The stories that pull at us, that keep us anxious and upset, that we tell ourselves over and over -- I'm not good enough. This isn't going to work. I've already tried this. – they all come from what we haven't healed. Anat Peri has dedicated her life to teaching people how to heal, specifically when it comes to generational trauma. In this episode, Anat walks us through the five stages of healing and gives us a timeline for how long it takes to truly heal. Anat says self-improvement found her at 25. She did her first self-development program and instantly felt at home. She loved witnessing people having breakthroughs and discovering who they really are. But her business wouldn't come for another 10 years. She says she felt like an imposter at the time. But she has no regrets, she herself, was healing and seeking the tools she needed. “It's messy, it's uncomfortable, it's scary, it's painful,” says Anat. “It's all the fields. It's the full spectrum of our feelings and our emotions.” Whether you're listening in and you are on your own healing journey, or you're a practitioner and you have clients understanding the five stages is going to show you either what stages you've skipped or what the stages are to guide you. Stage 1: Awareness. Everyone comes with some step of awareness, but there is so much depth and exploration, even just in that stage of learning what safety strategies you use that keep you stuck. What limiting beliefs are running the show? If you're on your own healing journey, use a journal to dump everything unfiltered that is showing up and triggering you. Then go back and connect the dots by circling anywhere that you wrote “I feel … I am …” which will connect you back to your inner child. Your inner child is your emotion – it's the part of you that feels and is holding your limiting beliefs. Stage 2: Acceptance. This is the hardest stage for people to get past; it's the stage where people need the most support, says Anat. Acceptance means letting go that there's anything to fix or change, and most of the time there's still this programing in us who judges and wants it to change. For some people, it's normal for them to live in chaos and anxiety. But then, being in peace and harmony, suddenly they're hypervigilant and self-sabotage it because it's unfamiliar. In this stage, it's learning to observe what is happening at the level of sensation. We label things as “good or bad,” which becomes now I feel this way, how do I fix it? Instead, ask yourself where do you feel it in your body? Describe the sensation. When you speak in sensation, there is no good or bad – there just is. “I want you to think about acceptance like you're in the ocean … and there's waves,” says Anat. “Your role in acceptance is you're learning to ride the wave instead of being afraid of it and dunking your head under or just breathing. You're riding it. You're learning to ride the wave of your emotion.” Listen in for the last three stages of healing. Remember, healing takes time. It might be 18 months later and then you're good, and you don't even remember what it was like to be that other person. The Case: Mindy has Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism and experiences low energy and anxiety She's worried genetics may be making it worse because her mother also has Hashimoto's She's feeling like the genetic cards are stacked against her and there's nothing she can do to feel healthy again. The Investigation When I first met Mindy, I noted the stock she was placing on her genetics, missing things under her control. Genetics are important but they only account for 15% of our wellness picture. I knew that there were a myriad of things we could do to shift the impact of her genetics on her health. However, I also knew that a bigger shift might be needed at the epigenetic level. The Epigenetic Expert - Anat Peri To look further into what might be going on for Mindy, I invited Anat Peri back to the show. Longtime listeners may remember her from episode 55 of Health Mysteries Solved when she shared her insights on emotional resilience. I highly recommend going back and listening to (or relistening to) that episode. Anat is an inner child expert and the founder of Training Camp for the Soul. She has 18 years of experience as a trauma-informed coach using a variety of tools including mindset, somatic healing, safety connection, nervous system regulation, and inner child reparenting. Through her work, she has learned a great deal about epigenetics and how our upbringing can manifest physically in our adult minds and our health. What is Epigenetics? Epigenetics refers to the biology of our beliefs and how we view the world. It's about how our reactions to life impact our nervous system and whether we operate in a parasympathetic state or a stressful (sympathetic) state. This can have a huge impact on our health, as stress and trauma can lead to a range of health issues and can be a major trigger for Hashimoto's. Anat explains that everything we learn as children is learned from our caretakers, and if they were absent or dysfunctional, we may have learned unhealthy patterns that can impact our health as adults. Anat explains