Have you read the book, “The Obstacle is the Way” from Ryan Holiday…If not…read it!` What if “embedded inside the problems” we are facing or “inherent in it” were certain benefits…benefits only for you? What would you do if you knew that? Let's be honest…probably nothing causes most of us are the same… we are simply paralyzed or stuck when it comes to massive obstacles in our lives. The reason for this is that stuff that blocks us is blocking us for a reason…Fear, Frustration, Depression, Anger…years and years of programming have us trapped inside our heads. Usually, we know exactly what to do but simply CANNOT ACT…Right? So why is it that some people can push through their problems and others can't? Why do most of us get stuck and can't seem to get past the same challenges that plague us week after week or month after month in our lives? There are men and women in life that have become famous because they have overcome their challenges and went on to become amazing leaders because they used the challenges or obstacles to propel themselves to amazing heights…the better versions of themselves. People like Abraham Lincoln, John D Rockefeller, Margaret Thatcher, Amelia Earhart, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan and on and on and on…. Why and How did all these people overcome massive obstacles to become Great and trust me they all had massive obstacles to overcome in their individual stories. Bottom line, all Great leaders and successful people find a way to turn Weakness into Strength. Like oxygen to fire, their obstacles become fuel to their internal fires that burned. All of these people learned to Flip their Obstacles upside down and turn them into Fuel. It's not about ONLY “changing the way you look at things” …it involves thoughts, actions and commitment to a purpose…a philosophy in your life. This is what the idea of Stoicism entails. The most important thing to remember from the start is that most problems that are keeping us stuck in life are INTERNAL not EXTERNAL problems in our lives. Most things that happen to us are things that we wrestle with in our minds and because of our perception to the obstacles and problems that we face. In the book The Obstacle is the Way…Ryan Holiday talks about Overcoming Obstacles is a Discipline of Three Critical Steps…Perception, Action, and the Will. All 3 of these steps are important to really and truly turning your obstacles into benefits and fuel in your life. You need to start by analyzing how you look at a problem…your Perception. Then you need to work on the energy, creativity and approach you use to break the problems down and turn them into opportunities. Finally, you need to cultivate and maintain an inner WILL that will help you to handle any defeat and difficulty. With your perception you need to understand and recognize your power, deal with your never and emotions, and learn to focus on the present moment. With your Responses and Actions, you will need to understand and focus on moving forward, being persistent, channeling your energy and sizing the moment to choose your direction. And with your WILL (part 3 of the process) you will need to practice discipline, find peace of mind, and find motivation outside of yourself. When you realize that you are not the only one dealing with problems you face and that the Hero's in the stories of life are not “superhuman” or even always “unique, gifted or rare”, you will start to learn that becoming Great is simply a process. A Path that each of us can choose to take if we will just apply some time-tested principles to our lives. So…why do I love the book The Obstacle is the Way and this idea of Stoicism? First, I feel like it's time that each of us First recognizes that Our Perspective is the key to changing our results in life. Second, that there are specific and proven strategies to help us do this. Third, I want you to know that you are not alone and that you can change your life on a Dime and start to create the life you were truly meant to live. Let's start to do the heavy lifting in life. Let's be willing to do what it takes to accept that the road is difficult and (instead of struggling without happiness), lets learn to Struggle “intentionally” to Create more Happiness, Fulfillment and Success in our lives. That is the purpose behind why I do this podcast. That is what we are going to try and accomplish each morning that we spend 10-15 minutes with motivation, inspiration and education.

In this solo episode, I again look at commitment, a measure of mental toughness, from different angles with the aim of helping you stay on top of your goals. Finding ways not to be derailed so easily when the inevitable setbacks and obstacles find you. I also touch on the importance of emotional control and managing your emotions on your journey. Where I go on to share excerpts from 2 previous episodes of Demystifying Mental Toughness with European Tour Golfer Chris Paisley and the inspirational former 2 x World Champion in Para Triathlon Steve Judge, as well as discussing a quote from Hank Haney's book “This Big Miss” where he discussed his coaching years with Tiger Woods. John works with men in helping them change their mindset. In this episode, John will share with us how he is making an impact in the mindset world and his journey to becoming the person he is today. Was bringt dich wirklich weiter?
