It's Monday, October 21st, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus British University issued “trigger warning” about reading Chaucer The University of Nottingham in England has issued a “trigger warning” to students studying various medieval literature, in part because of Christian themes in the texts, reports International Christian Concern. The Daily Mail on Sunday discovered the warning through a Freedom of Information Act request. The British university warned students that the course “Chaucer and His Contemporaries” contained issues of “violence, mental illness, and expressions of Christian faith.” Geoffrey Chaucer, most widely known for writing The Canterbury Tales, was a 14th-century English author and poet whose influence on English literature is on par with William Shakespeare. Chaucer, a Christian, is referred to by some as “the father of English poetry” and is said to have influenced C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. The warning seems close to censoring Christian voices altogether. 1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” Kamala: First presidential candidate to skip Catholic fundraiser in 40 years Former President Donald Trump was the only presidential candidate to appear at the prestigious 79th annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in Manhattan on Thursday, reports The Christian Post. Vice President Kamala Harris was repeatedly criticized during the event for being the first presidential candidate in 40 years to skip the dinner, which has been a staple of presidential campaigns for decades. She appeared instead in a pre-recorded video, which was not well-received by the audience. Comedian and emcee Jim Gaffigan, who is Catholic, offered scathing jokes against Harris and the Democratic Party, reports the New York Post. GAFFIGAN:  "You know, this event has been referred to as the Catholic Met Gala. Twenty-two percent of Americans identify as Catholic. Catholics will be a key demographic in every battleground state. I'm sorry, why is Vice President Harris not here?” (cheers, laughter) Gaffigan also mocked Democrats for calling Trump an existential threat to democracy despite ousting their own incumbent president without input from voters. GAFFIGAN:  "The Democrats have been telling us Trump's re-election is a threat to democracy. In fact, they were so concerned of this threat, they staged a coup, ousted their democratically elected incumbent, and installed Kamala Harris." Trump roasted Chuck Schumer and Tim Walz for leftist lunacy Trump roasted New York Senator Chuck Schumer and the Woke party that he represents which has embraced this unbiblical notion that a person can change his or her gender. TRUMP: “Chuck Schumer is here looking very glum. But look on the bright side, Chuck, considering how ‘woke' your party has become, if Kamala loses, you still have a chance to become the first woman president.” (laughter, cheers) Trump poked fun at Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for lying when he claimed that he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 when, in actuality, in Nebraska at the time. TRUMP: "Unfortunately Governor Walz isn't here himself, but don't worry, he'll say that he was.” By 2030, 16 million kids will exit public schools The current mass exodus from public schools suggests that only half of American students will attend them in 2030, according to a report entitled “The Future of K-12 Education. The Learning Counsel, an education research institute, said it expects the number of children in public schools to drop by 16 million over the next six years, leaving just 50.26% of students enrolled. Almost a third of American students will likely be homeschooled, reports The Liberty Sentinel. Drivers of this trend will include distrust of government, school choice legislation, and parental anger with sexually explicit indoctrination. How to finish global evangelization by 2030 And finally, too many believers do not have a sense of urgency to evangelize the lost. Dr. James Davis, the founder of the Global Church Network, explained to me how many people die every day worldwide without faith in Jesus Christ. DAVIS: “If we could imagine 132 plane crashes, which makes up 66,000 deaths, that's how many people die [each day], lost without Jesus Christ. And yet there's not a sense of urgency among some to do anything about it. There must be a paradigm shift that creates a sense of strategic urgency to evangelize, make disciples, plant churches, and help finish the Great Commission.” The Global Church Network has a vision to see the world evangelized by the year 2030.  