presented that way by the state-run broadcaster. A good question might be: why not? What moves needles is the economy and on that we might be in for an improvement. If we are, what you will then see is the polling numbers most definitely shift in the Government's favour. Māori relations have been tested and testy my entire life. The previous Government bent over backwards for Māori, their beliefs, needs and causes, and look where it got them. The current Government have read things right. Outcomes are what count, whether in race relations or the economy. The numbers broadly show they are on the right side of both. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today Linda speaks to Jesse about My Family Mystery on TV1, The Rise and Fall of Boris Johnson and more thoughts on Jeremy Clarkson's Farm.
It feels like it's been coming forever, and in an odd way, it just might have been. When the news division of Warner Bros. turns out the lights tonight, it's the end of an era. Or, an era. The simple truth is TV3 news never quite cut it and the history of fiscal dysfunction is the major reason why. Some of it was their own doing. Some of it was the unluckiness of who owns you, why they own you and whether they are as invested as they might have been in different circumstances. TV3 never really got off the ground properly. They did a lot of good things. They brought genuine competition to the market, shook up the presentation and reportage of news a bit and discovered some very good personality-based talent. But at no time did they do what really needed to be done. Rate. They never toppled the main player in TV1. They made a dent or two. When they focused on specific demographics they made some big dents. But it never quite crossed the line in terms of the zeitgeist. They never changed the landscape to the point where they were the champions or the kings of the hill. They always remained the plucky little competitor, even years after that moniker became absurd, given they've been around the place for decades. You can only run the "new kid in town" line for so long. Of course it's a credit to TVNZ who held them off. Not that they will be celebrating. The same way Newstalk ZB didn't celebrate when we saw off a series of radio stations set up and designed to take us down or out. Competition is a good thing and as of tonight, although Stuff will to a degree be taking over, it won't be the same. It doesn't have the resource or the level of televisual expertise. We wish them well of course. The landscape, in terms of terrestrial television, is shocking so all are more than welcome to keep the dream alive. But media is a brutal business that became even more brutal with the internet and streaming and the world shrinking. You either get an audience and monetise it, or you don't. It's sad, but emotion never paid the bills. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mika Panzar kertoo viettäneensä nostalgiapainotteisen viime viikonlopun.
Should I have been surprised? The debate around the Press debate has entered day two. If it carries on today that's day three and that's two days too many. Sure, it's news that a Prime Minister gets ill and can't attend a pre-arranged event. But that's about it. There is a certain irony that, having spent the past week deciding broadly that debates are a bit of a waste of time, certain players should be wasting energy and going out of their way to scrap over yet another one. In a sad kind of way it displays just how lost the Labour Party are. Even if you accept Chris Hipkins won the second debate, nothing has changed. The needle didn't move. Chris Luxon didn't fall apart, he just wasn't as interested in yelling over people as Hipkins was. As one reviewer put the Newshub debate, it was more game show than game changer. To an extent, it's all Labour have left. Voting is underway, they are a mile behind, there isn't a poll that shows their three-way combo of craziness can get the numbers required, so what have they got to lose? Well, quite a bit actually. One school of thought, surely, is that each debate they run the risk of losing. Debate one they lost and they interjected their way to victory in debate two. Although, it's important to point out that it was the so-called media experts that called it for Hipkins. An online poll in the NZ Herald using real people had it for Luxon. Either way there is risk. Labour might want to try and sure-up their vote and hope it doesn't sink further. Here is the simple truth if you are Luxon - why bother? His final week is full. I have seen the agenda and he is all over the country. He is in the lead, he has the momentum and his final week and his schedule is carefully controlled. Why shake it up because the Prime Minister got sick? Control the narrative, say the stuff you want to say and wait for the numbers to roll in Saturday night. Besides, there is already the previously scheduled debate on TV1 next Thursday. The nonsense about Christchurch and the South island and a large audience smacks of desperation. It was on, one bloke couldn't do it, it's now off. That's life. You probably would have gained more brownie points by calling it off straight away and saving those of us who are left, and can be bothered to watch, a couple of hours of yet more regurgitated material, mixed with inaudible bickering. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I think most people would agree with the winner, wouldn't they? Andrew Webster deserved the Dally M Coach of the Year. But back here we seemed to call it for Chris Hipkins. I'll come back to that, but a couple of broadcasting notes for TVNZ, given Newshub's effort last night was in a completely different league. - Get an audience that reacts because it brings life to a broadcast - Get a moderator with a personality and some energy. At times Paddy Gower is a mile over the top and says a lot of random stuff. But he is engaged, he is having fun, and he wants to get the most out of every moment. It is, and has been, in many respects the difference between TV3 and TV1 for years. So, to the winner and I have a couple of questions; Was Hipkins declared the winner by the so-called experts merely because he was more lively than debate one? And was a winner declared because people seem to want to have a result? It's sort of like going to the doctor. It doesn't matter how innocuous your issue is, unless you get a script for pills or potions you feel ripped off. So who spends that long watching two men argue if we can't decide who won it? The point being is Hipkins, if you want to give him