What is Up SharkNation! In this episode Luke and Mark break down the Ryan Holiday best seller - The Obstacle is the Way. 'The Obstacle is the Way' is a book about being ruthlessly optimistic and rational in life. We tend to get easily dejected, disappointed, and frustrated by our failures and eventually give up too easily. The author argues that with a simple change in our perspective and attitude, what seems like challenging obstacles to become once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. The book is build on the concepts of stoicism but uses modern examples to illustrate points to the reader. Key takeaways: 1. The book gives the reader a good grounding in stoicism and allows the reader to reflect on how this philosophy can help them navigate life. 2. Perception is key. How you see obstacles will determine the action you take. Lost your job? How can you see this as an opportunity? 3. Action is Key. You must continue on the path no matter the challenges in your way. It's the staying power that produces the most impressive results in life. You must not get rattled, angry, or upset by setbacks. 4. Amor fati. Love everything that happens to you and meditate on your own mortality. By accepting what is, and putting events into the context of your own mortality you will be able to be proactive rather than reactive. Luke and Mark give the book an 8/10 For feedback: Luke@Shark.ie
‘What can I do to turn the obstacle into an advantage?' In the 2014 book, The Obstacle Is The Way author Ryan Holiday explains how we can use stoicism to tackle obstacles and then use them to our advantage. Holiday says obstacles can help us move ahead in our life's journey. In this episode of The Synopsis, we take a quick look at the main lessons from The Obstacle is the Way.
Ryan Holiday is one of his generation's most influential thinkers. Many people - from rappers to NFL quarterbacks to corporate CEOS and entrepreneurs - credit his writing for introducing them to the teachings of the stoic philosophers. Holiday's books like The Obstacle Is The Way, Ego Is The Enemy, and Stillness Is The Key aren't just popular, they're also respected by historians and scholars. But, he wasn't always a successful writer. Holiday started his career as a marketer — which became the topic of his first book.

This episode is a first for this podcast--a “part two” continuation of a previous episode. It features a fellow coach and my good friend, Chad James, and together we unpack the 5 ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit that I shared in Ep. 027, Breaking the Stuckness Stalemate: A Path to Transformation. When I released that episode, I was vaguely aware that it felt unfinished somehow, but I couldn’t put my finger on why. Then I got unsolicited feedback from my wife and Chad that although they really liked the episode, it felt unfinished to them, too. And Chad mentioned that the five basic ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit was the part he wanted to hear more about. That connected the dots for me on what felt unfinished and what needed to be done about it. And since I’ve been wanting to have Chad on the podcast for a while anyway, I decided to strike while the iron was hot, as it were, and kill two birds with one stone by asking Chad to join me to help land this plane that was left circling the airfield. If you haven’t already tuned in to Ep. 027, you can still listen to this one first because I summarize the big idea from that episode at the beginning of this one. But for full benefit, I do recommend listening to Ep. 027, too. It’s short and easy to digest at just 15 mins--and in it I pull back the curtain on one of my own recent episodes of stuckness on the way to making the point. Introducing Chad James Chad James is a veteran business coach with 20+ years of experience. His own experience in business and his intuitive gifting for discerning core issues, coupled with empathy, compassion, and a vast resource of tools and strategies for optimizing business and life, make Chad a highly-sought-after, highly-trusted, and valuable partner for “succeeding faster, living better, and creating the life you’ve always imagined.” He’s led an amazingly diverse and adventurous life, and he’s often picking up some new pursuit for the sake of stretching and challenging himself and embracing the “beginner’s mind” again. He has a huge heart. He brings all of who he is to his work as a coach. Chad’s also a good friend of mine and a mentor in life and business, too. In fact, he was catalytic in my development of The Graveyard Group masterminds--of which he is a founding member--and has helped me climb numerous professional learning curves more quickly than I would have on my own. The original concept out of which I developed this 2-part podcast series, “If you’re stuck, get moving,” was formulated in preparation for an event at which Chad invited me to speak. To say that he’s been influential in my life would be a huge understatement. Something New from Chad--and a Special Deal for You Chad has just launched a brand new project that I’m really excited about and I hope you’ll check out, called Mavericks--a membership-based group coaching experience that makes Chad’s