Their website is www.Finish2030.com. DAVIS: “In 2015, at the graveside of Martin Luther at Castle Church, the Global Church Network, with distinguished leaders around the globe, set an ambitious and strategic goal to help complete the Great Commission by the 2000-year birthday of the church. That would be June 9, 10, and 11 in 2030 in Jerusalem at the International Convention Center. “On that day, we're inviting more than 3,000 distinguished leaders from around the world to convene at the convention center and honor the first 3,000 that came to Christ 2,000 years ago when Peter preached that very first sermon. This is why we call it Finish2030, the celebration of the 2000- year birthday of the church.” Dr. Davis explained that we need to move on from the paradigm of the West sharing the Gospel with the rest. DAVIS: “Over the last 200 years, North America has sent tens of thousands of missionaries from around the world, and we praise the Lord for that, but the church has grown up all over the world. The strongest churches in all of the world do not reside here in the United States of North America, or in particular, even in Europe. “No longer the West going to the rest, but the best around the world going to the rest of the world. We're moving from a mission field to mission force, from parenting to partnering, from not networking to networking.” The key to the strategy of the Global Church Network is creating global Christian hubs of influence worldwide. DAVIS: “Currently, there's more than 200 hubs in the Global Church Network. We call this the global hubs of Christianity. By 2030, we will have more than 800 hubs in the network. “Every hub does at least three things. Some do four. We all synergize the best relationships, tie those relational knots, face to face, in local churches. We systematize the very best training, and we strategize for unreached peoples. No one knows the neighborhood like the neighbors. In some hubs, we also Scripturalize new Bible translations for unreached peoples. “So, we want to strategically place those hubs around the world to help us get closer and closer to the unreached, so that we can finish the Great Commission.” In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus said, “All authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to Me.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, October 21st, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Anarchy reigns in Portland, Oregon and other blue cities.  What is to be done when both the individual and the state are violating all of God's laws with impunity? When can we defend our property by shooting all violators? We look at Wyatt Earp and the shootout at the OK Corral. Then, we draw on biblical law on these matters. The Bible allows for family defense, but not so much for vigilantism and vengeance killings. The highest divorce rates on the US map still show up in Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Utah? What is it about the rural areas in the west that contribute to a breakdown of the family covenant? Rugged individualism is the ultimatization of self . . . and destroys covenant relationships. Steven Webster has carved out a rather unique career path combining sports, technology, and coaching. Originally from the UK and now in California, Steven boasts an impressive martial arts background. His expertise extends beyond the dojo, having also served as an advisor to NASA, Nike, and the NFL. Also a Microsoft alumnus, he's made significant contributions to athletic coaching, leading British University sports teams to ten national championships. His multifaceted knowledge spans movement recognition, coaching intelligence, artificial intelligence, and athletic intelligence. Webster and host Pete Moore explore his early passion for computers sparked initially by his Dad (an electrical engineer) to eventually founding Asensi, a company specializing in movement recognition technology for fitness and healthcare. We uncover Steve's insights on enhancing consumer engagement, solving real-world problems through AI, and the future of interactive training technology. This is a deep-dive into the convergence of fitness, technology, and business innovation. Key themes discussed Asensi: Movement recognition company for various applications. AI coaching potential to scale being digitally demonstrated. Athletes training with consumers in real time. Solve frustration to validate business funding needs. Building on existing AI is an industry standard practice. Customer experience tests show high net promoter scores. Trade shows are arsenals for success strategies. A few key takeaways:  1. Holistic View of Digital Transformation: Webster emphasizes the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to digital transformation in the HALO space. Drawing parallels with successful digital shifts in ecommerce and financial services, he underscores the necessity for both legacy and pioneer brands to integrate advanced technologies to stay competitive. 2. Martial Arts Influence: Webster shares how his background in martial arts strongly influences his approach to coaching and technology. Martial arts not only offer physical benefits but also emotional and behavioral improvements. This translates into his work with Asensi, where movement recognition technology enhances fitness and health applications. 3. Asensi's Technology Implementation: The episode focuses a lot on Asensi's movement recognition technology and its practical applications in fitness and health. Initially applied to indoor rowing, the tech has expanded to meet the demands of home workouts. Examples include using cameras for analyzing exercises to prevent injuries and using AI to interpret and improve physical activities. 4. AI and Coaching Synergy: Webster clarifies that Asensi's technology is designed to complement, not replace, human coaches. The AI serves as a "copilot," capturing user movements and providing real-time feedback based on expert coaching insights. This ensures the technology enhances the coaching experience rather than detracting from the human element. 