that we learn so much at a young age because as children we are like sponges; soaking up what we see, hear, and feel energetically from our caretakers. Our beliefs and the way we view the world are formed at a young age, and they can have a huge impact on our health later on. Often, we are completely unaware of the role epigenetics is playing in our health. The good news is that we can turn our epigenetics on and off, just like gene expressions. Our ability to control our epigenetics depends on our beliefs, how we regulate our nervous system, and how we speak to ourselves. Inflammation and its Impact on Health Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to injury or infection. However, chronic inflammation can contribute to a wide range of health issues, including autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's and thyroid issues. In my practice, I've seen how specific beliefs and behaviors can contribute to inflammation in the body. Beliefs and Behaviors that Impact Inflammation and Hashimoto's One of the beliefs that can increase inflammation is shame. Anat explains that shame is a powerful enough emotion that it can cause us to close in on ourselves and hide our true selves. When we feel ashamed, we may try to suppress our emotions and our needs, which can lead to chronic stress and inflammation. Fear is another powerful emotion that can contribute to inflammation, says Anat. When we are in a state of fear, our bodies release stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. Over time, chronic stress can lead to inflammation in the body. Our parents may have ingrained shame and fear responses into us at a very young age without realizing it. Growing up in a chaotic or turbulent environment can also contribute to inflammation. When our nervous system is constantly activated by stress and fear, our bodies release stress hormones, which can lead to inflammation over time. The Potential Role of Fathers in the Development of Autoimmune Diseases In this episode, we really got personal. I looked at the roles my mother and father played in my life. I shared that I felt like my father was always there for me but he didn't necessarily stand up for me when my mother wanted me to do things I didn't want to do, like playing the piano. This experience taught me that my feelings didn't matter and that I had to do what others wanted me to do. I realize now that this is how I was trained to be a people pleaser. Anat was able to relate that to having a lack of boundaries as well as self-rejection and self-abandonment and the connection to my Hashimoto's. It's really fascinating. Anat expanded the discussion further by explaining how fathers can impact the development of autoimmune diseases. She notes that fathers can influence the development of autoimmune diseases by being emotionally unavailable, neglectful, or critical. Children who grow up with fathers who are emotionally unavailable may feel rejected and develop feelings of low self-worth, which can trigger the onset of autoimmune diseases. We also talk about how fathers can influence the development of autoimmune diseases by modeling certain behaviors. For example, if a father is always putting others' needs before his own, his children may learn that it's not okay to prioritize their own needs. This is why it's so important to have a healthy relationship with both parents to reduce the risk of developing autoimmune diseases. It's crucial for fathers to be emotionally available and supportive of their children's feelings and needs. It's also important for fathers to model healthy behaviors, such as setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care, to help their children develop a healthy attitude towards themselves and others. Techniques to Connect with Your Inner Child and Begin the Healing Process Regardless of our relationship with our fathers and how it may have impacted our health, it is possible to change it now. Anat says this is possible by connecting with our inner child. This allows us to identify our emotions, feelings, beliefs, and desires as they relate to our health issues. She suggests grabbing a journal or a piece of paper and writing down everything we feel triggered, upset, frustrated, or stuck about. Alternatively, we can record ourselves talking as if we are calling our best friend who listens to us without judging. Once we have our thoughts and emotions recorded, we can identify our inner child's voice by looking for statements that begin with "I feel" or "I want." This practice helps us weed out our inner critic, ego, and shadow, which can hinder our ability to connect with our true feelings and desires. Anat says it's important to make sure that we are truly hearing our inner child's voice because it's generally not the loudest. Often, our inner critic, ego, and shadow are much more overbearing. She explains that statements that begin with "I am," "I'm upset," "I'm angry," "I feel like he doesn't listen to me," "I feel like I'm being left behind," or "I'm all alone" represent our inner child's voice. On the other hand, statements that contain "I should," "I must," or "I have to" reflect our inner critic. Meanwhile, statements