A New Sustainable CultureThrough the rise in pop culture, climate change awareness has increasingly been integrated into the entertainment industry. Particularly in the Black community, multimedia cultural campaigns are used to increase interest in environmental movements with the use of light-hearted, fun content. Artists, musicians, and influencers are leveraging their platforms to highlight the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable practices, which, in turn, provides easily accessible resources and information to marginalized communities that empower them to participate in the fight against climate change. Black Communities and Environmental JusticePopulations of color face disproportionate energy burdens caused by climate change. A study conducted by Rice University found that Black communities were more prone to live in vulnerable areas, a generational problem caused by the history of Black gentrification. Even now in 2024, Black communities in Georgia are forced to pay higher electricity bills, despite having lower rates compared to other states, due to old and inefficient household systems. According to the National Black Environmental Justice Networks, African Americans were also found to breathe in 56% more pollution than they cause, whereas their White counterparts breathe in 17% less pollution than generated. African Americans are also 75% more likely than White Americans to live in polluted communities, leading to 13.4% of African American children suffering from asthma, compared to 7.3% of White children. Starting in the 1970s, some black musicians included environmental themes in their productions. Artist Marvin Gaye released “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” to tackle discussions about oil spills and mercury waste; funk group Earth, Wind, & Fire released “Burnin' Bush” to bring awareness about the global destruction of Mother Earth. Those themes continue today in music produced by Black artists, such as in the popular single “Feels Like Summer” by Childish Gambino, which conveys worries about uncertain impacts caused by global warming. Additionally, artists such as SZA have partnered with brands to promote sustainable merchandise, encouraging a societal paradigm to rely on eco-friendly products. Representation and EducationWith more than 50% of the world's population active on social media, people are continuously exposed to the influx of information circulated by entertainment. Through the entertainment industry, climate news has become increasingly accessible and engaging, allowing communities to educate themselves on sustainability and mobilize action. Although hip-hop and rap were once considered controversial music genres due to themes of violence, drugs, and misogyny, there is a growing effort to utilize the storytelling aptitude of these genres for social and environmental commentary. Artists use rhymes and flow in hip-hop and rap to effectively share the living conditions, natural disasters, and climate injustice that people face. This empowerment of entertainment has motivated marginalized people to strengthen their community bonds and collaborate in fighting against climate change. The widespread influence of entertainment is fostering inspiration for a new culture promoting climate equity and agency, as well as the normalization of environmentalism in society. Who are the co-founders of Klean Energy Kulture?Corey Dennard and Michael Hawthorne Jr. (Akachè Marcino) are the co-founders of Klean Energy Kulture, a non-profit environmental entertainment company. Corey Dennard, popularly known as Mr. Hanky, is a hit producer who has worked with top charting artists, including Snoop Dog, Usher, and Soulja Boy. Michael Hawthorne Jr., also known as Akachè Marcino, is an environmentalist and political organizer. Hawthorne has worked on Barack Obama's first presidential campaign and Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign. Together, they lead Black communities towards climate resiliency through campaigning for clean energy.Further ReadingCanary Media: This Atlanta duo has a theory to drive climate action: Make it coolMedium: How Michael Hawthorne Jr Of Klean Energy Kulture Is Helping to Promote Sustainability and Climate JusticeAmerican Lung Association: Disparities in the Impact of Air PollutionAtmos: Composing Climate Change: The Radical Legacy of Black MusiciansClimate Reality Project: Environmental RacismFor a transcript of this episode, please visit https://climatebreak.org/promoting-clean-energy-through-pop-culture-with-klean-energy-kulture-co-founders-michael-hawthorne-jr-and-corey-dennard/.

What if grace is more than pardon—and actually the power that fuels multiplication? In this episode, Justus, a young professional leader in Oklahoma City, unpacks 2 Timothy 2:1–7 and shows how grace strengthens believers like fuel in an engine. Through vivid stories, soldier-athlete-farmer analogies, and real-life failures (like running out of gas on I-40), he reveals how God multiplies small acts of obedience into something far greater. You'll walk away encouraged to push the pedal of faith and watch God fill the gap with His strength.Show NotesIn this episode we cover:Grace as more than forgiveness—grace as strength. How the soldier, athlete, and farmer shape our understanding of endurance. Why multiplication requires grace, not just effort.Dallas Willard's insight: Grace is opposed to earning, not effort.Personal stories that make the theology tangible (like running out of gas).A new original song inspired by this lesson: Burnin' Grace in Worn Out Boots.