5. Legacy Brands and Market Evolution: The discussion around how legacy fitness brands are leveraging digital technologies to enhance customer experiences is especially noteable. Egyptian Banks| You are Hedged by Nominal Growth The current macroeconomic environment is creating a perfect opportunity for banks' profitability. Balance sheets will expand with the weakness in local currency and high inflation. Treasury investments will present a good opportunity to park excess liquidity, and the high-interest rate environment will serve NIMs and push them higher.Banks have a high percentage of CASA deposits that will counterbalance the recently offered high-rate CDs and alleviate some pressure off of NIM. In addition, treasury rates are on the rise to cover for the higher cost of funds. We believe that Egyptian banks are offering a good upside opportunity, especially after most stocks rallied over the last three months.Egyptian banks are delivering ROEs north of 20%, and most of them are trading below book values. Most banks that got acquired in Egypt recently witnessed transaction multiples that are double those seen amongst listed banks. It is notable that management who will be able to strike the perfect balance between margin gains and tax expense spikes will be able to achieve the highest gains from the current macro environment.Banks have been building excess provisions over the last 7 years, which limits downside risk from any asset quality issues.Based on current profitability trends, we believe those banks present the highest opportunity: ADIB, QNBA, CIEB, CANA, and SAUD, along with COMI of course which continues to be cheap on a P/E basis and much lower than its historical average. Please check the table published today for detailed fair values and trading multiples. The IMF trimmed its 2023 global economic growth forecast by just 0.1 ppt to 2.8% and cautioned that sticky inflation and rapid policy tightening are presenting serious risks to the global economy. The IMF now expects Egypt's economic growth to slow to 3.7% this year, a 0.3 percentage point trim. Suez Canal revenues rose 35% y-o-y in 1Q 2023 to USD 2.3 bn.The Madbouly government is working to incentivize Greek investments in Egypt through joint energy projects, as well as cooperation on renewables and green hydrogen. The Japanese company Sumitomo, one of the world's largest manufacturers of automotive electrical harnesses, is investing USD100 million in Egypt.Jiangsu Guotai International Group aims to pump investments of USD50 million in Egypt in the field of ready-made garments, with aim to export 100% of its production to the European Union and the United States. The Ministry of Transport signed a cooperation protocol with the Spanish company Talgo, to establish a factory in Egypt, to manufacture railway passenger cars in Beni Suef Governorate. The Ministry of Finance rejected demands to reduce the real estate tax for hospitals, similar to the decision approved for industrial establishments.EGAL reduced selling prices in the local market by a range of EGP2k-14k per ton (excluding tax) during April. HRHO has completed its exit from Oman, with aim to improve its return on equity. HRHO has issued an EGP 250 mn senior unsecured short-term note for its brokerage arm to diversify funding sources.A consortium led by GB Auto acquired the initial FRA approval to launch "E'teman" for small and medium enterprises financing with an initial paid-in capital of EGP30 mn.AfricInvest is looking to acquire a 25% stake in the British University in Egypt with a total deal amount exceeding EGP1 bn. Once the envy of the world, British universities are being hollowed out by a managerial class, argues Adrian Pabst, a New Statesman contributing writer and professor of politics at the University of Kent. Instead of intellectual excellence and civic responsibility, the emphasis is increasingly on “churning out graduates who will serve the interests of City firms and the non-governmental organisation industry”.Where did the rot set in, and can it be cured? Pabst traces the university's decline from the advent of the student loan and a 1990s proliferation of “Mickey Mouse” degrees, via New Labour and the Cameron-Clegg coalition's embrace of marketisation and bureaucracy. As degrees have become more expensive, the work that goes into them has become more mediocre – with tutors and students assessed against arbitrary metrics. The universities' "corporate capture... is a profound cultural loss," he writes. In this excoriating essay, originally published as the New Statesman's 10 March 2023 cover story, Pabst diagnoses the causes, examines the costs – and proposes solutions to the current crisis. Three years ago the New Statesman published a cover story showing how successive British governments have emaciated standards in UK university degrees, creating a generation of graduates with devalued qualifications, while costing the taxpayer billions. Since then, the “great university con” has continued unabated. Grade inflation has only increased, despite various declarations from ministers that something should be done to counter it. In this deeply researched and wide-ranging article, the New Statesman's senior politics correspondent, Harry Lambert, wrote that the number of Firsts awarded at British universities has