The Halloween Jack-o'-lantern, made from pumpkins in the US and originally turnips in the UK, began its existence as a wisp of glowing marsh gas or "spooklight." We begin our episode with a montage of modern American spooklights including that of Oklahoma's "Spooklight Road," North Carolina's Brown Mountain, and the flying saucers sighted in Michigan in 1966, famously identified by investigator Allen Hynek  as "swamp gas." "Jack-o'-lantern"  was just another name given to what's more widely known now as a Will-o'-the-wisp -- a wavering, bobbing light seen in marshy places, understood as mischievous spirit intent on leading travelers off course and into their doom in muck and mire.  Flaming methane produced by rotting vegetation in such environments, is said to the the cause of the phenomenon, though the mode of ignition is still largely a matter of debate. The Latin name for such lights, ignis fatuus  (ool's fire), was also applied to phenomena having nothing to do with swamps, as it's been used interchangeably with "St. Elmo's Fire" to describe electrical discharges seen on ships; masts and other rodlike protrusions when atmospheric conditions are right. We hear a dramatic first-person account from 1847, in which St. Elmo's Fire (identified by antiquarian Henry Duncan as ignis fatuus) appears on a coachman's whip during a storm. A mirage in a marsh. We then hear what scientists of the 16th and 17th century made of ignis fatuus, often relating it  unexpectedly to meteors or luminous insects, while mocking "the superstitions" who imagined it as wandering spirits alight with the flames of Purgatory. Along with marsh spirits exlusively dedicated to misleading travelers, ignis fatuus could also be a temporary  form  taken by shapeshifting fairy folk like Puck or Robin Goodfellow.  We hear an example of this from  the 1628 pamphlet, Robin Goodfellow, his Mad Pranks and Merry Jests. We also see the term appearing in literature of the 16th and 17th century as a metaphor for treachery or deception, in works by John Milton and William Shakespeare. We run through the variety of colorful regional names by which Will-o-the-Wisps were known: Bob-a-longs, Pinkets, Spunkies, Merry Dancers, Nimble men, Hinkypunks, and Flibberdigibbets, as well as some female variants including Peg-a-lantern and Kitty with the Candlestick. In Wales, these mysterious lights could be omens of death, also known as "corpse candles," or "death lights." Appearing around the home of the dying or at the deathbed, they were also called "fetch lights," as they would arrive when required to fetch the soul to the other side. In Cornwall, fool's fire is associated with the piskies, in particular Joan the Wad and her partner Jack-o'-the-Lantern, the former having acquired a mostly positive reputation in the 20th century as a luck-bringer. Mrs. Karswell also reads  some tales of ignis fatuus in the western counties, where the lights are called "hobby lanterns" (from hobgoblin) or  "lantern men." We then shift gears to discuss the pumpkin form of Jack-o'-lantern, beginning with a well-circulated Irish origin story. A quick summary: the light carried in a hollowed vegetable (a pumpkin in the New World or turnip in the Old) represents the spirit of a notorious sinner, "Jack," or "Stingy Jack," who upon death finds he is too wicked for Heaven and too troublesome for Hell. Consquently, he is condemned to wander the earth till Judgement Day, given the peculiar lantern to light his way. This, at least, is the most recent version of the tale, but when it first appeared in print, in a 1936 edition of the Dublin Penny Journal, there's no mention of any hollowed vegetable, much less of Halloween -- meaning this "ancient legend" actually evolved as Halloween folklore in the second half of the 20th century. We then do a bit more myth-busting on the other side of the Atlantic...