wealth of wisdom, tools, and strategies available to many more than ever before, in the context of a group of others playing full-out in the game of life. I’m pumped to share that Chad’s offering Andrew Petty is Dying listeners 25% off of their first-month’s membership. Just visit carrynobrand.com, and enter the code “Andrew” at checkout. Membership is super reasonably priced at less than $100 a month, and it gives you exclusive access to Chad and his treasure trove of resources. First, a Refresher: Ep. 027 Summary If you haven’t yet tuned into part 1 of this 2-part series on breaking the stuckness stalemate, go here to tune in or read the shownotes, or read this brief summary of the main points, below: The Big Idea: If you’re stuck, get moving. Even more specifically, get moving with and through the stuckness. Other Important Stuff Supporting the Big Idea Stuck is never fun--in fact, it can actually be really painful--but stuckness is a normal and necessary part of life as a human on planet Earth. It alerts us to the fact that there’s a gap between where we are and where we want to be. And something unconscious and unknown is in our way. Stuckness is a chance to make the unconscious conscious--to generate fresh insight to which we can then apply action and achieve some sort of transformation. Because Insight + Action = Transformation. The stuckness is always there for a reason. With practice, we can learn to see the stuckness as an indicator that we’re on the brink of a new opportunity to grow and evolve. But moving through stuckness to the good stuff beyond is less like the caterpillar emerging from a caterpillar than it is like a snake shedding its skin. It takes effort and intention and time--and it’s uncomfortable. The accompanying psychological pain of stuckness is essential, though. Our desire for relief from it motivates us to do the work to get unstuck. The discomfort is necessary to produce the insights that lead to action that result in some kind of transformation. Stuckness is a guide appointed by our hearts and minds to show us the way to something even better. We have choices, of course, when stuckness shows up. Broadly speaking, we can retreat from it, stall out in the face of it, or advance through it. Neither retreating nor stalling out will produce a good result. Only advancing through it will. Here are five basic ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit: Become familiar with your own tell-tale signs of stuckness. In my experience, some of the typical signs include irritability, distractedness, restless energy, a lack of focus, and loss of a sense of humor. Acknowledge that you’re stuck, and invite the stuckness to teach you. This acceptance will create the openness of heart and mind that allows the unconscious to be made conscious. Don’t fight it or try to muscle your way past it. Resistance or avoidance or sheer force of will makes the stuckness an enemy rather than a useful mentor. Take 100% responsibility for your stuckness. It’s your problem--no one else’s. Request help from others--friends, experts, a therapist, whomever or whatever seems appropriate to the situation--but retain full ownership of the problem and the solution. Tap into the negative energy--frustration, anger, etc.--to fuel positive forward movement through the stuckness. Finally, get moving--with and through the stuckness. So, if you’re stuck, get moving. Even more specifically, get moving through the stuckness so it can teach us what it’s there for. The more skillful we become at leveraging life’s many encounters with stuckness, the more we will milk out of this life, the more we will bring into it for our own fulfillment and others’ benefit, and the fewer deathbed regrets we’ll have. Now, Part 2! Now, without further ado, let’s jump into the meat of this episode--part 2 of Breaking the Stuckness Stalemate: The 5 Ingredients in the Recipe for Using Stuckness to Our Benefit, with Chad James! Since this part 2 episode focuses on unpacking the 5 ingredients in much greater depth and detail, I’ll organize what follows under subheadings for each ingredient. I won’t come close to capturing all of the great stuff, so tune in to the full episode for more. Ingredient 1: Get Acquainted With It Become familiar with the tell-tale signs of stuckness. In my experience, some of the typical signs include irritability, distractedness, restless energy, a lack of focus, and loss of a sense of humor. Some key points from this part of the discussion: It’s important to recognize the primary emotion you’re experiencing. Sometimes, somatic (physical) indicators appear first in times of mental (psychological) stuckness--even before we’re aware of the specific emotion. So training ourselves to become more aware of our specific “psychosomatic” early warning signs is an important part of using stuckness to our benefit. For Chad, common psychosomatic indicators are sensations in the center of his chest and tightness in his neck. This helps us avoid the instinctive “fight or flight” response to discomfort and unpleasant emotions--and move with and through the stuckness instead. We brought Steven Pressfield’s concept of Resistance--a form of stuckness--into the conversation, from