Oleksandra Matviichuk is one of the leading lawyers and human rights advocates pushing for accountability for grave crimes committed during Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In 2007, Oleksandra founded the Center for Civil Liberties, which she still leads. In 2022, it became the first Ukrainian organization to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The center was awarded the prize that year alongside human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, and the Russian human rights organization Memorial.  The Center for Civil Liberties aims to advance human rights and democracy in Ukraine and the broader Europe-Eurasia region. It defends individual rights, develops legislative changes, conducts public oversight over law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, and offers educational activities for young people. How does the Center for Civil Liberties promote accountability? And what does Oleksandra see as the key issues and trends to watch as this full-scale war nears its third-year mark in February?Just Security's Washington Senior Editor, Viola Gienger, recently sat down with Oleksandra to discuss her work.

This week's quiz: On 8 October, I asked you a question about RFI English journalist Jan van der Made's article “Macron hails Nobel prize for 'unswerving defenders of human rights in Europe'”. You were to send in the names of the Peace Prize laureates and why they won.  The answer is: There were three winners: Ales Bialiatski, the International Memorial in Russia, and the Centre for Civil Liberties in Ukraine.  Ales Bialiatski is a political activist in Belarus known for his work with the Viasna Human Rights Center. Bialiatski is currently in prison in Belarus. The Russian International Memorial tracks human rights violations across the Russian Federation. It was officially closed down by the Russian high court just four days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties is attempting to document the human toll resulting from the conflict with Russia.  As the Nobel committee wrote: “The Peace Prize laureates represent civil society in their home countries. They have for many years promoted the right to criticise power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens. They have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human rights abuses, and the abuse of power. Together they demonstrate the significance of civil society for peace and democracy.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “What do you remember about your first kiss?” The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Kashif Khalil from Faisalabad Pakistan, who is also the winner of this week's bonus question. Also on the list of lucky winners this week is Nafisa Khatun, the president of the RFI Mahila Shrota Sangha Club in West Bengal, India; Sharifun Islam Nitu, who's a member of the RFI Amour Fan Club in Rajshahi, Bangladesh; RFI Listeners Club member Solomon Fessahazion from Asmara, Eritrea, and RFI English listener Tutul Khan from Naogaon, Bangladesh. Her work paints uncompromising portraits of sexual encounters, abortion, illness and the deaths of her parents. PEACE This year's Nobel Peace Prize was shared Friday last week by jailed Belarus rights activist Ales Bialiatski, the Russian group Memorial and the Ukrainian organization Center for Civil Liberties. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said the laureates “have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human right abuses and the abuse of power. Together they demonstrate the significance of civil society for peace and democracy.” The prize was seen as a strong rebuke to the authoritarian rule of Russian President Vladimir Putin. ECONMICS The final announcement came on Monday with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, which is not an original Nobel Prize but was established by the Swedish central bank in 1968. Former US Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke, who put his academic expertise on the Great Depression to work reviving the American economy after the 2007-2008 financial crisis, won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences along with two other US-based economists, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig, for their research into the fallout from bank failures. WHAT DO THE WINNERS RECEIVE? Nobel Prize laureates are invited to receive their awards at prize ceremonies held on Dec. 10, the anniversary of award founder Alfred Nobel's death in 1896. The prize includes a diploma, a gold medal and a monetary award of 10 million Swedish kronor (about US$900,000). The Nobel Peace Prize is handed out in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, while the other awards are presented in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, in line with Nobel's wishes.

(The Center for Civil Liberties )。

“Common people have a much greater impact than they can even imagine” — When asked what brings her hope, Oleksandra Matviychuk replies, “Ordinary people.” Although the challenges faced might seem insurmountable, she sees first hand how people have the power to change the status quo: “Mobilisation of common people can change world history quicker than UN intervention.” In this conversation with Adam Smith, recorded the day after the announcement of the award of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize to the organisation she heads, Matviychuk speaks of the sense of solidarity to be gained from fighting together for human rights: "This is about a story that freedom has no borders and human rights values are universal."The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2022 to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organisation Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for Civil Liberties.