that blame others and avoid taking responsibility for our feelings are the product of our ego. Finally, statements that contain shame, fear, and guilt reflect our shadow. By identifying our inner child's voice and distinguishing it from our inner critic, ego, and shadow, we can begin the healing process. Connecting with our emotions and desires is crucial to understanding ourselves and our experiences fully. It also helps us identify limiting beliefs that hold us back from living fulfilling lives. Anat Peri emphasizes the importance of being willing to look inward and confront our internal world. This practice can help us shift our focus from external factors to our internal landscape, which is where true healing begins. Scanning and Embracing Sensations in Our Body We discuss many ways to create a transformation through connecting with the inner child (and the challenges that many face doing this). One of the keys to making that connection, according to Anat, is to embrace the sensations of the body because sensations are the language of the nervous system. So, when we can learn to be with sensations and name sensations, we speak to the nervous system, and the nervous system can respond and adjust accordingly. She says that we normally put our feelings into two buckets, good feelings, and bad feelings. We label them as happy or scared or anxious, but the opportunity is to go one layer deeper, where we can identify the sensations at the root of these emotions. The following are the steps to scan and embrace sensations in our body: Step 1: Take a Deep Breath To start, take a deep breath and exhale all the stagnant air out of your mouth. Then take a deep breath, filling up the whole body deep into the belly, feeling it expand. Continue to take deep breaths from the belly while sitting in a way that feels supported. Step 2: Connect with Your Body Next, connect with your body. Feel the weight of your feet on the ground, the support of the chair or couch, and the sensation of your clothes against your skin. Step 3: Scan Your Body Once you feel connected, scan your body from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Notice any sensations, tightness, or discomfort you may be feeling. Don't try to change these sensations, just notice them. Step 4: Name Your Sensations After scanning your body, name the sensations you have noticed. For example, you may be feeling tightness in your chest, a knot in your stomach, or a tingling sensation in your arms. Step 5: Embrace Your Sensations Finally, embrace your sensations by acknowledging them and staying with them. You may want to breathe into the sensations and imagine them softening and dissipating. Remember, the goal is not to change these sensations but to allow them to be present and be with them. Connecting to the Nervous System and Controlling Hashimoto's By embracing the sensations in your body with curiosity instead of judgment or emotions, you create safety within the body and establish a type of communication with your nervous system. And remember, your nervous system is connected to your immune system, which is what controls your Hashimoto's. Integrating transformative experiences to create lasting transformation requires practice and repetition. It's not enough to have a transformative experience in a moment; it's important to integrate that experience and create new neuropathy. Scanning and embracing sensations in our body is a powerful tool to connect with our nervous system, speak to it in its language, and process emotions and sensations. Mystery Solved Mindy believed that her issues were potentially genetic but she hadn't considered the role epigenetics might be playing in her challenges with Hashiomoto's. We started our work together balancing her immune system and supporting her thyroid type. Next, we looked at various limiting beliefs and used various modalities to clear those including hypnosis. This process takes time but Mindy was willing to do the work and she got the results she was looking for. Conclusion As we learned in this episode, we are all impacted by epigenetics to some degree. Recognizing that is the first step in starting to heal. So many of us are completely unaware of the impact these hidden beliefs can have on our physical health, especially when our immune system is compromised. In today's episode, our guest is Anat Peri. She is a transformational life coach and the Founder and Head Facilitator of Training Camp for the Soul. She is committed to bringing positive energy, compassion, and tenacity to catalyze the elevation of life, relationship, and performance. By sharing her leadership expertise, formulas, healing modalities, and priceless wisdom from her life experiences, she helps her clients to own their power and create a life by design. Today, Anat will talk about the Mind & Body connection and the stages of life transformation. [5:20] Why should we listen to you? I am very human, and I am very much in this human experience even though I have 17 years of experience in the self-development space. What sets me apart from other people is that I have great tools to navigate everything with resiliency. [6:04] Where did these