his fantastic book, The War of Art. (To get the essence of this Resistance idea (and a whole lot more) w/out first reading the whole book, tune into Tim Ferriss’ recent interview with Steven Pressfield.) Chad had this to say, “I think that one of the very important concepts in taking things to the next level is understanding--not just understanding but accepting and maybe even celebrating--that Resistance is part of that journey. So as we see that Resistance, that could be an exciting moment, it could be an awesome moment, it could be an area where we go, "Oh wait, something cool's about to happen!" When we change our relationship with Stuckness / Resistance, we can learn the lesson it’s there to teach us and achieve the transformation available on the other side. The hard way--through the stuckness, for example--is often the best way. And more... Ingredient 2: Acknowledge It Acknowledge that you’re stuck, and invite the stuckness to teach you. This acceptance will create the openness of heart and mind that allows the unconscious to be made conscious. Don’t fight it or try to muscle your way past it. Resistance or avoidance or sheer force of will makes the stuckness an enemy rather than a useful mentor. Some key points from this part of the discussion: “The faster we energetically acknowledge that something is wrong...the faster we can begin to take action toward fixing it. And often that action...just has to do with moving toward it.” -Chad If I fail to acknowledge it, I start living my life in avoidance of it. So it’s still calling the shots. It’s better to just acknowledge it, deal with it, and move on. Ingredient 3: Own It Take 100% responsibility for your stuckness. It’s your problem--no one else’s. Request help from others--friends, experts, a therapist, whomever or whatever seems appropriate to the situation--but retain full ownership of the problem and the solution. Some key points from this part of the discussion: Nobody’s coming to save you--as Chad’s Air Force Colonel dad reminded him as a kid. As adults, it’s our job to self-rescue. If we expect or demand that others will fix our stuckness, we’ll get into victim territory and create unnecessary collateral damage. So I hear...not that I have any recent personal experience with this… Take responsibility first. Then enroll others to help you. Your spouse / significant other is not your therapist. Ingredient 4: Harness It Tap into the negative energy--frustration, anger, etc.--to fuel positive forward movement through the stuckness. Some key points from this part of the discussion: “Be with” the discomfort of stuckness. If we’re constantly fighting it, we can’t act our way out of it. If we didn't have some of the pain associated with these moments of stuckness, we'd lack the motivation to grow. Cognitive dissonance pulls us forward. Slow down. If we're inclined to believe that we can't slow down for an episode of stuckness, then we’re going to revisit it again later. The stuckness will recur and build until you HAVE to pay attention to it--often at a much higher cost. If we slow down, be with it, and rely on the fact that we've been here before--then we tend to put ourselves in a better place for action. And a plethora (cue The Three Amigos clip…) of metaphors to help us “see” what we’re saying--from dirtbike racing to soccer and mountain biking and flying a plane. As in these things, so in life! Ingredient 5: Take Action Finally, get moving--with and through the stuckness. Some key points from this part of the discussion: If nothing else, simply be sure to take some action, to move in some way. If you’re stuck, get moving. Good action is never wishing the problem would go away. Good action starts from the point of stuckness and moves forward from there. Action with intention toward our stuckness always solves our problem better. It’s important to act on the insights we gain from slowing down to learn what the stuckness is there for. Take action on what you learn so the insight can produce transformation. Insight + Action = Transformation. There are things we simply can’t know without taking action. You can’t pre-solve stuckness. You can’t think your way out of stuckness. You have to act your way out of stuckness. That’s It In a Nutshell. Now It’s Your Turn. With Chad’s help and over two episodes, I’ve done what I can to help us understand stuckness, upgrade our relationship with it, and use it to our benefit. Now it’s your turn. What are one or two insights you’ve gained on this topic than you can put to work in your own life right now? Break the Stuckness Stalemate in Your Own Life I hope this episode has helped you evolve your relationship with stuckness--our challenging but normal and necessary companion in life. In this episode I talk about the book "The Obstacle is the Way" by Ryan Holiday. I discuss two main themes from the being of the book and then elaborate on them with some of my own opinions and thoughts. The themes I delve into are Perception and how perception is everything. Also, Objectivity and if we can see events in our lives and around us for what they truly are, and not we want them or make them to be by using our life experiences influencing the situation, attitude and outcome.