quadrupled since 1994. Now, three years on, that number has quintupled. In this Audio Long Reads episode, Lambert argues that the forces driving this disintegration of academic standards remain in place. That is no surprise. The current system is useful for too many of those involved for the sector to agitate for change. But Britain is being sold short by this “university miracle” – of ever more students going into higher education, and more and more of them emerging with higher grades. How did we reach this point? Why has the value of a British university degree become so diminished? This piece offers answers to the questions that successive waves of students and their parents have been asking for years. This article was first published on newstatesman.com on 21 August 2019. You can read the text version here. Written and read by Harry Lambert. Dr. Caitlin Harvey maps out land transfers from Indigenous communities to European education institutions, through an 1873 Map of New Zealand's 'Colonial' University. Depicting the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, a vast map outlines the lands around the Kimihia and Hakanoa Lakes and Waikato River. It's largest feature, thousands of acres in size, is labelled 'Endowment for Colonial University' - referring to the British University of New Zealand, hundreds of miles away in Christchurch. Exporting the Oxford model, 19th century settler-governments across the world supplied higher education institutions with enormous tracts of Indigenous lands, sometimes violently seized, their lease and sale generating great income. Possibly the longest-lasting myth of the land-grant university is that its operations exist in one, fixed place. Indeed, students often nostalgically associate their university with its distinct city or campus. But this map exposes their mobile and broad territorial reach, how university-building was used as a tool of imperial expansion, and who was excluded from the production of new knowledge and wealth in these new 'progressive' institutions. David Yip was the first Chinese lead actor in a British television drama series, fondly remembered by many for creating the role of Detective Sergeant John Ho, in ‘The Chinese Detective' for BBC TV (1981 – 82.) Liverpool born and bred, David is the son of a Chinese seaman and Liverpudlian mother and as always in The Lonely Arts Club, Martin McQuillan takes our guest right back to the beginning where it all started. David shares tales of his childhood and how he used his experiences to shape his career as an actor. Setting off for theatre school in London, David says that he didn't realise at the time, he was actually leaving home. Now, as he looks back on his career of nearly 50 years, we hear tales of David's work in the theatre and how that morphed into TV and film. David found stardom in the 1980s playing the leading role in the BBC series, The Chinese Detective; was it all down to luck that this was David's big break? No one will ever know but what's clear from speaking to David is how much passion he has for the career he's worked so hard to make for himself and the joy he has in sharing his wisdom with others. David's career has not only kept him local, starring in UK soap opera, Brookside, but has also allowed him to work on Hollywood hits such as James Bond and Indiana Jones.  The Lonely Arts Club podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and many other podcasting platforms.

An unusual solo show this week. We have an introduction from me and then it's a recording of a classic Michael Parenti lecture, Conspiracy and Class Power, which you can also find in the show notes. Speaking of show notes, they're rather extensive everywhere but YouTube, and best found at the actual post page. Show Notes Firstly, the rest of the 'series' in which this show would reside, were it a post. How you play is what you win. Hypostasis of the farmers. The nightingale of eternal meaning. Alien invasion as self care. Medicine songs. Talking The Invisibles. Secondly, the Parenti lecture, its inspiring TMBS clip, and a bit from Ben Burgis on populism and liberal scolds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsua0m6GreY&feature=emb_title   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8OeVaydBJQ   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EEP7hsrC58   Next is a quotation from the blog draft that won't see the light of day, followed by links to what I consider three very useful posts from the rebooted archonology series a few years back: Jupiter is still in Capricorn. One way of being with this is to see him as a teacher of hard truths. The other side of that is that you are or should be learning just what it takes to run the world. To administer the physical plane. To see how the sausages are made and what they are made of. The great teacher has shined a light and I worry that some of you shut your eyes. Open them, please. This is very serious now. If you would like to understand who is 'behind' this in large part. Call them the Anglo-Americans, the Atlanticists, the dollar syndicate, Mr Global. Who cares? It is the interlocked shelob's web of supranational organisations and think tanks that evolved out of the Round Table model. Call them the Davos class. Then you need to understand both how and why they run the world the way they do. And that's