The only thing Dexter could complain about was Mia's friends Cynthia and Roxanne. Cynthia or Cyndi (sounds like sin for a reason) was married to Chet, and they had no children. Cyndi was a beautiful woman. She knew it and used it. Cyndi liked to try new things and always talked about the latest concepts. They weren't always new ideas, but they were new to her, and she spoke about them with passion like a true believer. Cyndi's latest was that the three women should start going out one night a month together, the dreaded girls' night out ( or Girls' Night, for short). Three days later while they were eating supper, Mia told Dexter about Cyndi and Roxy's Girls' Night the night before. Mia was pretty excited. "Umm, Dex; Cyndi and Roxy went out last night, Thursday's is lady's night at Maxi's. They told me it was great." Dexter pondered for a moment, something about Maxi's was out there that he couldn't remember. Then it came to him. "Isn't Maxi's like a pickup bar?" "I'm not sure about that, but it is the happ'n place to be in this town. Cyndi said that Chet didn't know what hit him when she got home. Roxy said that Tom liked how rejuvenated she was. So far, this seems to be working like they said." Mia knew better than to push any harder about the Girls' Night and going with her friends. Derek GarrisonTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Derek Garrison. Derek is the principal at a public high school in Oregon. He is also a filmmaker. In this episode, we get to know Derek and what made him decide to be a public school educator, and more specifically a principal. We also find out if he is the cool principal or not! We take a small detour and discuss one of the most important topics of our generation: Bar-B-Que on a cross-country road trip. Then we get into Derek's filmmaking. He has made several short films and other projects; and we cover a fair bit of them. We do discuss his recent short film called 'A Hint of Menace'; which is available for free on YouTube. Then we talk about his new feature film called 'Van Damned'. The behind the scenes of the making of this film is very fascinating to me. The reason that Derek decided to make this film, makes him one of the coolest dad's I have ever come across. I won't spoil the reasons here, but trust me, there aren't a ton of fathers who would do this for this reason. Derek shares some of the journey and obstacles that were in the way, and how he maneuvered around and through them to get this feature made. 'Van Damned' is doing great things on the festival circuit, and at the time of this episode's release; SHOULD be available to stream on most platforms. Check your favorite streamers & VOD platforms. Former Major League Baseball pitcher, Steve Trachsel and Chef Jason Morse with help from pitmaster, Doug Scheiding, sling a heaping helping of baseball and barbecue talk on episode 323 Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years.  Known primarily for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, he also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles.  He first joined us on episode 127 and then again on episode 143 during which he discussed a masterful gem he threw against the Boston Red Sox as he outdueled Pedro Martinez.  In this appearance we discuss the game he pitched on August 26, 2005 as he returned to the rotation after an injury and beat the San Francisco Giants 1-0.  The one run was supplied by David Wright's solo home run in the second inning.  Steve is a huge fan of barbecue and we are joined by Pitmaster, Doug Scheiding as all of us talk baseball and barbecue.  Chef Jason Morse aka Chef J had his first experience grilling and smoking meats when he was a Boy Scout.  His passion was further stoked during childhood visits to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where his grandfather served in the U.S. Army, exposing him to a culture that honors fire-smoked cuisine.  As a teenager, Jason was frying up tortillas at a Mexican restaurant and honing his knife skills at a steakhouse in the suburbs of Minnesota.  Jason then pursued a culinary degree at Johnson & Wales University.  Chef J serves as Ace Hardware's national chef spokesperson and BBQ expert.  He also runs a culinary consulting business, 5280 Culinary.  He has led Colorado Proud campaign initiatives to promote the quality of locally produced meats and agriculture.  Chef J led a healthy cooking education program for nearly 70,000 Denver, Colorado kids.