About the Author Ryan Holiday is a writer and media strategist. When he was 19 years old, he dropped out of college to apprentice under Robert Greene, author of The 48 Laws of Power. He had a successful marketing career at American Apparel and went on to found a creative agency called Brass Check, which has advised clients like Google, TASER, and Complex, as well as many prominent bestselling authors, including Neil Strauss, Tony Robbins and Tim Ferriss. He is the author of ten books, including Ego Is the Enemy, The Daily Stoic, Conspiracy and Stillness is the Key which have sold more than 2 million copies in thirty languages and have a following among NFL coaches, world-class athletes, TV personalities, political leaders, and others around the world. He spends most of his time on a ranch outside Austin, Texas where he does his writing and work in between raising cattle, donkeys and goats. Source: https://ryanholiday.net/about/ About the Book The Obstacle is the Way has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do. The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. Ryan Holiday shows us how some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck. If you’re feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way, it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era. Source: https://www.amazon.com/ Buy the book from The Book Depository -https://www.bookdepository.com/Obstacle-is-Way-Ryan-Holiday/9781781251492 /?a_aid=stephsbookshelf BIG IDEA 1 (5:47) – Invoke the reverse clause. There’s a quote from the book that says, “The impediment to action advances action, what stands in the way, becomes the way”. Ultimately the obstacle is the way. Marcus Aurelius, who is talked about in the book, suggests that we need to turn our obstacles upside down and have a way to find another path if necessary. Stoicism suggests that we have a choice, whether we will move over, around or through the obstacles that appear in our life. One concept in the book is the flank attack on an obstacle – stepping back and finding a new path. Take the line that is least expected which is not always the ideal one but gets us around, over or under the obstacle that is in our way. BIG IDEA 2 (7:06) – Behaviours and virtues. If an emotion can’t change the situation, it’s probably unhelpful. This doesn’t mean you can’t feel the emotion – vent, rant or even cry. It is about how you control (or domesticate) your emotions. Stoicism is about emotional regulation or control. We need to tame emotions; train them and use them to our advantage. The virtues of stoicism include patience, courage, humility, resourcefulness, justice, reason and creativity. These are the virtues that you need to have to overcome the obstacles in your way. BIG IDEA 3 (8:37) – Act. The root to overcoming the obstacles is through action. Despite the situation you find yourself in, you have the courage to take action. If you fail, that is okay, that’s just feedback that you need a different path and you just have to find a new way. Problems are our chance to do our best. And we shouldn’t assume everything will go well; we should do pre mortem and plan for problems so we know how to react. External factors influence that path but not the direction. We should always be moving forward. Reseña y comentarios del libro The Obstacle is The Way, escrito por Ryan Holiday.
In this episode, I’m highlighting some of my favorite excerpts from the best selling book, The Obstacle is the Way, by Ryan Holiday. But before we dig into what is one of my favorite books — one that I’ve given as a gift to dozens of friends and family over the last four years — I want to take a minute in this first episode to give a little bit of background and context for this podcast. The idea of BookNotes for me was born over 20 years ago when I determined that I wanted to retain as much as possible — I wanted to read to learn, really learn—and to improve my writing. So, in 1997, I began keeping a meticulous record of everything that I read. There’s a saying drifting around out there that says you don’t have to remember what you read to be smart; you only need to know where to find it again. And I took that to heart because I’m a guy who was not a great student — that’s putting it lightly! As a student, I had a terrible time grasping concepts and retaining information—we know that the retention of knowledge can only happen with repetition — and so I’ve relied on this. BookNotes have served me well over the years. I can grab quotes, anecdotes, facts and case studies from these great books and teach them in various programs that I have the honor of teaching to organizations around the world. How this podcast works is pretty simple. I’m sharing with you the excerpts that I’ve highlighted. These are the passages that, for one reason or another, struck me as important or powerful. These are the passages that I wanted to refer to and reflect on quickly. In each BookNotes episode, I’m reading those excerpts — and hopefully, we learn some great things together! And please, if you have comments or feedback or want to know when another podcast is released, leave a comment, learn more at www.jeffchavez.net or follow along on Instagram @jeffchavez71

How to be an achiever inspite of the hurdles and obstacles which comes in the way of our success is discussed deeply in this episode of Reader's Guide.