here with Miles Copeland. And finally -doing triple duty as a Rune Soup recommendation by also being a limited hangout, and written by a shaman- you need to see how the syndicate uses economics to have entire countries do what they say. (This is the system Russia and China are doing their best to extricate themselves from for obvious reasons.) Next is Charles Eisenstein, and an excerpt from his conspiracy essay. “Conspiracy theory” has become a term of political invective, used to disparage any view that diverges from mainstream beliefs. Basically, any critique of dominant institutions can be smeared as conspiracy theory. There is actually a perverse truth in this smear. For example, if you believe that glyphosate is actually dangerous to human and ecological health, then you also must, if you are logical, believe that Bayer/Monsanto is suppressing or ignoring that information, and you must also believe that the government, media, and scientific establishment are to some extent complicit in that suppression. Otherwise, why are we not seeing NYT headlines like, “Monsanto whistleblower reveals dangers of glyphosate”? Information suppression can happen without deliberate orchestration. Throughout history, hysterias, intellectual fads, and mass delusions have come and gone spontaneously. This is more mysterious than the easy conspiracy explanation admits. An unconscious coordination of action can look very much like a conspiracy, and the boundary between the two is blurry. Consider the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) fraud that served as a pretext for the invasion of Iraq. Maybe there were people in the Bush administration who knowingly used the phony “yellowcake” document to call for war; maybe they just wanted very much to believe the documents were genuine, or maybe they thought, “Well, this is questionable but Saddam must have WMD, and even if he doesn’t, he wants them, so the document is basically true…” People easily believe what serves their interests or fits their existing worldview. In a similar vein, the media needed little encouragement to start beating the war drums. They knew what to do already, without having to receive instructions. I don’t think very many journalists actually believed the WMD lie. They pretended to believe, because subconsciously, they knew that was the establishment narrative. That was what would get them recognized as serious journalists. That’s what would give them access to power. That is what would allow them to keep their jobs and advance their careers. But most of all, they pretended to believe because everyone else was pretending to believe. It is hard to go against the zeitgeist. The British scientist Rupert Sheldrake told me about a talk he gave to a group of scientists who were working on animal behaviour at a prestigious British University. He was talking about his research on dogs that know when their owners are coming home, and other telepathic phenomena in domestic animals. The talk was received with a kind of polite silence. But in the following tea break all six of the senior scientists who were present at the seminar came to him one by one, and when they were sure that no one else was listening told him they had had experiences of this kind with their own animals, or that they were convinced that telepathy is a real phenomenon, but that they could not talk to their colleagues about this because they were all so straight. When Sheldrake realised that all six had told him much the same thing, he said to them, “Why don’t you guys come out? You’d all have so much more fun!” He says that when he gives a talk at a scientific institution there are nearly always scientists who approach him afterwards telling him they’ve had personal experiences that convince them of the reality of psychic or spiritual phenomena but that they can’t discuss them with their colleagues for fear of being thought weird. This is not a deliberate conspiracy to suppress psychic phenomena. Those six scientists didn’t convene beforehand and decide to suppress information they knew was real. They keep their opinions to themselves because of the norms of their subculture, the basic paradigms that delimit science, and the very real threat of damage to their careers. The persecution and calumny directed at Sheldrake himself demonstrates what happens to a scientist who is outspoken in his dissent from official scientific reality. So, we might still say that a conspiracy is afoot, but its perpetrator is a culture, a system, and a story. The Conspiracy Myth - Charles Eisenstein Lastly but the opposite of leastly, is Whitney Webb talking about the next three or four months. Well good day. This is my new podcast. I found a book in the lovely Curlew's bookshop in Barnard Castle, County Durham last week. It contained questions that they may ask you should you wish to go to Oxford or Cambridge. It seems like it might be a sensible book. It isn't. The questions are mostly ridiculous in a 'Try and stress out a 17 year old just doing their best to get into Uni' way. So, I thought I'd use my great acting to inhabit the character of Dr Mr Lee Kyle, Emeritus Professor of Hard Maths at Oxbridge University (He's married to Marjorie, the marraige is on the rocks, he drinks too much cognac), to interview a guest to see if they will be granted access to those hallowed halls.