tools come from? My tools came from learning and experience. I've spent 17 years in the self-development space and eight years in cognitive work. Through that experience, I became a master of awareness. But life didn't look any different for me when I was 32 years old. I had a failing relationship, I was in debt, and I was lost in my career. So when I dived into body-mind connection, I realized that the mindset stuff I've done is so important. There was no connection to me and my body and how it puts me into a fight or flight response. [8:05] What are the steps you took, and what did you unfold? What unfolded for me was hitting my ground zero, where I didn't know what was best for me. And because I had that New York mentality, I thought I knew it all because I'm developing myself. But then, life hit me hard where I realized that I didn't know what was best for me. I didn't have anything to show for it. From there, I just surrendered to God and let Him take the wheel. It was the start of letting go, living in force, and allowing things to unfold. [9:39] The challenge I realized was if you don't know on a conscious level what it is that you're clearing out, you're not replacing it with something new. And if you're not replacing it with something new, then you go back out in your daily world, behaving the same way and reinforcing. [12:16] I just felt ready to leap. I thought I knew enough. I knew enough because of what I experienced, not so much what I learned. But I knew that I could take people to where I'd been. [13:04] Why do people take a long time to achieve transformation? The root of it is they're skipping the stages of Transformation and Healing. The first stage is awareness. It's what brings people to pick up a book, listen to a podcast, or hire a coach. You're aware of something that you want to change. So you gain more awareness for sure as you work with someone or explore it deeper. [13:48] Stage two is acceptance and commitment. This is where a lot of people get stuck, or they skip. You have to accept what you're experiencing or what happened to you without wanting to change or fix it. Often, when people approach something they don't like about themselves or something that happened to them, they immediately try to fix it. So there's already a rejection of it. And the level of needing to accept it would mean that you have to feel something that you probably don't want to feel. [15:13] Was there a moment in your life where rejection became a reality for yourself? I painted my dad as a workaholic. I love him dearly, but he worked running a hotel in my formative years, and I didn't see him often. So I made up my way of surviving it and created a picture for myself as daddy's girl. I lived in an illusion where I always helped him out. I thought that I had a relationship with my dad, but I was just his assistant. And facing that was heartbreaking to me. It was the most grief and sadness that I've ever felt. [18:35] When did you realize that you were going to become a coach? There was always that desire in me. When I was like 16 years old, my friends would come to me for advice. And whatever I said to them would always create a level of peace of mind for them. [19:12] In my first eight years of self-development, where it was a lot of cognitive type of work, I was still drawn to coaching then. But to me, it was really about integrity. It was about not starting coaching if I'm not living the example I want to give my clients. [21:16] Where does the spiritual base fit into your work? Stage three is getting to the root of it. Just like in nature, the root is not on the surface but below the ground. Sometimes, it is weaved into ten different roots. So it's the same thing where it's not just in our head. Getting to the root of it is through our physical body. It's in our emotional body, and it's in our energetic body. It's learning how to be with whatever you're experiencing at the level of sensation. [22:27] Importance of mind & body connection It's about the good or bad, and the opportunity is to start to relate to it at the energy level. And that it's just the sensation in the body. Excitement and anxiety feel very similar in our system. But the difference is the context you give to it. [22:55] It's also essential to connect it with a strong mindset because there's also a difference between feeling and indulging in emotions. Indulging happens when we have an experience that creates this emotion for us. But when we're feeling it, our mind is feeding it with more stories and evidence, and it's making more of that feeling where you feel like you are drowning. [27:05] Expanding the nervous system's capacity Trauma is any experience that your nervous system could not be with. The nervous system is just holding energy and sensations. When you observe these sensations with no judgment, curiosity, and love, you expand your ability to be with that frequency and energy. [28:54] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? Healing trauma will be normalized. And that it will be a thing that everyone knows, that they're capable, can do, and will walk towards. Key Quotes: [09:12 – 09:17] “Do it only if it calls to you.