the prize, simply argued a lot, at times, for the sake of it. In arguing a lot, do you help your cause or are you simply looking to deflect away from your case and try and put the spotlight on the other bloke? I am not saying he didn't win. But, to be honest, I am not sure I learned a lot. They will both sort feral cats. Hipkins had a road cone in his student flat. Neither had taken MDMA. The one prime ministerial moment I will give to Hipkins is when he refused to hand out knighthoods, saying it's not something a Prime Minister does in public. It's the difference between a person with the job and the responsibilities versus everyone else who can say what they want. And that, I guess, is the trouble with debates. It's hard to find the balance between the stuff that needs debating, like the economy, and the stuff that doesn't like 'gotcha' questions and knighthoods. The other point is this - are these things material? If you give the win to Hipkins does it move the needle? Will we see the gap close in the next poll? Given it's 10 points, do you save your hide and party with a debate? I don't think so. And given there are two more debates, what the hell do they cover? We know their favourite beaches, books and drug habits. Is there an original question left to ask? Will you be back for more? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If you want proof that people will see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear, I've got it for you. And it's to do with last night's leaders' debate on TV3. Which, by the way, blew last week's debate on TV1 out of the water, didn't it? Not just because Chris Hipkins appeared to be awake this time. But also because it had a much better structure and didn't waste time on pointless questions about what book the two leaders are reading at the moment. Yes, there was quite a bit of Chris Hipkins and Christpher Luxon talking over eachother. Especially at the start. But Paddy Gower didn't let them get away with not answering questions. Although there were a couple of times when he realised he wasn't going to get an answer. But that spoke volumes and so he let it be. In fact, someone texted me afterwards saying they thought Paddy was the winner on the night. But, right from the start, Chris Hipkins showed that he had obviously listened to Helen Clark who, apparently, called him up after last week's debate and said he'd been as weak as tea and needed to harden up. I made that bit up about her saying he was as weak as tea last week. But it is being reported today that Helen Clark was so unimpressed last week that she got on the blower and gave Hipkins a bit of a talking to. And he listened. And he was much stronger last night. Much stronger. And, as always happens, people are asked who they thought won the thing. Which I'll get to. But first, I've got to say that aside from beating TV1 with the debate itself, TV3 also beat TV1 hands-down when it came to the panel they put together to provide analysis afterwards. You'll remember last week how we had Tau Henare and David Cunliffe going into overdrive with the sporting analogies, which was just cringe-material, wasn't it? Last night, TV3 had Josie Pagani, Julian Wilcox and Janet Wilson. And there were zero sporting analogies. Which was brilliant in itself. And, as I say, the inevitable question was asked: who did they think won? And they all pretty much said Hipkins was the winner. I agreed with them, though, when they said that Hipkins performed more like an Opposition leader and Luxon performed more like a Prime Minister. But, overall, they thought Hipkins was the winner. And then you read all the analysis by all the other political commentators. And they're saying the same thing. Luxon wasn't necessarily bad, but Hipkins upped his game big time from last week and they're all saying he was definitely the winner on the night. Which brings me to what I was saying earlier about people —especially voters— seeing what they want to see and hearing what they want to hear. And the evidence today that that is definitely what happens. There's an online poll running on the NZ Herald website, asking people who they think won last night's debate. And the results, so far, are the complete opposite of what all the commentators are saying. When I last checked, 62% of people were saying that they thought Christopher Luxon won the debate, and 32% were saying Chris Hipkins was the winner. Which I think says a lot about how effective these debates are when it comes to informing voters. I know they're promoted as being the big chance to find out which leader sings from your songsheet, but I don't think they are at all. Wherever you are on the political spectrum, how could anyone think that —based just on what we saw last night— how could anyone think that Chris Hipkins wasn't the winner on the night? Yes, I'm just as tired of Labour as the next person. I'm just as cynical as you are of all the about-turns Labour has done in the last few weeks, desperately trying to stay in government. And, like most people, I think Labour's GST off fruit and veggie policy is just lame. It's sudden interest in having more cops - I think that's rich coming from a party that's been in government for the past six years. In fact, I'll go as far as saying that I don't think Labour even deserves another shot. But, even then, I can still see Chris Hipkins' performance last night for what it was and acknowledge that, yes, he was definitely the winner on the night. But it seems —going by this poll on the Herald website— that the majority of voters can't do that. And that the majority of voters watch things like these televised debates and see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To use an old but, nevertheless, true saying, it would never have happened in my day. I read with alarm the revelation that TVNZ, a place I have worked for a couple of times over the years, including starting the countries first TV breakfast show about a life time ago, has taken money from the Government. In this case, the money came from a Government energy agency and in return TVNZ produced so-called news stories about climate and climate change. The agency is the EECA, the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority. They spent $300,000 and, in return, got a prime time climate special, a bunch of online content on the TV1 news page, five specific articles on the TV1 website and five social media posts. The breakfast show I once started and hosted gave out five interviews with a series of so-called experts and, indeed, they got an interview