It's spoiler season in MLB, and the A's are leading the charge after knocking Boston down a peg at Fenway. In this episode, Matt dives deep into the late-season playoff picture and all the chaos across baseball, college football, and the NFL. Baseball: A's and Angels playing spoiler — Oakland sweeps the Reds, takes a series off Boston, while the Angels quietly keep ruining contenders' weekends. Royals' offense goes ice cold — why Salvador Perez's big year is being wasted. AL playoff picture: Yankees, Blue Jays, Astros, and Mariners fighting for spots, while Cleveland lurks right behind. Blue Jays' consistency and underrated stars like Alejandro Kirk and Bo Bichette. Cal Raleigh's historic switch-hitting season, Judge's MVP-level tear, and Schwarber's quiet 50+ homer year. NL playoff race: Brewers in control, Phillies cruising, Padres chasing the Dodgers, Cubs falling apart, Mets completely imploding, and why the Reds and Diamondbacks are still alive. Dodgers facing a gauntlet, Padres have an opening, and Arizona's constant shuttle with the Reno Aces. Key series: Astros vs. Mariners, Reds vs. Cubs, Dodgers vs. Giants — all playoff-shaping. College Football: Top 25 breakdown: Ohio State and Penn State looking dominant, LSU maybe overrated, Miami making a statement against USF, Georgia proving itself in a comeback win over Tennessee. Florida State is back — Alabama comparison, Miami vs. FSU could decide the ACC. Illinois and Indiana battling to prove they belong in the playoff conversation. Oregon's potential to finally get over the hump, USC shaky, and why Clemson is falling fast. Vanderbilt's surprise rise behind Diego Pavia, Georgia Tech emerging as a dark horse, and why Mississippi State might be better than expected. Big games this week: Texas Tech–Utah, Auburn–Oklahoma, Ole Miss–Tulane. NFL: Broncos frustrations — Sean Payton refusing to run the ball, Bo Nix needs balance to succeed. Chiefs at 0–2 and why Matt hopes they keep losing. Chargers looking sharp but always a threat to “Charger” their season away. Raiders, Lions, and why the AFC West is still the best division in football. Injury talk: Achilles and ACL tears piling up, how turf and modern training styles are fueling the problem. Another week where baseball gets chaotic, college football heats up, and the NFL gives us plenty to yell about. Without Your Head Podcast: Nasty Neal with Burnin' Percebes (Juan González and Fernando Martínez) creators of The Fantastic Golem Affairs in theaters now!The story begins with Juan and David playing a movie guessing game on a rooftop. During an animated round, David strips naked, mimics a monkey and accidentally falls to his death. However, instead of a conventional fatal impact, his body inexplicably shatters into ceramic-like fragments. Juan, devastated and confused, attends David's funeral, where his remains are treated with eerie indifference. As Juan attempts to process his grief, he is bombarded with bureaucratic nuisances, including funeral expenses and insurance claims for the damaged car David landed on. Determined to uncover the truth behind his friend's bizarre demise, Juan embarks on an investigation.

In this episode, Rob and Mark crack open a bottle of Fireball Blazin' Apple, a cinnamon-apple flavor bomb not even released to the public yet, and explore its sugary punch, the genius of its marketing, and why this might be the tailgate hit of the season. But first, they take a deep dive into the real story of Johnny Appleseed, frontier philosopher, land hustler, and the unexpected grandfather of American booze culture. Meridian is drowning in chicken sandwiches — spicy, crispy, wrapped — this suburb is packed with poultry. So our host Lindsay Van Allen did what any irrationally curious person would do, and she tried them all. Today on the show, we're revisiting her ultimate guide to Meridian's chicken scene, originally recorded last spring. Since this episode was initially published, The Chicken Shanty in Meridian has closed. Lindsay's since given the crown to Burnin' Mouth for their Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Let us know who has your favorite chicken sandwich by sending us a voicemail or text: 208-546-9485. Want some more Boise news?