Battleship North Carolina 1 Battleship Rd NE, Wilmington, NC 28401 This famed World War II battleship is known for ghostly sightings, particularly that of a young sailor who died in an accident. Guests have heard phantom footsteps echoing through the corridors and chilling sounds of distant gunfire, as if the ship is still engaged in battle. Brown Mountain Lights Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Gorge, NC The Brown Mountain Lights have been a mystery for centuries, with glowing orbs floating over Brown Mountain. Legends suggest they are the spirits of fallen soldiers or lost Native American warriors, forever wandering the mountain in search of home. Omni Grove Park Inn 290 Macon Ave, Asheville, NC 28804 This historic hotel is home to the Pink Lady, the spirit of a woman who fell from the fifth floor in the 1920s. Known for her friendly demeanor, she's often seen on the fifth floor or playing harmless pranks on hotel guests. Devil's Tramping Ground 4900 Devil's Tramping Ground Rd, Bear Creek, NC 27207 A barren circle in the woods where nothing will grow, the Devil's Tramping Ground is said to be the place where the Devil himself paces at night. Visitors report objects mysteriously moving from the circle, and an overwhelming sense of dread lingers around this strange spot. Great Dismal Swamp North Carolina-Virginia Border The fog-shrouded Great Dismal Swamp is rumored to be haunted by the souls of those who sought refuge here centuries ago. Visitors often report eerie lights and ghostly figures floating through the dense wilderness, forever lost in the swamp's depths. Maco Light Maco, NC The ghostly light of conductor Joe Baldwin's lantern is said to float along the old train tracks in Maco, where he met his untimely death. Though the tracks are long gone, the light is still seen by those who dare to visit, swinging as if held by an invisible hand. Lydia's Bridge Jamestown, NC Legend has it that Lydia, a young woman killed in a car accident in the 1920s, still hitchhikes near this bridge on rainy nights. Drivers who pick her up say she disappears just as they approach her home, leaving only a chill in the air. Bentonville Battlefield 5466 Harper House Rd, Four Oaks, NC 27524 Site of a bloody Civil War battle, Bentonville Battlefield is said to be haunted by the spirits of fallen soldiers. Apparitions in ragged uniforms and the sounds of musket fire have been reported by visitors walking these hallowed grounds. Bellamy Mansion 503 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28401 Built in 1859, the Bellamy Mansion is home to the spirit of Mary Bellamy, who is often seen on the grand staircase. Not far from Morganton, North Carolina, there is an overlook you can pull over for with a sign titled “Brown Mountain”. It's a great view no matter what time of day you stop by, but you'll notice a lot of people pulled over at this spot during the nighttime. These people are trying to get a glimpse of the legendary lights of Brown Mountain. In today's post, I will be giving you an eyewitness account along with some evidence they sent over. I first went as a teenager with my father and friend on a camping trip. My father knew about the lights and told me and my friend. So of course we wanted to see for ourselves. On that first trip, I didn't have a camera, but all three of us saw many strange lights down in Linville Gorge. We even saw a bright orange light hovering off the left side of Table Rock Mountain.After this initial trip and experience, me and my friend went back several times specifically to try and see the lights. During these next few trips, I came prepared with a Canon DSLR camera, a 75mm to 300mm telephoto lens, and a tripod. We would hike around the area in the evening to kill time till it got dark out, then head to the Wiseman's View Overlook to try and catch a glimpse of the lights.At about 9:00 p.m. (or when it was dark out) I would set my camera up on the tripod and wait for a light to appear somewhere in the gorge. Whenever we would spot one, I would try and frame it in my viewfinder, zoom in as far as I could, and focus on the light. Then I would typically take a 20-30 second exposure. The exposure had to be this long to get any amount of light due to how dark it was outside.I would repeat taking pictures until the light disappeared or a more interesting one popped up somewhere else. There were a couple of occasions where later in the night, I took a picture and waited 30 seconds for it to complete. Me and my friend would look at the picture on the camera and get so spooked that we freaked ourselves out and left for the night. We would be very excited to get home and look at the pictures in detail on the computer though.There is one story that stands out above all when