You have high standards….yes? And you’re great at setting big goals. But like….do you ever find yourself waiting to be happier until you’ve achieved something external? “Once I quit my day job, I’ll be a lot happier.” “I just need to book a national commercial. I’ll be happier then.” “Now if I could just find a girlfriend - oh man, then I’d be happy…..” Sure. All of these things would make you happy. But what if I achieved alllll of the awesome things - and still felt unfulfilled?? Meet DaJuan Johnson. He’s an actor recurring on BOSCH (Amazon), with credits including Grey’s Anatomy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Days of Our Lives, and General Hospital. Despite having an impressive resume to his name, he still felt he was missing something. So he started Think Bigger Coaching, where he helps actors “STOP spinning and start focusing their dreams, setting some attainable goals and getting to that Oscar speech they've practiced so many times in the mirror!” He also runs a free facebook group, the Think Bigger Tribe, where he’s constantly giving away free information to actors! What exactly does it take these days to be nicknamed the Mad Scientist? Are we talking Doc Brown in a DeLorean cruising through a space-time continuum, or is it more of a beaker and test tube vibe? Whatever the case, we’re stoked to have the modern-day Mad Scientist and world-renowned strength athlete and coach Chris Duffin on the Brute Strength podcast this week for his second episode. In Chris’ first episode, we learned about the upbringing that shaped his mentality for creating Kabuki Strength. Think about what will or can go wrong and what to do about it - The only guarantee we have is that things will go wrong, and the only way for us to deal with it is to prepare for the inevitable failures, so we can either answer them, fix them or even endure them - Constraints in life are a good things, because they can accept them and let them guide us. - Part of the human condition is being hindered and having constraints placed on us, and it is up to us to not take them personally. - To do great things, we have to endure tragedy and setbacks, and we have to learn to find joy in these setbacks - We can’t choose what happens to us, we can only choose how we react, and why would we choose to be negative? - When something doesn't go our way, or we don’t get the results we want, we want to quit. The better response is to keep fighting and keep pushing forward. - Creating a shared goal and common shining light, means you can hold yourself to a higher standard, and always look at how others are benefitting from your actions - We waste a lot of time doing things that are not important, and death needs to be there to remind us that we should be careful with how we spend our time. - Just when you think something ends, something else comes up. This is life, never ending problems that we have to overcome - Stoic metaphor of fire: the fire uses the fuel to burn brighter, but ultimately consumes it. - First perceive reality correctly, Secondly act correctly and finally endure and accept the world as it is. - Leave no option unexplored Get the book here: http://a.co/gOEax03 Get audible: http://goo.gl/AjqkEB Please subscribe and rate the Mindset Toolkit Podcast Connect: Website: https://mindsettoolkit.wordpress.com/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mindset-toolkit-podcast/id1245200556?mt=2 Email: podcast@wynnterprise.com Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/selwynns/
Topics: Part 2 - Action - In the process of dealing with the reality of a bad hand, you can either fold or play it for all you’ve got. Play it hard, working through the problem will reveal the steps to success. - Obstacles won’t unobstacle themselves. They'll only get worse - Meet our obstacle with action, energy, persistence, coherent and logical process, strategic vision, craftiness, eye for savvy ingenuity - You’ve got to start to go anywhere and the circumstances in which you start will never be perfect, but the first and best thing you have to do is say ‘yes’ and take action. Once you get started, no matter how slight. You will build momentum and achieve greatness. - Always ask you if there is more you can be doing - There is an opportunity cost to you not acting with speed and vigor. As you slowly proceed forward, you’ve lost the opportunity to do more in that same amount of time. - Slow pressure applied from many different angles will provide the path to the solution - The solution isn’t going to be easy. Don't look for angels, look for angles - Stop fearing failure, you need to fail in order to create a better product - Failure puts you in corners you have to think your way out of - Anticipated short term failure is better than a final catastrophic failure. It’s a cost of winning - Follow the process and not the prize - Exist in the present, taking one step at a time and not getting distracted anything else - We tend to think A to Z and forget about the