on Seven Sharp, another show I once hosted. So, a Government agency can hand over money and get on the news by doing so. If that isn't a scam and a scandal I don't know what is. The defence was that in the corner of the screen was some sort of recognition that the EECA was involved. In my 42 years in this industry, that does not even come close to covering your badly exposed arse. Part of the trouble here is that the media has never been more under scrutiny and it is this very sort of thing that gives the critics all the material they need. Of course, it's made worse that it's a Government department handing over taxpayers money to a Government run media outlet, the same outlet that the same Government was desperate to merge with its Government radio station. That was the same merger that in its rules of engagement, as pointed out by the former TVNZ CEO no less, had editorial independence further down the list of priorities than it already was. You can't claim editorial independence, you can't defend and get exercised about editorial independence as so much of the media have these past handful of tumultuous years, if you are for sale to the Government who get to buy your content for $300,000. Yes, money is tight. The media are in the gun financially, sponsorship and partnerships are real and well established and, to be blunt, most welcome. But that's not what we are talking about here. No one buys an interview on this show. Never have, never will. I would have said the same thing when I was at TVNZ and when I was at TVNZ the thought would have horrified us. I can hand on heart say I would not have touched it with a barge pole. So yes, it would not have happened in my day. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
So why are so many mainstream media outlets so poor at telling the news? I say this after tuning into One News coverage of the coronation only to blunder into a 5 minute piece about Harry, followed by how to cook coronation quiche. Maybe they thought they were being entertaining, but instead they came off as infantile. So I tuned over to BBC World. There, they were talking about the King's involvement in the arts and they followed it with more details about the ceremony. The story was about the King and his country, not his errant son. In fact, Harry arrived on a commercial flight, gave no interviews, joined the rest of the family, sat with other retired or non working royals (which is what he is), and afterwards he went to the airport to go home to see his own family. No fights, no showdowns, no dramas. Yet the Mirror alone, over the week ran 100 articles about Harry, mostly derogatory. People have described the onslaught as 'hate for hire'. Even when Mike Hosking wrote 1000 words about the Coronation for the Herald the paper chose to highlight one sentence in which he said Harry looked alone and a little lost as the headline. I actually thought Harry seemed relaxed and chatty, but who cares. It's only the media that was so obsessed with Harry. Today they've moved on to another royal cliché. The breakfast show on TV1 was covering whether it was time for New Zealand to become a republic. Too soon and too stupid in my book. I don't believe it will happen in my lifetime. Particularly after the success of this weekend. The reason the British monarchy the most successful monarchy on Earth is that they have spent hundreds of years slowly backing out of the day-to-day affairs of state so that today they are purely performative and symbolic. No one is feeling oppressed or ruled by this family. This story was not about the King, or his son, or the institution of the constitutional monarchy. It was about the British nation. It's about their capability and their spirit. In the past year the Brits have seen three historic royal events - the Diamond Jubilee, the Queen's funeral, and now the King's coronation. And they've all been faultless triumphs of organisation, story telling and co-ordination involving thousands. This was not live coverage of an old toff sitting in a chair in a church and having someone put a fancy hat on his head, as some critics portrayed it. This was a nation showing the world what it can do and that it's the best in the world in doing it. It was a show of strength and order and no-one is cancelling that any time soon. This week, the guys discuss the fallout of Crown Jewel. Brad gushes over Alexa Bliss's hot tag, and about Gunther's IC title run. Tyler praises Bianca Belair, and not Logan Paul. Who had the best showing on Saturday? In AEW, the championship eliminator tournament is set. Tyler and Brad make their predictions about who comes out of the bracket, and they once again wonder about why Miro isn't on our screens. Will the victor be Absolute, or will the Firm be victorious?Plus, the three-segment show is back! Brad begins the episode with an update on the new car and a lost LEGO set, and they both give an update on grad school. Brad looks nostalgic when he gives Tyler a parenting story, and Tyler looks disappointed when talking about CM Punk. No, wait. It's Drake. Same person? Former Blackcaps' all-rounder and current White Ferns bowling coach Jacob Oram joins the show to chat about New Zealand's home summer, his playing days, the move to coaching and the Black Clash. In the first part of the show, Jacob talks about being back in the commentary box with Magic Talk, the Blackcaps' #1 Test ranking, what he finds most impressive about Kane Williamson and the rapid rise of fellow tall timber Kyle Jamieson. As we take a walk down memory lane, we bounce around some of the up and downs of Jacob's career, which included six international hundreds, two five-wicket bags, a hat-trick, three World Cups, the IPL and plenty more highlights in between, and how his cricketing education has prepared him for his current role with the White Ferns. We wrap up by discussing Jacob's upcoming challenge - taking on Team Rugby under lights at Hagley Oval on 22 January in the Black Clash. In case there was any doubt, he's predicting a win for Team Cricket, and is already throwing a few jabs at the likes of Israel Dagg and Jordie Barrett. If you'd like to find out more information on the Black Clash, check out https://www.blackclash.co.nz/ (https://www.blackclash.co.nz/). The first ball will be bowled at 6:30pm NZ time, broadcast live and full on TV1 here in New Zealand. And if you're a new listener to the podcast, check out our back catalogue. There's plenty more great interviews with current players, legends, journalists and characters from all over the cricketing world.