it comes to experiences at the gorge though. It's one of those stories that sounds too crazy to be true but me and 3 friends all witnessed the same thing so I know it happened.On one trip to Wiseman's view, me and 3 friends went to see the lights as we've done multiple times. Unfortunately, the night was very inactive, and we just weren't seeing any lights at all. What a bummer. After a couple of hours of looking and waiting, we decided to pack our stuff up and go home. As soon as I turned my camera off and went to take it off the tripod, what can only be described as a spotlight shot up into the sky out of the middle of the gorge. Way too powerful to be any flashlight. The light moved around quickly and then turned and shined directly on the four of us standing at the overlook. Just as quick as it was there, it was gone. We all froze in shock for a couple of seconds, then grabbed our stuff and got back to the car as quickly as possible. It's an event I will never forget and will swear by its truth till the day I die.Wow, that was a great story, and the photos are incredible! Thank you Ark Adventures for the story and photos! They bonded over these shared gigs, their common love of dogs, and an enthusiasm for hiking. They decided to tie the knot in the fall of 2015. The Brown Mountain Lightning Bugs officially formed in early 2016, and they've been bringing songs of joy, pain, and dogs to audiences ever since. Combining their unique backgrounds that range from classic rock to classical guitar, they create a blend of original music with deep roots in the past and a contemporary twist here and there. The Bugs have played extensively throughout the Southeast, including performances in The Crown at the Carolina Theatre, The Grey Eagle's Patio Show Series, Ol' Front Porch Music Festival, and at Awendaw Green. They completed their first cross-country tour in early 2020, before going on a virus-mandated hiatus for a couple months. Their sophomore album Folk(ish) came out on April 9, 2021.   Originally from Philadelphia, Cosette Gobat has devoted her entire life to music. A songwriting talent from a very young age, her career took off upon the signing of a record deal with Decapolis Records at age 14. She began touring the East Coast in high school, a move that projected her reach even further. Writing music for documentaries and playing festivals with big artists such as Sheryl Crow, Cosette was signed to another label, KBM Productions, with the release of an electronic EP called ‘Blindside'. After performing on ABC in 2015, she took her career into a different direction studying at Temple University and working as a mastering engineer under Michael Jackson's ex-producer at Arctic Records in Philadelphia. The release of her debut album ‘Couteau' in 2020 offered an introduction of her wide- range artistic ability and knowledge, a well-produced blend of folk, classical, and dream pop. Cosette's music is described as an honest soundscape with poetic lyrics and drowned reverb, evoking a scenery into nostalgia and a sonic dimension.

Greenfield also known by his ecclesiastical name Tau Sir Hasirim, is an American occultist, ceremonial magician, UFOlogist, writer, editor, and Gnostic Bishop of Ecclesia Gnostica Universalis who resides in Atlanta, Georgia. His book The Story of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Light is one of the few sources of information on this subject. His book The Compleat Rite of Memphis is a comprehensive history of an Egyptian Rite of Freemasonry, and he edited an authorized, annotated edition of the work Liber Thirty-One by Charles Stansfeld Jones. He was elected and consecrated a Bishop by the Holy Synod of the Neopythagorean Gnostic Church in 1986. In 1987 he was extended recognition as a Bishop within the Gnostic Catholic Church - Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) and was consecrated in New York in November 1988. His episcopal title "Tau" is sometimes abbreviated as "T" and prefixed to his legal name, and thus he may also be referred to as T Allen Greenfield. A former editor of the OTO journal LAShTAL, Greenfield has more recently become a critic of the Order's upper management. In February 2006, he called for their resignation and stepped down from all managerial duties in protest, issuing a strong criticism of the current Outer Head of the Order, William Breeze. A past (elected) member of the Society for Psychical Research and the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (from 1960), he has twice been the recipient of the "UFOlogist of the Year Award" of the National UFO Conference (1972 and 1992). His road to the Olympic Games was twisty and narrow, and often fraught with obstacles—not unlike a section of Rocky Mountain singletrack.