B through Y steps in order to get there - Take pride in your job, no matter how low. Other people will not want to do it and that is exactly why you must - Don’t worry about the future, you must be in the present and you’re never too good for anything. - Think like a craftsman - with pride and dedication. - There is always a divide between, The way you wish they are and way they actually are. You need to think about how you’ll bridge the gap in creative ways - Don’t occupy too much of your time looking for the perfect solution, simply the solution that works - You don’t always find victory in the traditional head on attack. Try and find the indirect, hazardous, never thought of before angle of attack - Action can have many meanings. It’s not always moving moving forward. Non action can be action, by using the energy of the obstacle to defeat itself - When we want something too badly, we can put ourselves in a worse situation, we can advance, not necessarily by pushing forward - Be free where it matters, within. Be physically loose & mentally tight. - Rather than being oppressed by the rules, see how you can subvert them and change them in a less obvious way - You must press forward, just when everyone else sees disaster. You can act swiftly and unexpectedly - Ordinary people shy away from troubles. The extraordinary people do the opposite, they are their best in these situations and they look for advantage in the crises. - Perceptions can be managed, actions can be directed. Look for opportunity. Seize the initiative - Instantly accept the verdict/result and move on. Topics: Part 1 - Perception Part 2 - Action Part 3 - The Will 1. Perception: - It’s how we see the reality of the world. We need to take our preconceived notions about reality and only rely on a disciplined, rational and logical thought process - Problems that befall you, aren’t a negative situation, rather an opportunity to learn and how you handle those situations is what makes you grow as a person. - Don’t lose control of your emotions, we can choose or not choose to feel 2. Recognize your power: - Your negative emotions are nothing but destructive to your current situation. - Situations cannot be good or bad, it’s only our human perceptions that judge it so. See every situation as to what they could be, not about the problems they bring 3. Steady your nerves - Troubles will always find us and talent won’t necessarily get us through the problem. Poise and a level temper will get us through. - Resist the temptation to declare this a failure and accept the fact that the solution is up to you and you’re the only one who’s responsible 4. Control your emotions - We all make plans and when they don’t go as planned, we panic and throw them out the window - a fatal error - Focus all your energy on fixing the problem and finding the solution. Worrying is an opportunity cost of your attention, you’re focusing on something other than the solution and maybe are blind to the solution - We defeat emotions with logic, and we gain logic with questions 5. Practice objectivity: - See simply what is there, no judgements, exaggerations, misperceptions, distractions. - It's easy to give somebody else advice, because we lack the emotional baggage and subjectivity regarding the issue 6. Alter your perspective - The goal is not to ignore fear, but to explain it away - Our perspective sets the framework for our response to a situation. Perception precedes actions 7. Is it up to you? - Focus your efforts on things you can control, the internal thoughts. Our emotions, creativity, determinations, decisions - this is our playing field, this is what we focus efforts on changing - Instead of analysis and figuring out what things mean and why the thing are the way they are, you should just be getting to work - Ignore the totality of the environment. Let each moment be a refresh in your brain, so you can live in moment and focus on what’s important 9. Think differently - Don’t think of the impossible being impossible, you need to push through what other’s think of as a hard limitations, which are rooted in fear - Have faith in your ability to overcome and unfair task, to test what they’re made of, rise to the occasion 10. Finding the opportunity - Our own perceptions play a huge role in success, we need to avoid being overwhelmed by obstacles. Control emotions and analyze objectively - We assume everything should be a certain way, and when they’re not, we assume we’re at a disadvantage - Blessings and burdens are not mutually exclusive, think of any setback as having a ‘second act’ of opportunity. An immediate negative situation, the solution is packaged beneath the surface 11. Prepare to act - Problems are as bad as we think. The worst thing to happen is the event AND how you think about it. - Don’t attack the problem that’s in your way with a gambler’s mindset of defying the odds, but rather, know the dangers, have calculated the risks and have a strategy to win Tune in next week, for part 2!
